  1. I’m hoping to find one that’s 0-0 against PNG when the hire is made..

  2. Saban is now available, but he didn’t win a title until his 10th season. No sure if he fits the criteria.

  4. Someone already said it but this is all gamesmanship. Trying to gain an edge wherever you can. Defensive backs are coached to grab at the hips and to bump arms to slow WRs down, Wrs are taught to push off with elbows and hands on the hip, linemen are coached to grab block body to body to cover up holding. Every sport has it, and every good team does it whether they are wearing certain color gloves or not.

  5. Three appearances and one victory in 48 years, after taking massive steps forward in training, condition, and coaching, and only following years of getting donkey stomped by better teams , and we finally become one of those better teams and now it’s “waltzing”?

  6. True but that's a recipe for a revolving door. But they might get lucky.

  7. Someone posted his taso card on the internet including his home address, so someone had it. Maybe they didn’t notice until after the fact, but they do get the refs info cards. h. If the official has a child in school in one of the involved schools, or a child who graduated from one of the schools within the previous 2 years. This is the only one I would question. It says school not district. His kids are younger, so not in the “involved school.”

  8. Someone has to put in a public records request for it to be released. Schools generally won’t post it on their own.

  15. I believe he’s talking about the game being closer than some would have thought. Any win against a Todd Sutherland-coached team is a good win. And I think some people assumed when Kountze blew them out that the Bucs wouldn’t be very good. I think people may be under appreciating how good the Lions are.

  16. Always, it isn't a legit forum thread about an AD Opening without Peevey being thrown into the discussion.

  18. If you want to move this response to another thread then thats fine. I just feel the need to elaborate. Coach Buc built Aledo into what it is today. The culture, the system, expectations, ect, is all installed by Coach Buc. You said he won 1 state title in his first 15 years, which was '98 against Cuero. Well, something that was not mentioned is the steady progression of our playoff runs. This thing has been building from the ground up. The Years in red that are underlined prove this point. The other two coaches you mentioned are Coach Steve Wood and Coach Robby Jones (current coach). Coach Wood was in Aledo 11 years, most as the DC before taking over and Coach Jones has been in Aledo 18ish years before taking over. Both Coach Wood & Jones have taught that system for awhile. So they did not try to change things for the sake of it. They have their own styles but they do not let their ego get involved. Thats exactly what we need. People that respect what is working. You also mention a major talent edge. Against most teams, I would agree, against certain playoff team, maybe, against other state finalist, not really. Aledo grew up beating teams more talented than them. All those years where we got knocked out in the 3rd-5th rounds, show we didnt have a talent edge. Not a lot of kids going to play on Saturday. I'd say La Marque, Temple, Manvel, Brenham in '09, were all teams that had more talent than us on the field in the state games. Maybe even Fort Bend Marshall too in '18 & '19. But our coaching has been outstanding and we have won a lot of games that on paper we should lose. State Champions: '98 '09 '10 '11 '13 '14 '16 '18 '19 '20 '22 '23 State Finalist: '74 '17 State Semifinalist: '72 '97 '04 '06 '07 '15 State Quarterfinalist: '96 '99 '02 '03 '05 Regional Finalist: '67 '68 '70 '77 '00 '01 '21 Area Finalist: '08 '12 Bi-District Finalist: '62 '71 '73 '76 '81 '87 '88

  21. I agree - The head coach will be there three years max then move on to another school to get the AD title and $. But will be a good spot to get HC experience.

  22. That's the one I am leaning towards. Either that one or Central Heights at Hemphill. Both have teams I haven't seen yet this season. Leggett and Hemphill. The other games I have seen both teams.

  24. Stats from the game: Lamarcus Bottley: 37pts, 4 steals, 3 assists. He had 11 3’s in this game which is the 2nd all time record. - Jared Harris: 16pts, 8 assists, 8 rebounds, 5 steals. - Payton Jones: 14pts, 1 assist, 1 steal - Dre’lon Miller: 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals - Troy Rice: 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals Miller is apparently a bench player for now, too. Probably won't last more than a game or two.

  25. Ahhh. I think he was talking about Prieto at Crosby. I’m not sure if Nederland would be an upgrade over Lake Worth or not, I’m not familiar with that program.

  41. carthage had 6 losing seasons in the 30 years before Surratt arrived. He came into a school with a considerable amount of consistent talent and with a consistent history of making the playoffs, and his excellent coaching got them over the hump. Coach Buchanan did a great job at Aledo, but in his first 15 years only won one state title (in his sixth year, ironically). He then went 9 more without one, before the area growth brought more talent his way. Consequently, Aledo has won 11 of the last 15 championships despite having 3 different coaches over that time. Did they luck into 3 elite coaches in a decade? I kinda doubt it. Buchanan may have started things off, but they have a major talent edge there. That said, HJ has 3 winning seasons in 20 years, and that was one special group of kids. BC has two winning seasons in the last 10 years, ironically enough with the same coach and QB as a couple of those decent HJ teams. You're still comparing apples to oranges. Surratt could absolutely come to those schools and turn them around and make them winners, but he's not taking them to state or anywhere close to it unless a whole bunch of kids move in with him.

  43. I guess coming in as a new OC in JUNE and installing a whole new offense for AUGUST leads to the OC being a below average hire. Then lose 4-5 starters. That makes sense.

  44. That seems late. Not for nothing, but there’s a certain former 2x state champion coach from West Orange who Nederland might consider.

  45. There’s way more to it. The incident apparently happened at Texan Live amongst a sea of purple. I’ve heard what happened but this probably isn’t the platform to discuss it in detail. Regardless, he’s not with PNG anymore.

  47. Excellent! If you have not already, add this to the program just before you send them out and tell them: "Wherever you go, do not draw any conclusions until you understand all of the factors that the AD deals with" and "Always assume that the person who is in a position of leadership and runs an athletic program for a living, likely has insight that you do not have regarding the program".

  48. After the first 2 and 1/2 pages I thought this would end up a waste of a thread and also my time reading. However I'm glad I read through the entire thread and all post before clicking off. As a coach for the past 20 years both in SETX and now in the Greater Houston Area and being very familiar with the WOS Tradition/ Culture and also the last good playoff runs in Ozen's short history, I feel as though I have earned the right to reply to some of the comments in regards to Elite Coaching and also Talent / Culture and how the state of football in SETX has changed in the past few years. 1) IZZY you know I love ya like a son but the (50) 5-2 defense isn't trash, IT worked for years for the Mustangs because CT "Mastered" it along with his staff who many forget never really changed for years. So when you have coaches who have mastered a specific scheme and when I use the term mastered I mean they know how to make all of the adjustments in the scheme for what ever offenses will try to show em. What worked for the past coaching staff will not work for the present staff because its not them, simple as that!! You can't replace almost 30 years of CULTURE and as a community expect the same results. 2) Talent plays just as much a part as Coaching "ELITE" or NOT.. An ELITE Coach I wont say any names but I will say this, he hired ME and gave me my first HS Coaching Job.. "You Cant Win The Kentucky Derby With A Mule" to break it down for you, You Cant Win A UIL STATE Championship Without Talent. 3) Talent can make an average Coach look alot better but who cares, that average coach still has to put that TALENT into position to win, and also manage all of the talent on and off the field, and most importantly LEAD all that TALENT. 4) What it all comes down to is allowing Coaches to set the culture for their programs, communities providing support financially and proudly supporting that team all year long. Championships aren't won in the FALL, they are won in the offseason and summer conditioning.
