  2. This is what happened when a lawyer asks a yes or no question and the person does not only answer yes or no. I got lucky because I did not anticipate the question but I pretty much destroyed a defense attorney’s case when he ask me a yes or no question and I blurted out a short answer. His defense was that I made an arrest because a person filed a complaint against me. That was notwithstanding the fact that they were about 10 people civilian witnesses but the defense attorney was going to try to sway the jury that it was all because of me. I guess I had magical power over 10 witnesses that did not know me. His question was, aren’t you familiar with my client because she filed a complaint against you? I said, “Yes, that and other things”. He passed the questioning back to the district attorney who asked me, can you name those other things. I had arrested three of her sons for felonies which prompted the complaint in one instance. Of course the defense attorney quickly objected the moment I mentioned an arrest and normally that would be correct. I cannot talk about her or her family’s history as it is not relevant to the crime at hand. EXCEPT!!….. under the rules of evidence, if the defense opens with a line of questioning, it opens the door for the district attorney to follow up. When the defense attorney objected, the district attorney in response said, Your Honor the defense opened with “are you familiar with my client” and the officer said yes that and other things. I believe we are entitled to those other things. The judge looked at me and said, officer you can testify about anything you wish relating to the defendant. The defense attorney literally put his face in his hands and sat there. When I finished the defense attorney asked me one more question, but you have never arrested the defendant for a felony? I gave a one-word answer, no. The witness is excused.

  3. Lumberton wasn't a decent 4A team last year, right? They didn't even get in for various reasons. Meanwhile, Big Sandy went undefeated in district and multiple rounds deep, beat other 4A schools, and yes.. habitually beats bigger schools. And Kountze got a share of their district title in just one classification lower. Also.. Kountze also beat bigger schools and often does as well. Even though they're both normally on a different level (over the last decade or so) they still were able to beat much bigger schools last year. Yet Mitchell (terrible, right?) found a way to get those two wins over area coaches who frequent deep playoff runs.. with a Lumberton team minus their D1 stud from a year before that didn't make the playoffs. Save the dumb reasoning.. I absolutely believe that Foster is the best coach in SeTx and I believe Joubert is in that conversation as well. But to imply that Mitchell is a terrible coach who only rode the coattails of McClure is beyond ridiculous. He may not be the pick for Coach of the Century but he coaches his tail off and gets what he can out of what he has. People that base success on record alone are moronic. .. In my opinion.

  4. I believe it was actually three districts in Beaumont. Beaumont, French and SP. SP voted not to join BISD so BISD (board I think) voted to dissolve the district and forcing the merger. That set off some federal lawsuits about diluted Black votes and SPISD eventually merged with BISD. I think French ISD was small and absorbed by BISD.

  7. BREAKING: Beaumont ISD school board votes against returning the name of Carrol A. "Butch" Thomas Educational Support Center to the football stadium. The BISD board voted 4-3 against returning the name of Dr. Carrol Thomas to the football stadium. It was renamed BISD Memorial Stadium in 2018. Dr. Thomas is a former superintendent. Supporters say his tenure merits placing his name back on the stadium. Critics argue problems that occurred in the district during his tenure should keep his name off the stadium. Stacey Lewis Jr. made the motion to rename the stadium after Dr. Thomas. He says his constituents demand the return and were hurt when the name was taken off the facility. He says the naming rights issue is separate and hasn't led to a company deciding to pay the district for those rights. Board member Denise Spooner says the naming rights are important for district revenue, and she says many of the 6,000 constituents who voted for her don't support the return. She says if Dr. Thomas' name is placed back on the stadium, more people will continue to leave the district. She says his leadership is not something to be celebrated. She says to "honor a man who profoundly failed the community" is the wrong message to send. She says the district may never recover from the damage if it makes the change. Board president Robert Dunn asked Stacey Lewis to amend his motion to approve the renaming only if enough donations are given to the district to pay for the renaming, to avoid using taxpayer dollars. He wants to sell the naming rights. Lewis declined.

  13. My memory is definitely going downhill, but I really don’t remember French having it’s own District, but between the two of us, we have it pretty close. So back to the name change. Change the name to SOUTH PARK INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT. 😂😂😂🤣🤣👽🤣🤣😂😂😂 Then we can forget about Thomas. Name the Stadium Durley Stadium. End of problem. PS; more I think on it, maybe French did have. Lol, I’m reminded of an old saying, Of all the things I’ve lost, I miss my mind the most.

    Coaches on the Move

According to people on here they were until they had a lot of injuries, which is the only reason they didn't get in. So at the beginning of the year they should've been decent. That said, if we're giving him credit for beating 2A and 3A teams, then we have to give him credit for losing by 60 to silsbee and 40 to Nederland and 30 to HF and only winning 4 district games and losing 10 games by 10+ on the year, right? Again, I'm not saying this guy is a bad coach, but there's a whole network of connected posters on here who give him all of the credit for everything good that happens, and excuse all of the bad. This is what I take exception to.

    Coaches on the Move

I don't like him because he keeps making new screen names and coming on here and talking about how great he is, and how bad other coaches are. As for coaching, I don't have any issue with him as a coach, but he's been very fortunate at Lumberton with them dropping classifications and having a D1 player drop in his lap. That in itself is just part of coaching, and I don't fault him for it. I just take exception to the folks (including "not him") that have declared him an elite coach, one of the best in the area, etc. etc., when he's won a couple of playoff games against .500 and below teams and had one really good regular season, despite dropping from an exceptional 5A district to 4A, and despite having the services of the best L-town player in the program's history for 4 years. The fact that he won 1 district game in 5A, and then missed the playoffs the first year McClure is gone, has me curious to see what happens the next couple of years over there.

Game 2 Friday at 6 pm. If season ended with current standings Lamar would play Sacramento State in first round of WAC tournament.

    Coaches on the Move

Guys this whole Mitchell thing is ridiculous. I was on staff with him in little ole Deweyville. Single handily turned a girls program around there and made them super competitive- maybe 17-18 wins? I don’t exactly remember. He coaches hard and makes his players better. To say he’s carried by Brock is so dumb. Brock is really good. I watched him his junior year and thought that there was absolutely no way he was a D1 player and then he was Developed, at least in part, by Mitchell. two years under 15 wins and that was his 2nd And 3rd year at lumberton. He’s right at .500 during his career and right under .500 at lumberton. Lumberton plays so dang hard. Those kids are always prepared. Most of the time out matched- and most of the time in the game. Defensively, Mitchell is in the elite of coaches in SETX. Y’all just don’t like him because he makes you uncomfortable because he coaches so damn hard.

Man this thread, I know for a fact McClure would tell you Mitchell prepared him to be a college player and second how many times has Lumberton made the playoffs? I googled Lumberton basketball and Lumberton actually had a kid play at Texas A&M what did Lumberton do when that kid play at Lumberton? I’m just asking because I don’t know much history with Lumberton Basketball.

    Coaches on the Move

I know some of y'all think I'm a "hater", but there are several accounts on here that suspiciously show up in certain situations and throw Mitchell's name into conversations, and they generally give him too much credit. I'll preface this by saying I think he's done fine over at Lumberton. Their record has improved under him, and I do think he has something to do with that. That said, he also gets a lot of credit for a couple of things that he had nothing to do with. The first key to Lumberton's newfound success is that year after he took over Lumberton they dropped to 4A after previously having to play in one of the best 5A districts in the state with PAM, Nederland, Central, and Ozen. His record his first year in which he coached in that district was no better than the guy that came before him (9-17, 1-11). The second lucky break for him was Brock McClure. He's coached at Lumberton 5 years. The year in 5A he went 1-11 in district. The year in 4A without McClure he had basically a .500 team, and 4-8 in district. The three years in 4A with McClure he made the playoffs 3 times, had one really good season, and won three total playoff games against sub-.500 or .500 teams. How much is mitchell and how much is McClure and the drop to 4A? I'm really curious to see what he does next year. I don't think it's realistic to expect much more than what Lumberton did this year, but if they return to what they should be without a D1 player (.500ish, fighting for fourth most years) then you have to stop crowning Mitchell as rehabilitation mastermind as well, and just say he does a pretty good job out in Lumberton. All of the talk of him being an elite coach and whatnot is premature, especially with only one truly good season under his belt at Lumberton in 5 years (a season where he beat two mediocre teams in the playoffs before getting doubled up by Huffman in the 3rd round).

  37. The folks just need to move the name at West Brook's on campus stadium to the newer stadium. Alex Durley is very deserving of having his name on that stadium for all to see. Or name it Jerry Levias Stadium. He is more deserving than Dr. Thomas. Another would be to combine the name, call it Durley-Levias Stadium.

  38. This infuriates me. I worked for BISD for 15 years, including when all of this happened. It's absolutely jaw-dropping how many people were stealing from BISD during the time of the bond, and many of them were under the direct supervision of Thomas. There were dozens of examples of fraud, theft, cronyism, etc (Report details misuse of Beaumont ISD bond funds as Thomas avoided scrutiny (beaumontenterprise.com)). Thomas also benefited from a poorly negotiated contract that saw his base salary nearly triple over the course of 10 years, making him the highest paid superintendent in the state, even though he was doing a poor job leading a fairly poor, fairly small district. The problem is that the people of color in charge weren't concerned about students and the community, only about sticking it to the white man that had held them down for so long. Calvin Walker bilked BISD for millions of dollars. The majority African American schoolboard under Butch Thomas actually voted to renew his yearly contract AFTER he'd been charged with stealing millions from the district, and had taken a plea deal where he forfeited millions of dollars that he'd stolen from BISD (BISD Board of Trustees react to Calvin Walker's mistrial | 12newsnow.com). The school board voted NOT TO SEEK TO HAVE THE MONEY HE STOLE REPAID, even though more than $2M he stole was available to them!!! (BISD renews Walker's contract, votes against more restitution information (ctinsider.com)) The district and school board chose to let the feds keep the money Walker had stolen from them rather than admitting that he had stolen from them. Here is a list of thefts and scams that the district knew about Walker committing at the time that they renewed his contract ( Calvin Walker jury selection to start in Beaumont | 12newsnow.com). My personal favorite is the $600,000 he charged BISD to cover the cost of renting bucket trucks to complete work he'd been hired to do. He did this even though he already owned bucket trucks, and did not need to rent any Under Thomas the district spent tens of thousands of dollars on copies of (low quality) books full of misinformation written by communication director Jessie Haynes (Problem with BISD book is source, not contents (beaumontenterprise.com) During Thomas' reign, the BISD Comptroller and Director of Finance were both arrested and convicted for stealing more than $4M (Former Beaumont ISD Employees Sentenced for Stealing over $4 Million | USAO-EDTX | Department of Justice). Patricia Lambert, an assistant superintendent under Thomas was convicted of theft and falsifying test scores. BISD also spent hundreds of thousands of dollars for her son to print items for BISD, even though he did not have a printing business. He simply paid a real printing business to print these items and then charged BISD a marked up price (Former Beaumont ISD Assistant Superintendent Guilty of Federal Charges — FBI). As everyone knows, his leadership was so poor that the district was eventually taken over by the state (TEA announces takeover of BISD, New superintendent to be appointed | 12newsnow.com). Thomas took off before anything could stick to him. He still to this day claims that he didn't know anything about the crimes being committed under him. In my opinion if he had no idea all of this was going on, it reflects worse on him than if he was actually involved in the corruption. After all of this, thousands of BISD employees had to go through the stress of seeing if their position ended up on the RIF list, as hundreds of employees were let go in an effort to save money after BISD's finances had been run into the ground. That was one of the most terrifying times of my life, as there was considerable talk about my entire school being shut down in an effort to reduce costs for the district. I literally could go on and on, and on and on and on and on with examples of theft and mismanagement under Thomas. The naming of a stadium after him was entirely racially motivated. the sad part was that it wasn't named after him because he was African American, but instead because naming it after him made white people mad. And now here we go again. There are a dozen plus people of color who could rightfully be honored with BISD's stadium being named after them. There is also the option of finding a sponsor who'll pay for the name. Instead the board is once again putting "sticking it to the man" ahead of responsible spending and putting it's students, staff, and community first.

    Westerberg to Salado

I think TW gets somewhat slighted for having KM. He was a state title winning offensive coordinator at Garland and won his first title at Allen in '08 over a more talented FB Hightower team. KM may be the best high school QB ever to play in Texas but he wouldn't have gotten near that status had he stayed in Lewisville and played for those 2-8/1-9 Farmer teams at the time. TW benefited from KM playing for him but you also have to say KM benefited greatly from playing for TW too. Yes, the 7,000 kids at Allen gives you a much larger talent pool but it by no means dictates that you'll have the most talent. For instance, North Shore only has about 4,500 kids and is 70% Hispanic but has dwarfed Allen over the years in terms of high level prospects produced. Duncanville has about the same number of kids as North Shore but also has "limited" open enrollment meaning they can legally put together a South Dallas select team every year. Duncanville's neighbor Desoto has less than 2,800 kids and Allen can't hold a candle to the school they call Desoto U due to the amount of high level prospects they pump out on a regular basis. I'm not saying TW is the greatest coach ever, I'm just saying that some of those "advantages" that a lot of people attribute to his success aren't as much of an advantage as some people make them out to be.

    Can Beto Win?

I agree, and I think you’re missing something in the point I was making. The difference is this: marijuana can stay in your system for over a month in some cases, and almost always will show up several days after use. If I drink vodka Friday after work and you test me on Monday, it’s all good. If I toke up Friday, not only will I test positive on Monday, but there’s a good chance I’ll still test positive the following Monday as well. How are you going to fire me for something that is legal, that I did off the clock, and quit effecting me in any way days before I went to work.
