1.
Great article. This team has put in hard work to become the team they are today. They have set out on a mission to be the best and won't let people who don't know their story tear them down. If this team continues to show character off the court and ethics to work hard on the court, they deserve to win, and win by as much as they want to.
I second that.  Although I wouldn't run up the score like Yates did, that's my business.  The Coach's focus on the kids' futures and the accolades they got for their behavior (I'm assuming that was true because I have no reason to disbelieve it) is refreshing.  And if a team can land seven athletic scholarships, that's unbelievable! Kudos to the Coach!
 2.
I've seen them this season. I don't think it's the "awe, I've never seen a team like this," I think it's more of how they are winning. I've seen plenty of teams that would beat them. The undefeated Milby team was brought in by Jim Barton and I for our Playoff Preview at the Montagne. They were very, very nervous about that game. Of course Region 3 won several state titles that year, Milby, Kountze and Houston Jones, led by Daniel Gibson. We had them in the year before!
Ya'll got it all wrong. Buna, in the 60's would dominate every team mentioned!!!!  As a 1A school, they would warm up by beating French and BCP!!!  They would dominate teams and win by staggering scores like 12-8, 10-6 and all. Of course, few people could stay awake to witness this mastery of the game, but Buna did have the record for most state titles... .until Snook took it over.
 3.
It seems that Kelton Gaines has helped out with the loss of Hill Another person to mention is X Harris If one of those starting 5 get hurt look for X Harris to come in off the bench and make some points Even without Hill this should be an exciting game (If the avg was .5 or higher I rounded it up)
If I were Silsbee, I would be less worried about the loss of Hill's 20 points (Silsbee has a benchful of players who can fill that bill) and worry more about the defensive that Pheal could have put on Turner or Gus.  He is a beast on defense and can take his man out of the offense. That's the true value of Hill.  His point output and leadership are simply icing on the cake.
 4. BlueDove, thanks for sharing that with us. Good Luck, Stormy!
 5.

Who starts for Hj? If that sophomore isn't on the court at the beginning of the game then Silsbee is gonna jump all on Hj early. Hj starting 5 is too weak and small for Silsbee. Silsbee goes on a 10-0 run untill the subs come in.
I will admit that Silsbee will give HJ alot more match-up problems than Kountze ever could. Kountze had several 10 point runs during the last game against HJ only to have HJ put 10 point runs right back at them. Silsbee is too good to think you can overcome that several times in one game. HJ loses their post in the Kountze game with 4 min left in the 4th quarter and it made absolutely no difference in the outcome of the game. That would not be the case in the Silsbee game. They will find a way to take advantage of the situation. For HJ to win they will need to be better than either game they played against Kountze.
Those 10 points runs have gone on for the past 3 (or more) years between these two teams.  Silsbee busted out 18-0 in the Regional Finals in 2008, only to have HJ come back and take a 6 point lead, before Silsbee rallied and one by 10 (or more).   That's what determines where your guts are - how you handle the 10 point runs.  For instance, the 21-6 point opening that Kountze had against HJ could have caused a lesser team to roll over and give up.  I'll admit, some of the fans in Sour Lake thought that (my wife was one of them).  But Sutherland has taught those players to never-say-die.  Back in 2007, during their State Run, HJ had to overcome a double-digit deficit in all 6 of their play-off games.  The average deficit was 14 points.   HJ will need to overcome one or two of those 10 point runs this Friday Night in order to win.
Turner, Ricossa, Gustafson, Sutherland, and either Venable or Prudomme (the sophomore you're talking about).  You're right, though, Prudomme will need to be at his best tonight.  The problem is, he can be a double-edged sword out there on the court.  Dude is gonna be a HUGE part of HJ's future, however.
 7. The District Runner Up has gone farther in the last two years as well.  (Although they were officially co-district champs in 2008, HJ won the tie-breaker game at the Montagne Center). But yes, that is an interesting fun fact.  Of course, it and $4.50 will get you a Mocha Latte at Starbucks!  ;)
 8.
Well, ok.  IIIIIIIII really can't give that hypothesis much backing, but that is your opinion.  Why is it that in most losses the losing team didn't play well.  Maybe we should say they got outplayed.  That's what happens in that situation, I don't think you should discredit another teams win by making an excuse like the other team didn't play well.  We all know the consequence of not playing well is............losing.  There is no asterisk by that loss on the record book, just says loss.
Oh, I agree.  A loss is a loss.  But I saw Texas A&M last week against Colorado.  A&M out-played Colorado in every facet of the game...... except they couldn't hit the open 3.  If you've watched A&M this year, you'll know that they are a decent to good 3-point shooting team.  But I saw the guard repeatedly drive the lane drawing all the defense to him and then pass it to the wide open shooter outside the 3 point line.  And I saw them miss the open shot repeatedly.  A&M probably hit 3-20 from outside the line all night.  That's the ONLY reason a 3 point Aggie win wasn't a 20 point win.  You can't chalk it up to the Colorado defense, because it was very porous. Now that being said, that is not always the case.  A good defense can make a good offense look bad.  I just don't feel that NW's defense was the only reason that HJ looked bad at the EC matchup.  You're right though, these are only opinions and neither of us can prove the other one is wrong. But let me bring up another scenario to you.  If you watch the NBA playoffs, you'll often see one team lose a game by 20+ points only to come back and win the next game on the same court against the same team by 20+ points.  Sometimes you just don't show up to play?  Or did that team get that much better in one game?
I second that emotion.  New Waverly is no pushover, but Kountze can take them with their "A game". HJ had to use a superhuman effort to beat Kountze in their home gym, and everyone knows they played poorly against NW.  Only part of that poor play was due to NW's defense. Given that, Kountze cannot look at this game as a warmup for Austin either.  If they look past NW, they will get smoked.
What was the other part due to?  Lets not say Missing players because NW was missing two.
The other part was due to just poor play.... period. Sometimes your team is up and ready to play.  Sometimes they are not.  It's this one intangible that makes these games so unpredictable sometimes. For exhibit A), I give you the Minnesota Vikings...... They had their A game against Dallas making no mistakes.  Against the saints they had 5 turnovers.  Now part of that was because the Saints were everywhere on defense, but part of that was simply the Vikings fault.  The same could be said about the Cowboys in their games against Philadelphia and Minnesota.
 10.
well said fans....how did your hawks do against WOS
We almost lost (2 point game).  I think HJ was caught in a trap game looking to the Silsbee game. The problem is, WOS is a physical team, much like Silsbee is.  If it was the physical play that knocked us off our game, then we are in trouble Friday night.  We'll see.
 11.
I welcome comments from all who saw the game, especially Silsbee fans.
Wow! Was I just "Swagged"?  And were the "Sprinkles" with it?

So yeah, "Bring on Yates!!!!"
Yates is up by 10 before the game begins........hmmm
I agree.  But I recall the Giants not having a chance against the Patriots.  The Jets didn't belong on the same field with the '69 Colts. There is always a "David" out there waiting to slay a "Goliath".  Chances are slim, but the stone sometimes does hit the mark.  But you've GOT TO BELIEVE that you'll hit it when the chance comes.

 14. I assume McEnally is number 35 for Bridge City. That guy has a good shot and great shooting range for a tall kid.  Good game Cards!
 15. HJ will step up.  They know what this game means and they will rise to the occasion.  Silsbee will be missing Mr. Hill. HJ 68 Silsbee 64

 17.
Aggie, on a serious note here, last night was my first time really watching HF varsity play a real good team and probably the first full game I've ever seen them play. I'm curious about what analysis do you have about the HF team? I mean, whats missing with this team?
I know I'm not AAW, but when they played HJ they lacked in a lot of the team fundamentals.  They could dribble and sometimes shoot, but there was no cohesiveness. Blocking out? No. Able to break the press?  No. Any type of designed offensive plays?  No.
 18.

props go to Sean Weldon for stepping up big at the end of the 2nd quarter.
he sure did!  he came in and made two big plays in about 30 seconds!
That's about the 2nd or 3rd time that Sean has done this.  He's incredible, because you'd never see it in him if you watched him.
 19. How is Gus doing?  What happened to him? As everyone in the gym probably realizes by now, that team is really hurting when Garrett is not running the team.
 20.
Definitely think the Hawks will be looking ahead towards Silsbee on Friday night just a little bit...........HJ wins this one 62-49!!!!!
I'm hoping Coach S. doesn't let them.  This could easily be a trap game.
 21.

How long does it take to get football kids in a basketball rhythm?  How much of an advantage does the non-football or few football teams have.   I think there is a definite advantage.  Football kids rarely have a chance to rest there bodies after season.  They start the day after football ends and have to go right into another season.  Sure it is done year after year by most but can you imagine the fatigue?  Basketball conditioning is alot different from football not to mention the pounding a kid that plays in the backfield would take.
And don't forget about track afterwards.
Or Baseball..... I mean, it takes weeks for your metabolism to slow down enough to sit in the outfield waiting for a fly ball!
 22.

Too bad you won't be seeing a full strength Silsbee team. Tigers minus a couple of players. :(
Then HF has a chance tonight, right?
Don't kid yourself. The only thing worth betting on in this game is how long the starters will have to stay in the game, if HF plays anywhere nearly as poor as they played last week.
 23.
HJ also has some players that had to adjust to the varsity level since some of them were young. and if those games you went to were towards the beginning/mid part of the season that could be one reason. HJ will hold their own tonight and pull out the win. Good luck to them.
I think they finally found their "recipe for disaster" on the press.  That was one of the biggest things lacking this year, when compared to years past.  With the press shored up, they can return to their patented "32 minutes of H3LL". I say "patented", because I used to run up against that very same gauntlet when we played the Hawks, and that was, like, 82 years ago.
 24.
You so use to the "shooter" not hitting 3's that you can't remember when he do. That was great humiliation!!
No, I'm used to Grayson hit 4-5 3's a game.  So when he only hits 1, it's like an off night.  Although it was easy to remember all the misses at the first game against Kountze.  We could have made a bar-b-q pit with all the bricks thrown up that night. Besides, as I mentioned, we had about 5 others hitting three's, so it was easy to lose count, if you know what I mean.
