Question for the Basketball Gurus!
mammagotjuice replied to mammagotjuice's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
HF is a school district that has the lowest pay scale in the area(regardless of classification) kids should be happy to have uniforms and coaches that care. As far as loyalty is concerned the kids learn from their parents so NOPE no loyalty. Taking your kids to where basketball is a sport they can win multiple state champions and get better every day would be a couple of great reasons to move, but you want to promote change and get rid of a good man a great father and person that has impacted many young men's lives. Your idea of promoting change is to under mind the coaches. I bet you have emailed the coach and loudly complained and when your squeaky wheel did not get the greasing you felt necessary you aired your loyalty on the web. Hit up ESPN and see if they have time to do a one special on your child's decisions "Lunch line Vs sandwich line" "Boxers Vs Briefs" By the way having a big time D1 athlete at HF is like having offers from KY, Duke and UNC and choosing the worst team in Southland Conference because of academics. These outstanding young players are missing out on so much by playing at one of the worst programs in all of SETX. Entitled is what you are you are entitled to all your opinions but when you go on a website and shout your loyalty it just sounds like sour grapes and moving on would be best for all concerned. Sure fans in the stands have heard your loyalty long enough.
Choice...I have never called for any coaches job! If the coach loses his job God forbid, in this economy that would be terrible! How dare you accuse me of getting rid of a coach. If the coach ever loses his job, it will not be because of me! I do not have that type of influence, money, or desire. If I had that type of influence, my call for ATTITUDE and CULTURE change would not fall on deaf ears. This coach has been in Hamshire long before my kids even entered the Middle School basketball scene. So, TWO months of me could not possibly get a coach fired. Your accusations are ludicrous and shows real shallowness. Most of your posts are jumbled running thoughts....hard to decipher. If you cared so much for the coach, why would YOU be on this forum calling HIS program "one of the worse programs". Really? You need to assess your loyalty. Furthermore, you have entered a territory that I do not wish to discuss any longer. When you start talking about people losing their jobs, you have entered into unchartered territory. As a coach having tough skin is a must! Somebody is always gonna' have something to say. Just like starting a controversial thread....you gotta be ready for all the rocks being thrown. I know quite a few parents that feel exactly how I feel, but I am the one out here taking the lumps...but it comes with the territory, although this thread was originally about making the best team of the best and why that is not happening in MY opinion. Hopefully the basketball coach will not ever have to endure people going to the Superintendent calling for his job like the previous AD. Choice, We will remain in HF as long as the boys see fit. You nor anyone else can or will change that. I pay taxes here. So seeing my face every game day is what you and anyone else with a problem will have to deal with...thats your fate. And you had better believe come tomorrow, I will be there with bells on....cheering my team on! -
Wow. I don't want to move I just want to complain. Sure that your kids can read and see that you would rather hold them back at a school that has a top Little dribbler program that fizzles out in HS, then to move them to a challenging program at P.A.M. HJ or Silsbee. You are right just keep complaining and your kids will learn that all that matters is to get on a message board and play the old blame game. When that Little dribbler team stomped on the HF varsity did that not clue you in!!!!!!!! You should have had your mighty Little Dribblers play HJ or Silsbee those are the teams you are measured against. Hope the manager that the HF kids has talks to the parents and get those kids to a school where proper basketball training takes place. Kids please tell your parents that you need a bigger challenge then to start on a team that has not won 10 district games in basketball in the last 5 years combined..
Well I was not complaining but trying to promote change. My kids...at home are not allowed on this forum independently. Central home computer...but I am sure other students will oblige. The kids are loyal to their school and they can choose. I am loyal to HF and would relish an its success. Every district should want and strive to be competitive at the very least. No one finds pride in being last. What benefit would come to you having my kids leave the district? You are so personal and full of contempt. What's the root cause? You and Agg are the worst. But maybe you like him have an inside track and are beacons. No matter what people say and how the boys are treated, they will continue to work hard...our household motto is "hard work and talent outshines entitlement" others will see and know the truth. If they are truly talented, nothing will be able to suppress it. You guys should watch the Marcus Dupree documentary and see what happened to him with all his talent! -
If your kid is happy at school and doing well academically, stay there. Basketball season can get frustrating but even if your son is the next Michael Jordan, what happens on his school team means nothing. If you think he won't get recruited because of his school team you are wrong. No one gets recruited based on their high school team anymore, unless you get to Austin. Choose your child's school based on academic excellence, crime rate, prevalence of drugs, etc. If he's a talented athlete, in any sport, get him on a "club" or "select" team in a metropolitan area. Recruiting is done in the high school off season now. Enjoy high school basketball for what it is.
Yes, What you are saying is mostly true. Because an initial recruitment letter for the oldest came recently, and I know it was because of "LIVE" event appearances during summer ball. So, with that I am now digressing and will remain in observation mode. Thanks so much for the redirection. -

If H.F wants to compete on the Varsity level then he's gonna have to play those guys up. Hj is wasting no time grooming their Freshman Sensation (Bosha) who put up 20+ against Ktz in his 1st Varsity game. Oh and he starts...
I disagree. The varsity is not void of good players. My biggest issue is pulling the best together....I want to compete...not just play. And this will become a very pivotal issue next year....I want a winning attitude to become infectious and we need to start now. Lastly, this is nothing personal at the coach...happen to like the coach a lot...nice person. Just trying to gain an understanding of the plan. Kudos to HJ for starting early Bosha will gain a lot from the experience.
Pivotal issue next year because both your boys will be in high school. Laying the foundation now? Would you have started this thread if your freshman was already on varsity?
Wow this is a tough crowd...thank God I got tough skin 'cause I am getting a sense of some things that I did not know existed. Pivotal issue? Yes you are very correct. My 8th grader will be entering 9th grade next year. Right now he is one of the top 5 guards in the State of Texas for 2015 as reported by a very reputable ranking service...not by me. Will he remain one of the top guards in Texas for his age...that remains to be seen. But given the current status, I am very concerned about decisions being made regarding my son. Boastful?..no...Fact?...yes. Level of competition is very important. I see how serious the basketball business becomes on a National level...every summer. And that's any sport on the select level not just basketball. Major D1 Coaches are watching 8th graders at summer showcases. Secondly, had my son made varsity this year, and I felt that there were other players left out that would be beneficial to the varsity program's success...heck yea, I would post the same question. See, contrary to what you believe that I believe, I know full well that my son cannot win a game single-handedly. I am all about being competitive, expecting to win even when the odds are against you. Lastly, regarding Choice...no one in HF, HJ, Beaumont, etc, will ever make a player leave or even infer that a player leave until when or if he/she so chooses to leave. I am very firm on that notion! -
Coaches have different reason for not playing freshman on the Varsity. Some have a "rule" about it, although it might not be a smart move on their part. Pride may be bigger then brain. Some may hear "rumors", read message boards, etc and think if that player or players parent is not happy with the program they have in place, why would the coach want them on varsity. You never know the reasons things happen. Keep working hard, do your best when you get your chance, if this is the season you have to endure. It is also way early in the season, hopefully it will get better by district.
until now...I have never disclosed any displeasure whatsoever....shame on them for following rumors. But if a kid deserves to play at higher level of comp and has the biggest heart and strongest work ethic district wide. Not to mention a winning attitude and doesn't get rewarded...that's foul. Right now no one at Hamshire is superstar player but some do have great potential. Also if your son has been rewarded for his talent and hard work then you are probably not in the position to have fully understand. But the fate is accepted....and those players will continue to go out each day and contribute to their teams. As you know, Summer ball will be here before you know it. -
Any weight training on game days is stupid, but if you choose to be a multiple sport athlete then you should be dedicated to each sport by giving effort into each respective sport. If there isn't a game on that day and a student only has basketball practice that day then the student should do his lifting for football on that day, but lifting on game days is totally ignorant on the football and basketball coach's behalf. If I'm not mistaken I have heard that H-F actually has some talented players on varsity this year and if that's true then there is no reason not to see results.
Your saying that during basketball season, basketball players who also play football are expected to lift weights for football if they do not have a basketball game that day. So I would assume that during football season these same kids practice football and do their basketball training on Monday thru Thursday?
clarification: even players that do not play football are lifting weights on game day..so I am told. I am all for weights but not on game day. -

Now, you are out-sighting the insighted insider. You are obviously privy to some conversations off limits to me...that fly on the wall. Oh and in the real world....being a senior does not give you some magic pass......that thought process is the problem. When my boys are seniors I hope there are some underclassmen trying to beat them out...keeps them working hard to keep their spot. It will happen in the collegiate arena and further on into the workforce. Life lessons. -

Well, maybe we should suspend this conversation and have an all out discussion midseason since someone said its too early for assessment. In the end what it boils down to is that ALOT of sacrifice and hardwork is put in...far more than most people I know. This is not just a pastime. Being under the radar getting recruitment letters is serious business and it feels great when your kid gets one. Free tuition is serious to me. So all I want is for HF to treat basketball with the same respect that football gets...plain and simple. I just want a standard of excellence for the place my kids love. -

I stated that it looked as though you might be shopping for another school for athletic reasons and that is a no-no. You said "it's a free country" and we can go wherever we choose to go. The top 50 recruit "chose" to go to Yates but is ruled ineligible for moving for athletic reasons therefore why he has to play JV ball this season. Never was comparing the two programs, but you knew that already. ;) -

As for this being a free country, explain that to the top 50 recruit who has to play JV ball this season over at Houston Yates. ;)
Based on your earlier posts... clearly realized you have had a few conversations or 2. That was evident. But please do not insult my basketball intelligence by comparing HF to Yates. Those programs are worlds apart! Are you serious?
I am sure that there are many things that the coach has to take into consideration. First, he is looking out for what is best for the entire team. Not just your son. Second, what is going to be best for that player. Playing limited minutes in a Varsity game or playing a lot of minutes in a JV game and going against the varsity in practice. I am sure that Coach Richards has taken all of these things into consideration. Man it is a little early for this. Why do you think they are going to be that bad. The only lost to Vidor by 12 and beat the crap out of Deweyville. 1-1 is not that bad. Give the team some time to get going. Also, did you ever think it wasn't his idea to do circuit weights on game day. Maybe the guy over the entire athletic program is dictating that. He is called the athletic director. Just a thought. [/qearly Yes it is early. But the Deweyville game is not the game to measure by. The 2a team was not very competitive. Yes, you are right its not all abt my son but read the post again..there are others that could contribute greatly. Lastly, if the AD is dictating circuits...he needs a lesson on basketball training. But you know what.. I will be patient and observe. -
Ask H.F coach!! I hear that the J.V beats up on the Varsity everyday in practice.
Well, I am not bashing the Varsity. They are working hard. My question is more from understanding the coaching rationale. The varsity coach's top priorty should be the Varsity team. Now, do I think my son who is NOT on varsity the final answer...of course not...not saying that at all. However, but he and others on Freshman and JV that could assist the Varsity team greatly. So, if you are probably not going to have a winning season anyhow, why would you not place your younger players with the most potential, with your stronger Varsity team members to gain experience and growing pains now....for later. Does that not make sense to anyone? It obviously makes sense to HJ's coach. In my opinion, in basketball stripes are not earned on how many years you have played but how you produce on the court...whatever works well together. -

Parents and players have to take the bull by the horns. Gone are the days where the coach was God. Players have to do the extra things to get your name out there ...independent of the coach's efforts. Having a coach with multiple long tentacles is a plus, but if you are not blessed with that you may have to find your own avenue.

Now that is a great topic to discuss. Entitlement is expecting to be given something w/out putting in the time and effort....just because. Expecting reward for hard work and effort is a horse of a different color. Hard work and effort outshines entitlement any day! Inspect closely, while others are playing Xbox yet getting entitlements, there are some youth that are quietly putting in the hard work in the gym being accused of being entitled. Be wise and know the difference.

If he was 6'10 and plays above the rim then that's when setx needs to worry about H.F...I'm telling you this guy is good but its gonna take more than him to whip the Big 3.(Hardin County Teams) he will face all sort of zones and presses. Lots of help defenses if needed. Joubert, Williams and Sutherland will not let this 1 guy beat them. These are some of the Best coaches in Texas. Check their background if you don't believe me. State Champs and several State appearances. Dove hunting is my favorite. Lmao
Swag Public accouncement! Check the records...they already lettin that small 5'5 PG beat them..district champs! Dang you are testy..where's your swag? Stop hatin..he's only 12! I never read were Dove pumps j. Hunter up on here....the only person hypin J Hunt on here is you! Swag is truly a drag! LMBO! Okay..I'm done....this was fun!
