Does Lumberton need a coaching change?
PN-G bamatex replied to beaumontballer44's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
The problem isn't coaching - one coaching change is what made Lumberton a power in 2007 and 2008. The problem is the level of talent. The way that district is growing, that problem will correct itself given time. -

I got the news about the PN-G freshmen comeback win in class, so I couldn't post. This was the biggest test they've seen so far and they not only hung in there and pulled out the win, but did so without a few of the starters they've had this season. Scalp 'em. -
22-13 Ozen Freshman Over PN-G Freshman Purple, 4:32 3rd PN-G Freshman White apparently doesn't have a game today.
History repeats itself...and what goes around comes around..well enough of that! lol
There's a lot of truth to that statement.... When have all of PN-G's state championship appearances happened? The '50s, '70s, and '90s. During each of those decades, there was always one school that seemed to stand in the way of perfect seasons. In the '50s and '70s, it was TJ or Lincoln depending on the specific season (although ironically, there was a year in there somewhere where we needed TJ and Lincoln to tie in the last district game to go to the playoffs, and that's exactly what happened). In the '90s, it was West Orange-Stark. Brandon Faircloth's undefeated 2009 season and the playoff run that followed were reminiscent of Danny Malone's first season as head coach in 1989, when the Indians went 9-1 (losing to WO-S in the last district game that season, 20-25) and made a state quarter-final appearance in what was the only PN-G playoff appearance of the 1980s. Ironically, head coaches that went on to be successful elsewhere didn't coach at PN-G during the highly successful odd numbered decades, they coached at PN-G only during even numbered decades. Danny Malone is now one of Nebraska's most successful head coaches at Geneva's Fillmore Central HS, and has given the University of Nerbraska Cornhuskers many of their star players. Bum Phillips coached for PN-G in the '60s. But Lew Ford and Gene McCollum, who led us to three consecutive state championship appearances in the mid '50s, took administrative positions within the district. Doug Ethridge, who led the Indians to four straight district championships, a state title, another state final appearance that set the national record for fan attendance that still stands today, a state semi-final appearance and a #3 national ranking in 1975, left the Indians in 1983 and had a mostly quiet career to my knowledge after that. And then there's Matt Burnett, who, with an excellent OC and QB pair working with him, led the Indians through the highly successful 1999 season, which ended with a 14-2 record and a heartbreaking loss to Stephenville in the state championship at the Astrodome in front of 39,000 fans, and he now has an administrative position within the district. It seems that the PN-G football program is cyclical. Odd numbered decades see astounding success at some point. We're kicking off one of those decades now, and interestingly enough, our lower grades seem to be performing very well right now.... Now excuse me while I go find some wood to knock on.
... and there are several 9-1 PN-G near misses thanks to Lincoln, TJ and WO-S.

For PN-G, any discussion like this has to include the Luncefords, and not just for football. -
I know I am very late in posting this and it may never be received and read for whom it is intended but better late than never! This is going out to proudndn; Last night two high school football teams played a competitive game called football. The Vidor Pirates were host to the PNG Indians on what was Vidor's Homecoming. The home side was at greater than capacity seating and there was several hundred more standing along the fence to watch the game. There was at all times 11 players on both teams playing offensively and defensively, both of these teams played with pride, talent and heart. All of these boys should take pride in their efforts, their talents shone through with their love of the game. As with most game's, it ended with one team coming out on top, which in last nights game Vidor got the win. During half time the bands from both schools performed for our entertainment, again with pride, talent and heart. The performance from both bands was awesome, two different styles, two different routines. The drill teams and twirlers were awesome as well. Neither bands were any better than the other last night. Last weekend the UIL marching band contest was held with Vidor receiving straight ones. I'm not sure what rating the PNG band received but if the performed then as they did last night I could only imagine they received straight ones as well. You see proud, the competition was played out with school aged students, I don't know your age, just guessing since you was seated in the stands you are above the said age, you might can learn something from them. Stop trash talking and let the score at the end speak. You can also learn from the other PNG fans on this forum of how a truly Proud Indian fan should represent his team. Jealousy is a great form of flattery. Also, just so you know, the football team wasn't the only winners last night, the VHS band was also the winner's of the Band of the Week. One last point, everyone who was able to attend the game, leave he game and drive home safely was the biggest winner of all.
Two points. First, I agree with almost everything said here. Second, Band of the Week this week was between Nederland and Ozen, not Vidor and PN-G. Also, both PN-G and Vidor earned straight ones last week, as well as Lumberton and Nederland from 20-4A.

They are killing everybody right now. I know we beat Vidor, but you'd think that they would start to get a little more recognition for what they are doing.
Why would they be ranked? Example: We have the same record they do, plus we have a history of being ranked, and were not. Also, Summer Creek and Georgetown are both undefeated and have dominated their opponents, but they arn't ranked either. That's just how it is. If they have a problem with it, just continue winning it will sort itself out. This isn't the BCS.
Brenham, Georgetown and Summer Creek are all ranked in the DCTF top 25. Although, for the record, I think SC should be ranked higher than they are, and that's one of the points I was making in my previous post.
That's a wishy washy poll. I'm talking about the one most people, papers & radios go by. The AP top ten.
I don't think Vidor and Brenham are deserving of a top ten ranking, but what's to say the teams we're talking about wouldn't be ranked if the AP did a full top 25? I tend to favor the DCTF poll just because it does list a full 25 teams, although I agree with the AP top 10 over the DCTF top 10 more often than not. I think Vidor should be in the DCTF top 25 at the very least.
Summer Creek is undefeated and has beaten everyone by a margin of 40 points (avg 52 to 12) ouch. I would suspect they would be higher ranked than Vidor at this point, but both teams suffer from the same issue...They havent really beaten any good teams (SC beat Crosby which is probably there best win).
I'm going to agree with that to a certain extent. I think reputation also plays a part in those polls. Schools that have succeeded consistently over the years are expected to again and benefit from that in the polling. Schools that haven't (such as a new schools like SC or schools with little history like Vidor) just have to earn it the hard way. It's unfortunate, but it's the truth.

Facts are facts...Burnett teams went to the playoffs once every four seasons...BF teams have gone three outta four. I'll take the 3 outta 4 anyday.
Burnett also took PNG to the State Championship....how long has it been before & after?
If you knew anything about PNG in 1999 you would know that had more to do with the Longs than Burnett. Take those two seasons outta Burnetts record book at PNG and its sub .500! (Fact)
Gotta be honest here Badndn, Faircloth stepped into a perfect storm on the Reservation coming in. The talent he had was just coming in its own. That talent pool ended last year where we were one and done and I believe with that team last year we should have been at least three deep. I knew this team did not have the talent pool as well as most people in PNG, so I was not expecting much. But, I am sorry our defense has been bad for the last 4 years. I contribute it to poor training of the basics. It is evident on the field. The kids are talented enough to get to a kid in the back field they should wrap up and bring him down or hold on at least and get help. That has not happened. It is what it is. The Nederland game last week gave me hope because I saw that kind of tackling, but maybe it was just Midcounty madness. I am not pushing Burnett or have I ever mentioned him. I am talking about the current set of coaches. Fundementals are not being worked on as I see it.
Faircloth did step in to a surplus of talent... and Burnett went 3-6 with most of that talent the year before.

The only way you're only going to hear Cherokee twice is if you leave before the game starts. We hear it more than that on the radio.
Angleton has already lost 1 or 2 games they shouldn't have lost, I believe. If we play Angleton again we will beat them. They were the better team when we played them in non-district, but if we match up with them again in the playoffs, we'll blow 'em out.
Nederland's a good team, but the best in all of 4A? When there are teams like Pearland Dawson, Aledo and Tyler John Tyler out there? I think Nederland's a good third round pick and maybe a fourth round team, and there's potential for a state championship run, but the odds are against them. There's a reason they play the games and I'll be rooting for the Bulldogs come playoff time, but I don't think it's realistically a state year.
-
Nederland has a very good shot to make it to state. We have the best defense in the state, and probably the biggest front 4 in all the state of Texas. Our front four makes our linebackers and secondary better. We have a quarterback who is a three year starter so he's been there before, and we have a very good running game. Who's to say Nederland doesnt have a very good chance of making it to state? I think we our the best team in the state in class 4A.
So what does that make Angleton? ;D
