The new coach studied film from last season. He saw a team with no confidence. "They've got to get their swagger and believe in themselves that they can win," the new HF coach said. "And they have that talent to do that. For me, really it's the mental aspect. These kids got all the tools that they need to be good. Just got to get them to believe in themselves." Now Dove- Isn't that sort of plagiarism?  You have simply taken Pat Knights comments and applied them to the HF situation.
2.
i just heard that there is no decision yet but they have narrowed it down source told me the sticking point is crew cab, leather, platinum package vs. extended cab, cloth, xlt package
Ok- Now I get it - The new coach gets this fancy pickup in exchange for supporting UOS!!
 3.
how do they deal with kids that do both? On Lifting Weights...... 4 Days a week lifting – off season They test body fat VERY IMPORTANT is the weight program “One of the most important thing is to be stronger than the other guy” I love practice and love to play, if you don’t you are probably not going to get better. To be a better player you must get stronger. We lift year round. We chart the players on the weights. Bench, reps, lungs etc. Many people are keeping the kids accountable. I would make less money and pay the weight coach to have a better weight program. the above  is from Don Meyer
Time is limited in high school.  " To be a better player, you must be stronger"?  That might be true if your skills are adequate.  But if you sacrifice skill development time in order to get "stronger" you wont get better.  Looks to me like Kevin Durant is a very good player.

Shrug off the "Cheerleader Mom" parents, board members and administratorsthat insist on their darlings playing varsity over equally or more skilled players. 2. Deal with constant criticism during the season. 3. Deal with constant criticism postseason. 4. Deal with constant criticism preseason. 5. Deal with threats such as I'll take my boy down the street to play at _____________ H.S. 6. Basketball coaching qualities necessary are minimal due to "vast and superior knowledge" of a couple parents with "AAU experience". 7. It will helpful if you can leap tall buildings in a single bound and count to infinity 2 or three times. Mental toughness will be the key. You'll need it.
And, of course, fully embrace the  virtues of UOS
 6.

Speechless brings up a very good point with mental toughness.  Alot of the things you can not see are the most important in basketball.
Running cross country has nothing to do with mental toughness when a kid's jump shot isn't on for the 1st half. He'll be in good physical shape but mentally disgusted if he can hit his shot. Nope, there are other mental training methods I prefer. ;)
The theory would be if you have two fairly equal teams from a personnel and skill standpoint, the mental toughness might come in very handly when things get tight in the end.  Those with a cross country background are less likely to be tugging at their shorts with the game tied in the last two minutes and they will "know" they will likely have an advantage.

Maybe you should home school your two sons and just strictly play AAU. ;)
Nah, I'm just having fun with you guys.  HF players will lift weights year round, run cross-country 8-10 miles during off season and we'll kick Silsbee's team this upcoming year anyway. We will be right on schedule as predicted 2 years ago. ;)
Right on schedule as predicted two years ago?  Then that means you are sticking to your AAA Championship for the upcoming season?
 8. I think it was John Kerry who once said that he too, "had a plan"
 9.
Dove... They will not be running 30 minutes which develops slow twitch muscle fibers, which we all know doesn't develop basketball players.  They will be doing plyos, sprints, dots, cones, etc which develops the fast twitch muscle fibers.  The player will be put through a 30-45 minute workout followed by open gym for shooting.   Doing this allows the full athletic period to be used for basketball skill work such as: Monday-Individual Offensive Development Tuesday- Team Offensive Development Wednesday- Individual Defensive Development Thursday- Team Defensive Development Friday- Scrimmage If the players choose not to do the "Cross Country" workout then the period will have to be sacrificed for weights/conditioning.  Like someone said earlier....the coach can not work with players at all after school before or after basketball season.  This is the best way for the coach to work on basketball skill work while getting in weights/plyos.
All that fast twitch, slow twitch stuff sounds very good.  However, at the end of the game, I want the guy who takes that last shot to have spent most of his time repeating that shot and am less interested in how big his muscles are.  Oh, and by the way, I submit that having been in cross country makes one heck of a difference toward the end of the game from an endurance standpoint.
The Cowboys' Phillips / Garrett arrangement comes to mind. :o
Trying to come up with something offensive about your comment, but can't.
 11.
problem with kids lifting is majority dont see the need and dont put much effort into it. problem with skill development is kids dont see the need and dont put much effort into it. youve got to make lifting/ strength/plyo - meaningful and skill work meaningful or youre pretty much wasting time with both. the right coach can come in and get h-f going - i dont know dove or any of the h-f crowd ... but they are right about having some talent over there if they can get the right people in place. personally i hope they dont b/c i follow a diff 3a team over there.
Lifting, in itself is not the problem.  UOS is THE problem

The knee bend directions came from a very qualified personal trianer out of Houston. ;) I really don't mind the weight lifting but in moderation with very active student-athletes.
From what I understand, mom/dad notes are only good for one day, might need a DOCTOR to take a look at your sons; not a "very qualified trainer"  ::)    Basketball has been over for a little over a month and a half at HF.  There is no MODERATION after the sport is no longer in season and the athlete is not playing any other sport!  UOS as stevie refers to it, KILL 'EM, KILL 'EM ALL  :D
I am sure you think they ought to lift whether they have notes from the parent, doctor, or whatever.

I think Cyprien isn't getting enough mention. It should be noted he has a good friend(s) that work in the AD. I also keep hearing that LU is leaning toward hiring a minority coach.
I can assure you he will get full consideration and you are right about his friend.  I didn't want to be the one to let that cat out of the bag.
I like Evans over Cyprien.  That is not a knock, just that Evans has a head coach track record and I like his background as a player as well.
If I remember correctly, Foster was the last real successful Lamar coach and I don't think he had any college head coaching experience prior to that.

Maturity?  Well, even hardened criminals seem to find remorse when it comes time for parole eligibility.  If anything, Abatemarco is the "safe" hire given his prior time at LU.  The risky hire comes from thinking outside box such as selecting from coaches who have proven they can win consistently with fewer resources.  Evans and Cross move up in my book.  Oh well; I guess I'm not a "forward thinker". 70-121.  'Nuff said.  Move along . . .
;D

 24. I am very curious how someone "declares" that Abatemarco is some X and O genius.  Wouldn't you have to be pretty knowledgeable about X's and O's in order to be qualified to evaluate that same ability in others?  My guess is that most of us on this board and those in the media are NOT qualified in any way to say(with credibility) who is good and who isn't with X's and O's.  It sounds good when you say it but most of those statements are empty words.  Reminds me of "shovel ready projects" -  Plenty of appeal but absolutely no substance.  It's great if you  know how to run this play or that play but if you don't have the right players and then, if those right players aren't properly motivated, how great is the value of that alleged X and O knowledge?  Additionally, if one lacks the skill to effectively communicate with the public, how can you assume one has the skill to do the same with his players/staff?
