Score by quarters                         1         2         3         4          tot Spurger             17       15       14        10          56 Goodrich             8        16       14        16          54 FT shooting Spurger     7-10     70% Goodrich    7-14     50% 3 point shooting Spurger     5/11      45% Goodrich    3/13      23% Rebounds Spurger       33 Goodrich      31 Turnovers Spurger       27 Goodrich      22 Individual scoring Spurger George Whittaker         22  (14 rebounds) Shain Rawls                 15  ( 10 in 1st quarter) Forrest Anderson           7 Chase McGallion             4  (9 assists) Jarom Odom                  3  (game winning three) Luke McLeod                 3 Christian Norsworthy       2 Goodrich Lavonte Brown               25 Gary Randolph                 9 Ray Fisher                       7 Travion Henderson            5 Kaleb Lewis                     4 Tucker George                 3 Shaquille Rains                 1 Spurger dominated the first quarter and for the most part, the first half. Spurger got their biggest lead at 30-14 with 4 minutes left in the 2nd but Goodrich behind the play of Brown went on a 10-0 run to cut the lead down to 6, 30-24. Half ended with Spurger leading 32-24. The 3rd quarter started off just like the 1st as Spurger kept going inside to their big man Whittaker, who Goodrich had no answer for tonight. Whittaker pounded the smaller Hornets inside but it could have been worse. Whittaker missed several shots from point blank range or this would have never came down to the wire. Goodrich continued to up the pressure on the Pirated, forcing them to turn it over at a rapid rate. Brown started to penetrate and get some baskets to fall, chopping the lead all the way down to 1, 53-52. Finally Goodrich took their first and only lead with 40 seconds left on a steal and layup by Lewis. Spurger then turned it over again and was forced to foul with 9 seconds remaining. Randolph went to the line for a 1 and 1 and missed the frontend. Spurger rebounded, McGallion pushed it up quickly and found Odom in the right corner, who heaved up the 3, draining it with no time left on the clock. Spurger wins in dramatic fashion but they clearly out played Goodrich and it never should have come down to a last second shot. This forces a 4 way tie and we will wait to see how it is played out. SETXsports hopes to be there, wherever it is, to bring you these exciting games. Glad I decided to do this game. It was well worth it!! (see Spurger fans, I am not a jinx after all ;D) No you are not a Jinx thanks for coming out and broadcasting this game, some of our fans were not able to make it so this made it easy for them to feel like they were there. I know it is hard to believe that some of our fans were not there from looking at the size of our crowd. Maybe we all will be at the next one!!!
5.
This is for 6thman. I went to the UIL Athletics page ([Hidden Content]) and there is contact information on the left hand side of that page. I would start there. I suspect that diving off into that pool will be like most other dealings with schools. Maybe someone else could chime in here, but I have found that anytime you deal with a governmental entity, you will drown in red tape and policy. Your concern will most likely die a slow death. Good luck.
Thanks very much for the info. I figure as you said that my complaint will be covered in red tape but I still plan to give it. Maybe just maybe it will be read by the right person.
 6.
24-1A-II District game
This was the worst officals I have ever seen!!! One of the refs was hugging the players from Leggett, he stayed over at their bench laughing and joking with the players and their fans. This guy must have been one of those guys refered to as a ref that went to one meeting and just keeps his dues up. If there is a place where you can report bad refs I would love to know it cause this guy was BAD!!!!
 7.
He may have, that is something we will never know.  But we do know that his way did work?  I am a strong Christian person and I do not believe in using curse words, but the only perfect person to have lived was Jesus Christ.  I think we have all said curse words, and coaches are more susceptiable because their profession is one where emotions are high all the time.  That was his process, and it worked for him.  So to say it dosent work is incorrect because it did work.  I dont know if he would have been as successful, because that was not him.  He is who he was, and he got the best out of his yound men, alot of times young men that people said were very average.  Im not saying he never had good players, that is absurd, but he did more with little than most coaches do.  And he has the highest graduation rate of any college coach Im pretty sure.
No where in my posts on this subject did I refer to anyone being perfect. I am not talking about perfect coaches but ones with standards and good marols some of these players look to these coaches as the only role models they have!  But if you think it is ok for coaches to use profanity because that is just their profession and theirs is one of high emotions I will agree to disagree with you. I can think of many high emotion jobs that don't use profanity. There isn't anyone who can make me agree with this type of behavior.
 8.
I dont agree that cursing should be used in a constant manner.  But any human that has ever lived cannot say they have not said a curse word at some point in time.  Bob Knight would probably argue that he made a lot of young boys into men, with his style (arguably one of the top 3 coaches of all time if not higher).  And I am sure he used a few curse words.  When emotions are high, the chance for a curse word becomes more likely.  Just as the example with someone hitting themselves with a hammer and something slips out, when in practice and motivating, composure is a hard thing to keep when you are trying to squeeze the turnip to get all you have out of them.  In a perfect world, would no curse words be used, yes, but we all know this is not a perfect word and curse words do come out.  Even the best of men.
One Question do you think it was Bobby Knight's cussing or his coaching that turned boys into men? I think that is he would have left the curse words out and just coached he would have got the same results!!!
 9.

Why would it be considered acceptable to use profanity in a coaching situation. In reality, coaching is "teaching" a sport and there would be issues if the teachers were using it in the classroom. There would be all source of discipline if the students/athletes were using it as well. It all comes down to respect and being responsible as leaders.
I agree.  HS coaches *should* conduct themselves with the same professional behavior that a teacher would since they are employed within the education system and many also teach classes. That being said, I think there are different "degrees" of profanity.  I probably wouldn't be bothered by (and might not even notice) a coach hollering "move your a$$", but I would have a problem with something like "lazy SOB" or "worthless m.f."  Cussing directly AT someone is not motivating.
Profanity is profanity no different levels!! It SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN in school sports at ALL!!!  If a coach need to yell profanity or belittle his players he/she is not much of a coach!!! How will he gain more respect and motivation with this kind of behavior!!! If you think a coach should use these tactic should his players cuss him back while answering him? "Attitude reflects leadership"
 10.

Spurger's opportunity to win rests on whether or not Whittaker plays with a chip on his shoulder.  The Pirates need their big man to step up and play big in the most important game of the season.  Spurger has a great supporting cast around Whittaker.  Whittaker can dominate a game on both ends of the court when he chooses.  The Pirates will need him strong in close and dominant on the board if they want to open opportunities for their other scorers.  Whittaker is the key, he can't be one dimensional if the Pirates are to make the playoffs.  The Pirates record at home is just 4-5 so they will need to come out ready to play.  Let's hope a raucous crowd shows up to root them on to victory.  I say Pirates by seven.
I have watch George play for 6 yrs and I have never known him to ever play with a chip. But I can see were he is getting upset this year. He does not have a great supporting cast, he has a good point guard to get him the ball. But anyone that has seen them play, they just need to double him and make someone else beat them. and no one has steped up do help. In the two game that they have lost in dist. he has scored 51 points. Looks like the kid is doing all he can to help his team, just need some of that supporting cast to step up and help...JMO....
True Blue I agree and disagree.....He does have a good supporting cast but everyone is playing timid and don't want to step up and take that scoring roll like Blankenship did last year. They have the ability but not the i don't care what others think attitude that Blankenship did last year. The point guard is doing all he can to fill the gaps but can't do it by himself. The 3 guards that get the most playing time can't decide which one wants to play every game with that attitude and drive to step it up!!! Rawls is outstanding from the inside and outside, Odom can rip it from the outside and drive from time to time .(He just need to shoot more). Anderson has been a big asset but needs to shoot more. We have a good bench that needs to decide when the are in they are gonna make a difference. LOVE THEM PIRATES!!!!!

It is hard for theses young guys to do everything that is expected of them. Keep your head up George it will all work itself out!!!
 12.
what ya think? Burkeville won first game 69-68
Is Burkeville's key player #23 back was out with a foot injury?
 13.
whatever it takes to get the point across
This is what is wrong with our country today excepting this kind of behavior. How do you expect the players to give the coach and administrators respect if they don't get any and everyone thinks its ok as long as you are getting your "point across". This is not the way a coach should conduct him/herself. It doesn't take cursing anyone to get your point accross. This is unexceptable behavior!!!!

 15. My vote goes for Calobe Isaacs at Spurger. I know he doesn't have the record of the other coaches mentioned but he is not only a coach to our students but a Christian influence also. He not only encourages the boys but the girls as well. He is a very positive influence for ALL students. Thanks Coach Isaacs for all that you have done and continue to do for all the Spuger pirates on and off the court.
 16. I say Spurger they carry a good crowd on the road as well!!!!
 17.
how big is spurgers big man?  how many do they have returning from last years team?
Starting players returning from last year Whittaker, McGallion, Odom, and Rawls. On the bench from last year Mcleod.
 18.
This one was painful to watch. Spurger won something like 77-9. It was 62+/- to 0 at halftime. Need to hand it to Chester. Those kids never gave up and didn't get frustrated. A very young team that was simply outmatched & outsized. It appears to be a long year for Chester. I do not think that the Spurger players enjoyed this one too much. The Spurger starters played the first quarter and then the bench played the rest.
This was a good time to let our players that had injuries heal!!!! Go Pirates!!!

I am sure you will see his posts on here soon!!!
 20. By the way I didn't give credit where credit is due.....San Augustine had a good team!!!
 21.
Should be no surprise, they did play a good team.   Blakenship's leadership and Hutto's defense from last year is missing.  Rawls - had outstanding play in all games, but could not do it by himself.   The two prima donna's need to get back to the basics of fundamental basketball, teamwork and leadership and this team will be successful.
The pirates have a good team this year!!! Yes we will miss Blankenship and Hutto. I am not sure which two you are talking about as PRIMA DONNAS but this team does NOT have any of those. We have leader, game players and a coach that will hold them together. We are in the process of working with new faces and old ones. Glad everyone is watching us so close!!! GO PIRATES
 22. We are here just getting warmed up!!! Go Pirates!!!
 23.
If you are strictly speaking of our area teams, I see no one winning a state title. Of all the teams in the state, these are my picks for state titles: 5A    Fort Bend Bush 4A    The Colony 3A   Lubbock Estacado 2A   Hallettsville 1A DI    Clarksville 1ADII    Paducah
Don't count out our Spurger Pirates!!!!

Seem like I said this to someone on here before but worth saying again. When you have a good thing going there is always someone there to try an belittle you or make what your doing sound bad. I say ignore ignorance!!!! Thank to you Old Ref we as spurger fans appreciate the positive things people have been saying about our team, coaches, community and fan. We are PROUD TO BE PIRATES!!!!!!
 25.
i think cayuga beats spurger 100 times out of 100.
Well Bmtfan this is the last time I will acknowledge that you have and opinion but I felt there was one more thing that needed to be said. In my life I have ran into people like you alot. I am grouping you in with the people that when someone is on the road to greatness there is always someone like you that is jealous and wants to knock you down. We do acknowlege that Cayuga had a very good team, we take nothing from them and we know that we were beaten by the State Championship team. But in saying that we also have achieved alot this year!!! We will not allow a person like you to take ANYTHING from that. So thanks again for again bringing us closer as a team and a town by trying to knock us down.
