  1. Alright, I think that's enough. Rule 15 of the SETXSports rules prohibits the posting of unsubstantiated rumors. The original subject of this thread is completely unsubstantiated and, based on my own research, verifiably false. The speculation about the future of Nederland's runningback is also unsubstantiated. This thread will be locked. I look forward to what Jeff Joseph will do with the Port Neches-Groves Indians in 2024 and beyond.

  3. More of a combination. Community has just as much to do with it as anything; For instance, PNG's community spirit is what allowed them to spend thousands of dollars to hire Dodge to even go find a great coach. Without the right school board and community, that ain't happening in the first place... And I'm not a PNG guy, but I recognize one of the finest football communities in the nation when I see it.

  4. Field a team with a good coach but the kids are slow, all Freshmen, unintelligent and possibly mentally disadvantaged. How much winning will that coach do? Now I understand that’s a stupid example, but it’s just to serve as an exploded view. You gotta have a combination of coaching, kids & community which includes parents and administration. It takes all 3.

  5. I really think there is a lot of jealousy here. Are dudes mad they don't have college degrees, but coaches do? I'm sure a lot of them make more money than high school coaches, but I'm certain that many also do not. I'm just trying to figure it out.

  6. I can't even get him to explain to me why Bill Belichick is sub .500 without Tom Brady.. or hasn't won a playoff game since Brady left NE. Or why some is his elite coaches (by his definition) didn't win another state title after reaching elite status (according to his definition). So.. again. You're wasting your time. Might as well just let him believe that any coach could go to any team and win it all eventually. Wait.. I think 7 years is his timeframe.

  7. I don’t know that SOC makes it back next year. That region is stacked and they will be adding Anna (4A D1 State Champ) who is moving up. I like PNGs odds though. All that said it is very hard to win 5 straight against top talent each week, especially when you go into each game with a bullseye on your back like PNG will next year.

  8. Nederland has the same problem with politics that Beaumont does. Homeboy hires and consulting rather than winning games with the best players and coaches.

  15. Louisiana does a Power ranking and makes the playoff bracket based on that with no geographic considerations. Imagine all the bickering and arguing over seeding. Also that 1st round matchup between Port Arthur and El Paso would be fun…. 😀

  22. Most veteran PN-G fans will tell you the problem in the latter years of Ethridge's tenure was that he lost his coordinators and his best position coaches and couldn't find strong candidates to replace them.

  23. I have a bachelors and a pretty decent income. I also have the ability to sit and watch a game without telling the tv I know more about football... and I have the ability to not act like a know it all on a message board. Its a pretty good feeling to just sit and watch lol

  25. I disagree with this. You wanna pin it all on coaching but PN-G has been successful for a long time, not just under Joseph. Multiple state championships and great seasons to prove this. Always competitive and in every game just about. Again, the two schools do not compare when it comes to the culture. There have been some amazing coaches come through Nederland and they still have 0 state championships. It is not just the coaching that is the culprit. PN-G is on a whole different planet when it comes to support from the community. Teams don't identify themselves by their coaches. They define themselves based on their identity. Ask any state champion how they got there. I guarantee you, coaching is a small part of an identity this is NOT rooted in a coach. Great teams are lead by great young men that bought into a program with the support of their community. WO-S lost that community support based on a hire they didn't like. Now look at them. They are missing their identity because the community turned on the coach, school, and the players' performance on the field followed. Tell me I am wrong. The game is bigger than just a good coach.

  26. I am beyond happy not being a coach. I like my sanity and free time too much. Plus, I don't want to have to look for a new job every 7 years if I don't win a title.

  29. When I make those statements, they're about you bro... and the others who clearly do not. They're not about the people who actually understand it takes more than just a good coach to win. Culture & talent are the 2 most important factors. Coaches can develop culture, but it takes a village. Don't forget - high school football coaches are TEACHERS first. They are the ones spending every day with TEENAGERS and trying to get the best out of them. If you've never spent time as a TEACHER and a COACH, then you will NEVER really and fully understand the many nuances and dynamics of high school athletics.

  30. Let PNG look as bad as Nederland look and see what that culture looks likes. Good coaching brings about good culture. If Nederland had Joseph and PNG had Nederland’s coach we’d be talking about how bad the PNG culture is.

  38. The future looks bright at PNG, but I tell you we’re going to feel the loss of Nyugen and Shea Adams - Few RBs in PNG history have had the vision, timing, and balance of Nyugen. And there might may not have ever been a do-it-all player as clutch across so many games as Adams in PNG history. These two took us to two state championships and one trophy, and they did it by repeatedly showing up in huge moments when inches mattered. There’s a lot more we’ll miss - #28 (I forget his name, but he’s been huge on offense and defense) is one. Next man up. 2024 is going to be huge for PNG. But, we’ll definitely miss those guys.

  40. Not to hijack the thread, but on the subject of RBs...we will miss #33. Not the biggest and not the fastest, but he had patience, good vision, he was fearless, and his ball security was top notch. He was fast enough when it counted and he had the heart of a champion. For next year, #15 will be the bruiser, and some people at the LH semifinal game say there is a SOPH and a FR that will open some eyes this spring and next year. Supposedly, the SOPH runs north/south and is not afraid to put his head down and the FR is the speedster. I'm not a local, but was told our JV finished second to FBM and the FR team was either first or second? Any truth to the chatter at the LH game? Thanks...back to your thread about Chief Jeff Joseph leaving the Tribe. I think he wants to stay a few more years at PN-G. JJ, McDaniel, McCrary, Feller, et al. have two or three more years of big runs at PN-G if they want it. 4/5 of the OL returns, 2/3 of the DL returns, the QB is back, and a few other playmakers on both sides will be back. It's a good time to be a PN-G fan (says Captain Obvious). Go Indians. Peace.

    PNG Coaching Change?

setxathlete did a good job answering this for me. why not leave PNG and go make more money somewhere with more prestige and state of the art facilities? If he's confident in his ability to win anywhere (why wouldn't he be), it makes total sense to go take a high profile job somewhere, especially if he has any dreams of moving up into the college ranks. I hope that he stays for awhile, truly. but there's a lot of desperation in this thread from PNG fans (totally understandable) that is misrepresenting just how much better it would be for him to stay here versus taking over a big-name program somewhere else. And if he's going to do it, now's the time. PNG isn't going to sniff state every year, and his stock may never be higher than it is right now, especially if PNG comes back to earth the next couple of years.

    PNG Coaching Change?

You have to be joking. I know several single women who don't care for red headed men. Isn't this a little "over the top"? Next thing will be that he asks for a mil a year contract and folks will expect PN-G ISD to pay it. I think the guy stays for a while and builds something pretty special. But let's pump the brakes a bit.

  46. Did anyone else see SOC defenders all wear purple gloves so they can blend in with our jerseys so they could get away with holding. Especially #2 with the purple sleeves. They had light blue gloves last week against Emerson. But we're being called cheaters and have an asterisk because the refs gave us the title
