Port Arthur Memorial 52 6A #2 Beaumont United 58/FINAL
Mr. Buddy Garrity and 2 others reacted to BMTSoulja1 for a topic
This game was very interesting and entertaining to say the least. Tale of two halfs here. BU was red hot from 3 in the first half then PA was lights out in the second half. Started off pretty much looking like we were the aggressors. Even went in a big run at the beginning of the 3rd period and went up by 20. Then #4 from PA got hot and got them eventually back in the game down by 3. Key free throws late helped BU squeak by. This PA team is GOOD. Some questionable substitutions late for them, it ohh well. Pretty good crowd. Enjoyed the back and forth with the PA guys. All in love though. They chanted overrated and our crowd pointed to the back to back banners. They brought up football and we brought up head to head matchups and so forth. All that aside, I don’t understand how this team was only able to put up 27 points the night before against the Ant Mound. And for the love of me, I don’t know why the PA guards on fast breaks were not dishing to a slashing high flyer, Jones, instead of forcing tough layups in traffic. I saw at least 5 opportunities where it could’ve been like 5 easy dunks for this kid. Work on stuff like this and I see PA not losing another district game.3 points -

If I am a high school basketball coach in this area, I would not waste my time scheduling any Houston ISD school. They are as unprofessional as they come. Two games were canceled this week, one without any notice. Houston Yates was scheduled to play at Little Cypress-Mauriceville today but called and canceled the game on Monday. Then, without notice, Houston Furr no showed for their game last night at West Orange-Stark. This is not the first time (nor will it be the last) that a Houston ISD school pulled this unprofessional move. In regards to the Yates/LC-M game, LC-M had already played at Yates the last two seasons. All Coach Jeffcoat was wanting was a return game. When I saw the game on the schedule and the date that it was to be played (last day to play before Christmas break) first thing I thought was Yates backing out of the game. When I got the phone call from Coach Jeffcoat Monday, I was not surprised. There was some excuse given but IMO, the reason for Yates canceling was more about not being able to afford losing to a team like LC-M, which they would have. Furr not even showing and not calling WO-S to cancel the game is as unprofessional as it gets. Decisions like this is why HISD is looked down upon by others in the state. This all comes from the top (HISD admins). Schools like LC-M and WO-S simply don't matter to them and could careless about any ramifications. As far as I am concerned, I hope no area school ever schedules a Houston ISD school. Simply not worth the potential aggravation of losing a scheduled game.2 points -

Since both Furr and Washington added a PG to their rosters for this season, I would probably be a little more conservative than those numbers. Silsbee beat Furr last year by 11. I would have Silsbee favored this year by 7. Silsbee beat Washington by 6. I would have Silsbee favored by 4.2 points -

I think its a great thing for HF to be in a strong district. Iron sharpens iron, and makes HF stronger for the playoffs. What you don't want is to be in a weak district like 3A is (for the moment), but I think Anahuac is growing up quickly, and OF looking pretty good too. In 4A if HF can play WOS, Silsbee and Jasper tough, that bodes well. As for 5A-I, we have enough challenges as it is. In 5A-II PNG leads the way, but sorry to say I think 6A is hopeless for Beaumont.1 point -

Cool facts about PNG for those who are interested. Please do not take his as bragging. I am only interested in sharing to those who love high school football or want something to compare their program to. I am a proud Indian and love to talk with others. PN-G has won 65% of its 88 playoff games. PN-G has won 57 playoff games. PN-G has been the district champions 27 times. PN-G has been to the bi-district 34 times PN-G has been to area 12 times. PN-G has been to regionals 17 times PN-G has been to the Quarter-finals 11 times. PN-G has been to the semi-finals 9 times PN-G has been to the state championship 7 times. PN-G has won 3 state championships. Only one team in SETX has been to the State championship more time than PN-G and that is the mighty WOS Mustangs with 8 trips. The other great team from SETX to TIE PN-G for trips to the State Championship is the mighty Newton Eagles. We do not have the talent of WOS or Newton. Definitely not SOC. They had over 180 scholarship offers to their team vs a minor handful to PNG. Coaching has been huge for us this season. Congrats to SOC on a magical season, Hats off to you and your program. PN-G had a magical season of their own defeating the #2 #3 and #5 teams in the state. Thank you SETX family for your support. Thank you SETXSPORTS for your support. I have received so many messages of encouragement from many of you and your support warmed my heart. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Even those who sent negative messages at least you recognized the feat of making it this far. Thanks again for making this magical season feel like we are ne big family. Far those who said due to demographics we would never again make it to state I hope you see that there can and will always be opportunities to make it with the right combination of kiddos and coaching and that demographics cant stop a team from making it. Even in this day of recruiting, building super magnet schools and putting all the best athletes on a single team with a goal of making a SC teams like a PNG, Nederland, PAM, WB, BU, Lumberton, Vidor, Dayton, Jasper, WOS, Newton, West Sabine, Shelbyville, and all the other teams that are landlocked, in a dead growth area can and in fact will make it back at some point. When they do its all the more special. No transfers, no magnets, just hometown kiddos playing their tales off. Look at Silsbee. they have been stellar and Ill say it got screwed out of a shot at the semi-finals by a bullshit non-call. I watched the Silsbee game and saw several times the refs screwed them over. Parden my language. The 2 pt. that was allowed when Cuerro was throwing off his knee really pissed me off. It wasn't as if it was something close. he was down way before the ball was thrown. I have no skin in the game as I am a PNG fan, but Silsbee was the best team and should have been playing in the next round. I hate it when refs determine a game. they should never be the deciding factor in an important game as this one was.. Great season Silsbee, Great season Lumberton.1 point -
I would say -11 or 12 or Furr and -6 or 7 to BTW. But just my 2 cents. AAW is much better at this sort of thing than I am.1 point

Silsbee played in the Smiley Tournament in 1994-97 I do know. Silsbee won the Smiley Tournament in 1994-96. The games weren't that close for s few. In the 31-1 season we beat Houston Jones in the Championship Game by 8. My senior year we went 27-8. We lost to Smiley by like 2 in the Championship game. Silsbee played Smiley in Silsbee a few times and it was always close games until the 4th and Silsbee would open it up. Silsbee would always host none district games vs Worthing, Smiley, and Kasmhere. In 2000, maybe the last time Silsbee missed the playoffs, a state ranked #2 Wheatley came to Silsbee and played Eddie Fobbs and Eldon Peterson. Silsbee beat them by like 5.1 point

HISD has problems, administrative problems, for years. I don't have the knowledge or expertise to say what exactly the root of the problem is. Alas there was a stereotype of some coaches that was around back when I spent a year and a half in HISD schools. It was the legend of the roll out the ball coach. Not at all schools, not all coaches, but some. This type coach was assigned to an inner city school, that had low morale, and unmotivated students & teachers. The roll out the ball coach would split his players into two teams and then roll out the ball and let them run, back and forth. Street ball style. Meanwhile the coach is marking days off on his calendar until he could retire. I think saw such a team once. Silsbee was playing in a tournament at the now shut down Smiley High School. Yates was in that tournament. This was the Silsbee team with Thad Holden, Arline, Herb Sapp Jr, etc. That JY team was loaded with talent. They ran, threw down some attention grabbing dunks then run out of gas and lose. This was a year or two before Coach Wise took over. The roll out the ball mentality is still around apparently, to some degree.1 point

Yes… the fact that he is black makes him unique. Most of his black peers are not similarly situated. Your son is unique. In a community that believes that “the only way out” is via a 🔥mixtape or becoming a professional athlete, and academics are largely ignored by kids and parents alike… they are both unique. But instead of celebrating the efforts and accomplishments made by the unique young people (and their parents who did a great job) you stand back and say “well, it was in spite of being ____…. The system failed everybody else.” When OJ Simpson was found not guilty in the 1990s, black people celebrated widely… “finally… a black man got a fair trial in America” was the thought. I was like “no, finally a black man had enough money to afford a top notch defense…. His race is irrelevant, but the fact that he is black makes his success unique.” Here’s the thing… you are walking, talking proof that success in America is possible for anybody. You’re not wrong… you probably are doing better than a lot of the people on this board. But you stand around and recite all of the mantras that absolve the black community of any responsibility for their own shortcomings instead of recognizing that what you’ve done isn’t hard, it’s common sense, good parenting, hard work and sound decisions. It has to be tough for you because it flies in the face of what you’ve been taught and I’m certain that your community as a whole doesn’t want to hear it… that’s something that I don’t experience.1 point -

There’s also a term called Lawfare - The term may refer to the use of legal systems and principles against an enemy, such as by damaging or delegitimizing them, wasting their time and money (e.g. SLAPP suits), or winning a public relations victory. Which is what has been done to him for the last 6 years using unlimited resources of the taxpayers money to constantly keep him in court. They’ve been trying to delegitimize him since he was elected President. It’s just ridiculous at this point. They’ve got nothing, it’s all about optics. It’s all about keeping power with these SICK PEOPLE.1 point -

Well I agree except 9-4A Jasper Silsbee H-F WOS And I say this cause Jasper has 19 starters back and Silsbee lost their QB. Don’t sleep on H-F there JV dominated every team they played. Not one team scored on them in District what I was told. Trying to confirm this. Jasper had 13 Sophomores and 1 freshman starting and Silsbee won on a botched catch. And helped Miller by double teaming. Jasper JV QB is only player on JV that will be moving up next year that will start. Very good arm but had no help on line. JMO Gonna be exciting year for sure.1 point -
