This is so so wrong of the West Orange community. Did we want Toby? I was the first person on this thread to suggest it. Yes, I think that was the majority’s pick but to show up and act a fool and disrespect Coach Hickman in front of his family is ridiculous. We can and should be better.6 points -

Why would a guy leave where they just gave him everything he wanted (& won) for a place that just pushed out the winningest coach in school history?3 points -
No one has ever done what Surratt has ever done, so I wouldn’t expect Faircloth to. Danaher won more games than anyone ever in Texas ever has, so pretty sure he knows how to coach. Talk about next level…. Outside of winning a state title (which is extremely difficult) Danaher had Calallen at the pinnacle for 40 years. Danaher had Calallen in around 10 semifinals and 2 state title games. Every time losing to a team with much much more talent than he had. And they came close to winning several of them, because of him, not in spite of his coaching. Your expectations of a state championship are no where close to reality. Not even close. Ask anyone who has ever coached, and better yet, that has won one.3 points

The search committee was a farce. It was pointless. Only done for the sake of appearances. My wife knows someone who is very very very close to one of the committee members. Close as you can be without being the actual member. Wife was told 2 weeks ago this. Said any name that was brought up no matter who it was was shot down. The superintendent had only one name to ever recommend and that was Hickman. Superintendent thy will be done.2 points -

Reagan, I appreciate your respect of Coach Ethridge. You will not find a bigger fan of Coach Ethridge than me. That said, let's not overlook the facts that Coach Ethridge surrounded himself with talented assistant coaches, e.g., Butch Troy, Paul Carswell, Ken Clearman, Greg Davis, Bruce Bush, Terry Cobb, Jerry Hooper, and several others, and Coach Ethridge had some talent on the 1974-1977 teams. He had D-1 talent. In the seventies, Port Neches and Groves were growing. Refineries employed thousands, not hundreds, but thousands. Families moved to Port Neches and Groves. Some of those families had talented kids. There are not too many kids at PN-G today like Richy Ethridge (Texas Tech), Randy Ethridge, Ted Brack (TCU), Kyle Aguillard (Tennessee), Matt Burnett (Lamar), Robert DeRutte (LSU), Justin Eicher (Lamar), James Shipley, Von Robinson, and several others. LBs like Ted Brack, 6'2" or 6'3" and 215 lbs. that could run from sideline to sideline and violently end plays do not come through PN-G all that often. Neither do RBs like Justin Eicher...6'2" 200 - 210 lbs. He could run over your and away from you. Those teams from the seventies are long gone. Times have changed. Enrollments and districts have changed. SETX has changed. The game of football has changed. Coach Ethridge is the greatest chief to ever lead our Tribe. He's on the Mount Rushmore of PN-G greats, but he had talent on the sidelines and in the huddle when he made those championship runs. His son, Richy, was a MLB playing QB. Tough and savvy. He could read defenses at the line of scrimmage and get PN-G out of bad plays and into good plays because he was the coach's son. That doesn't happen all that often where you combine great coaching with great athletes, and your son directs the team and knows how to run your system. Just my 0.02 cents. RIP Coach Ethridge. I get it, Reagan, you have high standards. But, build in some leeway. Great coaches come in different packages. Peace.2 points

Lol, "a couple rounds in the playoffs and then going home"? Dude took Calallen to the semis 12 times in 37 years after taking HF to the semis twice in six years, meaning every three years he's playing for a shot at the dance. That's a hell of a bar. There's not many guys who've ever graced a sideline in Texas that could go to a school in the barrio and win 400+ games in the southern half of Texas with Galena Park's roster. You're saying the superintendent should've gone to him and said, "Look, I know you've been here 10 years, made nine straight playoff appearances, had seven 10+ win seasons, have three undefeated regular seasons, four district titles and have been to the semis two times(first in school history) but we're going to go a different route because you're not winning titles"? Let it go dude, Buchannan, Dodge and Surratt aren't the only great coaches in the state. Imagine making a straight faced argument that this guy isn't one of the GOATs: PHIL DANAHER Overall Record: 490-118-4 Calallen record: 422-81-2 Record in district play: 263-43-2 Playoff record: 93-41 District championship (includes co and outright): 28 Undefeated regular seasons: 12 Undefeated district seasons: 23 Seasons with 10 or more wins: 32 37 straight seasons in the playoffs (Longest active streak in Texas and second longest streak in Texas history) Source: Steven Floyd, Calallen historian(CC Caller Times)2 points -

Urgency should be in the mind set tonight at BU gym. It's time to take it off cruise control and go all gas and no brakes. The buzz/rumor is the Cougars got a 6'8" Transfer that may or may not be eligible to play tonight. UIL rule is 14 days which is great. LoL in BISD if you transfer from one the high schools to another no matter the reason your're Punished one year of eligibility. BISD rule. Never been challenged in any court which it should. One would think UIL rule supersedes school district rules. Enough said on that issue. Some can and some cant. All the talent here is home grown. Just my opinion the only obstacle preventing United from repeating is #0 K.Henry. Thus far that roll he played hasnt been matched. United has only 2 seniors this season one that starts and the other is a back up. That strong vocal bring it style every game leadership is missed. Two heavy weights tonight lace them up and let it do what it do. jmo...1 point -

He's dominating that region with the same demographics and talent pool as the rest of them. It's unrealistic to expect him to somehow compete against the teams from Austin, Dallas, Houston, etc. It's not like he's got a team from Katy over there or something pounding all the crappy teams.1 point -

2wedge reacted to Cougar14.2 for a topic
He is just the HFC/AC but I think that's a lot less stressful than what he would have to deal with being the AD at PNG. He just took Tomball to the semis even after a 4th place finish in district play and has some studs coming up. The facilities are better than PNG's and he makes more money than PNG is probably willing to pay him right now, plus he's doing it on the big stage in 6A. Dude literally got almost as far away from The Triangle as he could while still being in the Houston metro area, I doubt he's coming back before retirement which is probably 5-10 years away for him.1 point -

Thanks man. I am always a bit concerned when I post something like this, because someone might accuse me of criticizing or having an axe to grind or something like that, which I do not! I am glad you too see there is more to the Calallen - Danaher story. Coaches should be evaluated how they do with the talent they have at hand, and the level of competition they face. People really need to take the relative view for the most accurate assessment.1 point -

2022 Season
Justafan72 reacted to Cougar14.2 for a topic
I think if AJ plays on the d-line it's because we need him to, meaning we're "short" bodies on that side of the line of scrimmage. I think Coach Poth wants to play fast and be able to rush the passer from the interior, AJ is more of a run stuffer at this point in his development which is why you saw him play so much against Liberty Hill. I think he has potential 4-star ability at guard though, kid was moving furniture considering he was a freshman. I think Langley is going to play d-end which has been his more natural position since I've been watching him in little league. Awesome athleticism but he needs to little more of that dog mentality his brother has if he's going to be the Tyler Cooper type player we need him to be next year. I think a lot of the personnel placement will have to do with who we get in free agency this offseason too though.1 point -

Makes you wonder how much of an impact Riordan had? Not that he was the reason they were winning but him coming to Crosby in 2012 coincides with the start of their slide, SS' offensive numbers took a serious downturn in the following years. Meanwhile he's been a winner at both places he's been since and put up some serious offensive numbers. BF's offensive skillset may be exactly what SS has been in need of? SS has some title history, much like Chapel Hill did before Riordan took over after they went 13-40 the previous five seasons.1 point -

Silsbee is loaded with atheletes on the regular. The fact they have not won championships in football is not because the district pours more into basketball than football. To the contrary, the basketball program has not only won championships, but won period for a long time in spite of. It was only when Silsbee got an Administration that afforded the basketball program some of the same amenities as football,(ie: basketball class and the ability to go play outside the immediate area to name a couple), that Silsbee got over the hump championship wise. Football has had those amenities and more. Monetarily, there is no comparison between the two when it comes to outlay. Comparing this athletic program to to others in the area (WOS, Newton, etc) is really comparing communities. The Silsbee community values all their sports not just one or two. Bigger, stronger, faster works well for football, but basketball requires a level of skill that can only be attained through skill development. When bigger, stronger faster meets skilled in basketball, skilled at that game usually wins out at a more consistent rate. I will end with this, Silsbee is unlike anywhere else in this area. They don't take down the basketball goals or prevent basketball practices from happening or even games from taking place until football season ends. Why? because there are other students that are trying to be the best they can at their sport and are not afraid to go play schools while under manned. Before someone asks, yes I KNOW these things first hand.1 point -
