Did Jasper break UIL rules on the first day of practice?
kicker replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Here is my take on this.....Yes, the UIL has certain rules on FULL pads. That wasnt FULL pads. It was to protect the players in a drill. We need to remember that this is a contact sport and the kids need to be protected even in the first week. I personally think the pads rule is dumb. The whole point is to protect the kids. If you look at the clip, the dummys were used to just protect the player and the person holding it. And on the thighpad comment, most of the new underarmour has foam built into the shorts and shirts these kids wear. its not like they were doing tackling drills. Protecting the kids should be number 1! -
Mustangs hit the field for Coach Thompson
kicker replied to WOSgrad's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Loyalty is Orange County. Includes WOS, LCM, BC, Orangefield and Vidor. (oh, and occasionally Deweyville, they should be Orange County anyway, LOL) We are all a family here. We showed that last season. Good luck to all the SETX teams and lets have a great, injury free year!!! -
Hey Coop, Ive been watching the loop on yalls site for the past few hours. i noticed a storm that is intinsifying quickly south Of lafayette in the Gulf. Its moving toward us. Isnt this how Humberto started? Im not a weather guy, but it doesnt look right. Keeps getting bigger and looks organized.

I was one of the broadcasters at that game for the Silsbee radio station. Silsbee, indeed, played a great game - you have to to beat WO-S. But I don't remember that WO-S played that horribly. But then, I'm old and don't remember much anyway. 8). Oh yeah, we played probably one of our worst games in years. I'm not taking away Silsbee puting it to us, but If I could get the stats, we had more turnovers in that game, than the whole season combined. I want to say we had three touchdowns called back, could hold on to the football, and the weather was horrible. Took our speed away from us. Couldn't even kickoff without falling down in the mud. Trust me, I remember well.

Didnt we also miss an important xtra point in that game as well... LMAO ;D
Yep, we sure did. no excuses, but it was hard to kick a ball, just like it was hard to hold on to one that night. I wish someone had a box score for that game. i want to see the combined turnovers of both teams. We probably broke a state record for most in a game. lol. I even think Silsbee missed 3 fieldgoals?? Cant remember that well.
Hmmm..... played "horrible against a great Silsbee team". Well first of all, that "great" Silsbee team did lose 5 games that year, so I wouldn't consider them great. Second, I think Silsbee had a lot to do with how "horribly" WOS played in that particular game. Third, Silsbee didn't play all that great themselves in that game, with missing 3 field goals and fumbling inside the 10, missing out on 4 other potential scores in that 21-20 win. Now kicker, don't let me confuse you with that "other" Mustang fan that always points out that when WOS loses, they play "horrible" and the other team plays "great". ;) ;D
LOL, no. I see what you are saying. Just goes to show that even though you can lose 5 games in regular season, you can peak at the right time and make a run. We both played sloppy that night, but anyone that was at that game will agree with me objectively. Silsbee beat us plain and simple, but you have to admit that we didn't play anywhere near our expected potential. I think playing a playoff game in port Arthur had something to do with it. Also, silsbee won their next two I believe, so you can't say it was the same silsbee team we played earlier in the season. Seemed like a totally different team.
So you are saying WOS beats Kibyville in regular season then loses to them in playoffs. Interesting
Seen that before. Back in the 80s and 90s, Jasper always had our number in the regular season, then we would beat them in the playoffs. Its hard to beat the same team twice. Seen alot of that from many schools.
I have high hopes for WOS but it is a new offense and even though I expect them to do well I hope fans can be patient if they have to work out any kinks. Thompson has played a huge role in the Mustangs past success but to say he ran the program for the last 20 years is a bit insulting to coach Hooks. JMO
No, no disrespect, Hooks was the leader, but that doesnt always mean he was running it. Like a President ordering a General to do a task. No disrespect. All the staff over the years had their role or nack. titles before names doesnt mean much at WOS. Anyone of us ex WOS players can understand what I meant.
I look for WO-S to be ranked #1 at some point in the season before the playoffs.
Pretty bold statement. What makes you think that?

SO.....just thought maybe I would start a discussion on how everyone looks at the near future of WOS football. Ive noticed in other topics that some have dropped our "status" in the area due to our new coach. Just want a friendly conversation of what everyone thinks. This isnt a Homer thread, just curious. I will say this though, If anyone believes WOS will be down because of the Coach change, Im not so sure. Coach Thompson has basically been running the program for the last 20 years. Anyways, im looking forward to this season and to see some teams come alive, and the ones who havent, start to surprise people.

Looks like 3A might get an unwelcomed new adversary
I would imagine that the realignment will include a new Houston area 3A district. I believe they have been wanting to address the small HISD 4A school issue for a while. Their reason for staying 4A I think was travel expense issues. Since there will be at least 4 or 5 they can proably justify a new district.
Yep, you are correct. The LM coach said they could have dropped last alignment but the travel would have been brutal. -
Anyone getting new uniforms this year?

WOS will probably have something new(Besides the helmet of course). Coach Thompson was always in charge of designing the uni's so I bet now that hes the big enchilada, hell have something. -
TSRN Greater Houston Top 15 Rankings
There is no doubt that Brenham is loaded up on defense, with what the Cubs have coming back this yr. there is a good argument that can be made that Brenham has the top defense in the state, you guys have at least 7 all-district defensive players returning. I know Brenham has TB Troy Green (6’1†198) coming back and WR Tre’Mund Moore (6’1†170, Jr.) returning for the offense, so you'll get no argument from me about the Cubs being a great team, with a great coaching staff..... that really wasn't what I was trying to say in my post concerning the TSRN ratings. When I went back and read my post I realized that I had left out what I meant to say, if you will notice I said both teams are loosing their QB well the other team that I failed to mention was Friendswood who is ranked at #10, I just think that they should be ranked higher than a #10 spot. So let me compare the 2 teams with out taking anything away from the accomplishments of Brenham. (1) Both coaches were named coach of the yr. in their respective districts. (2) Both teams lost their starting QB. (3) Brenham is 23-4 the last 2 seasons. (4) Friendswood is 23-6 the last 2 yrs. (5) Brenham in 2008 made it to the Q-Finals, 2009 State lost to Aledo, 2010 Bi-District. (6) Friendswood 2008 Semi-Finals, 2009 Q-Finals, 2010 Semi-Finals. (7) Brenham overall record- 535-363-41 59% win Pct.-939 games played. (8) Friendswood 394-261-14 overall 60% win Pct-669 games played. I realize that Brenham has played over 250 more games than Friendswood, heck Brenham has been playing football since the turn of the century... I said all that to say this....Taking into account Friendswood's record the last 2 or 3 yrs. why didn't TSRN give them a little more love than a #10 spot?? PS the #eight in my key board seems to be messed up it put a cool instead of the # ;D
Whats sad is we had Friendswood on the ropes but couldnt close the deal. :-\ -
Southeast Texas gets little respect in Texas Football
Truth is over the last 25 years the balance of power in Texas HS football has shifted to the major metro areas of Houston, DFW, Austin and San Antonio especially for 4A/5A but also you see some suburban 3A's as well. I don't know the reason's for sure, but Texas is becoming more urban and less rural and the money in the state is definately in the Metro's so, like everything else, you can follow the money trail. Lake Travis would be a prime example. Austin suburb that is extremely wealthy. They make sure they have the best coaches and facilities. Katy and Southlake Carrol are two more examples.
Completely agree. What was it a few years ago?.....I believe it was Katy Morton Ranch that went a long way in just thier second year, or maybe it was Cinco Ranch. Both new schools in a very wealthy, uprising area. -

I would be willing to bet if the make it to the championship in 4A that they will do fairly well in 3A. Henderson has been the posterchild for mediocrity in 4A and won the Championship in their first year in 3A. Do you think LaMarque may have more talent than Henderson? LM is a perennial power in 4A.
LM is very similar to WOS. Seems that losing kids doesnt change the caliber of football they play. They are also one of those teams that can start out 0-3 and then make a run to state. You never know which LM team will show up. I could be wrong on this, and im sure that Gas or Griff could help, but I think Hooks was trying to schedule a pre season game with LM for a while but never could get it all together. As I see it, they will be in 3A so we probably will meet them sometime in the future. They have always had our number and bounced us from the playoffs when we had some of our all-time best teams. i.e. '93, '95, '97. We did however beat them in 2000 on the road to the state game and also maybe sometime in the '80s? -
Is WO-S football going to the I-formation the right move?
The I will make them better on D. It will chew up the clock and keep the defense fresh for four quarters.
Only, and that is ONLY if we can move the chains. One our Achilis heels in the past is that we had the potential to score so quickly that the D never had time to rest. I know it may sound crazy, but sometimes speed kills YOU also. So maybe the "I" would help us. i do not see a perfect answer here but I do believe in Cornell and his football brain. Dont be surprised when he will pull something out of his %$#^ and surprise ALOT of people. He is that good a coach. -

Well, like I said. This was right out of one of their coaches mouth. His HISD 3A comment was more of a "hopefull" comment than anything. He was pretty sure of being in a district that minimum travel was 1.5 hours. Im not sure what district that would be. Im sure some of yall Western Houston saavy people could help. And it doesnt matter who gets to the Region Finals, id bet that whomever it would be would be facing the Coogs. Where is the Reg3/4 cutoff? Would they be Reg. 4 if they go to that south western H-town district that someone said earlier? -
I say unwelcomed in humerous way, but I was at a gas station in Orange yesterday and ran into an assistant coach for LaMarque and he was very sure they will be joining our already overcrowded 3A. Boy, Reg. 3 might get alot tougher. But, as he was telling me, they might be Reg. 4. He told me that as it looks, all their district away games would be a minimum of 1.5 hrs. He is hoping that they get into HISD(Houston) with Sterling and a few other Houston schools dropping class. What a cluster would it be if they had to come to an eastern 3A district?? not sure if they would be closer to 21-3A or the Huffman, Coldspring district? looks like it would be far either way if UIL doesnt make an HISD 3A district. And this isnt hearsay, this is directly from a varsity coaches mouth.
Again in 3A you don't have to average 275 across the line since you won't be facing teams with an abbundance of huge D Linemen or big LB's. A rested Defense will make more plays and lead to more points. That said, WOS has the athletes to score quickly no mater what offense they are running! The big question is will Cornell put the majority of his athletes on defense? Also from what I understand, this incoming freshman class will have the ability to be very diverse on offense. Good passing QB and several big time targets. Could see some flip floping in offensive philosophy over the next four years??
Not too sure about that NdN, look at Waco LaVega when we (WOS) played them a few years ago. That 3A team probably averaged 275 on the line. That had to have been the largest 3A team I had ever seen. -
