You can't spell basketball with a foot, I hear programs everyday complain that they don't have their kids to work with even during the season becasue they are doing offseason football so its not just HF. You can have a team that noone plays football but until you are varsity you are still going to do football workouts. Guess where thats decided at??? Show me a basketball coach who does not want the time in athletics to work with their sport, especially during the season. That decision is dicated by one person the AD. Guess what the AD coaches, football. So, what do you think the answer will be. Football prep is the most important event, even if your kids do not play football. Then of course you have weight maxing on basketball game days for your sub varsity guys. Do you think that they max out of football game day? Of course not. It will not change as long as there are not seperate AD/Football coaches no mater how much of a stink parents raise. Welcome to football land!
But is that truly the problem? This year, HJ's basketball team starts three footballers - Jacoby Turner, Garrett Gustafson, and Blake Venable. Trey Burrell was also a football player from last year's team. Silsbee's top scorer, Pheal Hill, was a football player as well. I think they may have one or two other starters who played football. Are they the exception, or the norm?

Hamshire Fannett Basketball Program

Start at the beginning. Two Words - "Little Dribblers". Make that five words - "A Good Little Dribbler Program". It's not the whole enchilada, but its the strong foundation that you've got to build on. -

But, as soon as the play-offs come, things change. I think its because the local teams are used to the press and spend more time preparing for it. As soon as you get out of this area, some teams act like they've never seen a full court press before. That also builds the confidence of the Hawks which makes them more aggressive on the press.
The "older gentleman" that is on the bench is Coach Collins who has coached at the middle school for the past 15 years both boys and girls. He has been assisting the Varsity staff of both for quite awhile now. He also played for Travis' dad in the late 70's in Silsbee.
Thanks for the update. I'm glad I can now put faces with names. I knew Coach Williams was a legend around here, so I mistakenly assumed it was that guy. Again, no slights were intended for anybody concerned. BTW, why did you put "older gentleman" in quotes? How would you have differentiated him from the other assistants?
Man, I can't tell if you are pulling my leg or not!! That coach is Travis Williams - are you sincere in saying that you didn't know who he is? Well, no matter on that and you are right about Pheal's grades. I thought maybe you had some other information. Sorry about the over reaction. 8)
No, I'm not pulling any legs. I was always confused with Silsbee. I thought Travis Williams was the older gentleman that is always on their bench. I liked the Coach that I talked to (who I now know is Mr. Williams). He was very friendly and easy to talk to, and really concerned about his kids and their futures. Good man. We don't always have that in the coaching field.

I personally think this is Silsbees best team in the last 5 years. The only question remains is can they avoid a let down somewhere in the playoffs for an entire game. Every team has a letdown during a game but if you want to win a state championship you have to recover in game. They have had a letdown GAME every year. They definitely have the tools. If the don't get to cocky(like DC Stallworth did a couple of times last night) and stay humble I would consider them a favorite. But I hope my hawks are able to knock them off at some point but I just do not see it. Silsbee is as complete as they have every been with athletes and BASKETBALL players.
This is true... IF Hill comes back.
What do you mean "IF?" You know something that I don't?
No, the more you talk to me, the more you find that I know NOTHING. But, I was talking to the Silsbee coach after the game, I don't know his name but he's the bald one that's very animated during the game, and he was telling me that Hill has to get his grades back up in order to return. ... Not just to play basketball again, but if he wants to go to college.
2nd half. Silsbee outscored OF 29-9 in the second half.
I didn't think Silsbee COULD slow it down. HJ seems to stumble when they do that. They have exhibited more patience this year and much better passing, but not when they do a deliberate stall. That could just be my opinion, however.

Hardin-Jefferson and Silsbee boys eager to play
FanintheStands replied to AggiesAreWe's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This game has become an incredible rivalry. What's so great about it is, no one has been able to dominate the other. I mean, these district games almost seem to be a warmup for the Regional Finals. Of course, Cleveland may have a say in the matter this year......... -

Buna, in the 60's would dominate every team mentioned!!!! As a 1A school, they would warm up by beating French and BCP!!! They would dominate teams and win by staggering scores like 12-8, 10-6 and all. Of course, few people could stay awake to witness this mastery of the game, but Buna did have the record for most state titles... .until Snook took it over.
Different kind of basketball!!! Buna would not have a chance!
Perhaps my sarcasm is too subtle? -
Sounds like the Hawkettes are saying it was more of what hj didn't do, instead of what Wos did too...
No, I think its that classic combination of a) WOS putting their best game forward b) the Hawks not playing up to the level that they can ... leading to a potential Trap Game. With all that said, HJ had better play a better game when they travel to West Orange, or else there's going to be a different result.
1 thing that Swag knows for sure is that the Coaches won't be out there playing. Silsbee is better on paper. That's better Players and Coaches. This is my opinion and I'm entitled to 1. But you may be right Hawkette. Hj should win because not only do they have the best PG, big man and "Shooter" they also have the best coaches. Wow, Silsbee don't have a chance against these Hawks. Their Just the best! ;-)
Once you get past the comments and opinions of a select few, Swag, you gotta realize that over the years, Silsbee has had a more athletic team. They've had the advantage in height and jumping ability. They've always had the shooters to rival the Hawks, as well. With all that said, the Hawks consistently hang with the Tigers. How is this so, brother?
