Anyone know if Nederland has sold out the visitors' side yet?

6-1 with two or three big upset wins to their credit and tied for a district title with the defending state champs in the first season of a new head coach? Yes, I would. -

If Nederland holds on, they deserve to be state-ranked next week. -

West Fork's coach is a PN-G grad, if I'm not mistaken.

I take it back.

If memory serves, PN-G returned 15 of last year’s 22 starters. As @Rez pointed out, we have some things to fix coming out of the Klein Oak game. Provided we fix those things, PN-G 17. If we don’t, PN-G by 7. I suspect United is a better team than in years past, and is also better than Klein Oak.

Port Neches-Groves (39) @ Klein Oak (17) - FINAL

Let’s start with the good. Tyson Henry reminded me of Isaiah Nguyen in how he runs. With time for Henry to develop, I think he and Chatagnier will strike a dynamic similar to the one Chatagnier shared with Nguyen. We saw how that worked out last year. Bailey and his receivers corps both looked good once the offense found its rhythm. Same goes for the OL. The defense forced six turnovers, only giving up ten points to a fairly talented (if poorly coached) 6A team with an OU commit and as much speed as we’ll see all season. Perhaps most importantly, the stellar in-game adjustments we’ve become accustomed to from this coaching staff were on full display; I took particular notice of how the passing game exploited the seams that were opened when Klein Oak stacked the box early to stifle Chatagnier. McDaniel’s still the best high school DC in America, in my book. In the end, we walked away with a three possession win in enemy territory. It was a strong first outing for the 2024 Indians. Now let’s talk about the bad. Two drive-killing false starts and two fumbles, including one scoop-n-score, within spitting distance of the end zone during the first ~15 minutes of regulation. A bobbled snap on a PAT attempt that, thankfully, worked out for an unintentional two pointer. Some bad snaps on punting attempts that, thankfully, didn’t cost us anything. It’s hard to complain about a 22 point victory over a school with a thousand more kids to build a team from. All in all, this was a good win for the Indians. Change two or three key moments in the game, however, and this easily could’ve been the Indians’ third consecutive season opener loss. The main thing is that we know what we need to work on. The offense needs to work out some stiffness. Defense has a minor size issue in the backfield and needs to do a little work on tackling. Special teams needs the most work of all. I trust Joseph & Co. to iron out those kinks. We’ll have another good season this year. Will it be another history-making season? Only time will tell. 😎 -
NDN Press will stream all games this year unless indicated otherwise.

Welcome to the right side of the tracks.

Policies like that have a way of changing.

If all goes well, I suspect PN-G will play a playoff game or two at Bowers, anyway.

If I’m not mistaken, this is the same system Permian uses. Thought that was much more convenient when I went to see a game in Ratliff last year. Glad to see the upgrade.

It’s not a land issue, it’s a demographic issue. The population in PN-GISD is getting younger. Old folks are dying off, and their homes are being bought by young families moving in with increasing frequency. Factor in that PN-GISD is more attractive than some of its neighbors right now thanks to the newer schools, the quality of education and the recent extracurricular success, and you have an easy explanation for the ~20% enrollment growth that’s occurred over the last ten years while the neighboring Jefferson County districts have all either flat-lined or shrunk. You also have an explanation for Groves posting the highest growth rate in the county and the third highest in the MSA on the 2020 census. We’re a lot closer to 5ADI numbers than people realize.

5ADII PN-G beat 6A Beaumont United 49-0 and 45-14 in 2022 and 2023. 4ADII WO-S played the eventual 5ADII state champion Indians to overtime in 2023. If it all boils down to just attendance numbers, explain those facts to me. -

To your point, it’s worth noting that the 50-15 loss was PN-G’s first game under a new coach. I think most PN-G fans would agree that the 2022 Indians didn’t fully settle into Joseph’s system until late in the regular season. -

That’s a recent phenomenon. PN-G and Nederland were always within a hundred students of each other until PN-G’s numbers started to jump around 2018. In fact, for many years leading up to that, PN-G was slightly smaller than Nederland. -

Jeff Joseph was special teams coordinator at Southlake Carroll when PN-G hired him. Everyone at PN-G, including Joseph himself, characterized the hiring as “taking a chance.” Look how that worked out. -
State Champion and Finalist from the area.

Would be interested in seeing the regional champions in the small school divisions from the days before state championships were played in the lower classifications added to this list. The original Port Neches Indians won regional championships in 1946 and ‘47, when that was the highest they could go. Finished one of those two seasons undefeated, as I recall. -
Agreed. I’m hoping Joseph’s success with the Indians signals to the state’s top coaching talent that Southeast Texas has the right mix of talent, resources and community support to be successful. Scott Rich’s arrival in Nederland suggests that might be happening.

I stand corrected. (As does my calendar.)

I really respect Coach Joseph’s predistrict selections, even if I would like to see Memorial on the schedule. We will be prepared for whatever we face the rest of the season. I’ve already circled December 13 on my calendar. Scalp ‘em, Indians.

I’m gonna preach this one more time and then I’ll get off my soap box. The foundation of a successful high school or collegiate football program is a top notch strength and conditioning regimen. These Katy guys seem to understand that really well.
