Man, that is a tough second year schedule with just one non DI school in Langston. I hope we hit the weights hard and work well with the strength and conditioning coaches and get bigger, stronger and faster at every position. Then, I hope Coach Woodard makes and few adjustments and we recruit well this winter. This is a much tougher schedule than this year!

Final men's hoop scrimmage notes
bigred360 replied to HoopInsider_Cooper's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Well, Brandon Davis is listed as a guard. So, if Coach Roc goes with a 3 guard line-up I would expect Mike James, Brandon Davis and Kendrick Harris/or Anthony Miles. He goes four guards it will be either Lamb or Adams. -
Wish TSU and UTSA the best in their future with the WAC and in FBS level football.
But these are our star players!!! lol I just have to believe Woodard has seen this act before from Bevil. Remember when you take over another schools problems (tranfers) you run this risk. Lets go get some freshman athletes take our lumps and be good in 2 years. A quick fix is not the answer for LU. I do not care where the athletes come from as I cannot remember the last time LU signed a big time player from the GT. Lets hope we start getting something better than we have now.
I have no problem with the juco's Woodard recruited because most of them played for him at Navarro. Plus, he was a juco head coach so he had a lot of contacts with other juco coaches. I don't know about this season but in the future I'm sure he will want to recruit more heavily on prep players. As for as Bevil, he has never been in any problems off the field while in HS at WO-S, Navarro or here the pass two years. You might not like how he acts during a game but that is a maturity problem he and Coach Woodard need to address. Am I ready to see Doug Prewitt at QB Saturday? Heck yes, as Andre has 20 TO's with 14 interceptions and 6 fumbles in 7 1/2 games.

LU Women Aim For Return To NCAA Tourney

They are going to be very exciting to watch. If you haven't never watched a women's basketball game in person you'll be surprised at their athletic ablities. Lamar is loaded from top to bottom with two players that are flat out studs in Plumey and Loyd. The only weakness IMO is the lack of scoring in the post but if they can get that fixed I can see them dancing in March again. -

Just chunk the ball against Okie Panhandle.
air that sucker out!
If it was up to Whitten, he probaby would but Coach Woodard is more conservative. He likes to control the ball on offense and establish a running game to assist in keeping the defense off the field (they have a lot of injuries on defense) and don't have much depth as they have moved a least one player from OL to DL to improve our depth at that position.

Please just state the facts and do not get personal with your observations
So I state the FACTS, LAMAR against GSU two first year programs. The stats and EVEN THE SCORE are almost even and you reply stats are for losers. The topic of this post "Could LU coaches be over their heads." The FACTS show no. If they were over their heads the game against a similar opponent (GSU) whould have been a blowout.
Sorry, man the stats don't tell the whole story about the GSU game. If we don't have a block punt they have to go more than 13 yards for their first TD. There is the 6 points we lost by right there. But, they had a 5 play 19 yard possession that ended with a FG and a 33 yard drive to add another FG. So, that is 13 points there due to poor field position and special teams play. We could have won that game if the field position was in favor of Lamar instead of GSU's and we didn't have a blocked punt. -
Well, the conference lay out is terrible. You have teams from Louisiana to Hawaii which causes terrible travel cost for non revenue producing sports like soccer, volleyball, golf, T&F, tennis, swimming and gymnasts.

First GSU drive was 5 playes for 46 yards and ended with a FG. Then after a blocked punt, GSU went 13 yards for a Haynes 8 yd pass from Little. Lamar then went 76 yards on 11 plays and scored on a 21 yard FG by Stout. Then GSU went 8 plays, 33 yards for a 47 yard FG. Then Lamar has a very impressive 99 yard drive that ended with a 13 yard pass play from Prewitt to JJ Hayes. Then Ryan Clark had a pick 6 of 54 yards in the 4th quarter and Lamar took the lead. 17-13. GSU then scored the last 10 points. A 10 play 71 yard drive that ended with Little hitting Williams on a 2 yard pass play. GSU ended the scoring a 5 play 19 yard possession that ended in a 29 yard FG. What am I driving at? Lamar had poor field position most of the game. While GSU had drives of 46 yards, 33 yards, 71 yards and 19 yards to put points on the board. It is much easier to score when your offense isn't having to drive the length of the field every possession. Lamar scoring possessions were 76, 99 and a defensive pick 6. Sorry if you don't see it, but the special teams are killing us. There is some type of Special teams mistake in just about every game this season (blocked punt, blocked FG, missed extra point, punt return for a TD, kicking out of bounds or just pooch kicking where the other team has the ball around the 40 yard line). Not kicking the ball deep leads to the other teams having great field position. If the kicker is STILL injured he should not be on the field. If that is the case he is hurting us not helping. Then you add the offensive problems of running the ball and being able to score rushing the football. 3.0 yards per carry isn't going to cut it at the FCS level of college football. -
I have seen improvement almost each week in the defense. the defense is much better than they were at the begining of the season. As for the offense - no improvement. Still cannot run the ball to save our lives and our QB play has been atroscious. Prewitt may be the upswing needed for the QB play. It would not disappoint me or even seem inappropriate to revist the OC job after this season. Having said that, I think the best way to recruit to any program is to show the recruits continuity. If they believe that the guy recruiting them is going to be there four years later, the visit and the speil is much more effective. For that reason - among others- I would give Coach Woodard at least three years.
Great post Ruckdad and acknowledged by DP. I have a few stats I hope to share about the GSU game. -
Coachacola, I hope you are right as I can't believe we have went this long without a rushing TD.
-
No need to jump at 1st thing.
There is no doubt we have to upgrade our athletic teams and facilities before serious talks about jumping to another conference is realistic.

Final men's hoop scrimmage notes

Just my opinion after watching a practice and two scrimmages. I think the starting 5 (before Mike James returns) will be. 1. Harris at the PG, he has really been impressive. 2. Davis playing the SG, he can shoot with range way past the 3 point line and hits about 45-50% of his attempts. He is also good at driving to the basket and scoring or drawing a foul. He is a very good FT shooter. 3. Nelson at the SF, when the coaching staff put a big body on him he would hit the open shot. Small guy and he is going to the basketball and can dunk with authority. He plays a lot better facing the basket. 4. Brazier at the PF, at 6'7, 235lbs he is a good rebounder, good defender and makes good post moves to get open under the basket and can score inside 15 feet pretty good. 5. Custer at the Center position. I can't believe how much better he is this season. Or I should say up to this point. He is rebounding well, making great passes and scored off of offensive rebounds and he can be very accurate behind the 3 pt line. After Mike James returns, he'll take a few weeks to adjust to the team but he has the skill to be a great player for Lamar. Adams, Brown, Harper, Miles, Lamb, Ebomwonyi and Minor should get quality minutes. -

Changing captains The previous captains were quarterback Andre Bevil, wide receiver J.J. Hayes, defensive end Jacody Coleman and linebacker Johnathan Ekpe, all juniors. Last week's captains were Prewitt, center Kyle Gillam, defensive back Branden Thomas and defensive end Jesse Dickson. All are freshmen. "You've got to lead by example," Woodard said. "You can't be saying you're going to be on time if you're late. You can't be saying, 'Hustle,' if you're the one dogging. You can't be saying, 'Have a great attitude,' if your attitude is poor." booyah
I think that says it all right there!!!!!!!!
DP, I agree with your comment.

Great first step it getting the teams attention.
-
Actually, he played the second half versus SFA. If you are talking about starting, you are 100% correct.

I believe he'll be back in 2 weeks. But, he is suppose be a lot like Kenny Dawkins just bigger. I'll be there.

Could LU coaches be over their heads
bigred360 replied to hipster's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
No, you are correct we don't have the full allotment of 65 scholarships. I believe they have 57 right now. But, there were two classes with one red-shirting a year. I think Coach Woodard will have a nice class this year with recruits being able to experience the game day atmosphere and the facilities here at Lamar. I just think we can do better at a couple of coaching positions but that is just my personal opinion. That is the same as people thinking Coach Roc needs to be releaved of his duties. It is just an opinion. Maybe these coaches will prove me wrong. Hopefully, Coach Roc will prove his critics wrong too. -
ok year one so its stupid to even argue about this look at it this way when a coach gets fired and the AD brings in a new one he doesnt tell him you have one year to turn it around or your out he gets atleast 2 to 3 years minimum. so when you build a program from the ground up with one recruiting class remember to be patient so let this year play out then we can start this topic next year when we can see progression or degression then this subject is relavent JMO
Actually, we had two recruiting classes and we are heavy with FBS and juco transfers. Meaning? I think the coaches were expecting to win this season. I don't think there needs to be a Head Coaching dismissal but there are a couple of other coaches who Coach Woodard really needs to reevaluate for his long term success here at Lamar.
