  1. When I see people spouting off about high school kids running 4.3's and 4.2's I just laugh. A 4.5 is fast, a 4.4 is unbelievablly fast. Look at the times at the NFL combine, laser timed 40's, and you'll see that very very few people run 4.3's. I don't automatically assume that someone who can run a 10.5 100 meters is a 4.4 forty guy either. Like noted before, good 100 meter runners get faster as the race goes on, to run a 4.4 or 4.3 forty you better be quick out of your stance first of all, then gradually gain speed. A 4.4 forty guy may barely break 11.0 in the 100. There are alot of schools that run about 39 yards and claim its 40, or some coaches have quick fingers on the stop watches. If and when a kid can claim a top 40 time at a combine or summer camp I will believe it, but when I hear a 4.3 forty I take it as a 4.4 or 4.5. I know every now and then you have a freak that can pull it off, but more times than not they are fabricated times.
  2. It would be nice to be able to take WT or Gary Vanya from yall for starters . They both are proven and would be much better hires, if Orangefield can pay enough to lure them away from the lakes. Orangefield is a great school district and a great place to live, and regardless of how late it is they can still sift through the applicants and find someone who is proven, or a great coordinator looking for that first HC job. Kennedy ISD just hired their 4th head coach in 4 years. They have lost 24 straight and won only 2 in 4 years. They still had 51 applicants for the job. Orangefield isn't near that aweful, and the amount of applicants for the Kennedy job should prove that there will be plenty of interest statewide for this job also. It won't surprise me if they "settle" for someone they are familiar with, but I hope they get the best guy for the job regardless of where they are from.
  3. I agree that anyone hired at this point will struggle in 09. You also have to consider the guy running the entire program not just football. But my point is go out and spend more money to hire someone who has established themselves as a successful head coach, or a highly successful coordinator. Get someone proven. They play a russian roulette everytime they hire because they have no idea what they are going to get. Anahuac knew what they were getting when they hired Barbay. Kirbyville knew they were getting a proven winner who won at West Sabing when they hired Alverez. Orangefield has a long history of hiring people with no experience and Smalley would be the least experience of that list.
  4. Smalley would be in way over his head. I like the guy, but dont think you give someone the job just because he has already coached in Orangefield and the kids liked him. The guys is fairly young and inexperienced to be brought in in June, with the responsibility of hiring a complete staff, and running the entire athletic department. It wouldn't surprise me if they did though. Orangefield has a history of hiring people with no experience as a HC/AD, they have a history of hiring people with ties to the program (or alumni), and they have a history of paying piss poor for the position of HC/AD. They like to pay cheap as possible and usually want a "yes" man to bow to the sup., and the school board. Thats why they get inexperienced people, people who just want that first job. And thats why they usually find themselves looking for a head coach every 4 years, because they look for greener pastures and more freedom to run the department they were hired to run without all the influence from the school board and other administrators.
  5. Thanks for your support Dayton!! I entertained the thought of being a coach and following in the footsteps of my dad and uncle, but snapped to it after the thought of babysitting kids all day in the classroom and being underpaid. You have to have lots of patience and thick skin to be a teacher/coach, something I don't have. There's a bunch of good ones out there, esp. some of the ones mentioned, hopefully Orangefield will antee up more money and get one. I highly doubt Alverez will leave Kirbyville to come here, but there are two guys on his staff that would be great hires. WT Johnston and Gary Vanya. But I doubt they will get those guys to leave the lake area with what they pay. Pay about 75K and they might consider.
  6. Correct. You are not going to get a 4a or 5a head coach, but if you get an opportunity to get a 4a or 5a coordinator that has been in a great program, and has learned under a great coach, and wants to become a head coach you might want to consider. HC jobs are hard to come by, especially in June, and if you have a proven coordinator from a Lufkin, North Shore or the likes and he applies, you might get lucky.
  7. No doubt! I have been saying open it up, and get some new blood in here. I now live in the Oranefield school district and I think the situation the district is in regarding a HC/AD, 5 assistants, and 1 trainer in June is far from o.k. Some of the names I have heard thrown around are people that have a connection to the district (former employees, or alumni), go out, spend the money and hire a guy with either head coaching experience, or someone who has been very successful coordinator (WT Johnston), or someone like him. Go to a 4a or 5a school and get a someone who has proven to be successful and has a bright mind. The problem I see is that Orangefield don't want to spend any money and until they do they will possibly have to "settle" on someone, and then lose him 4 years later, like its happened many times before.
  8. Derek Peveto maybe a good choice in a few years, but he is still young and inexperienced. With the situation in Orangefield that would be like getting thrown to the wolves. Its almost summer and someone will have 5 assistants and a trainer to hire. That will be a tough situation to be in, learning on the run, or more like a dead sprint. Open it up state wide and hire the best qualified person out there, not to someone just because they are an alumni or because the school board has a past with them.
  9. Best of luck to him. Wish he would have stayed in state, but he did whats in his best interest. I can already see the comparisons to Pat White, that is if he don't sign else where.
  10. Not only the Peevey kid, but Theriot comes from a coaching family and Farias is very knowledgable. He was a good player at Orangefield and has college playing experience. The only coach staying as far as I know on the varsity staff is Peveto. My only problem with this whole thing is the timing. Morrison was forced out. The school board wanted him gone (at least some of them), and they waited until the last possible minute. They should have done it earlier, maybe around spring break, got a new coach already in place to get familiar with everything, and they could have possibly kept some of the guys that left. They have 6 coaches and a trainer to replace and its nearly June. Not good! They need to find someone with experience, and not find someone who has to learn on the run at the last minute.
  11. I heard that there were several school board members who wanted him out and told him it was in his best interest to look else where. Classis example of the Orangefield school board playing politics and overstepping their influence. If they wanted him out they could have done this much earlier in the spring and possibly kept some other coaches around and have given themselves time to find the best possible guy out there. Its not fair to the kids and definetly not gonna be good for the football program, waiting until the end of school year to search a coach then having him find 5 quality varsity assistants. I just hope they can get someone with some experience and will be willing to pay for a top notch coach.
