Neat Little Peak Inside the Astrodome....
PN-G bamatex replied to PN-G bamatex's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
With all the money in the Houston area, I think they should renovate it and use it as a playoff venue for baseball and football. Heck, they might be able to add a basketball capability as well. They'd have high schools from all over Southeast and Central Texas coming to play in it. That would be the place to play, plus it leave's Reliant for the college and professional teams. -
Looking ahead...consolidating districts
PN-G bamatex replied to a topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Do you ever see a day on the horizon where Port Neches Groves and Nederland school districts consolidate to form one School District with one High School?
No. I'll admit, if the two districts were forced to consolidate with another district, they'd pick each other over any other school. But even if the districts consolidated into PN-G-N or N-PN-G or PG(N^2) or MJCCISD or whatever, there wouldn't be that many changes. There would still be a Port Neches-Groves High School and a Nederland High School, Port Neches and Groves kids would still go to PN-G and Nederland kids would still go to Nederland, there would still be Bulldogs and Indians, there would still be an Indian Stadium and a Bulldog Stadium, the train tracks would still exist, and most importantly, Mid-County Madness would continue as it always has. The most that might happen is some consolidation of elementary and middle schools, but only on their respective sides of the tracks. But there's no reason to even think about that, because it'll only happen forty years down the road over several thousand dead bodies. There would be a massive crowd of people in purple t-shirts (and probably a band playing Cherokee) on the capitol building's lawn before that happened. I do have one question, though. If that happened, would the consolidated district still have to make these stupid equity transfers? If so, would it still be $14 Million a year? They take it from us because so much of our tax base is industrial, but if we consolidated with Nederland, that would be a much smaller portion of the district's taxable assets. -
Texas stadium served as home field for two Dallas area high schools in 1979.....Plano and Highland Park. I'm sure PNG traveled well as usual, but the majority of that crowd didn't have to travel much at all. Texas stadium was an engineering failure, but so was the leaning tower of Pisa.
I don't know about the majority. I've heard two versions of this story. One is a couple of eyewitness accounts that say both sides had about 25,000 and the other was a bunch of eyewitness accounts and an old news article scanned in somewhere that said PN-G brought about 30,000-32,000 fans and Plano brought 18,000-20,000. I wasn't there, so I don't know for sure, but I do know as fact that there were 34,000 fans on the PN-G side of the Astrodome and 25,000 on our side of Kyle Field in 1999, and that there was a fleet of charter busses en route to Dallas in 1977, so I've always felt the latter was closer to the truth (not that I'm biased or anything :D). Unfortunately, I've never found a color photo of the crowd or any photo of the entire stadium from that game so as far as I know, there's no objective way to tell for sure. -
SE TEXAS TEAMS VS NORTH & WEST TEXAS TEAMS
PN-G bamatex replied to Kville_Kats's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
In 4A, I think a lot of it has to do with the Houston-area teams we face in the third round. LaMarque, Angleton and Manvel have all proven the strength of their programs and Dawson and Friendswood are both, what, less than a fifty students from 5A status? Having Brenham in Region III doesn't help. As much as I hate to say it, hurricanes may have something to do with it as well. A lot of people left the area in '05 and again in '08. The kids who are in high school now were in middle and elementary school back then. In the ten years prior to Rita, how many SETX teams made it to state championships? PN-G went in '99, WO-S went in '00 and Nederland fell to Bay City (7-6, maybe?) a round short of the big game in either '00 or '01. And it's not just football. PN-G sent teams to the state tournament in baseball in '00 and '05, and we fielded softball teams at the state tournament in '01 and '04. I know WO-S sent the track team to the state tournament several times in the '00-'05 range (although I think they've been back once or twice since). Heck, it's not even just sports. How many times did PN-G and LC-M send their bands to the state marching competitions between '95 and '05? How many times have they been back since? Our schools used to be prominent in a lot of things. In many ways, they still are. They just aren't as strong as they used to be. -

BTW, it's niether here nor there as they say, but the "tunnel" that you guys run out of at the start of each half (don't know the technical name for it) is one of the coolest, & most intimidating I have seen all year! Looks eeeeevil. ;D GOOD LUCK NEXT YEAR PIRATES!!!!
It's pretty cool, huh? We love it!! When the smoke starts and the boys run out of it and in to the smoke it is AWESOME!! My kids LOVE it!! I work with somebody from PNG and they said the same thing, it looks evil and creepy!
Vidor's tunnel is pretty cool. The Vidor crowd also impressed me at this game. I wish PN-G's crowd would get that into the game.

Your schools Best Teams that Underachieved
PN-G bamatex replied to D3zii's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
The best team that underachieved? The 2009 PN-G Indians. Don't take it the wrong way; I'm not disappointed in them in the slightest. PN-G lost a student two days before the loss to eventual state finalist Brenham and I don't blame those boys in the slightest for the lack of effort and heart they showed in the first half - it was obvious that their minds were elsewhere and there's nothing wrong with that given the circumstances. I still think they have a lot to be proud of in the way they came out and almost made a comeback from a 20-0 Brenham lead at halftime (final score was 27-21 Brenham). I've often wondered what Coach Faircloth said to them during halftime to bring them back into the game - it must've been one heck of a speech. The most disappointing season, however, has to be the 2008 season. We won our first three games just to lose the last six (the third game of the season, PN-G @ Texas City, was cancelled due to Hurricane Ike). But I guess it all worked out. Without the 3-6 2008 season, we would have had no Brandon Faircloth and no 10-0 2009 season. -
Actually, the times that Nederland was bounced in the first round were the anomaly Bamakid. For over a decade, Nederland took deep playoff runs, winning first round playoff games for what at that time was one of the states longest active streaks at 11.
I know Ned's had it good with Neumann. Just throwing a little jab back at 'em. ;D -
Ned beating Stratford is an upset?
I probably should have clarified that one a little better. I actually didn't have that game originally listed as an upset; I modified the post to add it later. I posted the same thing on Facebook and two points were brought to my attention that convinced me to add it for good measure. First of all, while Nederland had a solid advantage over Houston Stratford going into the game, the game went into double overtime and Ned barely escaped with the win. The surprise there is that Nederland didn't have it in hand early on as I (and I think most people) expected. I guess you could say that, from that perspective, the game's outcome is more surprising than it is upsetting. Second, Nederland didn't get washed out in the first round of the playoffs for the third year in a row. In that sense, every game Ned wins in the playoffs could be considered an upset. ;) ;D I said in a post a while ago that Nederland has the defense to go deep. The question is Nederland's offense. I guess the Stratford game just about proved me right. More points were scored in overtime than in regulation. With that said, I hope Nederland can put it together and get to the Regional Final. -
Iowa State beat Oklahoma State Baylor beat Oklahoma USC beat Oregon Ozen beat Brenham Vidor beat Montgomery Nederland beat Houston Stratford Cal may very well pull it out against Stanford (knock on wood) I think Satan needs a thick winter coat.

Vidor vs. Angleton Predictions
PN-G bamatex replied to PhatMack19's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
You know, I was conflicted in the Pick 'ems this week. My gut kept telling me Vidor would win but my head said there was no way. Now that Vidor's won, my gut's still saying Vidor and my head has fallen silent. Vidor has never been a team that has just sat down and quit, and that's never been more true than this year. After the season Vidor has had, I hope you guys go and win it all. And if you keep playing like you are, you just might have a shot. Scalp 'em, Roll Tide and Go Pirates.
