I'm one who don't get excited about a dunk if the player is 6'5" and above. Open threes are boring too. You're wide open. You're suppose to hit it. Give me a kid who creates his own shot for himself and others. Thats art.
IAm  Surprised that art is more important than the win.  Give me Ray Allen even though he lacks "artistry"
 2.
No I dont think Rondo can create his own shot.  What would he create, an airball? I mean seriously the guy shoots worse than shaq.  He is a good defender but it stops there, very average passer and very below average shooter.  He is surrounded by alot of great players therefore he looks good. You name a 5 man team with spot up shooters only and I will name a team with players who can create their own shot and we will be able to look at the players and decide which is better.  Just spot up shooters, not post players.  And I will name just guards that can create off the dribble. My 5 that can create off the dribble are Jordan, Kobe, Lebron, Bird, Nash, Magic, Pistol.   There is my top 7 players and arguably the best player that ever lived, the second and third best and the others in the top ten of all time.
Rondo doesnt shoot well because thats NOT what his job is. I would suggest to you that, if necessary, his speed/quickness would allow him to create whenever he felt it was the best thing to do. You said he is a very average passer.  You don't lead the NBA in assists if you are an average passer.  One more request.  For the moment, forget we are having a disagreement.  Watch this video.  Look particularly at # 8,6,5,4,2,1 and tell me(honestly, of course) why he can't create his own shot.  [Hidden Content] Also, while we are having this discussion, I would be interested in seeing all of the great outside shots that Magic "generated" during his career.  And one more item:  Rondo is one of the best, if not THE BEST rebounding point guard in the NBA.
There is another reason people back off Rondo about 4 ft.  Its called quickness and he has more than most.
You should be sleep by now. Preparing for new answers tomorrow :)
I dont sleep- I stay up all night trying to come up with possible responses for individuals who try to tell me when to sleep.
 4.
you don't think rondo can create his own shot?  seriously?  you must not consider a lay up a shot?
There is another reason people back off Rondo about 4 ft.  Its called quickness and he has more than most.  Don't be concerned about whether or not its arguing.  I am always interested in an alternate point of view.  Thats what makes these conversations interesting.  There is no proof/documentation that either of us is right.  I will say, however, that if operating successfully within a team concept is what determines who is and who is not a great player, then there are plenty of great players beside Kobe, Lebron, and Wade.
 5.
I just meant there is a difference between a player who can create his own shot and one that cant.  Everyone likes a shooter and most of the ones named can or could create off the dribble as well as shoot.  Ray Allen can go off the dribble but his primary threat is shooting on kickouts.  But you do have to admit, it would be aweful lonely playing on a team where you could shoot and no one could get one for you and you couldnt get it yourself.   And I wish all the best for the Bosha kid and HF kid, I hope they continue to grow.
I guess I look at it differently.  To my way of thinking, the guy who can effectively convert on kick outs usually removes a defender from the parts of the floor " where the action is" and that helps the guy who is creating his own shot.  Creating shots in a one on one circumstance is one thing, but creating shots against 1 1/2 or 2 is quite another.  The reason RAy can go off the dribble is because the defender is so concerned about getting up close to deny the three.  I know more about the Celtics than most and I love Ray Allen.  However if you let him bring the ball up the court and tell him to create his own shot, I doubt he will have much success.   Furthermore, I am quite confident that 80% of Rays field goals come as a result of someone over concentrating on Pierce or Garnett and, in some cases, Rondo.  Miami has three guys who can create off the dribble but the results so far are less than impressive

I dont know if this is happenign or not because I have not seen them play. Did he create the shots or were they kickouts?  If they were kickouts then I would not consider him a star. Secondly, I just wanted everyone to take a step back and look at this from we are judging a freshmen and 8th grade players.  It is a little too early to say what they will do in college and life.  I dont know if anybody remembers Michael Leblanc or Calvin Murphy Junior who were supposed to be stars and the next NBA players when they played for the Hoops.  Murphy ended up at Niagra, a small school in the Northest and Leblance went to Conneticut, could not play and ended back at Houston Baptist.  These are just a couple of examples of young kids who everyone thought were stars and future NBA players that did not come close. I too played against the Houston Hoops, beat the Houston Select and played for them as well.  I got camps paid for and had letters in the mail from major D1 colleges starting my soph and junior year.  This was about 15 years ago.  I improved some from my junior to senior year and still received letters and visits and all that stuff.  I played Division 2 ball, had the opportunity to play at the Division 1 level in the Northeast but did not want to move.  My point in this is I worked my tail off everyday and lived and breathed basketball and received the same "hype" for lack of a better word and ended up playing D2.  Dont stop dreaming and working hard, but realize that paid camps and letters from colleges is a long way from playing at Duke or the NBA.   I also agree 100 percent about Little Dribblers and some coaches who play kids just because of affiliation with someone who has a little power in a small town.  That does happen but you usually will not see it in good programs.  If you do see it in programs they will not be very good. I also agree that you will get college scholarships from playing in AAU and camps, but a State Championships was always the most important to me.  It was not something that was great for the spring, it was my biggest dream. He has played with this group of boys for10 years, and they all respest eash other and they all look to him for leadership , the fact is that they came to him this summer and talked him into comming back and play with them should say something. He was not disgruntled when he left Evadale , just wonted to play with a bigger club to get more exposure. And as far as not beeing physical, last year was the first year to play center, he had played guard and farward his whole life, so the physical play will come this year. He went to camps to work on that this summer. But his lenght did make match up prob. for clubls last year. In the Hardin games last year they had 4 players foulout trying to play him. But we will have to all wait at least 5 more weeks untill we can find out what kind of team they will have. They have at least 4 more football games to play. Note* He is playing. Thats not an issue.
I believe that, if most of the participants on this board will be as honest as possible, we will discover that the great majority of us are "armchair sideliners" even though we believe we know more than someone else.  If I knew as much as I think I do about basketball, I would be a coach or General Manager somewhere and not on a message board discussing HJ and HF. Very big world out there.
Wow good question! First, let me state that my son in my opinion still has a lot to learn about the game and I do see improvement. There are coaches who say they  want talent but really don't know what to do with it. It can  become a problem for them  because you don't want to alienate your players & their parents  who have been loyal to you or been in the program longer.  So you have coaches who try and suppress talent. You can't!  But if a kid truly has talent in whatever sport, the truth comes out anyway during play. People begin to question why isn't this kid getting a "burn" with the big boys. Or why isn't this kid playing more on his team. As far as winning, I have a saying when I see coaches who portray certain little habits  "Theres a coach playing not to win." In fairness to some coaches, they are more about teaching their players in certain critical situations, but in most cases I see they are playing "little johnny" to satisfy a booster club member, daddyball, loyalty to the player, co-worker (teacher, etc.) or some parent whispering in the coach's ear. So, to answer your question, I'm still trying to find the answer myself. ;)
Dove, regarding your last paragraph-  That sounds like the comment of almost any parent who believes his child is not being played enough.  I'll bet you those words are echoed by hundreds of parents every year in virtually every sport.  I guess it comes down to knowing/believing that someone other than the coach has a better grasp of who is good and who is average.  If a coach isnt putting his best product on the floor, I suspect he will not be employed for very long.
The ice cream analogy is very basic and appropriate.  You could not sell more ice cream by getting on a board similar to this and telling everybody how sorry the ice cream company is.  That would actually make what buyers are left hesitant to buy from a bad company.  Therefore, when approaching that problem with malice, the ice cream salesman winds up screwing only himself even though he thought it was a way to bolster his own credibility.  (very typical  of those "less mentally equipped" which is quite amazing because they believe they are being quite "crafty" and "ingenious")By the way dove, if there are no ice cream sales, there wont be any subsidiaries.  Best example I can give you are Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Mercury.
Nash, the thing with HF is no big deal. I personally came under systems where the best players moved up and played. Plain and simple. At HF it's not programmed that way. High school ball gets you ready to compete during the summer ball. I actually tried to talk my son from attending HF. But he wanted to attend. I honored his wishes.  ;)
Am I hearing you correctly?  You would rather see him win a bunch of AAU games as opposed to a State Championship?

After Bosha its a toss up between that left handed Freshman from Central and Lil Dove...
So did I - but I felt like you wanted a response to your "cornucopia issue".  I was very interested in your comment about people  lacking sensitivity to the needs of others.  I see evidence of that very issue often in the LIttle Dribblers programs.  Oddly enough, it spans the entire social and economic spectrum and is not confined to one segment as some would like to have us believe. Sometimes, it is difficult to understand the "needs" of others and, as you said, we all ought to try to do a better job at doing so.  At the same time, as you said earlier, if we have a strong need, there is no better way to satisfy that need than by doing all you can to realize it within the boundaries prescribed by society.  If I am selling ice cream and business gets bad, it is useless to cry that the ice cream company is advertising improperly or that the product is no good.  The answer is for me to find a way to get more customers.  If I put my energy into solving that issue, the chances to sell more ice cream increase substantially while complaining about advertising or product quality will do nothing except lessen my enthusiasm and hence even fewer ice cream sales.  I know this for a fact.  Have faced it my entire life.  In this particular instance, sensitivity from others was totally irrelevant.  As a result, I will be able to go to my grave without resentment and bitterness.

I call these "cornucopia kids" because they expect life to be like a cornucopia, or horn of plenty — providing them with an endless supply of good things they don’t have to work for. "Like starting positions, Jobs, etc, etc, etc" ;) In this age the number of "cornucopia children" ;D has grown to epidemic proportions, although parents would rather not admit this. Children with cornucopia complexes grow up with the expectation, that the good life will always be available for the asking — without effort and without need for personal accountability." When they face the adult world, "cornucopia kids" fail as they are unable to handle challenges, they shaft others, or get fired from jobs or just can't get that job they always wanted, while some are more likely to turn into "Alcoholics or Gamblers." Much of the blame, must be heaped upon the parents. Parents have a tendency to choose to favor or prioritize their children. They expect to get everything they want, when they want it, and complain bitterly if they don’t get it. Because of this, they "shower" their kids with things and favors to make up for it, hoping to ease their guilt. They have little sincere compassion or sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others. They respond only to their own needs and kind!! Once again, couldnt agree more.  If you dont have what it takes to succeed, simply expecting it wont make it happen.  And the fact that you grew up in a privileged background entitles you to NOTHING.  ON the other hand, being from a less than privileged background, as I said before, ALSO entitles one to NOTHING.  AS for not having sensitivity to the needs and feelings of others, that characteristic has no boundaries and happens in ALL areas of society.  And thats a very valid reason why none of us, regardless of background, should belittle those who are trying to educate our children, particularly on a message board.  Thw winners (in llife as opposed to basketball) will adjust and the losers wont.  But I am very confident that introspection takes one a lot further along than laying blame elsewhere. 24.
Kinda like life and sports. Keep it simple. reading, writing & math  and dribble, shoot, and pass. Teach the fundamentals and have a back-up plan.
Agreed.  But in keeping it simple, its important to realize that the individual himself will determine what happens to him.  To truly believe that whatever you fail to achieve is not your fault but the fault of someone else will waste much of ones productive energies and hold him back from other successes and not just in basketball.  Its very harmful to oneself to believe that you are entitled to something simply because you come from a background that includes a lot of material things.  However, it is EQUALLY harmful to believe that if you did not come from that type of background that you are MORE entitled to anything or that your efforts are more noble than that of someone else more fortunate.  Particulary if you try to secure something you want at the expense of someone else.  Dove, I have never seen the middle school kid that is coming up through the system at HF.  But I have heard that he has no equals around here.  The odds are still very much stacked against him going to North Carolina or playing for the Celtics.  If he gets to a point where he believes that he didnt get there because of his middle school or high school coach, he will have problems in most aspects of his life.  Anything else that doesnt work will suddenly also be attributable to someone else.  Its a poor approach and it NEVER works in the long run.
