  1. This was started on the football thread, but I think there are much greater implications on the select (LIKE SOFTBALL) side! UIL may let football coaches run 7-on-7, select sports teams The time could be approaching for high school coaches to decide just how much time they want to spend with their athletes. As part of the annual UIL press conference at the Texas High School Coaches Association Coaches’ School, UIL executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said the organization is studying the possibility of allowing high school coaches to coach non-school teams. That would mean, for example, a high school football coach could coach a seven-on-seven team of his players, or a girls’ basketball coach could coach a select team of players from her program. Breithaupt, who spoke to the media at the Hilton Austin in connection with the conference that brought together more than 12,000 of the state’s high school coaches, said he believes the coaches fall into three categories on the issue of coaching non-school teams. “I think 40 percent would tell you, ‘Let us coach, we’re already having to be there anyway,’ †Breithaupt said. “Some are saying, ‘Enough is enough.’ There’s another group saying, ‘I’d rather us be coaching them than somebody else.’ †High school coaches are allowed to open school facilities for athletes to work out during the summer, as well as coach athletes for up to an hour per school day during the off-season. But Breithaupt pointed out that high school athletes’ participation on teams not associated with the school has increased to the point that events take place just about every day of the year. If high school coaches vote to approve coaching non-school teams, they could be signing up for a never-ending gig. Breithaupt said there are far more questions than answers at this point. “So how far do you go?,†he said. “Should coaches be allowed to coach 12 months? Where does it pick back up? What does that do to the sport?†Though he spoke specifically about the possibility, Breithaupt didn’t offer a target date for athletic directors to vote on a proposal. “It may be a long study,†he said. “We’re not going to get in a hurry. We’re going to spend some time and get this right.†Breithaupt and UIL athletic director Cliff Odenwald addressed a variety of issues during the press conference, including: * A review of the steps the UIL took in reaction to the outbreak of the swine flu in Texas in May. * The results of steroid testing during the last two years. The UIL has revealed that, of 45,000 athletes tested, there have been 19 positive tests and three unresolved cases. Also, the UIL’s steroid testing budget has been cut from $6 million to $2 million, meaning the organization will test fewer students in the next two years. * The decision made by 1A athletic directors to align in two divisions at the next realignment in February. A referendum item is up for vote by 2A athletic directors and 4A athletic directors are set to “revisit†the possibility.
  2. The real impact of this would not be felt so much in football (7 on 7) as it would be in select sports, such as basketball, volleyball and softball. These are "year round" and having HS coaches get involved would cause a lot of problems and frustration among travel ball coaches, parents and players. Just think about the ramifications...could be some ugly situations.
  3. I was a "move-in" my sophomore year...took me about 2 days of 2-a-days to figure it out (after Pete Garner laid the wood to me and then helped me off the ground). But then again, I knew there was something special here, thats why we choose THE HILL. Now I've got two kids who have been here since Kindergarten. There is nothing wrong with "move-ins", they either get a clue quickly or ride the pine. In my humble opinion, move-ins are welcome. Fresh blood is good, but you better respect the tradition and the work ethic or you won't fit in.
  4. MC, If you would change teams more often, you'd have more hats <evil grin>
  5. I've found that 93 octane gasoline and one of those long-handled lighters works best or you can leave it your bait bucket for a couple of days (that at least changes the aroma) ;D I put mine in the dishwasher once and it didnt work out so well.
  6. HillGal swears that Cascade dishwasher powder works best (in the washing machine), even better than oxyclean....seems to work well!
  7. Way to go, Jay! Congrats!
  8. Thanks T, we are pumped. Just trying to be humble about our post-season chances at this point (unlike other recent posts, ha). Reminds me of a quote from Saints' coach: "PLAYOFFS, PLAYOFFS??!!, you're asking me about PLAYOFFS?? I will say based on summer league and certain players' success in AAU this summer, I am REALLY excited. See you at IFA next week?
  9. Dates (2009-2010) October 21 Girls Basketball: First day for practice. October 31 Girls Basketball: 1st day for scrimmages. November 9 Girls Basketball: First day for interschool games.
  10. Having seen GCM face the Hill in other sports throughout this past year, I was impressed with the fan base and the spirit displayed. It looks like they are working hard to build a "tradition". Kinda hard not to root for them ;D Against someone else of course!
  11. Good thought but too many cross-classification games to stagger the roll-out I think
  12. Sorry Pirates, ur right...its a thread for Fireworks. I'd delete it but its already been quoted. Congrats to your DD on her first HR!
  13. Well, not Fireworks, but the Indy in Longmont...Jaiden Rawls, Texas Eclipse 16U (entering freshman at Kelly) hit a 3 run HR against the NC Cardinals yesterday morning.
  14. just a big old thanks to hillman and 99 for setting my priorities. now quit talking smack and come over to huffman and look at a real stadium. ;D hillguy and 99 are two on graveyards this week? No graveyards, but out of timezone way up in the Rockies this week. Oh man does 68 degrees and low humidity feel good!
  15. ??? You point is? The point is that BH suffered the 3rd worst Ike $ damage for a school district. There is more important things to worry about right now than the visitors stands. Its coming, but low on the priority list.
  16. Sorry, but that is baloney, I've been to every BH home game in the last 3 yrs...the only team that ever filled the visitor stands was Dayton...most teams' fans don't travel well. When the visitor stands start filling fully up, we'll consider expanding Sorry Dayton fans...get there early
  17. Keep checking Eteamz.com fastpitch announcements page (select Texas to narrow down)...you WILL find some choices. 6U is kinda crazy, but if you hang with it, you will eventually find a good team...prepare yourself for wild but wonderful ride in the next few years.
  18. Jessie Rodriguez (BH), GT Shockers 14u, hit a scorching line drive three run homer at the ASA "A" championships in Killeen this weekend. Fence was at least 220, not the short temp fences.
  19. Wow, that's high. $2 at BH...but its run by a private entity, not the school
  20. Thanks Slam (an air-conditioned gym seems a long way from from a sun-baked Ford Park, isnt it!)...we have very high hopes. This could be the next state tournament team out of BH within the next 2-3 yrs. Returning will be Senior all-region forward (possibly playing guard this year) Jasmine Carter along with Sophmore 1st team all-district, 6-4 post, Kendall Shaw. Both are playing high level AAU this summer and should return much improved. There are several other major contributors, but these two should account for a LOT of offense and rebounding. The inside game should be dominant, but the speed of the guards will also make for a extremely well-rounded offense and defense. And oh my, the depth....cant wait see what we have.
  21. I know Rashard Lewis plays for Orlando Magic and evidently sponsors a team or teams. I think its something like South Texas or Southeast Texas All-stars, but can't find anything on the web about them. Its a mystery team, lol. Tell us more Slamitgirl....
  22. Dang, I'm almost back to positive karma!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks!
  23. I apologize Aiden1, there is nothing wrong with being proud of your team and you should be. But I put no stock in summer league because most kids have others things on their mind and should. Yes, Woodville is good and I wish them nothing but success. Ditto Bleed...typical summer league situation at BH Monday night. Dayton was supposed play BH but only two players showed up. H-F girls who had just finished a game stayed on to help the two Dayton girls. So it was BH vs. Dayton-Fannett Everyone had a good time, got better at basketball and the score didn't matter.
