I just spoke to John Seybold the Jasper Superintendent. The number of kids being sent home with fever was beginning to rise. Possibly as many as 70 students on Thursday alone and they are getting additional reports this morning. Seybold consulted with County Judge Mark Allen, the Health Department and local physicians before making this decision. It was done to give the district 10 days to be closed for cleaning and disinfecting. But due to the Labor Day holiday the district will only loose 5 instructional days. This is a matter of public health and safety, no more and no less. After the loss of our site administrator to this virus we take it very seriously here at SETXSPORTS.COM and we will respect any schools decision regarding these types of decisions. It is a non-district game and that is all it was between Jasper and Silsbee. Let's all keep things in perspective when we post.

Let's make this perfectly clear. The Jasper ISD administration made this call, not Coach Barbay. The entire school system in Jasper is shut down and all extracurricular activities have been canceled. I'm certainly not much of a Barbay fan, but this is not on him.

Silsbee was in desperation mode when Jasper canceled yesterday morning. They tried to get a game with Kingsville or Breckenridge. Couldn't get it worked out. They also looked to Louisiana but came up empty. Coach Smith just wanted a game. Likely he would have played his JV in 2nd half if Hardin had accepted but that was ok too since the JV game with Jasper was also canceled.

Silsbee contacted Hardin and Hardin said no. Stated they were out of school due to Covid.

You could actually make it a tax deduction if you made capital improvements to your free range, organic poultry "business". Heck just show a loss for a couple years and like magic your tax burden is reduced. That was a good game last night. Ridge Point wins by 6 , but Dickinson made it interesting down by 14 late then scored, converted 2 point conversion and onside kick! Doesn’t really tell us much about Manvel , but I think we will see improvement from both teams tonight! Goodluck

Just FYI. COVID blew up over on Thursday. Lots of staff and kids getting tested and testing positive. This was out of our hands. Jasper County Coronavirus Numbers as of Thu, Sep 2nd, 2021: Active cases – 339 Thu morning/390 Thu afternoon (Was 305 on 09/01/21) Deaths – 109 (Was 106 on 09/01/21) that’s a big jump in numbers in 24hours and a lot of those positive cases are in the schools for a small town like us these numbers required for us to do something Believe me everyone here wanted to play this game!

Silsbee does not schedule down. Newton is the only 3A that Silsbee has regularly scheduled in the last 30 years. Putting Newton on the schedule is not a bad thing.

I don't think there is much evidence to show that you will not contact covid if you are vaccinated, but there seems to be plenty of evidence that shows if you are vaccinated, the symptoms are lessened, making it more likely to keep you out of the hospital.

Coach Hatch indeed. Matt Maida seemed to have 2 or 3 - 3 pick games. At least 1 for sure. Rick Culbert also had a 3 pick game and finished the season with a significant amount. Matt is the one you're referring too. If he didn't lead the state in picks, he was either tied for first, or missed being tied for first by 1. Want to say he finished the year with 9 or 10 picks. Crazy when you consider he's like 5'7. He did get an all state honorable mention. So did Keith Ingle at DE. That defense was stout. I want to say they finished in the 2002 4A defensive state rankings in 4th, allowing just over 160 yards per game. And that was averaged in with having 2 really atrocious games allowing near 300 if i remember correctly. I believe Coach Burks is the current DC, and he was the DL/DE coach during this time. He knows this game very well. If you had to handpick anyone to take Coach Hatch's place, it would be Coach Burks...and conveniently enough, he was already there.

I was 10 days in the hospital & the Covid almost got me. I am now back & God is good all the time. PNG QB must execute the quick out passing that he was overthrowing last week. I think this game will be a great benefit to both teams due to the speed & execution of the two offenses. Just praying for no injuries. I will be released to go to the game on Friday. Safe travel to all! PNG has a special spirit!!! Pass it on!!!
