Then criticize the coach all you want. Not the kid. It seems there is a lot of animosity towards the Hefner kid because of the kind of scholarship offers he received. (A lot of comments like yours referring to "power 5") Many people in college basketball must think he's pretty darn good judging from the offers he received. I'll go with the opinions of the guys working for college basketball programs over guys on the forum.4 points

Off topic, but there is a difference between best player and most athletic player. I thought that's what initially came up on this topic. With all due respect to this thread (Nederland and PA), I won't bring up any other players.. But I'll say that the Nederland kid is neither the best player or the most athletic player I SETX, but he's in the top 5 of both, IMO. With respect to Heffner, I know he's a smart kid to have gotten the offer from A&M and I hear he's kicking arse academically. With that said, I know for a fact he'll thrive out there next year.3 points -

Great answers and explanations. Like I tell all my friends, if you haven’t been in a high school from 4-6A in the past twenty years, and by in a high school , I mean sit in the library or a classroom all day (not feasible for most but more accurate than the five word explanation of school your teenager gives you while focusing on their phone) you’ll be shocked. Again, the school is a reflection of society, so hangout all day at Walmart and watch people and their actions for more shock value. The most disappointing thing is the lack of accountability by students, teachers, administrators, and schools. About ten years or more, schools (where I worked at least) stopped sending kids who would verbally assault teachers to the local judge who would fine the parents ( finally make them be parents by $). The county just said, no, we’re too busy. The really bad ones can really get away with being IDIOTS, yet they’re often untouchable because of their 501 plan. Kids know exactly what they can get away with ( just like us in the 70’s). There are still great kids, parents, teachers, administrators, and schools, but not as many. But I am excited to get back in it, definitely takes a special (demented maybe😏) to do it.3 points -

PA played a great game and won. Coach came in with a great game plan to get the job done. I never made a prediction for anyone to win this game. All I ever said was how ridiculous it is that Hefner gets so much criticism from "adults" on this forum. With a few of the comments in this thread, I'd say I've been proven correct.3 points -

Hit the nail on the head. Lots of teachers in my family. Also, I might add, the common belief that teachers or coaches are off-work when the kids aren't in school is way off base. The state keeps adding more and more and more paperwork, trainings, etc. There are enough mandatory trainings now that the state apparently expects teachers to also be doctors, lawyers, psychiatrists, etc. One thing that is difficult to gauge is how long a teacher should work to earn that salary. A lot of administrators don't hold the teachers very accountable, so it would be easy to treat it like a 9 to 5 (or 8 to 4) job. But a good teacher - let alone a good coach - puts in a lot more than that. You would NOT want to pay them hourly. The insurance is bad but, combined with salaries rarely making a real jump (this year was an exception) teachers in this area in particular have no real raise in take-home pay more often than not. Why does discipline stink? Mommies that don't believe Johnny's crap stinks. Administrators that don't want to deal with mommy. AND..... the state has begun to decide what is an acceptable discipline rate. Not sure now, but at one point they were essentially giving quotas that you can only have a certain number of kids disciplined in in-school-suspension or otherwise. So are you gonna send a kid for screaming obscenities in the hall? Or do you save that spot for a kid that vapes in the bathroom? Or threatens a teacher? Plus some kids are deemed not responsible for their actions due to disabilities and such - regardless of what it does to teachers and students. Academically - the state is currently judging progress more by whether the kids are graduating than anything. So a kid that doesn't get a diploma means the school failed. Doesn't matter whether Johnny can spell or if Johnny simply refuses to learn how to spell. Standardized testing should prevent that - except they keep adding loopholes around that also. Additionally, the politics can be insane. There are very few schools that do anything like merit pay to begin with and the internal politics mean that might be irrelevant anyway. Also goes for discipline. Some kids get hammered for certain things. Other kids walk for the same reason. Sometimes simply because the people in charge like that kid. So, to recap, beyond low salary (combined with insane insurance hikes), no discipline, low academic standards, expanded school year and out of school time requirements, politics and more. Gee, why might there be a shortage of teachers? The crazy thing is the state talks about being concerned about teacher shortages, yet they are making the job more difficult and unpleasant. A lot of coaches are flocking to the refineries - not because they don't enjoy coaching and the kids, but because the situation is so much better. Most parents, I believe, are good parents that want the best for their kids and all the kids. I don't think they realize how messed up things are. The bottom of the barrel parents and kids are ruining it for everyone. Things will get better when the good parents realize the corrosion of standards are hurting everyone and they start demanding that their kids be taken more into account than the bad ones.3 points -

Hard fought game for both teams. Lumberton has a tough squad, we got down too much early and when we finally tied it up we made too many mistakes in the end. Good team as we expected, we need to rebound Friday against a tough Bridge City. Second half of this district is going to be tough for everyone, well except for maybe HJ. Sophomore Aniah Henderson 20 points 11 rebounds Senior Marlandria Hebert 10 points 14 rebounds.3 points -

It was a tough grind it out see saw type of game. We led most of the game but we knew sooner or later a run from United was going to come. North Shore is solid but United is/was the better team. The athletic demons appeared to be in effect all across the country last nite. There was a near brawl between both teams last nite , and both coaches got into it and had to apologize in front of the entire gym2 points -

He went pretty far in the playoffs with Vidor a couple of consecutive years and he didn’t have any P5 college prospects. Beat good Ozen and Central teams but I’m not sure why he can’t beat PAM or make a good playoff run with Hef and this NED squad.2 points -
Chances are he won’t be doubled for the entire game in the SEC. If he’s so bad then why was the game plan to take Hefner away? (Great coaching by the way, and something English should’ve adjusted to, but he didn’t) Also, why don’t we let the kid get to A&M before you claim they made a mistake on him?2 points

Memorial has a solid squad and are really tough in the blocks. Very impressed with Lofton. He had his way. It was a great game for one half until Ned went on a 3rd Q scoring drought. Memorial was very physical with Hefner all night and he got frustrated. Lofton outshined him tonight, but Hefner DID NOT quit on his team like one Memorial fan said. Congrats on the win, Memorial. The finalists (4 for offense, 4 for defense) will be announced this evening at WRS press conference. As for nominees, I have the list of players nominated by their coaches (I am a voter for WRS), but I am not at liberty to post. Reason being, not all coaches nominated players for this award (really don't want to reveal who nominated and who didn't). In fact, this year's list is the smallest we have had in many years.1 point -

I think Hefner is a (B-) athletically; (B+) skills wise, but he is a (C, C-) in the aggression, take charge of a game type of player. I don't know if it's in him, but if it is he better find it before he gets to A&M.1 point

This one was bound to be a difficult one for HJ. Off the back of an emotional loss to Silsbee against a well-coached team that had already seen them play numerous times in the EC tournament. Free throws seem to be an issue of late for HJ that needs to be fixed, but I think they must be happy to get their win and cruise into the off night.1 point -
