I as a UT fan hope this is just a sophomore jinx and he'll improve and well as the team. I hope he hasn't lost confidence in himself because once that happens at the QB position it is hard to get it back.
His big problem is he followed behind Colt McCoy who gets his jersey retired the very next season. I'm usually not a fan of jersey retirements until well after they're gone. Gilbert needs to define himself as Gilbert. He might be trying too hard to be like Colt, and that only works for Colt.
That is what a lot of people are saying. He is trying too hard to be like Colt. He just needs to be himself.

LU vs. Okie Panhandle State Predictions?
He wishes I was his dad. Why bad mouth Hussey by saying Hall over him. Hall is all speculation. He could wind up anywhere. Support the players you have not the ones you hope to or wish to have!
Man, which way are you headed. One post you are talking about the coaches. Next you seem to be directing negative thoughts about some of our players. Is saying Hall has more potential than Hussey bad mouthing him. You are right, Hall could sign with Lamar in December and Hussey could beat him out. We are just stating an opinion about Hall and before he signed with Tulsa he even told the Tulsa newspaper that the decision came down to Lamar and Tulsa. So, it isn't like Hall just started thinking about Lamar recently. -
There is no early signing period in football.
Tell it to the first guy, I'm just stating Woodard's desire to form the first collegiate all-area team.
Why even mention him when the TOPIC is early signing?
Because Woodard is the head coach, and has a big say in who gets recruited. A recruiting coach merely finds the guys, it's up to the head coach to really get them to commit.
Now, jj not everyone is going to agree with that comment. :D

Comparing Lamar to the SLC and the other new programs
bigred360 replied to coachacola's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Those DII schools are better than most people think because they can take in juco transfers who have 36 or more hrs and they don't have to graduate. So, there are a lot of kids that fall down that path and are taking up by these DII schools. OPSU will probably be a lot like Langston and we better be ready to play or they could upset us as it is the last game of the season for both programs. We need to get the off season started off in the right direction and that is with a victory Saturday. -
It is funny how fast people forget we have been co-champs of the SLC under Coach Roc's watch. We have two bad seasons and people are calling for his head or stating we can't do this or we can't defend this. Has he had enough time at Lamar? Yes, he took over after Billy Tubbs retired from coaching. Sports have gotten to the point of "what have you done for me lately". I think this team of 8 newcomers and the coaching staff deserve patients especially after one game that we won by 50 pts before cries of "they need to address the rebounding issue" or "anyone who makes Lamar slow it down and pound the ball down low will have a field day!!!" How can you make that observation after one game that we won by 50 pts? Let's see how the team does for the first 10-12 games before we proclaim this team losers or a team that can compete in the SLC. I know you said comparing football to basketball are two different deals. I really not comparing the sports as I'm attempting to compare coaching and judging a coach. Let's say for the sake of debating, Coach Woodard and the football team are co-champions of the SLC in three years. Then the next two years LU finishes at the bottom of the standings of the conference. At that point, should Lamar fire him or even talk of canning him in the AD office? I say no way, he has earn a few more years after winning a conference championship. The same with Coach Roc, will Lamar really be better off if he is let go. Another MBB HC over the past 25 year to resign, retired or get fired. I don't see progress going down that road. Just my opinion but he or any coach deserves four or five years. If the Cardinals stink up the Montagne Center this year make a coaching change but remember it will take the next guy a few years to get his program up and running.

North, I don't know but he was in the running for the starting job during fall workouts.

If JJ does come I hope he isn't handed the job because of how highly rivals may rank him.
It seems that maybe Bevil was handed the job because of his age (experience) and connections with Woodard. I'm sure Prewitt will only get better, and since Johnson probably won't be working out with a football team in the spring, it may set him back a little bit.
If JJ gets a release from his LOI he can change schools at the Christmas and New Year break and be in school and work out with the team during spring drills and the spring game.

Look at J. Charles and the way UT and OC Greg Davis used him. Made me sick to waste all that talent and he made the right decision to enter the NFL draft early. Now, look what he has done for the Chiefs. He is only the second player in NFL history to have over 100 carries and average over 6.0 yards per carry. Guess you didn't look at Lamar's rushing stats before posting Tre Newton's because LU has an amazing 2.2 yards per carry average that makes Newton's 3.6 look great. BTW, rivals had Newton as a 3 star RB and 18th best in the nation in 2008. [i][u][b]Texas due to Greg Davis isn't getting the 5 star recruits at the RB position. I haven't kept up with VERBAL PLEDGES this year. As I stated, look at their roster. I didn't say, check out rivals. But, thanks for pointing it out. As a Longhorn fan, maybe the future will be brighter with a star recruit like Malcolm Brown.

AggiesWeAreNot, don't compare me and Raiders. I've been a Cardinal Club member. My ex-wife was on the Board of Directors for a few years. As for as IQ, if you are having a AMI and come in where I work you better hope my IQ is pretty good. Obviously, you and I have a difference of opinion about offensive football. I'm more of taking what the defense is giving. 8 men in the box throw the ball. 7 men in the box run the ball. Maybe you can say I'm more conservative. As for a championships or league titles, for everyone you mention passing the ball. I have find one that runs the ball well. You mention SFA in one of your post. They have a two time All-SLC and POY QB in Moses. They are a Top 5 team in FCS and I bet you they will not win a national championship because they can't run the ball when they will need to. Once in the playoffs the defenses have guys who can cover. Do I wish they would win? Heck yes, because our loss to them would not look so bad. Now, back to the game with SD. I recall Prewitt and Ford making a great play on 3rd and 10 from our own endzone. Yes, he threw the ball about 20 yards on the play and I believe that was the last play of the 3rd quarter. The rest of the 98 yard drive was with the wind at our backs. I don't think Prewitt could have made the 53 yard pass to Kendrick Prejean on 3rd down against the wind to keep the drive alive. Then Prewitt hits Ford for a 14 yard pass play to win the game. Oh, I forgot to mention the drive SD took the lead was on about a 60 yard drive with 3 straight running plays with them scoring on a 37 yard run by Sims. Then Prewitt lead the Cards to victory on the next drive. Amazing! As for as the Coach Woodard show, what do you expect the man to say? -
Lazeek has posted about the football team. I'd be glad to post them on here. All I'm saying is this is basically a new team with 8 new players and Lyon College was our first game. We beat them by over 50 points. I just think it would be best to wait and see on this team. You haven't seen me post anything about winning record, winning conference, star players. Except, I have stated I'll like to see what Mike James can do. You say give the football team time and you are correct. I say give this basketball team time. Don't we both want the best for Lamar athletics? I think we do.

Comparing Lamar to the SLC and the other new programs

Great post LumberCard as I heard Coach Woodard address a person asking about recruiting. He said, Lineman, lineman and more lineman; then the best athletes available. We are small for a FCS level school on the OL and DL. I heard one of the DL for Lamar was outweighed by over 100 lbs by a SD O-Lineman. -

LU vs. Okie Panhandle State Predictions?
bigred360 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Well they attempted the option a couple other times with negative results. Remember the bad pitch from Prewitt in the 3rd quarter and one other time but the RB went the wrong way and Prewitt had no one to pitch to. As for a Hall being better than the backs we currently have I'll take the coaches, recruiters and the recruiting services opinion. They all say Hall is better than who be currently have. Sorry, if that hurts but it is the truth. If not, Hussey would be playing for A&M because I'm sure he had the grades to get it. -
I admit he has proved me wrong and I'm glad he has as we were close at Georgia State and got the victory against SD. I just hope he isn't the QB next year and it has nothing to do with him. I'm just hoping a 3 star dual threat QB decides to come home to Lamar and play. ;)

He's teams have not produced very good numbers on the ground and that goes back to his days at SHSU. Ask one of their fan's that frequent the forum. I don't care if yards per sack are entered into the total number per rush attempts because it is the same for all DI schools. Less than 30 yards rushing and another game without a rushing TD says there is something missing be it the OC schemes, the OL, the RB's or all the above. We have to fix this problem in the offseason or next year will be a long one as SHSU is better, then there is SFA, McNeese, Texas State for a year and the rest of the SLC. We have to manage the game using our run game which keeps the clock moving and the defense off the field. Passing the ball, the clock stops with every incompletion or the player runs out of bounds or he makes a first down and the clock stops til the chains are moved.

Agreed there is more to it that just what games LU wants televised. It is less expensive to do home games but then it effects attendance. I know for a fact Coach Woodard did not want the SFA game televised. I heard the man say so myself. -
Lamar needs to address the rebounding issue and half court offense ability!!!!! On the run they look great and score very well. Anyone who tries to make LU slow it down and pound it down low on LU will have a field day!!!!!
Geez, can't you be happy for a victory versus Lyon before starting to talk about what you think Lamar can't do. Man, if this was a football thread people like you would be the first to defend our areas of concern like special teams, a running game or us being the last DI football program to not have a rushing TD. What rebounding issue are you talking about? This was our first game and we out rebounded Lyon 44-37. Lamb had 9 and he is a guard. Then Charlie Harper played the most minutes at 24. That is 4 minutes over HALF a game. Then, how do you know that teams who tries to pound the ball down low on LU will have a field day? Again, we have just played one game. I thought you were impressed with Brazier?

Man, there are a ton of post about this game and most make a lot of sense (not since) haha. A couple of guys really know how to push the buttoms of other people. Here is my take on the game. Lamar played with a lot of heart during this game and never gave up once behind. If you noticed Lamar played better offensively when the wind was at their backs; like in the 4th quarter. Our third string QB played great as he was something like 24-29 passing. The WR's made some great plays. Raiders, I don't care about them (SD) losing their starting QB when we lost Kevin Smith to injury early in the season and Andre Bevil couldn't get the job done. So we are starting a freshman QB who is 5-11, 170 and he lead the team to a victory. Now, there were a couple of plays that were questionable calls. One the first TD and the second the possible safety. Raiders, there are plays like that in every game. Heck, even at the pro level and FBS level they have people in the booth to review the plays and the calls made. It isn't like this game was the only one to have a couple. Still not impressed with the special teams nor the running game of Lamar. It was funny to read some of the opinions of teams that didn't run much having won titles. So, I guess we are comparing LU with NE and Tom Brady, Miami and Dan Marino, the Colts and Peyton Manning? Even the SLC was funny because they had a few 1,000 yard rushers in their program. One went on and played baseball at Rice and the other was Tre Newton who is now at UT. I don't know if it is the OC, the OL or the RB's but Lamar will not be successful next season with that schedule and playing in the SLC and not having a running game or a rushing TD. Defense played hard but gave up way too many yards to SD rushing the ball. I know they were a lot bigger than us as their OL average about 300 per man. All said, I am happy we beat SD and hope to improve versus Oklahoma Panhandle State.
