1. I think this will be a good game. Lumberton is more difficult to prepare for than Vidor and Livingston were. It is pretty much assumed that those teams will run the ball 95% of the time. Lumberton has a good QB who can run and throw well and have some solid WR's. Totally different style than what we have faced the last 2 weeks. I still think that Dionte is what makes the Dogs go and he gets Brady involved. Lumberton has had our number for the last several years. Dogs are in a position to punch their playoff ticket and I think they will

    Nederland 24
    Lumberton 17

I don't want to hear anything from vidor about homecookin!  The stripes bailed you out the play before.
OK like it or not I am going to say it. I never complain about the calls, but this was horrible. Please do away with the replays. I wish the UIL would ban these stupid screens. First you get a touchdown and the replay showed the receiver was way out of bounds. Then you get a called fumble to decide the game. Tell me that was not a forward pass! We saw it twice thanks to the stupid replay! Now the personal foul was a push well after the play was blown dead. I agree it was not vicious, but had it been the other way you would have wanted the call. I have vented and will finish with this. That was a great game with lots of suspense. Both teams played well when they needed to. The dogs are peaking at the right time and I will say congratulations to Nederland. I just hate to see a game like that get decided on a bad call. I hope they show the game here so everyone cam see it for themselves. It took the refs 5 minutes to decide and they were wrong!!!!!! Who knows what the outcome would have been. I guess we will never know! Again congrats to Nederland one way or another it is a win! Now we have to take care of a Livingston team coming off a win........
I knew this was coming.. I almost started a thread for the Pirate fans to whine about the refs... AGAIN. If y'all were as good as y'all boasted, then y'all would not have been in a position for any call late in the game to affect the outcome. Y'all should have been waaaaay ahead of a team playing with their 4th QB of the year.

It's all about turnovers tonight! I just don't think the Nederland QB and recievers will have their timing down in the slop. I also believe the bomb will be hard to find a handle on. Again, hold on to the ball and we should win!
The passing game looked pretty good in the slop.

Bears face Raiders in pivotal 20-4A tilt

    Van Wade
    The Orange Leader

LITTLE CYPRESS — Two squads that suffered tough setbacks last week both look to keep their slim playoff hopes alive in District 20-4A tonight when the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears welcome the Lumberton Raiders to Battlin’ Bear Stadium.

The Bears (3-5,1-4) fell to third-place Vidor 49-15 last week while the Raiders (4-4, 1-4) dropped a 39-6 decision to first-place Port Neches-Groves.

“It should be a good little battle,” said LC-M coach Randy Crouch. “Lumberton plays a very physical brand of football. Their linebacker (Anthony Beard) might be the best in the area.”

The Bears check in averaging 275.6 yards a game offensively while the Raider defense allows 281.4.

The contest will feature 20-4A’s top two leading passers in Lumberton quarterback Ryan Hughes and LC-M quarterback Hunter Gonzales. LC-M also has the area’s leading receiver in Zack Sonnier.

Gonzales has completed 125-of-217 passes for 1,305 yards and seven touchdowns. Sonnier has been on the receiving end 65 times for 724 yards and seven TDs. Johnny Epps, a solid defensive back, also has 23 receptions for 225 yards and a TD receiving.

Tevvin Jones leads the Bear ground attack with 467 yards and three TDs on 78 carries. Gonzales also has 267 yards on the ground and nine TDs.

“Both teams are pretty evenly matched,” said Crouch. “The field could be sloppy after all the rain we are supposedly getting. It might be one of those deals where turnovers could be the deciding factor.”

The Bear defense, which is allowing a district-high 355.4 yards a gain, will look to slow down a balanced Raider attack that is gobbling up 297.1yards an outing.

Hughes has completed 85-of-152 passes for 1,327 yards and 10 TDs.

His favorite targets have been Jesse Sparks (23-349-3), Kyler Keith (17-345-3) and Chase McDonald (14-293-1).

Hughes also leads the ground attack with 364 yards and a TD on 83 carries. Tailback Ryan Asher has rumbled for 321 yards and six TDs on 76 totes.

“They are extremely balanced and that Hughes kid is pretty accurate,” said Crouch. “They’ll give our defense a challenge. It should be a great game. It’s the last home game for our seniors so I know they would like to play really well.”
I really think that Lumberton has this one hands down in my opinion.
I agree. Raiders by double digits.

A couple of easy wins over Livingston and LCM and you are district contenders again huh. The Dogs come back to reality tonight.  Vidor by 3 scores!
And who exactly has Vidor beaten? Ozen is your most impressive win. Yes, they did beat(in OT) us at our place. Our 2nd string QB was hurt in the 1st half. We played the entire 2nd half with a 4th string QB(Dionte was also OUT that game) that had not taken snaps all week. Please don't point to the WO-S scrimmage, Nederland beat Jasper in a scrimmage. Scrimmages mean NOTHING. Believe what you want, but both of these teams have A LOT to prove. Games are not played on paper nor are they played by what Dave Campbell says before the season starts. This should be a really good ballgame tonight. I do not see us blowing you guys out and I do not see you guys blowing us out either.

Wow - after the struggles they had versus us, I would not have predicted this. But geez they were in a bind losing two Qb's, yeah they do not play Defense, but the team morale suffers big time! Great recovery and great attitude Dionte. What position did you/he play against FW?
He played DE before QB, but he was injured and OUT for the Friendswood game.

Yes.  But being at the bottom on defense will not win you very many games.  Stats are performance based.

I'm not sure Nederland's defense can stop Vidor's running attack.  If anyone thinks they can, what in the past 8 games gives you that belief?  I'm willing to listen.
Nederland doesn't have a defense that will take over the game, but when the offense takes care of the ball and doesn't lose turnovers, they have played well.  They have given up the second fewest points in district, a stat that catches some by suprise.  If we take care of the ball, our defense will put us in position to win... did you listen?

What stat is more important that points against?
Wins and losses?  :D  Just kidding Penny. I know where you were going with that!

I'm just curious as to why people from Vidor consider this a rivalry game. Because both teams have the same school colors maybe, I don't know... Would appreciate it if someone could point it out to me tough...
It goes way back, I graduated in 1972 and it was then as it is now.  There are those Nederland folks, not all, that think they are just better than Vidor folks.
At football? Through the years, they have been. This year should be a good game though. I think Vidor comes in as the favorite.

The reality is, and I know this is not the place to talk facts, but the Dawgs are not the same team that everyone has been looking at. There is a 6' 5" 225 lb reason we are not the same team and if you think he doesn't make a difference maybe you should ask Ryan Brady! I am prediction rain Friday Night, footballs that is, and Vidor better be able to run, not on offense, but defense! There is a new QB in town and he can chunk the rock!
OK I have not seen him play and can't comment, but my question is if he is so good, why was he the 5th QB to be tried. I am sure he has played alot of football. Why is he just now the QB?
He was actually the 3rd QB, but when the other two went down he was also injured. He started the season as a WR, TE, and DE. He's a junior, great athlete, best basketball player in the school. Played QB in middle school. At this point, with all the adversity that Ned has been thru he is a great leader and gives the Dogs the best chance to win. In a perfect world, he would not have to play QB, but he is doing a GREAT job!
  11. Ironically, the Pirates enter this game exactly as the Bulldogs did last season.. Looking to punch their playoff ticket on the road. The Bulldogs are in the position that the Pirates were last season. They are fighting for their playoff lives after an unexpected loss to Ozen(same as Vidor last season). Can the Pirates win the big one on the road to get over the hump? Neumann should have the Bulldogs ready and I know Matthews will have the Pirates prepared and pumped up! Can't wait till Friday!

Ned    38                   running the ball all night long is not going to work for Vidor

    Vidor   17
We shall see... I have read this comment before... and so far it only didn't work against PN-G.... I just hope Big Ned has thier Track shoes on..... Cause we will be  heading straight at you all night long.... and when we pop one... we are usually 15 yds down the field before anyone notices it.... 2 play from Scrimmage against PN-G BOOM 60 yds+ ... unfortunatly for us it was the only big play we made all night....
Honest question here.. Not slamming in any way.. I know the Pirates are good, but... What is the difference in Vidor's offense from last year to this year?

The reason I ask is that Nederland's defense last season was quite possibly one of the worst in school history and seemed to handle the ground game just fine at Vidor's Homecoming on Halloween last season. If I remember correctly, Vidor actually had to resort to throwing the football and did have some success doing so. Nederland's defense is still not a strength, but they are a lot better than last year's version. Is Vidor's offense THAT MUCH better this year?

I think this is going to be a wonderful football game. If Nederland can slow down the Pirates run game then it may come down to the kicking game. I'd give the Dogs the edge there. Should be a great ballgame in my opinion. Pirates will be hungry to punch their playoff ticket and the Dogs are fighting for their playoff lives!
  13. Winning has a lot to do with fan support both at home and on the road.

When a team starts losing, there are a lot of fans dressed up as empty seats!

I think Vidor has the best fans in my opinion. They support their teams through good and bad.

PN-G, Lumberton, and Nederland have great crowd support. But, those schools have a lot better showing when the team is winning. Lumberton's playoff crowd vs. LaMarque two years ago was ELECTRIC! I have also seen some great PN-G and Nederland playoff crowds as well.
