Wine & Swords: What could go wrong? The Spindletop Cavaliers and the Clear Lake Fencing Club present the first annual Bruno Invitational Epee Tournament. It is held at the Bruno & George Winery in Sour Lake, TX. Winery Link: [Hidden Content] Sour Lake, TX Link: [Hidden Content] REGISTRATION FEE: $25.00 This event is limited to fencers 21 years of age or older. $10.00 of the registration applies to the wine-tasting, which begins for each fencer upon being eliminated. Fencer should know in advance that, due to space considerations, the fencing pistes will not be of regulation length. (The current best guess sets them at 12 meters). Otherwise, all USFA rules and regulations will apply. Barring rain or excessive heat, this event will be held outdoors (under a tent) with an outdoor bar nearby. If the weather does not cooperate we will move into the wine making room. The event will max-out at 14 fencers. Please do not pre-register if you do not think you can attend. Please do not pre-register if you are younger than the legal drinking age in Texas. Due to the unique age & strip restrictions, no letter classifications can be awarded. Events Scheduled: Senior Mixed 21 & Over Epee Pre-Registration and further information at: [Hidden Content]

2009 National Fencing Championships in Grapevine, TX

While neither is from Texas, I thought this was a pretty good piece of video. This is the gold medal bout in the Youth 14 (& under) Men's Foil competition... Points only made with the tip. Only the torso is valid target. There are rules of right of way to determine who gets the point when both land touches... -
From the US NAtional Fencing Championships currently being held in Grapevine, TX. (Posted just because it's a good example of modern foil)

The 2009 National Fencing Championships are being held July 3-12 in Grapevine, TX at the Gaylord Hotel. This area covered by the SETEXsports Forum sits within the North Texas Division and the Gulf Coast Division of the United States Fencing Association (the 31st parallel of lattitude is the divider!). As the USFA makes results available (roughly 24-36 hours after an event, to ensure accuracy), I will try to post and update the results here: Gulf Coast Division Results and here: North Texas Division Results

Thanks to the Galveston County Daily News for a nice piece on the tournament. It was also much better than most newpaper articles on fencing. The writer didn't constantly insert "en garde" and "touche" into every other paragraph... Jean Laffite Classic
-
The Galveston Fencing Club will host the 3rd annual Jean Laffite Classic fencing tournament on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The competition will be held in the gym of the Moody Memorial First United Methodist Church, 2803 53rd Street (at Avenue U), Galveston, TX, 77551. Spectators are admitted free of charge. Competitions will be held in senior mixed foil, senior mixed epee and senior mixed sabre. Competitions designated as "senior" means the allowed age range for competitors is 13 years of age and up. Competitions designated as "mixed" meand they are not gender-segregated, that is, men and women compete against each other. Additionally, the Laffite Classic is a "U-only" meaning fencers who have already acquired a letter/year ranking are not allowed, on fencers so fat not classified/ranked. In foil points may only be scored with the tip of the weapon (where did you think the term "points" in sports came from?) and only the torso is valid target. In epee (pronounced: eh PAY) points may only be scored with the tip and the entire body from head to toe is valid target. In sabre points may be scored with tip or edge and everything from the hips up is considered valid target. For competitors: Pre-registration and competitor information is via FRED (the Fencing Results & Events Database) For spectators and those interested in knowing more you may visit The Galveston Fencing Club
