  1. It will be interesting if some of the coaches who start district Tuesday night rest there aces over the weekend.

There might be some 4a schools lose over the weekend due to the fact District starts. What do you think MIF?

I don't know about whether they'd lose or not but I do think you'll see some front line pitchers throw early this weekend (almost like a 'live' bullpen) so they are ready come Tuesday night.  For example, PNG threw Harrington a complete game on Tues vs. BH.  He may not throw this weekend which leads me to think he will open district against Ozen, with Flores (assuming he is healthy) pitching against LCM on Sat.  Without Harrington, that may not bode well for PNG against very stiff competition in Lufkin.  I think the same is true with Vidor and Nederland.  I doubt Helmke throws very much this weekend as I expect to see him on the hill Tuesday vs. Pirates.  Of course, coaches have their own ideas about these things.  I do think it'll be interesting to watch, tho...

  2. Tuesday night was a 'typical' SE Texas baseball night...some big games, some close games, even a blowout or two...

The marquee game was BC-Silsbee up the road in Silsbee where 2 of the area's best teams matched 2 of the area's best pitchers (Jeff Stringer and Joel Schooling).  The result was predictable -- a low scoring game that fell BC's way 2-1.  This is a huge win for Coach Bryant, especially on the road.  HRs from Willey (BC) and Skinner (Silsbee).  Staying within 21-3A (the only district that has begun district play), there was another great pitching duel that may have been overlooked...HJ vs. HF where HF's Michael Lange threw a 1-hitter...and lost 3-0 to HJ's Aaron Treece.  All Treece did was 1-up Lange by throwing a no-no.  It was a 'must win' for HJ and their playoff hopes but also served notice that HF can play spoiler especially with Lange on the Hill.  Up north, Jasper flexed its muscles with a convincing 10-3 win over OF.

In non-district play, West Brook lived up to their offensive hype, scoring 9 early runs and defeating Vidor 11-1.  It had to be a disappointing loss for the Pirates who had been off to such a fast start...especially since pitching-thin WB threw a kid they called up from their JV team and effectively shut them down.  On a related note, I did get a tour of Vidor's new baseball facility.  It is first rate and Kyle Green deserves kudos for his (and his team's) efforts.  Out west, PNG dealt their ace (Eric Harrington) against BH and escaped with a tight 2-1 win.  Note however that BH did not throw theirs (Ross Hales).  Still, a quality win for the 'up and down' Indians.  Lastly, the 'little engine that could' -- the LCM Bears continued their winning ways with a 5-3 victory over Kelly.  The Bears now sit at 10-1.

The last weekend of tournament play gets underway today.  The biggest local event is probably BC's tourney where the Cards host a large # of 4A teams including Central, Ozen and Lumberton.  Look for the 'high noon' game on Saturday when BC hooks it up with Ozen.  With both teams back in district play on Tuesday, we might not see the front line guys on the hill, tho.  Jasper's tourney also kicks off today and includes LCM and Vidor.  Jasper vs. LCM highlights today's action while the Jasper-Vidor matchup gets underway on Friday.  Nederland travels to 5A Deer Park for their event while PNG is north of us at the Runnels Tournament in Lufkin.  PNG draws two 5A powers in Hou Memorial (Thurs.) and Hou Westside (Sat.).  HJ will be at the BH tournament while West Brook crosses the border to attend the LC Barbe tournament.  Look for the rematch Sat. night when WB plays Barbe altho' I doubt it could be any wilder than last week's 16-14 Bruins' win.

Finally, district play is underway next week for everybody.  If you're trying to decide what games to attend, here are a few that might be worth the trip:

Ozen and PNG play on Tuesday with the Indians turning right around and drawing LCM on Friday.  A huge week for Coach Jay Stone.  Nederland and Vidor clash on Tuesday as well while the HJ-Silsbee game on Friday is the big matchup in 21-3A.  5A West Brook opens with 'new' Atascocita on Tues then takes on long-time power Kingwood on Friday.

As usual, just another typical week here in SE Texas...

  3. This guy is out of line.  He sounds like some of the more "ardent" HJ posters.  LOL.

WB lost to Ozen the only time it mattered.  What would happen IF they played again doesn't matter and is speculation.  Period.  Granted, I think (hope?) that WB would win that game but we'll never know, it doesn't matter, etc.

As far as scrimmages, I doubt that WB is 20 runs better than LCM just like I doubled LCM was 20 runs better than WB last year.  Scrimmages are just that...practice against someone other than your own teammates.  Does not matter.

Actually, it really doesn't matter until district...then it matters !!!!

On behalf of all of the good people associated with West Brook High School, I apologize.

  4.                         R  H  E

    WEST BROOK    11  12  3

    VIDOR                1  5  4

    WP:  Mitchell (4 IP, 0 R, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 2 BB)

    LP:  Robiceaux (5 IP, 9 R, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 4 BB)

Murphy, Lycan, Armstrong, Wallace and Fisher with 2 hits apiece for Bruins.  Ferguson and Fisher with 2 RBI apiece.  Guidry had 2 hits for Pirates (Vidor's only run was unearned).

  5. It would not surprise me (or probably anyone else) to see this district 'log jammed' with some playoff format needed to determine the district playoff representatives.

Personally, I like Nederland to win the district given their pitching depth.  They are the most experienced team and, in my view, the most talented team 1-9.

Next, you gotta give credit to LCM where Griff has taken this year's 'underdog' team and turned it into something real.  I pick them 2nd...although I think district play is very different from tournament play and we stil need to see how LCM's front line pitching holds up against the district's front line pitching.

Third place depends on what side of the bed I wake up on...I can make arguments for (and against) Vidor, Ozen, PNG and Dayton.  The only ones I don't think are in the mix are Lumberton and Central (although the Jags are vastly improved this year).  Only because I think their pitching is better, I'll take Ozen for the 3rd slot.  Lott, Gardiner and James are good enough on the hill to win any district game and I think that gives them an edge...but (as I've said so many times before) I ain't bettin' the farm on it.  I think a lot fortunes will go up and down every Tuesday and Friday night until we find the 3 survivors...

  6. Baytown Sterling (and Lee, for that matter) have always been 'left out' of SE Texas and been more a part of Houston -- although I'm fine if we 'adopt' them.  No question that Sterling is a very legitimate team with 2 very good front line pitchers (Dempsay, sr. who has signed with U. of Houston, and Cervenka, jr.).

Whether we will include them or not...I will yield to the will of the majority.

  7. I find it hard to believe that a team that has won district, won region and made it to the state tournament the past 2 years could be labelled 'choker'.  If losing in the state semifinals makes you a 'choker', then most teams would no doubt love that label, and would love that opportunity.

As far as this year, the consensus would be (in no particular order) BC, Silsbee and Jasper in the top 3 slots.  HJ could make some noise here and last year taught us to never 'disrespect' HF.  If I had to bet the proverbial farm, I'd take BC, Silsbee and Jasper as my playoff teams here...fortunately, I don't have to make that bet, just a guess.

Good luck to all as they open district play this week.

  8. Some nominations for this week's award:

    1.  Mark Serna (West Brook) -- The senior OF went 13-23 (.565) with 5 2B and 1 HR and 14 RBI.  He also scored 7 runs.  That's right ... 13 hits this week alone and 14 RBIs this week alone.  Remarkable production.

    2.  Todd Wallace (West Brook) -- the junior C/RHP went 8-12 (.667) with 4 2B and 1 HR with 5 RBI.  He also won a game on the mound for the Bruins.

    3.  Johnny Dishon (Bridge City) -- the senior OF went yard 3 times this week, including a grand slam.

    4.  Jeff Stringer (Bridge City) -- the senior LHP no hit the previous #1 Nederland Bulldogs in their own park.  Flashing an upper 80s fastball and very hard breaking pitch, he was, in fact, unhittable.

I am sure there were other very good performances over the past week; however, these guys excelled.  Best of luck to all this coming week.
