This is such a controversial topic I would love to hear everyone's opinions. First question is what is a big lead? I never blame a coach for playing guys if a game is within 20 points or so. When it is 30 is when I wonder to myself. Before you say oh yeah your from HJ we know what your opinion will be, hold on. I played on an HJ team in 1998 and we were 4A for 2 years and we were totally out manned. We were beat by 50 or 60 at Silsbee and I never had a problem with it then and I don't now. The only time I ever have a problem with coaches playing starters in the 4th quarter is if there is less than 2 minutes left and you are up 20 plus or up 30 plus going in to the 4th and you press. With that said you have coaches who love to press to work on the specifics of it. Then there is another school of thought. When you put the backups in do you expect those guys to not press or play the hard defense they do every day in practice. They deserve to be able to go in there, work hard, and make plays. I know the team out of Houston caught all kinds of heck a couple of years back for this and I never had a problem with. I think intensity is a mentality and the second you let up your players may quit buying in to it. I guess my bottom line is I never have a problem with continuing to play hard in the 4th quarter.
The problem is, keeping the players intensity up when they are ahead by 50. When the alley-oops start flying and stuff like that, then your players are starting to lose their focus. At that point you yank them out and let other players get their time in, because bad habits start forming.
Awesome win for the Horns! To come back from 20 points is something very rare and something to be really proud of. The Horns finally started taking care of the ball and taking advantage of West Orange turnovers about midway through the 3rd quarter and crawled their way back into it. Something people might disagree with but last night proved it in my eyes, a dunk can change a game and when Malveaux put down that huge 2 handed dunk im pretty sure that sealed it up for HF the momentum was all in the Horns favor after that and had everyone in the gym fired up. Once again congrats Horns and awesome job Coach Neal keep up the good work.
You can tell there is a different attitude at HF. If the old Horns were down by 16 at half, it would have been quite easy to just lay down and give up. But winners don't do that. They figure out what needs fixin', then they go out and fix it. And sometimes they come back from 16 point deficits and win games! Good job again, Horns!
I guess you are right. They could have quit and got beat by 60, but they didn't. Not everyone is in the best situation and as gifted athletically and basketball wise. How does a kid respond in a tough situation says a lot about them. Don't belittle them for trying til the end even though they were losing.
I was impressed with the Orangefield players as well when they played against HJ last week. The kids showed a lot of heart and they never let the little things keep them from focusing on the game. There were a few calls during the game that I would classify under "home-cooking" and the players didn't lose their temper. This can happen all too easily when you are down 40 points and you think that the referees are still against you.
I'm thinking HJ 119 Bridge City 32
Bridge City will try and stall as long as possible. If it's like last year, they will manage about 10 passes each time they manage to get the ball across court before they have a turnover. At some point in the 3rd quarter, the players will get tired of stalling and they will begin to ignore the coach and start launching 3's. Its not very pretty.
Perhaps the HJ dunk was less than a 5 on a 1-10 scale, so the news cameras missed it!!! ;D
Wrong. Sean's dunk was right in front of the camera on Channel 6 (I believe) right before they ended the segment. I think they wanted to save the best for last! -

I'm going to go out on a ledge and predict that HJ goes on a late run and wins by 32!!! ;) -
Silsbee fans rush over to HJ fans. Notice how the ref at the bottom of screen, in front if HJ's fans, Celebrate the buzzer beater then sprints off the court. [Hidden Content]
Dude, get over it. We lost and the Silsbee fans celebrated. Good for them! I'd have been celebrating, too, if I was there and we beat Silsbee in a similar fashion. I remember the last second put-in by Jacoby Turner against Navasota in 2007-08 season and we probably looked just like that crowd in the video. It is time for the HJ fans to step up and admit that Silsbee won a great game (I know some of ya'll have already done that!) and know that we will be prepared to beat them down in Sour Lake and hopefully get a chance to beat them down again in Hunstville! But until then, we need to accept the fact that Silsbee did us in the other night.

He stated they were big and used their size very well. But he also followed up with the statement that he thought HJ and Silsbee would beat them if they met in the playoffs. HJ and Silsbee would cause Royal problems with their pressure and speed.
All about the match ups
so true. i spanked blue dove at ping pong last month, even though he had a large height advantage on me.
That's because you had been playing tougher ping pong players than he had before the two of you met. C'mon guys! You should have put Nash, LAZEEK, & POPPA in the game. There is just no excuse >:(
If the other team is incapable of scoring (aka 2nd quarter) are you supposed to just hold the ball for an entire half? Silsbee-HJ--All you need to know
FanintheStands replied to setxbbfan's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
All of this talk has led me to the conclusion that all you need to know is: you can forget about the 12-6 or 27-0 they mean nothing now. The thing that does matter is that the Tigers have the perfect record now, when it matters, and for now they are the ones every team in the district will be gunning for. And I know HJ will be even more focused in a couple weeks. So Tigers keep working and keep focused, don't ease off the pedal between now and then or at any time after.
Although the undefeated record in district is much more important than an undefeated pre-season, the undefeated play-off run is what both teams are gunning for, eh?
