Not sure about the HJ part but the whole HF situation was definitely weird. Sure there might have been at least one of those kids that lived in the district the entire time and decided to attend HF after the coaching change. But would he have made that decision if he were the only athlete transferring? IDK. Were all the “move-ins” legitimate? Evidently not according to the UIL decision to make some play JV for a year. Hard to believe that all that swapping to HF (who I think won one game and took 20 plus point losses on the regular the year before) just happened naturally lol

Isn’t it widely known and basically just accepted that HJ gets kids from Beaumont all the time that don’t live in the district and has for years, and that the HF team got an immediate influx of talent as soon as the new head coach showed up there??

Always makes me happy anytime i see a small country school beat a "small school" from a big city with a huge player pool.

After seeing the replay yes it was and should have been called an intentional. I havent said anything about the officiating in the game as i didnt want to be seen as making an excuse etc. but there were definitely some things i would question as far as the officiating especially after hearing a few things.

I'm kind of curious if he'll be suspended for that. It was super dirty, and broke the kid's wrist. HJ had a player get suspended for his actions against a HH player that cost them their first round playoff game, and I had a lengthy conversation with a HH coach in another thread about it. I'm curious to hear if HH did anything about this.

I think its just program and leadership consistency over the years. Then it just becomes an expectation to achieve at that level. The only thing in SE Texas on the boys side that was even remotely close to that was Port Arthur Lincoln. It was always state or bust. That can be a double edge sword however, but it establishes an expectation of excellence for the kids and coaches.

Just making sure I hadn’t missed something! Some schools are historically good at it and others like HF are just now getting into the game

You could almost say that all HF basketball teams sucked until recently when that influx of talent came in but that could be proven by looking at past records. Not that anyone would do that, they are just playing by the new rules and it’s only 10 mins from Bmt. Look at Winnie and HJ, Beaumont has plenty of basketball talent to go around. They can’t all start for BU or WB, when they merged Central and Ozen some of those kids had to go play elsewhere.

The best player on the court will be advantage HJ, just needs to be on the floor for as close to 32 minutes as possible.

HJ’s achilles is foul trouble. If Beavers, Jackson and Sneed start the 4th qtr with 3 or less fouls they win easy! If any two of these start the fourth qtr with 4 fouls it will be tough to win. They need Beavers on the floor controlling boards and scoring on offensive rebounds, Sneed must be able to attack the rim and play at a high speed, Jackson needs to be able to attack the rim, hit some mid ranges while controlling the pace of the game. Also Henry needs to shoot the three ball, if she hits at least three of them HJ should be in the drivers seat.

They are currently ranked #5 in the state rankings for what that's worth.

Buna is just going to be that good this year. First time coach terrier has beat bridge city in 15 or 18 years Or something like that.

Proud to see #12 get first team recognition in football and basketball for his Senior season. Do you guys think they will have any all-district or all-whatever games this year to mix the kids up and watch them play in a showcase game? I’d love to see him play with some studs, he’s really a great role player, defender and facilitator that was trying to carry the load. Hopefully COVID didn’t cancel all that, either way it was a fun season. Even though our team didn’t perform as well as they could have and took too long to get it together, I enjoyed it. So much so that you’ll probably see me lurking around the Vidor games next season and providing some commentary for the SETX people who like to keep up with the Pirates.

Canyon is really good, but they haven't been quite as convincing the last couple of rounds, barely squeaking by some good (but not great) teams. They're a deliberate team like China Spring, but considerably better. The good news is HJ played pretty poorly and were able to get by China Spring. If either one of these teams plays poorly the other should win. They're pretty evenly matched, with two completely different styles. If HJ can play their game and dictate the pace to some degree I expect them to win fairly comfortably (9-12 points). If Canyon controls the pace I can see them winning a close game (2-6 points). I'll predict something in the middle of that. HJ 66, Canyon 59.

I'm not being critical of anyone's opinion, but...Barbara Comeaux has earned the right to stay at PN-GISD as Girls AD/Golf Coach for as long as she decides to get out of bed and put on purple and white. If there was a Mount Rushmore at PN-G, she would be on it. She is worth every penny that PN-GISD pays her and then some. She is one of the strongest pillars there is upholding the core values of PN-GISD: Honor, Pride, and Tradition. Share more info/intel about the new DC. Inquiring minds want to know. Here's to Jayce Nelson either staying with PN-G to learn under a mentor, or if he is moving on, here's to him landing somewhere that is a great fit for him and his family. I've never been a coach, and I can't imagine that my livelihood depended upon 15-18 year old kids. Need good/great coaches, but also need ballplayers.
