  1. Update on the games last night at Nederland:

There was a wealth of good pitching last night, the kind that will create a buzz in recruiting and scouting circles:

LHP Angelle (BC) dominated Nederland, allowing 2 hits. His fastball was consistent at 84-86, touching 87 two or three times. His curveball was outstanding. RHP Smith (Ned) was a tough luck loser to Sulphur (3-1) but his 'game' fastball has touched 90 and lives in the mid- to upper-80s, and impressed with his slurve. The real surprise was RHP Jonathan Conrad (Sul) who outdueled Smith in Game 1. Conrad was fairly consistent in the 88-90 range and showed a nice curve ball. His velocity has improved tremondously over the summer/fall and he has become a legitimate D1 player.

All in all, very good pitching last night in Mid County.

  3. Normally you can slide a BC' date=' LCM, or Jasper stud in the mix for Player of the Week. Not this week, Eric Neal of (HF) tore the cover off the ball in the LCM tournament and was easily the star-studded player. As an Outfielder, he played the position well with outfield assists, but his performance at the plate was none other. Pay close attention with these guys. They helped contribute to a historic 2004 year with the leadership of trio Lance Elizondo, Barrett Law, and Matt Hebert.[/quote']

I am sure the "non studs' at Nederland, West Brook, PNG, etc. appreciate that....

  4. When the 'new' list comes out, I would expect a greater number of SE Texas and Greater Houston area kids on that list.

For example, I think Eric Eiland (an area code guy) from Houston Lamar will be there as will David Alleman (OF -- Woodlands). I also expect to see Johnny Dishon (BC) on the list -- he was in the Top 100 2 years ago but got left off this year for reasons that remain 'unknown'. You will probably see David Murphy (3B West Brook) on the new list and perhaps Jake Rowell from LCM or Brandon Riley (INF -- Woodville) will be there. A darkhorse for next year could be Jeff Stringer (LHP -- BC). He just hasn't been seen much due to the duo of Angelle and Haymon. He threw very well last weekend at the Kelly Tourney.

In the 2008 (soph) class, Hunter Cervenka (Baytown Sterling) will be ranked high. You will also probably see Casey Jackson (C - BC) and maybe Eric Harrington or Jn Carnahan (both PNG). Todd Wallace and Thad Lycan (both WB) are also possiblities.

I agree -- there is a lot of talent over here baseball-wise.

  5. Here is 2005 list from Baseball America Top 300 (nationally0 for class of 2007 (the new list is supposed to be out in a few weeks but it wouldn't be the first time it was late):

#068 Kevin Aherns SS/PHP Houston Memorial

    #103 Drake Britton LHP Tomball

#134 Ross Bruns LHP/OF Cy Falls

#230 Thomas Rooke LHP Oak Ridge

    #236 Andrew Moore OF Bellaire

#238 Tim Ferguson INF West Brook

#242 Bobby Armstrong OF West Brook

    #246 Reilly Mercurio 1B/OF Bellaire

#282 Mark Serna LHP/OF West Brook

    #285 Matt West 2B Bellaire

#295 David Prahm INF Clear Brook

    6 RBI

    5 Runs

    1 2B

    1 HR

    David Murphy

    W 1 L 0 (7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 5 K) -- complete game win vs. RR Westwood

    Josiah Svoboda

    W 1 L 0 (7 1/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 6 K) -- 3 appearances incl. win vs. Temple

All of these guys performed exceptionally well and are deserving of credit.

  7. West Brook promises to deliver a first-rate tournament this weekend including national power Lake Charles Barbe (ranked #40 by Baseball America) as well as PNG, Brazoswood and Lufkin.

Check the schedule and come see some very good teams and very good players (both locally and nationally) at this event. There are probably ten individuals ranked by Baseball America as the best in the country. It is worth the time. These include (amng the seniors) SS Josh Prince (Barbe HS -- Texas signee and ranked #72) and P Zach Harwood (PNG -- Rice signee and ranked #101). It also includes, from the junior class, INF Carmen Angellini (Barbe and ranked #62) and the trio of West Brook stalwarts (Tim Ferguson, BJ Armstrong and Mark Serna). That says nothing of the wealth of talent that WILL be ranked one day.

  8. I think the first consideration is who/how much both teams throw their aces? Will Hudson throw Belt? all 7 innings? Same for Jasper with Alvis? The point of this game is how well the two teams play in a high profile game. I like Jasper if both throw their aces. Remember, Jasper played LCM toe to toe with Ehlert vs. Alvis this weekend. Either way, should be a heckuva game.

  9. SATURDAY:

West Brook plays only 1 game due to weather (cold, wet, windy) and loses to a very good Highland Park team, 3-2. Bruins held to 4 hits while allowing only 5:

    Highland Park 0 0 2 1 0 0 0 = 3 5 0

    West Brook 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 = 2 4 1

    WP: Walker (7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 6 K, 1 BB)

    LP: Serna (4 IP, 3H, 3 R (1ER), 4 K, 3 BB)

    Doubt (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 K, 0 BB)

    Svoboda (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 1 BB)

    Serna: 1-2, 1 RBI

    Falgout: 1-3

    Ferguson: 1-3

    Armstrong: 1-3

Bruins go 3-1-1 in Round Rock (season record 4-1-1) and return home to host West Brook Classic this weekend.
