  1. Newton better count their blessings that they didn’t consult with Reagan in the late 70’s, through the 80’s and 90’s. In 1974 Newton won state, only to have Coach Lyndee Thompson leave to go to another school. So they promote the offensive coordinator for the 1975 season. It took Newton 23 years to win another state championship. So according to Reagan, Curtis Barbay, the 8th all-time winningest coach in the state of Texas woulda been canned in the mid-80’s for not delivering a state title. Other schools like Hampshire-Fannett has done what you advocate. HF had UIL hall-of-fame coach Les Koenning, who is one of the most respected coaches in the state of Texas, all time, as their head coach. In 1974, HF was #1 in the state. They lose to #2 Newton (see above) in the 1st round of the playoffs. In 1975, HF was #1 again, only to lose in the 4th round, to the eventual state runner-ups. So in 2 years Les Koenning went 23-2, and people in the community were up in arms, and he didn’t get renewed. HF has never sniffed that success again. Winning a state title is much harder than you make it out to be. Sometimes perspective is hard to come by and keep. Ask Randy Allen at Highland Park… he didn’t win a title at Brownwood, following Gordon Wood. He also didn’t win one at Abilene Cooper. Turns out he knows how to coach despite not winning a title. Same with Phil Danaher and countless others.

  2. Roschon? What would we have done with Roschon if we had an “actual state championship-type coach” when he was playing? That’s seriously what you’re asking? Roschon’s family moved out of Port Arthur ISD and into PN-GISD when RJ was still playing Pop Warner because Faircloth is one of the best QB coaches in Texas and RJ’s dad knew Faircloth could develop RJ’s talent. I remember that - I went to school with RJ’s older brother after they made the move. If Faircloth hadn’t been at PN-G, Roschon never would have played a down at PN-G. So what would we have done with Roschon if we had a true, blue, smitty-certified, state championship-caliber head coach? The answer is, not damn thing. The fact that RJ played for PN-G at all is yet another reason we were so lucky to have Faircloth. You’ve hated Faircloth since the day the man hired on. You didn’t know the first thing about PN-G then, and you still don’t now. Go back to worrying about Nederland ISD’s bonds.

  4. He can't hang up the Etheridge thing...I think I stated pretty clearly that the circumstances have changed pretty dramatically since then...Etheridge was indeed a great coach, but I'm not certain that he would have experienced state title runs at png in today's environment I also agree that this conversation is fruitless...my last reply to Reagan will be to answer his last question to me, is 12 years enough? IMO, the question should NOT be can a coach make an SC run in any certain time period...what can a coach do with what he is given...for png, I think playoffs should certainly be a expectation each and every year and making at least the 2nd round could be considered a successful season, depending on what kind of team they have...example, given what they did this year and what they have returning from that next year, I should think getting at least to the 3rd round would be the expectation...barring injuries, anything short would be disappointing...I would think that this season would be considered overachieving since they were thought to be a struggle to even make the playoffs and went 3 rounds deep...overall, I would characterize Faircloth's time at png as a success...those who think otherwise may well get to find out soon, it sounds like, if it was or not?

  5. With the exception of Danny Malone, whose two seasons don't present a sufficient sample size, Brandon Faircloth had the best winning percentage of any PN-G coach since Doug Ethridge. He had the most wins to his name of any PN-G coach in PN-G history; he took only thirteen seasons to break a record his predecessor took fifteen seasons to set. He sent more players on to play at the college level, particularly at more major college programs, than any coach in PN-G history by a country mile, and produced arguably the best athlete in school history. His teams shattered multiple school records dating back decades. He brought PN-G its first undefeated regular season in 32 years - only the third such season in school history - and strung together the most consistent streak of deep playoff runs PN-G's had in four decades. Most recently, he took a team that wasn't even predicted to make the playoffs three rounds deep, pulling off two major upsets over state-ranked powers along the way, the latter of the two sporting an 11-0 record at the time. And you think the fact that he didn't get us all the way to state during his thirteen seasons, in an era when no Southeast Texas team in PN-G's classification has managed to beat the suburbs to get to state since 2002, is sufficient justification to dismiss him, on the off chance his successor might hire the next Art Briles as an assistant? Now you're just trolling. This conversation's not worth carrying on.

  6. You are right, everyone’s ultimate goal is a state title. Coaches are competitive, but not naive or dumb. In every classification, on any given year, there’s only about 10 schools with a realistic chance of winning a championship. With about 225 schools in each class (on average), only 10 schools have a realistic goal of winning a title. So every 5 or 6 years, the 200+ schools in every class without a title needs to move on from their coach? The only one not being realistic is you.

  7. I believe a good Coach is important. But we can’t sit back here and try to play match maker with athletes. You know you run into teams with multiple D1 offers. Farther in the playoffs you go more athletes your playing against your 1 or 2 guys might have trouble playing a against a stacked team. There were also two great coaches at home during the state championship games Scott Surratt and Gary Joseph are they at fault for not making it to the championship?

  8. Are you joking PNG needs to be in. 4a D1 ? PNG has 566 kids more then LCM. Png also has 138 more kids then Nederland. PNG doesn’t need to come down. PNG glory days might just be long gone or maybe they will have a good season here or there. But for the most part Setx has average football teams compared to certain parts of the state. Yes you will have a extremely talented group come in here and there but PNG is not Katy high, west lake, Highland Park or Aledo. All those schools are near large cities so recruitment is there.

  9. You act like winning a state championship is as easy as a district championship. Only one wins every year. And according to your logic there would be well over 1,300 coaching openings every few years when a coach wins no state titles. Don’t know if you’ve ever coached, but sometimes bringing a team to the 2nd or 3rd round, and getting a team to play way above their talent level, is a helluva coaching job. If you think PN-G was gonna beat Crosby, Liberty Hill, or SOC then surely you must think they could beat Beaumont United in basketball too!

  10. No kidding. I’m not certain the NFL model of firing coaches will work at the high school level. Wouldn’t want a bunch of Jerry Jones on my local school board firing coaches every 6 years.

  11. If and when Faircloth leaves for Sulpher Springs, those that wanted him gone, and those that believe all coaches should deliver a state title in a given time frame, will find out that changing a coach does not mean it gets any better. IMO, the 3rd or 4th round is the ceiling (or realistic expectation) PNG should expect.

  12. Are you talking about his actual playing days? I’m not sure of that history. But he won one title as PNG’s head coach in 1975 and lost another in 1977. They didn’t play in four championship games under him.

  13. As of this writing -- President Trump is "158-2" when he has endorsed a candidate. Sounds like the hate for Trump is generated by the news media and a few here!

  14. I think you're right. Coach Alvarez came to Jasper as an assistant in either '89 or '90 when I was a student. We had a fun coaching staff in those days and he was a great guy when I knew him. I haven't seen him in almost 30 years, but I would be thrilled if he came back to lead the Bulldogs.

  17. Same reason the FBI is so vague about their involvement. Half the demonstrators were FBI agents (not really half but a bunch). The real demonstrators were used. Whole thing was a setup. Pelosi & the Dems wanted it to happen. They’re so scared of Trump there’s no limit to what they’d do to smear him. But I’m preaching to the choir. 😄 The FBI involvement reminds me of the last significant days of the KKK. It was common knowledge that if all the FBI agents quit the Klan there wouldn’t be enough Klansmen to have a rally. 😂😂😂 Ironically a real investigation into Jan 6th would be of Pelosi & the FBI’s involvement.

  19. That’s main reason for their toughness. The SETX dna (Beaumont and PA as well) includes a lot of toughness. Silsbee community, like WOS, would support coaches instilling such toughness. Not all communities would…like say, Palestine.

  20. Sure Silsbee has talent but the West Orange kids are cut from a different cloth. Ive been watching all these area kids from pee wee through graduation and the West Orange kids are just tougher. Thats the difference, TRUE GRIT . There grade school kids are worked and treated harder than most varsity teams in this area.

  21. Does PN-G have the talent level to win it in 5A D1 or 5A D2? It should always be the ultimate goal, but not a prerequisite for keeping your job. Don’t judge every school the same standard as you would Katy, GPNS, Carthage, Aledo and the likes.

Yes, brutal schedule combined with a team that literally hasn’t been healthy all season…I feel for the kids and coaches. And I really hope so too. There are a few of the local kids that some poaching overtures will be made to. I can tell you one will be back.

  24. Makes sense. BF was the person Riordan called to ask about the Crosby job when he was coming from Sulphur Springs. I’m sure Riordan was the first person BF called and probably got recommended by Riordan seeing as how that job would’ve been his for the taking.

  28. 🤦 lol The country is crumbling because of this fool and the fools that voted him in, you claim the same fools will vote ANYONE else in but Trump, and the only voters you say are irrational are Trump voters. You are ate up with it. If you vote to continue this path you are un-American and not Christian, now that’s more accurate, we are, after all, talking about democrats. I’m not sure why you dislike Trump so much, you share a lot of the same qualities when talking about those you disagree with.

  30. I don't know why you say that. You really think I just made that up? A fairytell? Seriously? No one is pointing at your grandparents. What I am doing is contrasting the privileged poor of today that gang bangs and commits the vast majority of crimes then uses "poverty" as an excuse, to the preceding generations that were FAR poorer than the poor of today, but were solid, law abiding citizens. The world has changed. Fathers are mostly absent and the welfare generation is running wild. Over the past year many cities have became war zones. Its not mostly isolated to Chicago, NY, and LA anymore. Sad days for whats left of America.

  31. This, and prioritizing the nuclear family would completely transform the black community... with little to no help required from the rest of the community. I don't think anybody understands that we ALL want to see their community thrive. Unfortunately the answer isn't bigger handouts and rewards for not supporting yourself and your family. It's so frustrating.

  32. Both sets of my grandparents came from Louisiana to Beaumont a century ago. My Dads dad was gassed by the Germans in WWI. He barely survived, but his lungs were severely burnt up, and could not do much more that get out of a chair to walk across the room. He had 8 kids and never worked again. Moms dad suffered from heart failure and repetitive hernias. He tried to run a filling station, but never made much money at all. Mom was one of 5 kids. Both my parents were "depression era" kids, and survived by planting gardens, making their own cloths, and eschewing real medical care. The babies were born at home, not in hospitals. I grew up in a tiny home without air conditioning. Dad worked hard, but it took time to build things up because him and Mom had to start from literally nothing. My grandparents were beyond poor. They nearly starved during the depression. However, they, and my parents, were devout Christians who never, ever even thought about using poverty as an excuse for committing killings, drug abuse and other crimes like the "poor" do today. I fully reject "poverty" as an excuse for crime. The breakdown of the nuclear family and the associated immorality lifestyles are to blame.
