The men's NIT has been good to Lamar in the past so I can't say anything bad. I do agree if the conference champion is also the conference tournament champion the next best team for that conference should get in. Looks like a decision on Roc will have to wait another week at least. Coach Tidwell needs to be totally focused on the team we are playing. This is a first for the WBB program by making it to post season play two straight years. ;)

JJ, Lamar must be getting an at large bid. Coach Tidwell stated to the Beaumont Enterprise that we put in a bid to hoist a game. Why would he say that if not contacted by the WNIT?

Yea, he was a heck of a player from Chicago and is now coaching there. He coached Stan Brown. -
No reason why Lamar can't go after top assistants at some of the up and coming programs. George Mason, Richmond, Belmont, Cleveland State, Missouri State, etc. Tidwell will find someone that can put Lamar back on the map.
Need someone with Texas ties. If someone at those schools has that I'm all for it. I'm sure you are right, Coach Tidwell will get the right guy! -

Actually, he is 28 and a lot of coaches have got their break in their late twenties and early thirties. Again, I am not saying he (Cross) should be the next Lamar University coach but I bet Coach Tidwell talks with him. Coach Tubbs was so impressed he invited Coach Cross to last seasons basketball banquet while he was still AD. This year LSC-PA made it to the DI national tournament. That is right a sorry school like little Lamar State College-Port Arthur is one of 16 teams still playing. -

Well Sir, you didn't do a good job in the written English language for me to know you were talking about Joubert and/or Sutherland coaching at a junior college? I thought you were stating they were better options as Lamar's next MBB Head Coach. Then you are wrong about being on Coach Cross's jock as I've only posted his bio and stated based on that bio he has won everywhere he has coached. If that is being on his jock, there are a few other people hanging on a few. Thanks for the reply; not a lot better English but at least I could make out your point. -

Please stop there, as I respect all coaches as they all work hard at their profession but to say a HS coach is ready for DI NCAA basketball is crazy. At least Coach Cross has done some recruiting. Oh, maybe a couple of these HS coaches have too. ;D -

I just said Coach Tubbs, Coach Tidwell and other administrator are aware of him. Have yet to say Lamar should hire him. However, he has been successful at more places then just LSC-PA. Don't want another gifted recruiter like Roc or we might as well keep him. Did you see Terry's high school record? That is terrible, as in 3 years he had almost as many losses as Coach Tidwell did in 18 years. That is all I'm saying, I want someone with experience at the Head Coaching position even if that is at a lower level. -

You're not going to get a big name that is going up the coaching ladder to Lamar unless there is a bigtime donor to hire BCG with all his baggage. I'm all about second chances but for some reason the big schools aren't touching him. However, that could change with Texas Tech. Also, BCG is good friends with Roc and I don't know if the job was offered if he would take it. I say go after a guy from a smaller school that is working his way up the coaching ladder. Be that someone like Coach Skelton or Coach Cross. I'm not saying to hire one of them but someone with a similar resume. [Hidden Content] [Hidden Content] -

So are several others and I'm with coachacola. Nothing against Terry but having Top 5 recruiting classes at the University of Texas is a lot different than recruiting to Lamar University in the SLC. We need a winner, who has head coaching experience at the JC level or DII. I promise Matt Cross and what he has done without dorms in the city of Port Arthur is amazing. I'm pretty confident Coach Tidwell and other administrators in the hiring process has taken note of what he was done in two seasons in Port Arthur. -

Good post, that is why I say Lamar needs to go after a winner. Be it in juco or DII, someone with an unlimited recruiting budget and brings in nationally ranked recruiting classes at Top 10 schools for one most have never been a head coach at the college level and two they aren't going to bring the same kind of talent to Lamar. Roc was ranked as a Top 5 recruiter and Top 25 assistants ready for a Head Coaching position. I say look at Matt Cross or someone with a similar resume of winning. -
UNLV, I look forward to most of your post. However, you sound a little Narcissistic with your last comments. Should Lamar have won the game today. Yes, we have better coaching and two first team All-SLC players with one being last season's POY. Then we have the Newcomer of the Year and a third team All-SLC player. However, for some reason we didn't play well today offensively. We shot 37% from the field, were 3-19 from 3 pt range and only took 6 FT's the whole game. The team was won 25 games this year and there is still a chance Lamar plays in a post season tournament. I guess bad coaching got the team to this point?

UNLV, this is why some people have problems with your post. No, they have not played awful. They lost to McNeese in Lake Charles in the last 3 seconds of the game. Coach Tidwell hasn't made a shot, got a rebound or made an assist. It's on the players to do those things and he has to motivate them and use the right schemes and play the right players. Then Joey Wells is mainly over defense and they played good enough defense to win as they held Meagan Herbert the SLC POY to well below her season average for points and rebounds. Heck her team won and she is crying on the bench. I'm a huge Jenna Plumley fan and think she is one of the best players to ever wear a Cardinal uniform but she was off her game as 1. her shots weren't falling 2. she was turning the ball over 3. she fouled out. Kalis Loyd only scored 10 points and she is the best athlete on the team and if she doen't turn pro early will be one of the best players in Cardinal history. Tray Smith missed at least 4-5 shots that were basically layups. The team shot the ball under 35% and UCA shot a heck of a lot more FT but some of that was due to Lamar fouling at the end to prolong the game and hopefully UCA would choke at the line and the Cardinals could get back in the game. Would you rather have a team like they were pre Tidwell days? Not me, and I hope he stays coaching the WBB next year. Probably won't happen and we'll probably get Wells and I hope he is ready to take over and not lose the progress of the WBB program under Coach Tidwell.

I support a move to a FBS conference if we have the money and resources to be competitive in all the sports in which we compete. I'll reframe for any other comments because I'm sure a lot of people will disagree and I honestly don't have the time for a debate. -
We'll find out once the job is posted what the requirements are. I honestly doubt you can coach at the college level without a bachelor's degree.

I know under Coach Tubbs the coaches made their own schedule and I think it is the same with Coach Tidwell as he is AD and WBB HC so he has even less time to worry about scheduling for other sports. I know at some schools the AD does the scheduling but I don't think he does at Lamar. -
I know you were probably in a hurry but it's Tommy Sewell.

Floyd isn't the only successful head coach Lamar has interviewed and gone in a different direction. Bob West wrote an article one time of the coaches either interested in Lamar or LU interviewed and ended up hiring someone else. There were at least 5 names people would recognize he mentioned in his article. -
