I think everyone is panicing over one bad season in decades. What happened last year was that UT lost all of its leaders, personell were in the wrong positions and the season was lost after the second or third game. With the departure of Mccoy and Earl Thomas, you lose your offensive and defensive leader. There will be some that will now step up. I see this coming season being back to the old Longhorns. People are too easy to jump ship after one bad season. Everybody relax and have faith.

In todays orange leader is Luke Domas' Essay he wrote to the coaches magazine about what he has been through in his 17 yrs of life. Great essay and Im sure he will become a great adult with what he has been through as a kid. I feel that its kind of unfair that a teenager has to have gone through this, but God put people through things to make them stronger. To this day, im still in shock of what I saw on that Friday night in September. I will never forget, and will always live my life 112%. And great job to the Orange Leader for publishing this.

I know a few board members that were happy to see Hooks retire and would like to shift the focus of WOS from "football" to "academics". I'm not saying I agree with their sentiment, but there are those that want to fill the power vacuum with someone they have more control over.
Well, focus on academic standards should always be the case. Perhaps the change that needs to take place is that of the school board members themselves for when I attended West Orange-Stark, the school board and administration recognized that there was room for both. The academic decay is not due to the fact that Dan Hooks was coach for over 30 years. That decay due to this particular school board's, many of which have been on the board for a while, use of standards and criteria other than ability and excellence of its administrators. That lead to choosing administrators which were inept while overlooking administrators who were capable of ensuring the students of WOCCISD an adequate education. I'll delay judgment on Mr. Colbert as he has just come aboard, but will note that he is the first superintendent at WOCCISD to not have a doctorate in education. So I guess given the above history, I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Coach Thompson is not at the top of their list as ability and excellence is usually not a standard they use, anyway.
I'm not sure where you are getting your information but it is different from the info that I'm getting. As for the doctorate in education goes, it didn't get us anywhere with the last guy.
Grad you should go meet the guy. He is very personable and easy to talk to. We also have the right guy at the high school. Things are on the right track at WOS. It's a marathon and not a sprint but we appear to be headed in the right direction.
I agree TD, I have not met him, but very close to someone that has. That person said the same you did. He is very open and loves to talk with passion about WOS. I too finally believe the stars are alighning here at WOS. Lets hope its not to late.

Hurts very very bad. i know he was such a great person. i remember when I first met him. I was 13 years old and he came to a Superbowl party in orange(Superbowl was Dallas vs. buffalo SB#28) he was HUGE. I mean dont get me wrong, I was 13 but he was literally HUGE. I have a picture from that day with him picking me up like a rag doll. i was just in awe to be next to an NFL player(Falcons at the time, I believe). Well he talked to me and hung out with all of us. If you didnt know who he was or what he did for a living(Minus his size) you would thought he was just a regular guy. He was great. I remember that day that he was with us shooting a potatoe gun at a trash can. Thats was funny. Anyways, RIP and hope this doesnt happen to anyone else.

Would love to read it. The kid is a great person, and his family is the best too. Someone please find the essay.

***BREAKING NEWS.....Dan Hooks Retiring***
kicker replied to Roughrider's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This topic is going to go viral, I see it on the wall. Once again, Im staying out of this, but will put my 2 cents in. Someone said that we havent been the "scarry" team since 2000, well that is wrong. Just at the last alignment, Hooks couldnt find anyone that wanted to play us. No one wanted to play a team that they thought would give them an L on their record. Now, Friendswood said ok because they were the number 4 team in 4A and what could a little ole 3A team do to them? Well, we beat them up and down the field that night, were just a few plays from winning that game. So please explain the reasoning behind WOS not having the respect we used to have. Thats bogus. Also, as far as the coaching is concerned, I believe that too many people are blowing this out of proportion, we all know that the HC will be a Mustang. Colbert wont go out of our coaching pool. Why would he? We have backups to backups that could be a HC/AD at many schools in the state. IMO, Colbert wants to gain the respect and trust of the WOCCISD tax payers and by bringing in an "outsider' would jeopardize that. It would alienate him and be the exact thing that he doesnt want. Come on guys, be OBJECTIVE, not SUBJECTIVE. Take emotions out of it and look at logic. Anyways, first and last post for me on this topic....yall have fun! ;D -
Time to cut the High School sports programs?
Capacity for The Rig is 9,200.
Ok, then they still probably pull in over a mil. Maybe more. They have playoff games there starting on Thursday nights all the way to Saturday Nights. And then there are multiple games per day. My math is probably flawed, but do you see my point? Alot of money. -
All fine and dandy if they had a QB that could hand it to them without dropping the ball. >:( Seriously, where is this "Super Quarterback" that G. Gilbert was supposed to be. And dont give me that rookie excuse, Colt was a rookie too and we saw where he got them......and it wasnt a losing season. ;)
really all sports do not make money.... football may be the only one that might profit a little money... If you look at the costs (lights, equipment, refs, coaches salary, etc..) they all lose money but it is worth having for the kids...
Well, i dont know. I honestly believe that some schools profit quit a bit off of football. Look at your big HISD schools like Pearland. "The Rig" as it is called in Pearland probably has a capacity of 15k,(im speculating, havent checked), and their games are always capacity during the season. Also, our tickets around here are 5 dollars, and theirs are 8 dollars. So lets say that they have 70% capacity for a home game(or 10,500 people). Thats about 84k at that game. at a minimum of 5 home games per season, and the gate they charge for playoff games(wich ALOT of playoff games are played there)and they probably make over 1mil per season. i could be very wrong, but that is just an uneducated guess. Thats alot of money for 1 sport. Some D1 colleges dont even budget 1mil per season, so see what I mean? Football makes money! -

He respects what WOS football is, and that it HELPS academics. Im sure he will make the right decision. What is the crazy thing here is that this could be the most important decision this new Super. will ever make at this school. crazy huh? IMO this will make him or break him with WOCCISD. I also will say that this decision WILL, not could, but WILL decide the up-coming board elections. Before people get on here and smash me for saying what I have said, lets get real here. Here are the facts: WOS is known around the country for football. Yes, academics are important, but respectfully football is just as or even more important at WOS. Here is why.....if these kids didnt have a no pass/no play clause, the graduation rate would drop dramaticly. Trust me, I know! Of all that I have said, this is really an ACADEMIC decision after all.
You won't find any argument from me, kicker. Some may think this as overly dramatic, but I, too, feel that the decision on the next football coach/athletic director could fundamentally change the course of the WO-C CISD. Fumbling of this decision could do irreparable hard to the district. As to Colbert, I, too , have heard from reliable sources words that leave me a bit wary of his views on how the next football staff at WO-S should look and word from less well placed sources seem to confirm the news. I sincerely hope that I am wrong. But at this point, we both need to keep a close eye on him to ensure that he does make the right position.
Well, like I said, I do not know Mr. Colbert. But, I do know what I have heard and what they say is that he is very hands on with the district. I have also been told that he is going to be a great super.. i feel that he will make the right decision. he was an all state sports player that understands the iportance of athletics with academics. This all leads be to believe that he WILL indeed make the right decision. I will continue to have faith in him untill proven else.

Couple of questions for the informed.... I am new to the OISD(Orangefield) district. My daughter is in Kindergarten this year, and I heard through the vine that there will be a bond coming up for a new "state of the art" highschool at Orangefield. I know they renovated it a few years back, but I believe that this district will be 4A in about 6-10 yrs. Seriously. We had a school function that was just for kinder's and I swear there were more 6yr olds at that thing than LCM has in their whole HS. Seriously. The elementary school in Orangefield has like 5A level enrollment.(Maybe exaggerated, but alot of kids)Well anyway, if this were to happen then there is absolutly NO room for the coming surge in enrollment. In my opinion, why not build a new HS on SH 1442? Plenty of space, and then you wouldnt have to deal with the VERY narrow Hwy 105. Picking up my daughter in the afternoons is like trying to leave a Dallas cowboy football game. Its that bad. I guess what I am trying to say/ask is if there were a bond to build a new HS in OISD, would yall support it, would 1442 be a good place, and do any of yall OISD people see what I see coming in the future?

Beaumont ISD Dosent hve eough money to Make Promises..

One more thing......I saw on here someone commenting about renovating or new. Well, it makes complete sense to build a new one if the bid for renovation is the same, or even a little more, than a brand new one. A brand new one would pay for the difference in the long run by not having to "renovate" it again in the future. -

Ok, I have no dog in this fight, but I am going to submit my opinion, and opinion only, on a hypothetical similarity. Ok, here I go, stay with me.......lol. Say Orangefield, WOS, and LCM all become Orange ISD (would make sense to have one school district with all three schools being approx. 5 miles from each other) and there needs to be renovations to all three fieldhouses and you have allocated an equal "x" amount of money for each. Well IMO I would not be upset if LCM recieved more money than WOS did for their fieldhouse. Reason being that LCM has double the athletes that WOS has and Orangefield has. As a matter of fact, you might be able to combine Ofield and WOS athletes and still not reach LCM. That being said they would need double the lockers, double the bathroom fixtures, etc. See my point. If you built the same size fieldhouse for WOS, half of it wouldnt be used. Money should be per capita or student population. thats just my 2 cents. It would make economic sense also. Then the money you save could be used to make our super the highest paid in the state. lol. -
Just seems like a bad idea. Dont get me wrong, I love the concept, but football is not like slow pitch softball. You dont have to worry about injury as much.(even though Im looking at knee surgury from it) football however is physical and on top of that, 30 and 40 yr olds dont heal like they did when they were 18. trust me, I know from experience. Once again, love the concept, but seems like a bad idea.

Why did West Orange back out on Dayton?
kicker replied to morethanyouknow's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Trust me, Coach hooks and staff are afraid of NO ONE! And he is the last person that would make an excuse. As a matter of fact, excuses are not permitted within the WOS football family. It makes absolute sense to schedule LCM over Dayton. LCM is 5 miles from WOS and if they charged a gate at scrimmages, it would probably surpass a Dayton/WOS regular game. Nothing against Dayton, im a fan of their program, but LCM/WOS is like Dayton/Barbers Hill/Crosby. Its a very anticipated matchup scrimmage or not. not sure how much, but I bet that saved Dayton quite a few dollars they could spend on equipment, etc. I have no knowlege of the fact except for what i have read here, but it seems like Daytons head coach was totally for it. For outsiders here is a fact for you. When you are Dayton or WOS, it is very hard to find preseason opponents. noone wants to play against either team. They dont want an automatic loss before the season starts, so you take what you can get. I remember the last alignment, at the meeting, Coach Hooks and Thompson were trying to find preseason opponents. No one would take them up on their offer. They couldnt find anyone that would play them. So thats why we had to play Friendswood last year (the number 2 or 3 team in 4A in the state at the time) Did coach Hooks want to play them? probably not. Who wants to play a school that has 3 times the enrollment you do? But being that WOS backs down from no one, we played....and should have won. We beat them up and down the field all night just made to many mistakes. When your playing a state champion caliber team, you have to play your A game. 8) -

Man, makes me want to play again. I officially put the cleats in the closet last year with a blown out knee. ACL, MCL tear. :'( Bound to have happened sometime or another. -
??? jealousy. lol. I mean seriously? Makes us WOS fans proud that we are mentioned so much without provocation. just shows how much mental power we have over our opponents even before we take the field. Oh, wait....your not an opponent......well, since you lust for us so much, ill buy you a Tshirt and you can become an honorary Mustang. ;)

We (WOS)always have one come out of nowhere. Should be interesting. This coming season will be different in 21 3A. No teams are really tenured. None really have a whole lot coming back. Could be a toss up for the district finish. I like years where it seems that nothing is a lock. It makes it exciting.
