  1. We love to bitch and moan about coaches/coaching but aren’t so quick to give credit where it’s due. Lamar has improved every single year under Brooks’ tenure. I don’t know how much more you can ask for, especially when the one team finishing ahead of you is paying to get players who have played, could play for some lower power 4/5 schools. Marco Born was pretty much a train wreck as AD at Lamar but I think we can safely say he got this one right. Not only has Alvin Brooks done a good job building this program, he’s a fine man who is 100% loyal to the University. Let’s give credit where it’s due.

  2. A kid was ejected from a football game and was suspended for the following week. The President, head coach, and kids dad decided screw the rules and they are going to put the kid in a different jersey number and sneak him into the game next week… Turning kids away and hand selecting teams, swapping jerseys so LO kids can run the ball… all this coming from a close friend from LCM then called a Lumberton coach that’s been around and backed it all up.

  3. @tvc184 This is some of the discussion I posted about a year ago. I will admit, there may have been changes to the proposed legislation since I made these statements. Also, the comments jump around a bit, because it is a combination of previous posts.: "I am a pretty conservative guy, but I am against school vouchers. Who pays for the public schools (several of which were just built in my town of Lumberton)? I have yet to hear a comprehensive argument that pushes me to the school voucher system, and I've read quite a few. And I really have issues with taxpayer money being given to private "for profit" schools. With all the schools that have an open campus nowadays, there are other options for a quality education other than school vouchers. There's not usually a school bus to service private schools at this point, so the child already has to get picked up / dropped off. Folks do it all the time. Regardless, there are plenty of reasons against it. A voucher program that allows any Texas student to use public money (I like to think of it as "my (our) money") to offset the cost of private-school tuition would divert dollars from public schools, tightening already tight public-school budgets, without a proportionate reduction in public school costs - possibly to the point of raising taxes to keep them afloat. I also think it will incentivize the private schools to raise price of tuition (to put in their own back pockets) because they are getting subsidized by, that's right, my (our) money. I'm not saying school vouchers don't have some merit. Just not enough in my opinion. The average annual tuition for a private-school lands between $11,000 and $14,000. The proposed voucher would give a kid approx. $8,000 dollars toward that tuition (2024 numbers). The family still has to come up with the balance. Let's say you have a kid that goes to a private. Dad's a lawyer, banker, businessman, etc. and pays the full tuition to send his kid to the private school. With the voucher system in place, the dad will now get $8,000 towards the kid's tuition. A net savings of let's say $3,000 on the low side. No problem, right? Meanwhile, another family who is not so fortunate who sends their kid to public school has the same opportunity to send their child to private school and pay the $3,000 difference. Awesome, right? Only problem is they can't afford it, so that kid stays in public school that is now getting less funding. Net sum, the better off family gets a break on sending their kid to a private school for a helluva lot less, and the lesser off family is stuck in the same place they were to begin with. All to pay a privatized for-profit institution and have the quality of the public-school fall even further behind. That struggling single mom still won’t be able to send her kids anywhere. A voucher won’t cover rides to school (wherever that may be), uniforms, the entirety of tuition, they don’t have to have free lunch programs, etc., etc. A voucher won’t help a mom in a rough place get her genius into a private school that doesn’t exist in that area. But it will help that guy in River Oaks with the tuition bill on his three kids that he’s already paying. If the schools lose a percentage of their students to private schools, they’re going to have their funding cut, right? But much of their expenses won’t go down. The only way for this to work is if we raise local taxes to subsidize them for the funds that the state is redirecting to the voucher program… that’s what no one wants to explain. As an example, Lumberton is not failing to provide a proper education. Neither are the majority of the schools in our area where I live. This is a political move with the ruse of being used to keep liberal indoctrination away from our kids. While I agree with keeping our kids from being led down the happy blue path, I don't agree with the way they are trying to do it. Texas Conservatives (of which I am) are simply doing this to garner support from the right. If you think they really give two craps about your kids, my kids, any kids, then remember we are talking about politicians. We are being given a poor solution which will raise taxes in the end and could possibly be harmful to a lot of middle-class families on down to the lower class. There can be other ways to do it than school vouchers. From a guy that doesn't like paying any more taxes than I have to, I am definitely against it. I am also against fixing one problem by causing many more problems."

  4. Saw this explanation on another site and wanted to post it. Some of it echos @SmashMouth's excellent post yesterday. Cost to send a student to a private school: $10,000 Voucher given: $10,000 New cost to send a student to Private school: $15,000 All these poor inner-city kids stuck at under-performing public schools STILL won't be able to afford to go to a private school because the price was upped to keep them out. Those private schools don't want those high-risk kids coming in dragging down their scores. But all those schools just got a 5K raise per student without changing their demographics one iota. All these poor rural kids stuck at under-performing schools STILL won't be able to attend a private school not only because they can't afford it....but also because the closest one is 100 miles away. But those private schools also got a 5K raise per student without taking in any rural students. But now tax dollars are going to be given to parents that could already afford to send their kids to private school even without the vouchers. Welfare for the rich. Rewards for an already wealthy private school lobby. Things go unchanged at the underperforming schools.....but with less money to do it.

  5. In my opinion Lamar is fortunate to have Brooks. lamar being his Alma mater is the”fortunate “ part because I believe he could ve went elsewhere that had a better program. he inherited a mess when it came to players, their attitudes and mental make up.

  6. This is the nature of the beast in TXHSFB these days. Look at all the successful, state championship level programs of the past 15 years. Everyone has hit paydirt with transfers consistently to maintain their ability to stay on top. To me it signals that BH is willing to make the commitment necessary to compete at the highest levels, especially with the pending move to 6A. This is probably just the beginning and will increase in the years to come. It will be interesting to see.

  10. A lot of these scores just highlight the watered down impact of two divisions. Liberty Hill getting smoked by 30 in the state finals and Kountze winning by almost 40 is insane. Hey but more people got a trophy and get to claim they went to "state"

Well, my 401k has officially fallen below what it was worth back when Biden/Harris were running things. At least it took a couple years for him to wreck the economy last time…. He’s less than two months in and already crapping the bed.

  16. USA and its allies, America most of Europe and Japan is enough combined strength to keep Russia and China at bay. They can only succeed if we’re not aligned. So make it fair make other nations spend more but to concede to communism control has to be a no go. Ukraine can only fall if NATO is weakened. If NATO is weakened Russia and China will flex and see what they can get. What’s the possible outcome of Ukraine falling to Russia. A. Nothing and we’re living in peace B. China sees the blue print and go after Taiwan and every thing else in China sea. C. One European nation declares war sending US to WW3 Which one is most not likely to happen.

  18. Beyond impractical. How many cities the size of Beaumont in Texas only have one high school? In population, but especially in area. It wouldn’t make sense to be bussing kids 30+ minutes (without even beginning to factor in stops) one way just to have better sports teams. Not mention having to build a new school, replace the staff that wouldn’t travel the extra distance, etc.

  20. Just my opinion. BH lost by 6 at United, but later in season lost to BH by 15 and it was worse then that. United will be strong in a couple years, but I think they would’ve gotten beat in playoffs by PAM, BH, or FBM before getting to regional final if there wasn’t a split division is what I’m saying.

  31. He doesn’t have to shop his son. His son is a known quantity. If a program wants him with no worries about eligibility, all they’ve got to do is hire Daddy for the season. It’s greasy, for sure, but doesn’t violate the letter of the law. It’s a slippery slope from high on The Hill down into the Dirty Bay and it looks to me like BH are well on their way! Really living up to their “New Baytown” nickname!

  32. I'll never claim that every job lost should be cut, or that mistakes aren't made in haste. But you're really doing the whole democratic propaganda thing? Instead of focusing on whether or not the position is needed the left insists on bombarding us with sad sob stories about people laid off. in 2024 there were 20.3 MILLION employees laid off or discharged in the US. So can we quit pretending the left cares about laid off employees now? They're only upset that they're losing influence and programs to pour money into.

Just so we’re clear — you’re saying you don’t care that millions of illegals invaded our country and were afforded food, debit cards, and shelter while leaving homeless veterans lying in the street? Really dude? Now you are somehow infuriated that 1400 people got caught in a layoff which happened to include a couple vets? How fake can your outrage be? What a putz.
