  1. West Orange Stark High School seniors who do not have enough credits earned to graduate could be walking across the stage at the Dan R. Hooks stadium next May — or perhaps not. Discussions were heated Monday night when West Orange-Cove Consolidated Independent School District board members debated two issues, the stadium’s new name and whether non-graduating students can walk with their class during commencement ceremonies. Last May when other districts grappled with the sensitive issue of graduating students’ walking requirements, board member Pete Amy asked the district to examine its own policy before the start of the new school year. The board discussed the current policy, which states that a student must meet all-district and state requirements (this includes passing the TAKS test) to be eligible to walk at graduation. Trustees discussed allowing students to walk if they were missing one credit or less or had not passed the TAKS test. The students would be recognized differently at the commencement ceremony and would still not receive their diploma until the missing requirements were fulfilled. No action was taken on the issue. A new name for Mustang Stadium was also discussed at Monday’s meeting. In earlier months, board member Eric Mitchell asked for the item to remain on the agenda for discussion and action. The item calls for the stadium to be renamed Dan R. Hooks Stadium, honoring current athletic director and head football coach Dan Hooks. “This is an honor that is well-deserved,†Harry Barclay, school board president, said. “We are in the process of remodeling the stadium and it’s an opportune time to rename it.†Board member Shirley Martin voiced opposition to the proposal, saying that other community figures deserve the recognition and should be considered as well —especially since Hooks does not reside in the district. Hooks is a resident of Bridge City and his children all attended school there. Board member Nancy Byers argued that Hooks’ winning record and accolades are more than deserving of the honor. “His accomplishments speak for themselves,†Byers said. “He is very much a part of this community and he has built this program into one of the best in the state. You can’t say high school football in Texas without the name Dan Hooks. “He is known for winning and it doesn’t matter where he pitches his tent — this is an honor he deserves.†A vote on the stadium’s new moniker is expected to be held during an upcoming meeting. The district also discussed the amount of money to take out in Tax Anticipation Notes. Lewis A. Wilks, a financial advisor with Coastal Securities in Houston, was present at the meeting to answer questions about the amount of money the district will be able to use in a Tax Anticipation Note and when that note will be paid off. After discussion, board members will most likely approve a $4 million dollar Tax Anticipation Note that will be paid off on Feb. 15, 2007. No action was taken on the issue, and Wilks will be present at next week’s meeting with the proper paperwork if the action is approved. Superintendent Dr. O. Taylor Collins also announced that the district is sitting securely on a $9.5 million dollar surplus — a great improvement considering the district’s financial struggles in the past few years. The next meeting of the WO-CCISD school board is scheduled for 6 p.m. July 31.

  6. Beasley a Mustang one more time Van Wade The Orange Leader WEST ORANGE — Before Kenneth “Deon†Beasley straps it on for the “burnt orange†of The University of Texas, the 2006 West Orange-Stark graduate will represent his high school one final time when he lines up for the South All-Stars in the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football Game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1 at Texas’ Memorial Stadium. The game will be aired live by Fox Sports Southwest. Beasley has been back in Orange, preparing for the game and was hanging around the Mustang Fieldhouse Monday, chatting it up with former teammates and the Mustang coaching staff. “It’ll be a great feeling to represent my high school that one final time,†said Beasley. “It will give me a final chance to show respect to some great coaches that have pushed me to be the best I could be. To top it off, I’ll get to play the All-Star game in the stadium I will play in for the next several years.†Beasley had a phenomenal senior campaign for WO-S, leading the Mustangs to a 13-1 mark and a trip to the Class 3A Division I State Semifinals from his quarterback slot. He had his hand on 47 touchdowns. He completed 116 0f 204 passes for 1,928 yards and had 23 TD tosses and just 11 interceptions. He rushed for 1,468 yards on 244 carries and scored 23 TDs and had a back-breaking 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the District 21-3A-clinching victory against Bridge City in the regular season finale. Along the way he picked up 21-3A MVP honors and All-Orange Leader MVP honors for the second consecutive year. He also earned Army All-American honors and participated in the Army All-American Bowl. Beasley had quite a nice stay in Austin this summer. He took some summer classes in the first summer session before concentrating on the upcoming All-Star game. He’s already bulked up quite a bit with a heavy workout schedule. “Texas wants me to bulk up some more, they want me to be around 190 pounds for sure,†said Beasley. “I got myself into a nice routine over the summer. We would work out about three times a day and we’re eating really good.†Beasley ate up opponents really good as a Mustang. As a junior, he spent a lot of quality time as a defensive back and receiver and spent a little time at defensive back as a senior, which was a good thing because the Longhorns like Beasley’s chances at cornerback. “I like the challenge of playing against people one-on-one,†said Beasley. “It’ll be a lot different at the next level because everyone is so big and fast. That’s why they’re really pushing me to get stronger.†Of course, there will be a big difference lining up against the Oklahoma’s compared to the Hardin-Jeffersons of the world. “It’s going to be a whole new ball game and it’s a challenge I’m definitely looking forward too,†said Beasley. “It’s what I’ve always dreamed about.†Long-time WO-S head coach Dan Hooks has always liked Beasley’s potential. “He just has amazing skills and he’s such a competitor,†said Hooks. “He’s going to give Texas a boost, you can count on it. I don’t know what all they’re feeding him in Austin, but he is looking really good. It’ll be a nice feeling seeing him represent West Orange-Stark at the All-Star Game for the last time. Every now and then, that special athlete comes through the program. We’ve had a handful here and Deon is certainly one of them.†Beasley will be just one of three Southeast Texans on the South team, which will be coached by George Harris, who is from Gregory-Portland. Joining Beasley will be fellow Texas recruit Robert Joseph, a defensive back from Port Arthur Memorial, and Toddrick Pendland, the elusive Newton Eagle running back who signed with McNeese State University. Larry Dippel, of Amarillo, will coach the North All-Stars. The THSCA All-Star Basketball Game will be held Monday, July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
