HJ staff has been far superior to the other staffs in the district and their records speak for themselves. Some teams are pleased with a District Title, but some have higher expectations and goals!!!
This is the crap im talking about!! All the credit goes to the "Superior Staff" and their record over the years. What about those Superior Players. Two 3a players of the years, 6 straight years of having Two 1st team all-staters at the same time. Besides, Hj staff hasn't been far superior then other staffs because Silsbee and Kountze pretty much have the same resume. I give a slight edge to the Kountze Lions since someone is judging this on District Titles, Regional Championships, and State Championships. Phil Jackson coached Michael, Scottie, Shaq and Kobe. Hj Superior Staff has been blessed to have the opportunity to coach those players with those accolades. Get the picture ;) This is gonna go on for another 6 yrs because Hj has 2 more All-State players from across those tracks. After that, The Well Runs dry. Bosha is the last of the Mohicans ;D ;D ;D I Guaranteeeeeee Itttttt!! Yesssssss
Your guarantees SUCK!!! Don't think anyone will be taking stock in ANYTHING you say after you last "wait and see" comment. Also, remember that if you ask the coaches they will give all the credit to the kids. These are other people talking about the coaches. Remember this though........since Sutherland left Kountze........they have not beaten HJ. By the way, Kountze's talent was superior to HJ's this past year. That is a fact!

Why would you want to bet against any young mans desire to improve himself? It wasn't Devin on here pumping himself up about where he was going, it was a poster on the board. Bet against the poster, and who is the next victim to be blown up on any message board, not just this one.
I am clearly talking to the poster and not Devin. He lead Blinn JC and Central Missouri prior to taking over for the BearKats; one a juco and the other DII. He definitely didin't make a "splash" around here.
I do not think Fritz was a "sexy pick", but unlike Woodard - he's got plenty of experience at the top two level of NCAA football. He spent several years as a Division I assistant and plenty more as a Division II head coach. His JUCO head coaching stint is just "bonus". Woodard has not coached at the Division I level, if I read his bio correctly. Nor has he coached at the Division II level. His experience is JUCO football (albeit not long) and as an assistant in two leagues - NFLE and Arena Football - that do not exist. Yes, Arena Football came back as af1 or whatever, but it's not the same league.
You think you know FCS football and you probably do know more than most but your logic about our transfers and entering the SLC in year two are your opinion and are not based on facts. You can make an arguement either way about the direction the program is going. I guess we'll all know about Ray Woodard by year three or four. You got to give the man at least that long for a startup program.
FACT - No start-up in the last 5-10 years has entered a full-scholarship Division I FCS league in its first two years. Please look at the clocks for Southeastern Louisiana, Old Dominion, Georgia State, etc. Going back further, I am sure the same exists. So, I guess that is an accurate assessment of your program and fact-based. I'm just going off experience there. As it relates to transfers, you are right. Tough to tell. I'm thinking that there are plenty to be had because a) Lamar needs to be competitive to retain interest in the program, b) a lot of SETX boys wanted to return home or c) all Woodard knows is the JUCO level and it was easier to load up on players from the TX JCs. Either way, we'll know if Woodard was the right or wrong hire in the next few years. Will he outshine fellow upstart coaches? Or will he go the way of Dom Capers for you Houston Texans fans?
Sorry short on time so I'll make it quick. RW was an assistant at ULL. I believe they are FBS school. What is wrong with doing something different than Southeastern Louisiana, Old Dominion, Georgia State and other startup programs. If Lamar struggles in the next 3-4 years you can say I told you so, right?
Not quite understanding why taking transfers is a bad thing when you start up a program. There is ONE way to take kids away from McNeese, SFA, and Sam and that is to win. Lamar eventually has to get recruits that would have gone to those programs and transfers from D1 schools are what make the difference in a .500 year and a playoff year. You should know about that terror(Dustin Long and Rhett Bomar)!
The things that you do in universal offseason are not harmful to the athletes. It is harmful to basketball because that 50-60 minutes a day is not working on skills that you must now rely on a 14-18 year old kid to do on his own. Even if you open the gym, the coach can not go in there and put him through drills and make him work on individual skills or even team skills that could be done during the period. A player is more likely to go into a weightroom on his own and go through a weight workout than go do dribbling, ball handling, or shooting drills in the gym on his own. So to answer the poll question again. Universal offseason IS harmful to basketball by taking that time OUT of the coaches hands to work on things he thinks they need to work on.
You also can't get 10 kids practicing together "on their own". That is the reason it is so valuable. It is another hour of practice. I remember that we used our athletic period in high school during the season to put in bounds plays in, shoot free throws, or work on some other skill. Then at practice you could input those things in to real game situations or whatever you had for that day. -

I am gonna give an example that I have given several times. Kenyon Spears- 3 time all state. Averaged 28 points and 13 rebounds and just under 10 asst his senior year. Almost a triple double which is unheard of. 6'3 and perfect build and combination of athleticism and basketball savy to be a college basketball player. Had full scholarships to three southland schools but held out for offers from bigger schools. Never got those offers so he Ended up walking on at Lamar and having a nice career there. He is one of the all time leaders in 3 point shooting and maybe one other statistical category. My point is this is arguably the best player to ever where an HJ uniform and one of the top 10 3A players to EVER come from this area and look what he did. People just need to realize besides a few exceptions the great 3A players here are a dime a dozen in Houston.
Wow! You came straight to the point, didn't you? The truth can be oh so raw at times. This is why you have to play against as much competition as you can, to gauge your true talents and weaknesses. This is my common belief in any sports one may participate in at any age. Ask "Team Sneed " 8th graders what happened when they ran into some 7th graders a few weeks ago. You can hide within your 2-a, 3-a, 4-a, & even 5-a systems and be "da man." But eventually, players will have to come out from under their systems, be exposed and try and find an Unsigned Senior event to attend.
Tigersvoice is correct dove. You are right most of them time however your attempts to constantly downgrade what kids do gets old. You clearly understand basketball but what these kids accomplish is great no matter what. It may be on a different level but it still is worth celebrating and congratulating on here as we have lots of pride in our schools. We understand that the kids are not going to big time d1 programs but with that said what they do is still a big deal to us and also teaches the kids life lessons.
BTW, there needs to be lines drawn for these arguments. First off, are these players 2 or 3 sport athletes. If so, then yes, they need to be working out quite a bit more than 1-sport athletes. A 1-sport can sort out a workout schedule and other time to work on skills. Then, when the season comes around, just be ready to sharpen those skills. As for the 2 or 3 sporters, they need to be an all-around athlete and must cram a heck of a lot more workout time into their already busy schedule, but they still need to work out to prep for all the sports that they play. I guess I'm still confused as to what everyone is so up in arms about.
Exactly the point. Even if they are 1 sport athlete they are in universal offseason. IT IS STUPID!!! The basketball coaches can lift them as the see fit as the other coaches should be able to!!!!
I just read this thread last night and something came to my mind. I remember driving through Gilbert Lake Estates a couple of months ago ( I have some interest in moving to that area), and was trying to gauge if the addition had many children. One of the things that I look for is basketball goals in the driveways. To my surprise, I saw very few. Does this mean anything? Is there a restriction against it? I don't know, but I may drive out there again and see if anything has changed. I remember when growing up, we had "open gyms" to play in, but, we played more in the neighborhood driveway than we did at the gym. Why? The drive way was always open, you could shoot anytime you wanted and there always seemed to be enough interest in the neighborhood to have at least a 2 on 2 going. Does this happen out in the Hamshire Fannett area? If not, this could be one of the major reasons that the HS program has not had success lately. In my opinion, kids need to play the game as much as possible.....it will only make them better and the best place to start is in the driveway. Also, practice what your coach teaches you or wants you to learn "in the driveway". This will have you better prepared for the basketball season (as well as some strength training and agilities). JMO :)
Good post!!!
This is so frustrating! Dis I say that having a universal weight program was the "best" thing to do?!! No! I said that you can have success with it and that it doesn't hurt any basketball team being stronger and faster. I had success with it as a player. I see teams having success with it now. Yes East Chambers consistently makes post season. That is success. You wanna bring up Cayuga again? You just said that that state champ bb coach just did away with the universal off season. Meaning that they had universal off season this year. They won state!! You said it not me. There's proof right there that you can have success with it. Plus....Cayuga had 2 D1 football players on the BB team this year. Do you know what a D1 football player is?...an athletic specimen. You can't tell me that had nothing to do with their success.
Of course it does not hurt a basketball team to be stronger and faster but the fundamentals are more important and that is a fact. Sure some have success with it but those are the schools who have superior athletes that particular year. Sorry......consistantly making the playoffs is not a big deal anymore in any sport. When every other team makes it that is not that great of an accomplishment in any district.
You...may not have any thoughts about him good or bad. But somebody does. The whole reason that this thread was started is because of the implication that HF will have a downfall (haha..downfall) in the basketball program because of a universal weight program. When the fact is that schools all over the place have had and are having success with it. And will it win a state championship?...maybe, but probably not. But that's not what I'm talking about. HF could start practicing basketball right now and skip football. But anything short of 1 or more incredible move-ins will not put HF anywhere close to a state title run. But they do have a shot at having some success. And all I'm saying is that it's worked for Price before, (3A 4A or whatever they were when it happened) so give it a chance. Weight lifting never hurt anybody no matter what season it's done in.
It did not work for Price. Barbers Hill has had no REAL success in basketball. So that is not what I would call "working."
