When did I say that I would never switch out of the man defense? Nash, your reading comprehension skills are sliding a bit. If you go back to the very first comment I posted after you gave me the scenario of being down by 15, players in foul trouble, yada yada yada, I did say "nope" and then followed with a statement that I "could" not "would" come out in the 2nd half in man because of my deep bench. Comprende'? ;D
Nope, my reading comprehension skills are sliding a lot.(just wait till you get older)  I guess it comes down to deciding whether to accept words/sentences at face value or at something other than face value such . ( as an example, I was unable to accept "shovel ready projects are just around the corner" at face value)  I thought most people had been confronted with that dilemma at one time or another.

 4. You are so right - on the other side, is there even the "slightest possibility" that you may not be as "deep" as you believe?
 5. If you are that deep, I predict an undefeated season for you.  I was foolishly thinking that if your best players couldnt get it done in man to man, it might be reasonable to assume that their replacements would not be able to overcome a 15 point deficit.  But, then again, maybe you employ the Celtic theory where the next sub is better than the starter he replaced except that, in this case, the next three were the superior players.
 6. If you were coaching a team that plays man to man and you were down 15 at the half, your best player had 4 fouls and the next two best players each had three fouls, would you remain in the man to man defense?
 7. Really?
 8. I believe that Tom Thibodeaux and Jim Boeheim are adequate documentation that there is a place for a zone defense in the game today.  Seems to me that a team ought to employ whatever defense causes the most trouble for the opposing team. (I am more than confident that HJ would not have beaten Cleveland in each of the past two seasons playoff games if they had gone man to man entirely for both games) Gonna be difficult for a team comprised of mostly skill oriented(and only average athleticism at best) players to defend a good group of athletes for an entire game in a man to man defense.
 9.
Who knew that all this time Jim Boeheim didn't know what he was doing?
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I know that a lot of people think that man to man is the only way to go.  I would think that you need to be effective at both approaches to succeed today.  NBA uses zone quite a bit (albeit disguised)  Gotta believe there is good reason for it if they use it at that level.
 10. I don't know Mr. Neumann and can offer no reasonable opinion on his coaching prowess, AD abilities, or personal qualities.  I also have no opinion on any Nederland sports as I dont live there and have never followed any of their athletic programs other than seeing their basketball team play once or twice a year for the last several years. I have met Mr. English and he seems to be a fine individual and his coaching record speaks loudly for itself.  I am a die hard basketball fan, so my comments will seem/be tilted toward basketball. I think those who questioned the hiring process for the basketball assistant possibly were trying to say this: When it comes to hiring someone on the football staff, extreme consideration is given to who gets hired .  Additionally, extreme care is given to make sure that the school is  as accomodative as possible to the individual who gets hired in terms of teaching schedule, other duties, etc. etc.  The perception out there is, that when a coach gets hired for another sport, it does not appear that the same degree of care and consideration is employed in that process.  I may or may not be able to prove that.  But I have to ask myself, why, exactly, does that perception EXIST?

But what he has gotten in the past doesn't look good for the future.. Why not hire some guy who English shares an office with and has built a good relationship with for some years now? I guess that makes too much sense.. Im sure you could get another girls basketball head coach
So is shafting the girls with the 2 most experienced coaches on the boys squad fair? What about all the other conditions I've presented. I'm just not seeing the argument here. Its like some on here think Coach Neumann deliberately hired a baseball background coach for a science, freshman basketball, freshman football, baseball role to sabotage the basketball's success.  How does Coach Neumann benefit by denying Coach Smith's desire to move? Don't you think if it were possible for it to all work out that Coach Neumann would put Smith as the boy's asst.?
Would it be safe to assume that the entire football coaching staff has a football background?

Hey Nash- When did Obama get on this board?
Feel free to join the conversation at anytime Honest Abe. I know its fun and cozy on the sidelines but really, come join.
I appreciate the invite, but I respectfully decline. I've said everything I wanted to say, but you are clearly not listening to anything we (those who disagree w/u) say.
Gotta admit, Abe, that I am somewhat envious of you.  You've got people inviting you to speak while I have people asking me not to speak. ;)

 14. Not everyone agrees with most anything- hence all the exchanges of thoughts/ideas on this board.  I would consider it good that the tea party did not agree with our current administration on how to deal with the debt ceiling.  The worst thing they could have done would have been to  have submitted for the sake of not having controversy.  Wouldn't you agree?

 18. While I am unqualified to speak on this particular instance, reality is reality.  If we are honest, we will acknowledge that, in the state of Texas, football is still king ( I have no interest in football and am a passionate basketball fan).  The great majority of Athletic Directors are head football coaches and it is human nature to be less concerned with other sports than the one in which you are involved.  I am familiar with a number of situations where the AD, who may be a very fine person, does not give the attention that he should give when making decisions about sports other than football.  I will bet that if there were some way to do a detailed analysis, the most "qualified" coaching staff at nearly every school will be the football staff ( in terms of experience and interest in the sport they are coaching) and coaching assignments in other sports are, in most instances, a decision with little if any forethought or, perhaps, with forethought regarding how that particular decision could benefit the football program.  If anyone tells me that Universal Off Season is not MORE beneficial to the football program, I would appreciate a good explanation of that one and NOT the bigger, stronger, faster comment as I am sure that the head basketball coach is better qualified to determine the conditioning needs of his players than the head football coach.
 19.
Yes it seems according to my sources they will be able to play since they did a summer transfer for none athletic reasons. The kid for New Orleans I don't know much about. Has anyone seen him play?
I have been told both players are of all district calibre.
 20.
Did you see the stock market last week? That's why! Badsanta likes perks as well.
Yes I did happen to notice the stock market
 21.
We will have to wait until November to find out. I honestly think that Silsbee will be fine. Is Joe the only Silsbee coach not to ever take a team to state? Did another Silsbee coach win one that I'm not aware of? It could have been worst! They could have let SteveNash and myself coach. Lol
I very much resent that remark.  I can easily name three games that year that I could have won as head coach.
 22.
Central? Central was 5A for the longest. Besides one or two seasons I don't recall Central ever losing to the same team or making a deep run. Take HJ for instance. What did they do in 4A? If that same team had stayed in 3A was , they may have done better. There is no way Silsbee has the same talent that it use to be. There have been teams that have had 3-4 All State players alone. There isn't one team from the 00's that could hang with a Silsbee team from the 90's or 80's. Com"on son! There have been a few Tiger teams that went to state but those 90's teams that played against all of the top 4A and 5A teams across the state were cold as ice!
I think that can be attributed to their bookkeeper.
 23.
If Silsbee was was 3A back then, they would have at least 5 titles. The  same talent not there now overall. We will see what happens.
I would say that the talent pool as compared to the number of students enrolled is every bit as good or better today than it was when Silsbee was 4-a.  I suppose that Central could say that if they had been 3-a, they would have 4 or 5  state titles but such a comment doesnt mean much
 24.
Only if it comes with a strong salary, benefits, vacation, and company car.
Why does a man with a million in the bank care about salary and benefits?
 25.
Happy to have you back coach! Let's bring home a title!
New experienced and successful coach plus two 6"5' all star calibre transfers who are both academically acceptable makes for a cant miss combination.
