Again.. I'll never take anything away from the knowledge of Art Briles or the success he's had in his career. You do understand, though, that Mount Vernon had some pretty good seasons before Briles got there.. right? And.. Briles brought a coach with him that had a kid living with him that was a pretty good player. If I remember correctly there was an issue with it for a while concerning the district committee. Anyway.. point being that Briles stepping into an already successful Mount Vernon job is a far cry from someone stepping into a Tarkington team. That's not personal.. it just is what it is.

Makes sense. Speaking of Finney.. who is another excellent coach.. I believe he missed the playoffs this year despite his track record. Just goes to show that it takes more than coaching. Still gotta have horses in the stable.

  4. The off-court stuff definitely doesn't sound great, but it is usually the assistant coach's job to keep track of player fouls and let the head coach know about foul trouble.

  5. There was a lot more to it. I went to several games and witnessed several things. Even asked why he was leaving a player in with 3 fouls in tart of second Qtr, he turned and said are you serious I didn’t realize he had 3 fouls and called time out to get him out. The call to remove him was made right after the season started because of some things that were said to the team players and him having someone else come in at practice and talk to them and somewhat coach them. Several complaints were made and it was addressed with him. Also lost several of the older players because of it, why we finished with several underclass man playing. There is something to say about a coach that has been with several teams in a very short time and most of them for 1 season. He seemed like a very nice guy but I have been around basketball all my life and I told my wife after the second game he will never make it as a coach. To win district wasn’t that hard considering most of the other schools lost players and district was weak other than West Hardin and Evadale had enough talent to pull it out.

  6. People can only relate to what they experience. Although in history books, no one reading this forum was there for slavery, Indian displacement and for most people, not even segregation laws in the 50’s and early 60’s. I will be 67 on my next birthday and I was 3 years old when the 60’s rolled around. Just like I wasn’t around for slavery, almost no one reading this was around for Jim Crow laws either. Yes times seemed better in the “old days” or maybe “better” is more appropriately described as “simpler”. Not locking your door, kids not coming home until after dark because their parents didn’t have to worry that they hadn’t seen you all day, some stores having blank checks at the checkout because you forgot yours and you were trusted to fill in your correct name and bank account number and so on. Some people (most?) even left their cars unlocked and many left their keys in the car. That includes the Black community. My best friend’s first cousins lived in Riverside in Orange and I used to go there a few times in the summer to play. We played hide and seek and other games with the Black kids living there and I don’t recall them being in before dark either. I don’t think their parents were worried about them getting stopped by the police for selling drugs or them being the victim of a drive-by shooting. It was a simpler time. Was there racism? Discrimination? Sure, but there was also a lot more freedom to move about without fear. Obviously there is now much more freedom technically/legally and merely acceptance. But is it better? Yes in a strictly legal and acceptance sense. When I first became a police officer in the mid-80s and even until the mid-90s, there was violent crime and n PA but it was mostly located in small pockets and they could easily be avoided. Now? There were no drive by shooting or violent crimes like robberies in neighborhoods. The local Stop and Rob convenience store? Sure and in those limited neighborhoods and I am not talking Black neighborhoods. There were several areas in Black neighborhoods in PA that I never went to for police services. There was simply no need. They were quiet and generally self policed. The violence was mostly concentrated in the areas of short Texas, Sally’s alley and a short strip of Houston Ave. I don’t think parents are less worried about their children today because it is different. Quite the opposite. Violent crime isn’t concentrated in a couple of small pockets of a city. People are not wise to leave their doors unlocked or even your car door if you are out of it for even a minute. I was probably in my late 20s when I first started thinking about locking car doors. So while it is easy for a 40 year old today to say it is better now, what is their experience time frame? A person turning 40 this year was 15 years old in 1997. That person has no direct knowledge of the “old days”. I could only guess but I think the Black kids that I played with in Orange who are approaching 70 years old, might long for the old days but without the discrimination. Maybe like, I wish it was like 2022 but back when I was a child in 1963. So yes things are bad now and they were bad then but for different reasons. It goes by a person’s experience. For all its faults, some of the previous generations had a much simpler life. It depends on if you look so the glass as half full or half empty. In my opinion….

Finney went 19-5 over two seasons at MV. Briles took over (and brought a ringer player in with him) and went 20-6 over two seasons. Thank God Briles was available to come in and rescue that program. Then again, the guy after Briles went just as far with a 14-1 record in his first season. So the coaches before and after Briles had better records? Maybe he didn't have nearly the impact you're insinuating he did.

Finney beat Briles. That, too, is fact. By the way, your rationale on the importance of record is a detriment to the quality of coaches. It's really what's wrong with parents/fans. Also... Odessa Permian isn't a great example to use in an argument that includes gas/oil booms.

Gotten worse? I'm going to need an explanation. If you're referring the 7-3 and 6-4 records.. you should look at the actual schedules. There's a nifty little website called maxpreps.com where scores and schedules can be looked up with pretty consistent accuracy for any team and any year. Losing two of the district games by 2 and 1 with a young, first year quarterback may not be considered "getting worse" to anyone with any football knowledge whatsoever. Maybe just individuals that base everything on records alone.. like you I'm guessing. Hey.. speaking of that. Just inform the next Tarkington guy to schedule cupcakes in the preseason. Maybe you're consider 5-5 as "turning the program around". Oh but then he'll just leave after having mastered that feat. Hmm... I don't know. Quite the predicament y'all have over there.

Actually when the Bear retired, Alabama did slip into mediocrity. It took 11 years before they made it and won another national title and that was with Gene Stallings (a former player for Bear Bryant) as HC. After he retired it was back to mediocrity until Saban came along.

  14. No, “Republicans” aren’t entertaining it. With about 275 million adults in this country, it is easy to find some minuscule group that believes something stupid. The further stupidity is when anyone believes that the tiny group represents nearly the entire race/party/ethnicity/etc. You might as well toss in, “you people”. Democrat US Representative Hank Johnson asked in a hearing if the island of Guam might capsize if we get too many Marines stationed there. If I suggested that “Democrats” or Blacks are so stupid, they entertain the idea that an island can (in his words) tip over and capsize, what would you think? Want evidence? There is a Black Democrat member of Congress saying it for all the world to see so it must be true….. right? When you start painting with a very broad brush, be prepared to get splattered.

  19. If you look hard enough, you can find something offensive about every human mascot. Pirates and Buccaneers were swashbuckling murderers and rapists. The Raider archetype draws on age-old bands of thieves and bandits that robbed stagecoaches and murdered travelers on the coachroads. The Minnesota Vikings appropriate Scandinavian history and culture. The Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish and the ULL Ragin’ Cajuns elevate stereotypically drunk, stubborn and aggressive depictions of Cajun and Irish Americans. Do we let that take the fun out of everything? And more to the point, when did culture become property? This country spent fifty years believing that the hallmark of diversity was cultural exchange. That was supposed to make our country stronger. Now, seemingly overnight, any person who’s not a product of a particular culture adopting customs or practices of that culture is stealing it? What happened to imitation being the highest form of flattery? The bottom line with PN-G is, we adopted the Indian mascot because Attakapa and Karankawa Indians were the original inhabitants of Port Neches. Generations of local residents have found Indian artifacts in their backyards, and the presence of Indian burial mounds in Port Neches is well documented. Most of Southeast Texas would have no earthly idea Indians ever lived here were it not for the constant reminder that PN-G is. When the first generation of the original Port Neches High School’s students made that decision in recognition of the town’s history back in 1925, it was, ironically enough, arguably a progressive decision, by the standards of the day. This happened in an era when most of America was reviled by anything Indian. Most white people were actively trying to stamp out evidence the Indians ever inhabited America, but the people in Port Neches weren’t. At roughly the same time PNHS adopted the Indian mascot, my quarter-Cherokee great grandfather was losing the family blacksmithing practice he’d inherited from his white father because the people of Wood County, Texas, didn’t want to do business with an Indian blacksmith. My three-times great grandmother, a full blooded Cherokee woman who died a few years earlier, spent the last decade or so of her life terrified the government was going to take the family farm, round her up and send her to Indian Territory, all because my white three-times great grandfather died before she did and wasn’t around to stop them anymore. Based on the documentation we have, the probable inference is that my four- and/or five-times great grandparents walked the Trail of Tears. My eighth-Cherokee grandfather, who could pass for white, never spoke a word of his heritage publicly after he moved to Orange County, for fear of suffering the same employment troubles his father did. The hardest thing for me to reconcile in elementary school was why my grandparents were so quiet about our Cherokee lineage, when my peers thought it was pretty cool. Looking back today, I know my experience was different than theirs because anything Indian was cool at PN-G, in an era when it wasn’t anywhere else in America. Now, that striking contrast between cultural attitudes at PN-G and in the country at large, which has been inculcated for generations and was so progressive for its day, is suddenly racist? We’re supposed to give up that legacy because political winds shifted and social media makes it easy for internet low-lifes who’ve never stepped foot in Mid-County to harass elementary, middle and high school kids on Twitter? I don’t think so. In so many ways, this community has emulated exactly what the world knows American Indians to be: proud people, who produced strong warriors, that fought for decades to preserve their homes, their families and their way of life, against hopelessly overwhelming odds. I have watched this town demonstrate that same enduring spirit time and time again. Through hurricanes, explosions, cyber attacks, and national crusades against the cross in our park, we have always stood firm. This time is no different. We have never given in to all those things before, and we’re damn sure not about to give in to naked attempts to humiliate and intimidate our children now. I ran a poll in the Port Neches neighborhood watch group, which has thousands of current Mid-County residents in it, last weekend. Hundreds of responses poured in. The vast majority - 87% - said PN-G should keep all of its traditions exactly as they are. The community is as united about this as it’s ever been about anything. The Beaumont Enterprise falsely claimed the community protested the mascot in a headline because 17 people, many of whom don’t even live in PN-G, put on a protest outside a training for school board members. The reality is that the community demonstrates its actual sentiment when 8,000 purple-clad PN-G fans show up in the stadium five times a year. The best way that we can honor the Indian spirit we have revered and emulated for so many generations, is to stand up for our beliefs, our values, our traditions, our home and our kids, the same way they fought valiantly to do for nearly all of the nineteenth century. I can think of no better way to honor my own ancestors, and nothing else they’d prefer that I do. We know our history, we respect our history, and we live our history - if we didn’t, we never would have been the PN-G Indians to begin with. This community is no stranger to great challenges. Every time, it has met them with perspicacious, persevering pride, and firm, fervent faith. And every time, this community has emerged victorious. It’s who we are, and what we speak to every time we say, we are PN-G. This time will be no different. Always be Faithful.

  25. No.... this is what started the conversation and someone having to have a sit down because the person had nothing to do with school and would come in and pretty much take over the practices. Shortly after is when some of the older boys left the team, mine wouldn't have left (that's the parent's fault) if he was still there but I would have had a serious conversation with the appropriate people about some of the things that were said, and the coach let it happen. If you came to any of the games, then you knew the coaching knowledge was lacking in several areas of the court. All coaches have to learn somewhere but usually it starts as an assistant and not the head coach. Evadale needs to change a few things and pay for a quality coach if that is what they are wanting, obviously the money you offer limits what you can afford as they just learned. Hey, my son graduated so it wasn't my issue just felt bad for several of the players during the game.

  27. I don't want it either way. You're the one who wants it both ways. Briles gets all the credit for taking a team that Finney built up and doing basically the same as Finney but having one good playoff run, but the next guy comes in and does better than Briles and goes just as far in the playoffs, and you're willing to attribute it to "Brile's foundation." The truth of the matter is they both built off of Finney's foundation. Only in Smitty-think is it possible to make the argument that a coach can take over a team with 6 wins in the two previous seasons, go 19-5 in his two seasons there, be replaced by a guy who goes 20-6 in two seasons, who's then replaced by a guy who's 14-1 his first year, and give all of the credit to the guy in the middle.

Fact of the matter is, the record got worst. I understand what you are trying to say. But a championship-type coach doesn't matter who they play. They'll find a way to win. So, with that being said, it appears that when Finney gets in the ring with the big dogs that he can't hang. Or, would another excuse like, the natural gas boom hasn't reached Winnsboro yet?! You think it mattered to Ethridge at PNG that he got Odessa Permian in finals? Championship-Type coaches usually take care of business regardless the odds! Oh, BTW, records are FACTS. Trying to rationalize why it happened, after the fact, is just personal opinions that can be changed on the spur of the moment.

No. Still no. Just like with PNG, and every other time you've asked this same question on all of the different threads you've asked it. None of those coaches, or even those coaches working together could bring Tarkington a state championship in ten years. Would the team's record improve? Yes. Would they make the playoffs, and maybe even win a playoff game or two? Yeah, that would happen. But no, they're not going to take a team with almost no talent pool and turn them into a powerhouse. The ONLY way that one of these coaches could turn a school with few athletes and minimal community support into a powerhouse would be if they took a job in Houston or Dallas ISD, and could actively recruit players from other schools in the city (and get away with it). Likewise, any example you bring up from 10-15 (or more) years ago where a coach came in and turned things around are now a null and void argument, because those teams didn't have to face these dallas and houston all-star teams, and kids were still held to the requirement of playing for the schools they're supposed to be zoned to.

    This Board Needs....

A guy breaks into a house looking for money and guns and finds a couple in bed. He orders the guy out of bed and ties him to a chair. While tying the girl to the bed, he gets on top of her, kisses her neck, then gets up and goes into the bathroom. While he is in there, the husband tells his wife,” Listen, this guy is an escaped convict, look at his clothes. He probably spent a lot of time in jail and hasn’t seen a woman in years. I saw how he kissed your neck. If he wants sex, don’t resist, don’t complain, do whatever he tells you. Satisfy him no matter how much he nauseates you. This guy is very dangerous. If he gets angry, he’ll kill us. Be strong honey. I love you. “ To which the wife responds,” He wasn’t kissing my neck. He was whispering in my ear. He told me he was gay, thought you were cute, and asked me if we had any Vaseline. I told him there was some in the bathroom. Be strong honey. I love you!”

    WO-S DC?

I'm not trying to diminish one over another and I didn't play, so I am going by what my friends who did had to say. I was there 85-89 when the dynasty started and back then it was understood that although Dan was the head coach, that was Coach T's team. "Defense wins championships." Coach T became DC in 1981. He was also the strength and conditioning coach. Also importantly, he was the disciplinarian. WO-S' reputation is defense and conditioning. Discipline. From 1985 to now WO-S has missed the playoffs just 5 times. '92 when we forfeited some district games, '99, then 2001-2003. Coach T was gone to Palestine and Huntsville 2001-2003. It could be a wild coincidence. The district was tough. Going 8-2 and missing the playoffs is tough. But, it could also be the proof in the pudding. I bleed blue and silver. I WANT to be wrong. I just don't think I am. People were fighting for Toby because they believed he was the best chance to continue a legacy because he spent so much of his life a part of it. Every little change we hear about from outsiders coming in sounds like the death of what has worked for so long. It just sounds like it is really finally over.
