Food for thought: If a kid's brother, cousin, dad, and uncle were all studs when they played...can you really fault a coach for giving that kid the benefit of the doubt until they prove they are not cut from the same cloth?

Just for grins, I checked the historical record to see if Curtis Barbay has ever scheduled a 5A team. (Thanks WOS87!) The answer, as expected, was No. You might be surprised how close it was though. Reference 1988 and the first meeting of WOS and Newton. True that was 4A vs. 3A but if you look a little deeper: That 1988 WOS team was only 2 years removed from class 5A, was the defending back-toback 4A champs (they lost to Paris in the finals to fall just short of a 3peat that year), and were less than 1 year removed from defeating the #1 ranked 5A team. The point here is that when this game was scheduled WOS was at the pinnacle of Mustang glory and would likely be considered (and rightly so) to be better than many, if not most 5A teams. As for Newton being 3A then vs 2A now... well, Newton enrollment then: 427*. Newton enrollment now: 426. Does that "prove" Barbay would in fact schedule a 5A team? No, not really. It does not really prove anything at all. It does serve to illustrate that he is not afraid to schedule well above the level of his team though and it seems pretty unlikely that the guy that would schedule that game would be "afraid" to schedule the big, bad EC squads of 2007 and 2008. All in all...I am bored and people here in Austin just don't love the HS football the way SE Texans do. Call it an outlet. * 426 is actually the 1990 number, the closest I could find. -

Just someone amused at the irony of such a hypocritical statement. I am not looking for an internet argument here. -

And I'd fight Ali if I could! Any idiot can make a boast when he knows there's no way he'll ever be required to back it up. Kinda like any idiot can accuse a coaching legend of empty boasts on the internet when they know they don't have to face them and back THAT up? -

LOL. So true. You also better be prepared to hear the answer in brutally honest, unvarnished form. -

The have been good responses, you just reject them because they do not fit with your view of things. You have decided it is fact that Newton was "scared" to play a pre-district game vs. EC the last two years. You have, and will likely continue to, reject any explanation that does not fit in your personal reality. Just because you keep saying it over and over does not make it true. Some points to consider: The only evidence I have seen that EC tried to get Newton on the schedule in the past two years has been your posts on this board. Now maybe they did, I am not saying they did not, just pointing out this is not the common knowledge you think it is. If EC did try to get Newton scheduled again the only evidence to date that the game did not happen because Newton declined is again your posts. Now why are people doubtful that Curtis Barbay was "scared"? Consider the following: The supposition that Newton would be "dodging" EC makes a large assumption that does not hold up under objective consideration. That Newton feels losing a preseason game would somehow harm the team. We know this to be untrue since Newton routinely schedules teams that can, if not should, beat them in the preseason. For the sake of your question, let's assume that EC did try to schedule Newton and that Newton declined. I'll offer you two alternative reasons Barbay might have declined to play EC other than he was "scared". Yes, I am doing this knowing full well that you will reject both out of hand since they do not fit into your personal reality, despite the fact they are far more likely to be true in the reality the rest of us dwell in. 1. Barbay did not want to schedule a team that had a reasonably high chance of meeting Newton in Bi-Disrict. 2. He felt the opponents that Newton did play would improve Newton more than EC could. -
First, a question asked in all seriousness: "Why are some Kirbyville fans so obsessed with the Newton/Carthage games?" Seriously. I'd like to know. Now to answer your question directly: Newton gave up 43 points to Carthage last season for much the same reason Orangefield scored 42 on Kirbyville. Every now and then teams get into shootouts. When both offenses are having success it tends to snowball as the defensive units get tired. The inhernet advantage the offense enjoys (by design) over the defense in ANY matchup is then magnified. Another great recent example would be the epic Jasper/Silsbee game last season. That game, though an instant classic, was not a good indicator of either defense. Sometimes the games just work out the way they do.

To the Newton fans: Be careful with the comments please. EC runs a nice program and does not deserve to be dogged (I don't think that is anyone's intent, but it could be misread) because one crazy fan wants to project his reality into cyberspace. To ECBucFan: You really should have your water/paint/insulation tested. -
I'm pulling for you Kirbyville!

Best Overall Coaching Staff In SE Texas?
Hotrodg replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I'd say Newton and WOS. WOS 240-62-2 over 26 years only 1 sub .500 season Newton 284-86-6 over 32 years only 2 sub .500 seasons Those rate on both state AND national all-time lists. You only enjoy that kind of success over that long of a period with consistent, quality coaching. NO school has talent for 30 consecutive years. Other key indicators: How often do either of those programs lose to teams that are less talented or from a lower classification? Hardly ever. How often do those teams beat teams that are more talented or from a larger classification? Quite often. Both these staffs are the type that will take a team with 5-5 talent and go 10-2. -
Interesting responses here. I don't know that it would be something that would work as a base set but I think it would have potential as a supplemental package for certain situations.
-
The real problem with questions like this is you have to specify criteria. When you say "best" do you mean most successful? Do you consider only performance within same classification? Are we talking about hypothetical head to head play? For example: Many consider the 1983 Daingerfield team to be one of the "best" in history. They were certainly one of the most dominant. (16-0, 14 shutouts, 8 total points allowed, defense was NEVER scored on). But if you lined them up against Converse Judson or Midland Lee (the 83 5A title game participants) do you think they would have won?

I think your picks are reasonable.

Depends on the somebody and what they are saying. For lots of people it is just a show of support.

*Side Question* How long will this thread be by week 10?
-
Newton has had 3* losing (sub .500) seasons under Curtis Barbay. 1979 finished 4-6 1985 finished 5-6 (finished regular season at .500, playoff loss to SFA dropped them below .500 to end the season) 1993 finished 3-7 [Hidden Content]

Neat idea. I don't know that the location matters too much. If someone wanted to do it, I say let em put it where they want. Put it in Sour Lake for all I care.
-
First, WOS is by no stretch of the imagination a "small 3A". But to answer your question: Hurricane Rita + increasingly larger schools around the state moving the enrollment cutoffs for all classes increasingly higher.
-
It is not really accurate to say WOS is a "small 3A". WOS is a pretty average size 3A school. In terms of the current 3A class: WOS ranks #71 out of 180 in size WOS has an enrollment of 691 which is: 40 higher than the 3a average of 651 285 smaller than the largest 3A school and 271 larger than the 2A cutoff
