Southeast Texas Football & Texas State History
PN-G bamatex replied to PN-G bamatex's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Very, very cool !! Congrats PNG on being honored. Yall have a great football tradition. I love my Hull-Daisetta Bobcat tradition, but I have come to see PNG has an awesome tradition also. So cool to see. I will bring my 11 year old son to watch a PNG game this season. Can't wait !! I wonder if Hull-Daisetta was mentioned at the museum? I grew up hearing about the great traditions at PNG, WOS, Newton and Hull-Daisetta. So special. :)
It's possible that H-D was mentioned. We were rushing to get through without getting caught with the camera, so I may have missed some things. -
As many of you know, the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin is currently featuring an exhibit called "Texas High School Football: More Than The Game." The exhibit features memorabilia, news articles, stories and interviews with fans of teams from all over Texas and is designed to teach museum-goers what high school football means to Texans and Texas communities. Well, we made it out to the museum Tuesday. Since cameras aren't allowed, I decided to sketch all of this from memory so the folks here at home could see it. ;) ;D Before I add the photos, I'd like to say that I made it a point to get everything there that was related to any Southeast Texas football team. Unfortunately, there were four things we missed because there was no way we could get the shots without getting caught by a museum employee. The first two were in the area immediately to the left of the entrance called "Bragging Rights," which is a diner set-up with a bunch of football posters and buttons you can press to hear fans of six different schools talk about their teams over the years. PN-G was one of the schools that had a recording, and the second item in that area was a 2009 Nederland poster on the wall (the only Nederland item in the exhibit). The third missed item was a plaque and TV screen about a quarter of the way into the exhibit that mentioned Mid-County Madness as the state's fiercest rivalry and several important events in the histories of Beaumont, Hebert, French, South Park, Forest Park, Charlton-Pollard and Ozen. The fourth item was another plaque across the hall from the TV screen that was part of the "Texas High School Football Timeline" and mentioned the attendance record PN-G set at the 1977 state championship. I basically left the exhibit slapping myself in the back of the head for missing these four things, but hopefully someone else will make the trip to Austin and get the missing shots. So, without further adieu, here's what we managed to get: We get there and what's the first thing we see? 2010-2011 PN-G Drum Major Seth Beaugh and the Indian Band on the cover of the exhibit's brochure. You can't tell it from the photo, but a close inspection of the brochure reveals that this shot of the band was taken at last year's PN-G game against Livingston at Indian Stadium. As a former PN-G band member, this was a very proud moment. ;D [IMG][Hidden Content]] When you leave the first section of the exhibit (which is the area where we missed all of those shots), you come into a section that talks about mascots. The centerpiece of this exhibit is Jimmy Girouard's Indian Spirit uniform from the 1964-1965 school year. [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] Standing in front of the uniform and its showcase and looking to your left, you'll find a picture of Mr. Girouard in full Indian Spirit dress dancing down what is today known as A-Hall at the high school, a picture of 2010-2011 Indian Spirit Brandon Provost dancing on the field in the Alamodome, and a plaque denoting the importance of the Indian mascot to PN-G, West Texas High School and El Paso Ysleta High School. [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] As you look at these displays, you'll notice something along the wall to your right that every PN-G fan everywhere should recognize: the letter, certificate and seal of the Cherokee Nation presented to our school in 1979. [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] As you move out of the mascot section and into the next section, you'll find an exhibit dedicated totally to spirit organizations (bands, cheerleading squads, drill teams, etc.). In this section, you'll find a PN-G Drum Majorette Headress on display and a station where six different songs can be played over the loud speakers. Wanna guess which PN-G crowd favorite was among those six songs? ;D This was another proud moment for a former Indian Band member. [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] The last section of the exhibit is a tribute to the fans, media and communities that have showcased high school football in Texas for decades. In this section, you'll find memorabilia, news articles, a television set programmed to play some famous plays from Texas high school football history, and a bookcase filled with books dedicated to some of the most famous teams in Texas. Among them, of course, was a copy of Dr. John Buck Ford's Down Trails of Victory: The Story of Port Neches-Groves High School Football. [IMG][Hidden Content]] In the same section of the exhibit, you'll find a plaque dedicated to long-time Texas high school football fan and Orangefield native Bennie Cotton: [IMG][Hidden Content]] ... and some Port Arthur Momentos: [IMG][Hidden Content]] [IMG][Hidden Content]] Folks, PN-G was the best represented of any school in our area, if not the state. Other schools were mentioned here and there, but PN-G was showcased for the entire state to see. I even met a fellow PN-G grad (c/o '63) that's lived in Austin since her UT days and still showed up wearing purple and white to take pictures of the exhibit and show her grandson what PN-G is all about. Most schools were lucky to have one item on display - some lucked out and got two - but PN-G had six separate items in the exhibit. If you get a chance to go to Austin and see it, go - it's worth every penny.

I could probably go back and find fifty different posts from the '09 football season from fans of every school in 20-4A that say the exact same thing, but whatever. We'll just see how many deep playoff runs PN-G has made in ten years and how many Nederland has made in ten years and call it at that. My point about the program is that whether it's fully implemented or not, you still have yet to see kids that developed entirely in it on the football field. The kids in the seventh grade during the '09 season (Faircloth's first season here) are just now entering high school. Everyone that's on the field right now was partially developed by the Burnett program and partially by the Faircloth program. You can't rate two programs against each other until both have products that are solely theirs on the field. The PN-G Indians of the 2014 season are going to look totally different than the PN-G Indians of today, and I personally believe that the rest of 20-4A - perhaps the rest of the state - is going to be in for a surprise when they hit the field.
No, your point was that you claimed Faircloth was going to reinvent football in SETX. Bring something "never seen before". I'm still waiting to hear about how the play calling varies in different parts of the state.
No, I never said Faircloth was going to reinvent anything. I said that he pulls new, unexpected things out of his playbook every time someone thinks they have his style figured out. The man's clever and he was known at Odessa Permian for doing the unexpected; it's not surprising that he brought that reputation with him. It's been said a thousand times on this site. You tend to get a lot of teams around here that focus more on an old school running game. The more successful teams in the area develop multiple weapons and at least have a decent passing game. That said, normally the large school teams around here don't have the same amount of depth as teams from Houston and other larger areas. For that reason, you tend to see coaches sticking wth the same thing rather than mixing it up to keep defenses guessing. Burnett, towards the end, was probably the world's worst, but he wasn't the only one. Neumann, to be honest, has probably been one of the better in the area for his ability to make quick adjustments and mix it up when he needed to. But that's beside the point. We still have yet to see a full product of Faircloth's program. What he's done with what he had when he got here was incredible. What a team that developed entirely under the Faircloth staff will look like on the field is unknown. That's the variable I was referring to.

Hey, like I said, take it or leave it. I just think Nederland is going to have some shocks and see some things that they haven't really seen before. Is it really that hard to believe that a coach from a much more competitive school in a larger classification might leave his opponents some raised eyebrows saying "didn't see that one coming"? I think not considering that it's already happened quite a few times in the last two seasons.
This happens every year, to every team, to every coach, to every classification, to every district, to every college team, to every nfl team, etc. all across the nation. Saying "I didn't see that one coming" and "I've never seen that before" are two very different things. Suggesting faircloth knows something that other coaches in setx don't know simply because he is from a larger school with different competition is foolish. If faircloth were to do a fake punt and be successful, nederland would not scratch their heads in awe that someone didn't punt on 4th down. If faircloth passed the ball on 4th and inches from their 40 yd line, nederland would not scratch their heads in awe that someone didn't run on 4th and inches. If faircloth (I could go on). It comes down to adjustments and executing, something Nederland does well. Ask faircloth about adjusting his defense when Sonnier(If I remember right player) was running all over them.
Trust me, there have been people saying "I've never seen that before" as well. It's no secret that you tend to get a different variety of play-calling depending on where you are in the state. Seeing the different styles of Houston area teams in the playoffs is a perfect example. It's something that I and other PN-G fans have noticed in playing Willis, Manvel and Brenham. It's also something that has been a subject of discussion (if I remember correctly, even an entire thread at one point) on this site. It's also no secret that football in the Golden Triangle is not the "be all, end all" of high school football in Texas; if it were Southeast Texas teams would be winning state championships year after year. Instead, the last large Golden Triangle school (as in 3A, 4A or 5A) to make it to a state championship was WO-S, and when was that? 2000? Instead, what do you see? Coaches from other areas with different styles coming into the Golden Triangle, making a few changes and turning once sub-prime programs into the premier teams in this area. Faircloth and his staff of coaches that almost completely came from outside of this area prove that. Even Neumann himself could fit that bill because he came to the area from a Houston school and brought Nederland back to prominence after thirty years of less than stellar results. The point is that coaches who introduce something new to the area typically have a great deal of success. Why? Because they come from different areas where the competition is a great deal more diverse.
