West Orange-Stark (21) @ Newton (24) - FINAL

I miss the post game interviews from coach t lol.. the new coach is just like " yeah that was a really good team we played just missed on some opportunities"... coach t would or been like. I wasn't happy with the way we played they better figure it out or I'll find some one who will.. and that's a speech after a 3 touchdown win lol... don't wanna hear the one after a loss haha5 points -
Bug, I think it's many things that begin with changing from the 50. I think the present coach is a great person, but, I think it's a poor decision to come in and the first thing you do is change the first thing you said you wouldn't change. That also happens to be the foundation the program was built on. You know, it's kind of one of those deals, if your going to come in and change the foundation of the program, you sure as heck better be successful at it. I agree with DJ in that we don't have the personnel to run the 40. There's a reason we ran the 50 all these years. The lineman you need at the 3 techniques we don't have every year. The 50 plays into what we have in abundance, quickness. That, and we don't tackle like Mustangs anymore and I can only wonder if we still hit and tackle in practice (we may, that's just speculation). I've seen the people on FB blaming it on a young team and an overall lack of talent from years past. I coached these kids and the 10 classes before them. This class has as much talent, experience and ability as the last 2 or 3. All in all, I hope they get this thing rolling. But, when you make changes to something that didn't need changes, you put yourself on a much shorter leash than you would had you truly attempted to "continue the tradition".3 points

I don’t think talent is down. I wish I could find the podcast from early August where the 3 guys from Texas High School football made their predictions for the state championship games in all classes. All three of them picked a WO-S-Carthage matchup and two of them picked WO-S to win it all.3 points

I sure thought he was gonna be the next wos coach. And did most of the city. I know he's an offensive guy but he knows what mustang football is about. And he would of got the right guy to run the defense without changing the formation. Plus I think the offensive would be alot better with him there..... just my thoughts while I've been watching college ball all day drinking a few 😅3 points -

Hard to see the big picture from 100 miles away. Most of those folks drive in, and most of us drive out. The new plant about to be built. Money yes, population growth no. I actually think it's gonna be worse for us. If people move in to work they're gonna buy in BC, OF, or LCM. Not to mention our stadium is gonna stink like some others I've been to that are close to refineries. One thing that does keep people here is the program. Now there's another option. Peevey knew what was coming his way. Smartest move I've seen in a long time. And the "in or OUT" comment? I've always been IN. Even when we weren't winning state every year. So have others here on this site who have the rings to prove it. They're not happy with the situation either. There's also another prominent citizen, and former player, that WE see on TV representing US in various ways. I haven't seen him at a game yet either. So when I walked out early in the 3rd against PNG, it hurt to know that they had let us all down. They as in those in charge of making the decisions. Either the coach who proclaimed to keep the tradition the same. Or the DC that didn't know our system. Or the Super that wouldn't take any recommendations from the committee. Or those elected officials who know what's best, and don't care about the voices of the constituents. Anyway back to this game... is Shaw gonna be back? Heard he was injured with his ankle wrapped after the Newton game.2 points -

Huffman game was on TL but like I said, can't always trust that the game will be broadcast till after the fact. I can only state what I know for fact. No speculation. Coach T and staff on many occasions scouted a team that they put emphasis on when they had the opportunity to see them live (i.e. bye week or played on Thursday). I have been in several press boxes and seen this with my own eyes. Coach H was one of those staff members that I personally saw do this. He's just learning from the best. Coach T is old school and when he had an opportunity to see a team live that he put emphasis on, he took it. Didn't want to count on some outside broadcast entity to do it for him. BTW, this is as recent as last year. I can say over the years, Hooks and Thompson scouted more teams in advance (weeks out) than most coaching staffs did in this area. I have seen them many times in press boxes and the bleachers in Silsbee and other places and it not necessarily be the opponent for next week.2 points -

I have personally seen Coach T and his staff scout a team that was that many weeks out. His emphasis was on district opponents and not so much on non district opponents. Particularly when you don't play on a Friday night and you have an opportunity to see that team live. Just saying it happens all the time.2 points -

I agree... it's Not the kids. This is a team that returns alot of experience. That just lost to the eventual state champion in the region finals. And were expected to have the talent to make it to Dallas in December.1 point -
I agree with you. Was very perplexed by the decision in the first place. Westbrook has struggled on defense for a long time. They weren’t great when they played for the state title. I watched them play, and they were constantly misaligned, out flanked, and poorly coached. Just my opinion, anyways. I’d be most concerned about the discipline of the kids and the structure of the program moving forward as well. WOS will always have talent, and tough kids. That’s not a question.1 point

It’ll be a gradual decline into mediocrity imo.1 point -
WOS will still win a whole bunch of games. They will still play several rounds deep in the playoffs. They still have quality athletes. Hell, the way the district has been bleeding students the last 2 decades, they could be 3A-D2 one day. They will always be competitive. But…. I don’t feel they will ever be the WOS they use to be. Not unless better decisions, and better hires are made. The further we get away from the DRH and CT era’s, and the impact they had on the program, the more they will decline. How to kill a program? Get rid of any and everyone that had to do with past success, and change the philosophies and schemes that created the success. Coach T was a tough, hard nosed, old school disciplinarian. He was the S&T coordinator. Take that away, and replace him with anyone, and it’s a downgrade. I don’t care what kind of college experience the guy comes from.1 point

As a public school administrator, over the last few years, there have been a substantial increase in student infractions in all areas of discipline, in my opinion. Society, as a whole, is part of the problem. My hope and prayer is that our student athletes will stay focused and continue to be leaders on campuses. Unfortunately, we still have to deal with all the variables that have an effect on school sports.1 point -

With the rise of Hudl, scouting isn't done like it used to be. Most scouting now is done via Hudl in lieu of the cost of sending out scout teams all over the place.1 point -
That hasn't happened with the current varsity group, but, depending on where the season ends up, will be a real problem in the future.1 point

There not.i have a nephew that plays!! And they are respectful towards the coaching staff.and they really are trying. But, the problem is there been forced to learn on the fly. And it's confusion. U got kids running on and off the field.dont know who is supposed to be in the game.if ppl truly watching there games.they would know in every game they either not lining up right or they blow coverage.and this has happened in every game.i don't mind the losses!! Bcz, both teams were gud.but, even when CT was there it wasn't this much confusion.give an example.when CT took over he wanted to go back to power football but after seeing how he didn't have the personal to do this.he went back to what they knew.and they made a run.ppl forget that.all I'm saying if things are confusing the kids.just go with what they know on both sides of the ball.1 point -
We have 8 back on each side of the ball from a regional finalist. The senior class didn't lose from 7th thru JV. Talent isn't the issue.1 point

Which game are you asking was on TL? As for scouting the upcoming team, pretty sure the staff has already had film (Hudl) on that team. Just an opportunity to catch a district team live. Can't always depend on TL doing the game until after the fact. Also, sometimes those TL camera angles don't do a scout justice.1 point -

If it's October 7th and you plan to stay in Abilene that night, I would recommend heading to Strawn for some Chicken Fried at Mary's before going over to Gordon to watch Gordon-Gorman. About an hour drive from Abilene but it should be a good game. Or best matchup in the state that weekend might be Cherokee at Richland Springs. Drive down then maybe spend the night in Brownwood or San Saba afterwards. Huge rivalry game and lots of bad blood it seems over the 3 year suspension of Jerry Burkhart, Richland Spring's coach. It's about 2 hours from Abilene.1 point -

You are correct it is still early. This team has a grit to them and work extremely hard on the court. They are quietly making a name for themselves. They have a great test this weekend in Leander at Volleypalooza. 68 of the top volleyball teams in the state will be there. I am excited to see these girls compete against some of the top 6a's and 5a's in the state. A tough schedule is ahead on Thursday to open tournament versus: 6a Hebron 6a Allen 6a San Antonio O'Conner (#1 team in San Antonio at the moment)1 point
