We love to bitch and moan about coaches/coaching but aren’t so quick to give credit where it’s due. Lamar has improved every single year under Brooks’ tenure. I don’t know how much more you can ask for, especially when the one team finishing ahead of you is paying to get players who have played, could play for some lower power 4/5 schools. Marco Born was pretty much a train wreck as AD at Lamar but I think we can safely say he got this one right. Not only has Alvin Brooks done a good job building this program, he’s a fine man who is 100% loyal to the University. Let’s give credit where it’s due.6 points

Robertson did very well. But that really has nothing to do with Daspit's abilities to coach. IMO, last year's style of play and coaching is different than how this year was played and coached. Different styles and philosophies. I just don't see any reason to discredit one to enhance the other. Completely unnecessary and kind of irrelevant to this game thread. I have to agree, BC plays Yates last year, it's likely a 20 point win for Yates and not a 1 point win.6 points -

School Choice/Vouchers etc.
bullets13 and 4 others reacted to AggiesAreWe for a topic
If one thinks that their child is not getting the proper education at a school district, then you currently have that CHOICE to move your child to another school district. Don't need a voucher for that. People have the CHOICE to enroll their kids in a private school. State dollars should not go to a private school. Folks pushing this bill are campaigning that it's about school choice, which is not the case. You have a choice now.5 points -

I’m still wondering how Robertson built this team with only 3 returning Varsity players. Mungy never stepped on the court or put a jersey on last year so how could that count? BC doesn’t even play the same game as when he was there. There's actually chemistry now in the program. Not putting down Robertson, but this is not the same team by a long shot! This team and last year’s team is night and day different. The bitterness and jealousy of his family to get on here and not give Daspit credit for this season is astounding. I mean, why even comment at all? Daspit didn’t cause Robertson to lose his job! Last year’s team would have lost by 60 to the Yates team that BC played last night! This game is posted on YouTube. Just search for Bridge City Cardinals vs. Jack Yates Lions. It’s hard to listen to with all of the noise makers banging though.5 points

Eh, depends on your grasp of the word “most.” You don’t play with Jack Yates with 3 or 4 guys and not get your doors blown off. Fact is, he did a very, very good job in his first year as a head coach. Going to be a really good one for years to come and I couldn’t be less surprised.5 points

No. Launching American communications and military satellites is a national security and communications issue. If NASA can lauch dozens of satellites each week at a cheaper cost than Space X, they need to do so. If NASA could keep up cheaper, why did Biden give billions of dollars to Space X? It is not like sending $2,500,000 to Viet Nam for electric cars, $20,000,000 for Sesame Street in Iraq or $2,000,000 for sex charges in Guatemala.4 points -

The small/big split should've been done so as districts. Honestly, if they're dead set on doing it that way, they should have created the football districts the way they currently do... and then just said that those were the districts for every sport. Doing it this way, there are examples where the "small" schools that made the playoffs in one district are bigger than the "big" schools that made it in others. What a joke. Small school champions and big school school champions? Ok.. fine.. just make the football districts the districts for every sport.3 points -

School Choice/Vouchers etc.
bullets13 and 2 others reacted to SmashMouth for a topic
@tvc184 This is some of the discussion I posted about a year ago. I will admit, there may have been changes to the proposed legislation since I made these statements. Also, the comments jump around a bit, because it is a combination of previous posts.: "I am a pretty conservative guy, but I am against school vouchers. Who pays for the public schools (several of which were just built in my town of Lumberton)? I have yet to hear a comprehensive argument that pushes me to the school voucher system, and I've read quite a few. And I really have issues with taxpayer money being given to private "for profit" schools. With all the schools that have an open campus nowadays, there are other options for a quality education other than school vouchers. There's not usually a school bus to service private schools at this point, so the child already has to get picked up / dropped off. Folks do it all the time. Regardless, there are plenty of reasons against it. A voucher program that allows any Texas student to use public money (I like to think of it as "my (our) money") to offset the cost of private-school tuition would divert dollars from public schools, tightening already tight public-school budgets, without a proportionate reduction in public school costs - possibly to the point of raising taxes to keep them afloat. I also think it will incentivize the private schools to raise price of tuition (to put in their own back pockets) because they are getting subsidized by, that's right, my (our) money. I'm not saying school vouchers don't have some merit. Just not enough in my opinion. The average annual tuition for a private-school lands between $11,000 and $14,000. The proposed voucher would give a kid approx. $8,000 dollars toward that tuition (2024 numbers). The family still has to come up with the balance. Let's say you have a kid that goes to a private. Dad's a lawyer, banker, businessman, etc. and pays the full tuition to send his kid to the private school. With the voucher system in place, the dad will now get $8,000 towards the kid's tuition. A net savings of let's say $3,000 on the low side. No problem, right? Meanwhile, another family who is not so fortunate who sends their kid to public school has the same opportunity to send their child to private school and pay the $3,000 difference. Awesome, right? Only problem is they can't afford it, so that kid stays in public school that is now getting less funding. Net sum, the better off family gets a break on sending their kid to a private school for a helluva lot less, and the lesser off family is stuck in the same place they were to begin with. All to pay a privatized for-profit institution and have the quality of the public-school fall even further behind. That struggling single mom still won’t be able to send her kids anywhere. A voucher won’t cover rides to school (wherever that may be), uniforms, the entirety of tuition, they don’t have to have free lunch programs, etc., etc. A voucher won’t help a mom in a rough place get her genius into a private school that doesn’t exist in that area. But it will help that guy in River Oaks with the tuition bill on his three kids that he’s already paying. If the schools lose a percentage of their students to private schools, they’re going to have their funding cut, right? But much of their expenses won’t go down. The only way for this to work is if we raise local taxes to subsidize them for the funds that the state is redirecting to the voucher program… that’s what no one wants to explain. As an example, Lumberton is not failing to provide a proper education. Neither are the majority of the schools in our area where I live. This is a political move with the ruse of being used to keep liberal indoctrination away from our kids. While I agree with keeping our kids from being led down the happy blue path, I don't agree with the way they are trying to do it. Texas Conservatives (of which I am) are simply doing this to garner support from the right. If you think they really give two craps about your kids, my kids, any kids, then remember we are talking about politicians. We are being given a poor solution which will raise taxes in the end and could possibly be harmful to a lot of middle-class families on down to the lower class. There can be other ways to do it than school vouchers. From a guy that doesn't like paying any more taxes than I have to, I am definitely against it. I am also against fixing one problem by causing many more problems."3 points -

After 7th grade in Lumberton my kid told me he wanted to go to Evadale. To this day he has never really said why other than he initially said the kids are jerks in Lumberton and they bully too much. He assured me he was not being bullied, and being a starting football player, I didn't doubt him. I always taught him to protect himself regardless of school policy. Evadale was the best decision he could have made, and I reluctantly agreed because it was only a 15 minute drive. Small school, he made varsity his 9th grade year(that small of a school), started from 10th till gradation. They had small classes and the teachers cared. A-B student.....never got in trouble - watched like a hawk lol My point is I believe Aggies is 100% correct - the surrounding of your kids in schools and influences is probably more detrimental to your child than the quality of teacher. I'm not knocking teachers, I'm just saying typically peer pressure will have more influence than the best teacher.3 points -

One thing I do like about the hire is Ron Jackson finally hired some youth! Because before this hire it seemed as if he had thing for hiring old coaches lol But Dre is a good dude & should bring a lot of excitement into the program, however he’s already been told by Ron Jackson that he can’t get rid of the entire staff apparently because the current coaches have family, kids & homes in the Beaumont. He can only bring in coordinators, which makes zero sense. He’s definitely fighting an uphill battle because the admin is clueless as to what it takes to have a success athletics/football program. Also he’s going to be hard pressed to find good quality coaches to come from Austin, SA, Houston etc to come take pay cuts in Beaumont.3 points -
That may actually be correct. But no doubt he was paid a small fortune before “the money ran out.” By that, I don’t mean I don’t believe you or your memory but more I don’t doubt what DeGuerin is telling the court about being “pro bono” now. But I would love to be “pro bono” after collecting fees that buy homes on Thomas Road. Whether the money ran out is obviously a whole ‘nother story and I am more than skeptical about that.3 points

When I said my personal feeling does not matter, it was about not agreeing with H-D getting the ban. UIL saw fit to ban them (and I believe there is merit, like I said I can't argue much about that) but according to all parties involved that spoke with me, UIL did not ban Burkeville. Those are the facts. Your comparison is not a good one. UIL banned Faith Family for recruiting violations before the season started. There was no season to qualify them for playoffs. Ban was before the first game was played. Burkeville situation is much different. They had already eliminated themselves from playoffs based on their district record prior to the H-D game. Now, had the UIL banned Burkeville for next years playoffs based off this incident, then I could understand your point. My "evidence" is my communications with coaches, admins and committee representatives. I trust what they told me on the rulings. When all three sides basically tell me the same thing, got to think it's the truth. UIL doesn't ban for the sake of being fair. All their punishments have repercussions. That's how their policy boards and executive committees work. They are not going to ban a team from playoffs if the team was already ineligible. They issue other types of punishments. Which was the case here. You not believing me or saying I have to provide proof really does not concern me. I have no reason to lie about any of this nor would I. I take great pride in my credibility here and with the local coaches. They have trust in me and I have trust in them. I'm sorry that you don't.3 points -
