**BREAKING NEWS..COACH ALVAREZ NAMED NEW ENNIS HC**

Is that customary to break down film during the interview?
WOW! That's hard to believe that the candidates had to analyze film during the interview. That's a scary thought right there on many levels. Assuming that they all know what he was talking about while a candidate was "analyzing" the film, does that mean that the committee members can have "input" during the season? I dunno. Just seems mighty strange to me.
Who on the committee had enough knowledge to actually critique a coaches ability to break down game film?
I dont think it matters anymore. LOL. Just because some people are on a commitee or a school board doesnt mean they cant understand film or havent been coaches in the past. ;) ;D They might have had an outside source breakdown film and do the analysis for them. Would make sense to me. -
To add to my point, here is an example. At WOS there was a stud running back named Kendell Cleveland. To my knowlege, he was offered a few scholarships. (i cant rember if he went to a JUCO first or what), all were D1. He decided to go to LSU. I dont know all the details, nor am speaking for him or his family, but here is my opinion and what I saw. He goes there being probably one of the best running backs in Texas. Well guess what? There was also a little ole running back there that had the last name of Faulk. Kevin Faulk, the younger brother of Marshall Faulk. To this day, I believe that Kendall was better, but because of Kevins last name, he got all the snaps. Reminds me of what happened with Major Applewhite and Chris Sims at Texas. Anyways, that wasnt a good matchup school with Kendall. I honestly believe if he wouldn't have gone to LSU, he would have been a premier runningback at another large school. There are are some older WOS peeps on here that can shed some more light on this story, but this is what I remember. My point?? Kids need to make sure that the school they are going to commit to is a good matchup for them. Big names sometimes doesnt mean big games. ;)
Matt took his visit out to Lubbock and really liked what he saw,Coach Tuberville and Coach Moore really did a good job of recruiting him, also met alot of the players and found some that were just like him, just a better fit for him personally. Thanks for the PM kicker, good to know.
No problem. Didnt mean to stir anything up, just parent to parent talking. like i said, good luck and I cant wait to watch him on Saturdays!! OK, here is a long story cut short and edited. LOL To some that dont understand the recruiting process and are wondering why kids change their mind, or turn down a big school (that would be a no brainer to you or others), to go to a smaller or different one, ther are ALOT of factors that are in play. Im not trying to toot my own horn, but I was one of those kids that was recruited and had multiple options. Some will probably want to shoot me for this, but here is a personal example. I was recruited by a few D1 schools. The one that wanted me the most was TCU. I was so excited about it. I wore TCU shirts to school, tried to learn their tradition, etc. I knew that is where I was going. I just knew. Even the summer before my senior year. I mean, who wouldnt want to go to a school like that. Well, when I took my official visit, things changed. They changed big. At the time, I wanted to play football and baseball. I learned that they only wanted me to play football, I also learned that my "offer" was only partial. When I say partial, my scholarship covered ALOT of money. Funny thing is, what wasnt covered would have been enough money to go to Lamar for 8 years, LOL. TCU is EXPENSIVE. Still I was pondering it. I then learned I would have to redshirt and also be the backup to the Groza award winner from that year. Me being 18 years old and wise (yeah right) I wanted to play my freshman year in college and not be behind anyone else. I then decided to take a ride to a school in Kansas that I could start right off the bat. The school was an NAIA school. Some of you are thinking, what in the world??? D1 to NAIA? Well here is the thing. Its all about matchups. just like a game. Some teams might be a monster, win all their games, are predicted for a state championship, no one has touched them all year (ie. see Brownwood. LOL). But there is always a team that has a better matchup with you. Well with that said, I had the opportunity to start as soon as I got there, there was noone ahead of me, and my head coach was Coach Kazor. He was the special teams and kicking coach for the Chicago Bears under the Ditka years. My goal was to get great instruction, learn how to really kick and to have a shot at the NFL. With what he could offer me, why wouldnt I take it? I had all that at that little school. So see? The matchup with me and the smaller school was better. This is why kids chnge so frequently, and sometimes doesnt make sense to others that dont know why. Anyways, there is one example. It is a big decision for these kids, and some matchups turn out to be better than others. it takes time to uncover them.

Congrats, and good luck coach. Im not sure about others, but he impressed me the way he turned Kirbyville around. Never thought I would see the day that they would beat us. Hes a great coach, with great game plans. you cannot look down on someone that wants to better themselves. I am sorry that K'Ville lost thier coach, but also know that Ennis is getting a good one. -

Yo, snappa head... dat's what she said!!! It's a beautiful thing! Whooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! GOOD LUCK COACH ALVAREZ!
It is indeed a big time job, Dice. He replaces a coach in Sam Harrell that was very successful, highly revered, and has won state championships (2000, 2001, 2004) at Ennis. If Coach Alvarez does take the job, best of luck to him as he will have to hit the ground running.
Sam was Grahm's dad correct? -
kicker: Have you started working with anybody yet? We need to get that tee lined up and gettin' some reps in on that football going through the goalposts since we are back to not having a kicker again. You need to get in that off-season program and get that leg muscled up!
lol. I think Im a little too old for HS. lol. plus, having a torn ACL doesnt help either. I am going to see who we have coming up that can kick. I know Coach rags. asked me to work with a kid that is a freshman this year. Acourding to him, the kid has a leg. Cant wait. I like to mold raw talent. We shall see.
Hopefully this will be the year for a state championship. Good luck WO-S and Coach Hooks. A great football program with a great tradition.
ooh, I wouldnt say that just yet. We have alot of growing to do. We have the talent, we always do, but it takes luck also to play in the big game. Every year our goal is to win state, but we havent in over 20 yrs. At WOS, a district championship is great, but we are looking for a bigger championship. Its funny how if some teams win a district title, or even make the playoffs, that is a successful season. For us, if we dont win state, its a failure season. lol So I guess we have been failing for 23 years.

I posted this on another topic, but maybe this poll is the best way to decide.... Just an idea, but i was going to try and do a kicking camp this summer. I am thinking about getting a few kickers to help me. kickers with experience ie. College, NFL, etc. Dont really want to charge for it except maybe a registration fee that will pay for the shirts that will be given out. The reason I am posting this, is to see if there is intrest in this locally. I would like your feedback, maybe ideas. Im not speaking for all schools in SETX, but im tired of seeing all these Austin area and Dallas area kickers getting all the awards/scholarships. We have plenty of talent here in SETX, just need specialized coaching. I would like to teach mechanics, mental toughness, and strenghth and conditioning, all for the kicking game only. The positions that I would offer at the camp would be placekicking, punting, snapping, and holding. kicking fieldgoals are a three headed monster. you have to have a good snapper, a holder that can adjust, and a kicker with the ability to improvise. All three have to work like a well oilled machine. Same for punting, you need a good snapper, great protection, and a punter that can alter his steps if he has to. These are the subjects I would like to have focused on. I have resourses to get the right coaches and instructors, but would also like volunteers to help. Like I said earlier, I would like yalls feedback on this and see if there would be enough intrest. Thanks
Not a joke ... got a son whose a heck of a soccer player, but we dont have a soccer program at school ... has never kicked a football, but was playing around with friends and kicked it in from about the 30 ... would be interested in sending him to your camp
Thats great! one thing though, soccer kicking and fieldgoal kicking are opposites. just to help your son out, here is a little instruction. On a soccer kick, you put your knee over the ball to keep it low.. This is not what you want to do kicking a fieldgoal. When kicking a fieldgoal, you want your knee behind the ball, and want it "locked". Leg lock is key. you want your leg completely straight on the point of impact, this creates lift. It takes practice, but it is crucial. It will also change where you plant your foot.
I would definately be interested for my son as long as our schedule allows us to be there.
Hey T, yeah he would be on the list for sure. If you would like to help me spear head this thing, please do. i know you have organizational experience, and this is my first rodeo on anything like this. If anyone wants to help me get this thing going, please, please do! One thing though, this is going to be a not for profit event. I am not making a dime off of this. There will be fees, but for shirts and any other items that may need purchase. If we could get some sponsors that would be awesome. Maybe we can try and contact some businesses that would like to help out. like i said, i have never done anything like this, so anyone that wants to team up and help make this a reality, you more than welcome. just PM me and well get the ball rolling. Ive already heard from one person that will be doing some instruction, so that makes two of us instructors so far.

Is 5A really the "BIG" dawgs in Texas?

The majority of the other 4A schools would struggle with the 5A mega schools. Texas football now is all about the subburbs. The inner city dominance is gone from now on! The 5A suburbs will dominate football around Texas for a long time!!
uhh, brenham, friendswood, aledo, mesquite poteet...........just to name a few
All are suburbs except for Brenham, who has to be recruiting or something. They're good in all sports ;D ABSENT is right.
The poteet is not a suburb. The school is only about 5 miles from 635 loop, almost across the street from Mesquite. No where near suburb status. -
The one thing that I would see that you would also need to do is get a LOT of instructors as the type of camp you look to be running would seem to be pretty labor intensive.
Correct. I want a good student teacher ratio. If anyone has any connections i dont have, feel free to pass this idea along to them. The camp being labor intensive is the whole point. I know some parents send their kids to these camps, some can be as much as $3000.00, and all their kid gets is a T shirt and was able to meet some pro guys that flaunt their skills. i dont know about yall, but in this economy every dollar saved could mean keeping your lights on. lol. But anyways, that is the point INSTRUCTIONAL. Example: Someone posted about his sons fieldgoals are not going high enough, well thats a pretty easy fix with the right coach. The higher the follow through, the higher the ball. think of it as a golf shot....if your going to punch the ball, you stop your follow through and the golf ball stays low. If you are looking for a lob or a good wedge shot, you follow through as high as you can to get lift. Also, a drw and a slice would be compared to where your body is pointing to on initial contact of the football, and your ball will go where you follow through goes.the same principles apply in kicking.

Really not sure about alot of details at the momment. I wanted to see what the community thinks. As far as time, it would be in the Summer. im thinking during the week. This would help some parents that have to work to know where their kids are. Im thinking a wednesday through Friday. Age groups would probably start at around 8yrs or 9yrs old for instruction. The meat and potatoes would be 13-18 yrs. olds that need skills immediatly. I will contact some of the AD's and coaches and see what needs to be done, and also if there are any rules or regulations that need to be followed. The last thing I want to happen is to mess a kids UIL eligability up. like i said before, this is all in the infant stages. i believe that starting now is a good time. It gives me 5 or 6 months to figure all this out. I will post more on the subject as things progress. The main thing that I want to focus on is teaching. Not Demonstrating. Kids can get a demonstration watching Monday Night Football. I want these kids to learn the proper technique, be able to hown their skills and fix any problems that may occur on the fly. Thanks for the input, and keep it coming.
I agree there is plenty of undiscoverd talent here. We just spent two days in Dallas at a camp and his "report card" was good except for his follow through and the height on the ball. My only suggestion would be if your going to grade the kickers please have someone there to instruct them on how to correct what they are doing wrong. I would personally support this and help in any way possible. I wish we could have walked away from the camp (which wasn't cheap) and him know what to do to correct his errors.
This is exactly what i am talking about. Back in my day, I went to alot of camps..UT, Notre Dame, etc, and all they did was do a demonstration and let you kick. Im talking about an INSTRUCTIONAL camp. Not one to make money. i would evaluate on the first day, or in the morning if one day and then TEACH the kids proper technique and fix their problems. There is not one camp I know about that does this. They take your money and you kick for three days with NO instruction, just critique. Well, in my opinion, what is the point?? i want to bring a camp to the area that is a step by step process to where at the end of the camp, you are a better kicker, and know what and how to fix flaws. Kicking is like golf, you always have to work on it. But mostly, you have to have the education to be able to trouble shoot if you get into a jamb. My scenario would be a 3 day camp. 1st day is evaluation and technique school. Second day is putting the technique that was taught to work along with the explanation of the mental game that is so important. 3rd day would be to fix any problems and to show the parents/guardians how much better you have become over the camp. This is just a sketch of what I want to do and there will be changes to the plan/ schedule, but this will not be a demonstration camp like all the others. This will be a camp that is like private lessons. Teaching theses kids how it all works, and making them better.

This is great. i am still sick about losing to BR. I honestly think the better team lost that night. Before BR people jump on me, this is my opinion. my opinion only. If Salter would have had more experience, we win hands down. The kid is going to be a good one. you cant teach overcoming adversity, and experience. That is what this kid got this year. He should be able to overcome anything coming at him next year.jmo

One more thing....I would also like feedback about where, when, and opinions about this from our community. Please vote, but also feel free to discuss or throw any ideas my way.
