SmashMouth and one other reacted to Dirty_but_Dazzling for a topic
the very things that peaked my interest. lol. my son graduated last year and he is home this week because University of Houston is on spring break. my wife and I were talking bout this a couple days ago, when my son comes around the corner and says "we'll I only go 2 days a week." Smartass! I thought to myself about him.(one of the reasons I love him so much & he does have like 6 or 7 classes in those 2 days) Just so happens they all are Tuesdays and Thursdays this semester.2 points -
Lcm is getting turf field!!!
BEARCPA and one other reacted to oldschool2 for a topic
As I argued in the past: It costs a lot of money to maintain a grass field (water, mowing, maintenance, paint, fertilizer, etc.). A turf field is truly a big investment but saves money in other areas.. along with allowing all sports to use without fear of tearing up.. and in most weather conditions (wet). As for draws; nice facilities will bring players, coaches, teachers, parents, fans, playoff games, etc. Is that a guarantee? No. But kids don't transfer to a school with trash facilities because of the facilities or probably any other reason. All that aside, it's a show of faith that you care about your athletic programs and community. As good coaching friend of mine says, "if you don't turf your fields then you're losing money somewhere". And you're 100% correct, the mindset/mentality/culture of most of SeTx is for the most part stuck in the past.2 points -

Exciting times in the school district. I was told that turf is also being installed in the old sweat box gym so it can be used as an indoor practice facility for the outdoor sports.2 points

You'd be hard-pressed to find many 4a schools that play a tougher non-district schedule than Silsbee each year.2 points

Some folks have known but I will make it public. My time as a full time administrator/broadcaster is up. I told my wife of 33 years that when she retired from teaching that I would retire with her to the beach. She retired last May and I told her I would finish out the football and basketball seasons of this year then I would join her. (would have joined her in May but needed to stay on after the passing of our beloved admin WOSGrad). I am so ready to be a beach bum. I have enjoyed these past 17 years here on the site. I have seen it grow from just a little message board to now be considered a valuable media outlet. It truly has been a labor of love. First of all, I want to thank Jordan Wilson, the owner of this site, by inviting me on as a staff member and eventually an administrator. He trusted me with the help of running this site and allowed me to "do my thang" and start my broadcast career. It has truly been a blessing. Thanks I want to thank Todd Broussard (WOSGrad) who is looking down on us from heaven. He has been my partner in crime for all these years and is the reason this site is what it is today. He was the man!! I dearly miss my old friend and I hope that he is up there saying "job well done my friend". Thanks Todd for everything you did for me and this site. I want to thank all the staff members here. Particularly Lucas, Mack, Robert, Terry, Matthew and all of the other staff. You have helped make this the place to be as for Southeast Texas sports. Thanks for all the support over the years. Thanks to all the coaches that I have come to know and work with all these years. Thank you for your support and cooperation and your acceptance of me and SETXsports. I am truly grateful. Thanks to all the members here who really are what makes this site so great. I have become friends with several here and I cherish all the times we have spent on and off this site. God Bless all of you. I wish all and this site the very best. I will still be around some but it will be mostly from my chair on the beach with my toes in the sand holding a cold one. Thanks again to everyone and May God Bless.1 point -

I wonder if Teachers will stop crying about the fact that they aren't paid salaries comparable to people with full time jobs? I doubt it. That 187 day calendar is about to drop down to about 140/365 instead of the 240-250/365 that most Americans work. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Educators collectively overestimate the value of their profession. Always have, always will.1 point -

And my argument was specifically for investment purposes. Both financially and in your players/community along with the potential for transfers. Recruiting without recruiting. But as I said.. it was met with the, "what we have is good enough" attitude.1 point -

There are some advantages, but I can see more disadvantages. Kids who have free lunch may not get to eat on Fridays. I would think childcare would be an issue too for working parents. During football season, no more walking the halls with your jersey on or getting pumped at the pep rally before the game. Do the bus drivers take a pay cut? Do the lunch ladies and other supporting staff take a pay cut?1 point -

I do believe Brook will be much improved. Remember Silsbee was Sophmore driven..loaded till 2024, BU got 6 junior and 5 Sophmore so loaded till 2024. West Brook got a lot coming back also don’t know the breakdown but with Ashton tough until 2024 for sure. So king of the hill will be a challenge. Which is what you want. Now in the words of Rick Flair.. To be the man you got to beat the man.. Woo.1 point -
All you do is get on every sports page and talk trash about each team. Please tell us how you did playing sports in college? also, Sam Houston got blown out tonight against Rice. If you liking talking so much smack about everyone, throw your name out so we can how good you were? I’m betting you didn’t play sports.1 point

Lamar basketball
RETIREDFAN1 reacted to snakehead26 for a topic
I don't even know where to start with all this. In the other topic on the AD search there was a link to an interview with former baseball coach Jim Gilligan. He, of course will be diplomatic but even he said all the programs are down now. As far as basketball, under Tubbs and Foster we had 7 consecutive 20 win seasons with 4 NCAA tournament appearance and 3 NIT appearances. Since then we have had 3 seasons with 20 wins in the last 37 years. I will ramble on some more in another post but my question is why? Is it athletic directors, coaches, recruiting? Do recruits not like this area or campus? Is it too hard to recruit when you always have a losing program? We have tons of great talent even in our own area and a lot of them don't go the top name programs. Why can't we keep any of them around here?1 point -

snakehead26 reacted to spidersal for a topic
It’s not that I don’t like Lamar, I am totally frustrated by their lousy performance in all major sports. If you look at D1 rankings, they are almost dead last in every major sport and there are almost 400 D1 colleges mentioned. Football did not win a game because the NCAA called the only win a scrimmage, the mens basketball team did not beat one D1 school, the softball team is 8-60 the last year in a quarter, Franklin has a losing record in womens basketball as well as Davis in baseball Yes I am certainly frustrated and highly disappointed with an athletic program this poor1 point -
Imo Brook will surprise alot of ppl, who dont know what they have coming up,...You never know with kids, but if the ones I'm hearing attend Brook like they're suppose to, we may have a new king of the Hill in SETX basketball1 point

In my opinion, you and Todd WERE Setxsports. The behind the scenes leg work was outstanding and extensive. How many times did the mods ask questions and you both had answers quickly, no wavering or ambiguity and backed us up. The mods know and others might soon find out the void that has occurred with Todd’s passing and your retirement. It has been my privilege and pleasure to work with you. Job well done. Enjoy the beach and your other pursuits.1 point -

Yes they do but they don’t just walk on the floor and know how to play. Silsbee is the perfect example of players and parents that buy in to a system and are successful as a result.1 point -
Happy retirement Mike. Man, not may people get to make a career out of something they love, like sports. You blazed a trail. You have kept me informed. I love Silsbee Tiger basketball. I like football too but not nearly as much as basketball. Has it been 17 years? I guess so. I've been around for most of them. Before this board getting information on Silsbee sports was hard to do. The local Houston teams just don't excite me. Then the frustration ended. I would tweet on twitter. WOS would sometimes comment back. I didn't even know somebody was paying me attention. SE Texas fans have been blessed especially tiger basketball fans. You did a great job.1 point

well if he can have the right leadership around him - and put in work ethic - you 100% can be competitive - i absolutely love when a young man dedicated himself and creates opportunity from hard work i stressed to my son constantly 1) develop your body: work out grow muscles - run increase your endurance 2) institutionalize fundamentals of the game: practice until fundamentals are like breathing - you just do the simple things in game instinctively 3) develop mind: study film and the game - understand ppl are creatures of habit learn those tendencies - educate self in class room - and be a persons of humility/respect/teamwork/integrity/compliance/value creation 4) talent - all you can do here is master first 3 because you have 100% control there and use all that GOD birth you1 point -

You young whipper-snappers have a weird taste in music (or more accurately, noise). Good grief, no wonder this country is about to implode. Silsbee has to be the favorite next year along with Houston Washington. Maybe the next two years.1 point

From my perspective this game looked like a pretty even matchup. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit to see Silsbee take them if the met again tomorrow. I’d bought into the conventional wisdom that FF was pretty much unbeatable in 4A. Having seen this game I realize that’s simply not true. The Tigers made a lot of mistakes and were in no way playing over their heads. They played the same kind of game they’ve been playing for the last two weeks. In fact I think they played at least as well last Saturday and maybe better. The Tigers certainly didn’t catch a break from the officiating. I’ll be generous and call it about even both ways. Once the Tigers had fought back, which they were bound to do, it came down to pure happenstance, the bounce of the ball, two very good, evenly matched teams playing as hard as they could trying to catch a break or make a break and close it out. Obviously these two teams strengths were very different but they played off about evenly. Next year the state had better watch out for whoever comes out of Region III.1 point

Ever been to a Bucees? Ever been on a weekend or holiday? They have a hundred or more pumps, and on a weekend or holiday almost everyone is full. It only takes a few minutes to fill up our gas powered vehicles, but hours to recharge an EV. How will all of them get recharged? It takes a special kind of stupid to initiate a green plan without covering all the bases. A special kind of stupid? I’ve just described the current Democrat.1 point -
