I used the OU game to further how ridiculous it was for Todd to bring in high school assistants. How hard could it have been for a seasoned University of Oklahoma offensive coordinator to outcoach a defensive coordinator(Mendoza) right out of high school?
Agree, I think he wanted to be loyal to his assistants at SLC, JMO. Those decisions probably cost him his job. 95% or higher, of the HS defensive coordinators in the state of Texas would not have been ready their first game at the FBS level to compete and win versus a team like OU. Again, best of luck with the coaching search at the UNT.
I think they will be better this season and I didn't mention a few players who are new. 1. Tremell Adams as he can shoot the ball and maybe better than I thought watching one practice. 2. Orlando Brazier at 6'7, 235lbs may have an impact in the post. I just thought a few of the returnees played better in the practice session I observed. 3. I failed to mention Darius Harris of PA Memorial he is more impressive than I thought he would be with the numbers he put up in High School. I can see him getting some PT but if he were red-shirted he could really develop into a skilled big man next year. 4. Finally Tre Lynch the freshman 6'0, 165lbs PG. He has some talent but I think Miles at this point is better and I hear great things about Mike James at PG. JMO, Coach Roc should reconsider red-shirting Harris and Lynch.

Lamar vs. North Dakota Predictions?
Lamar averaged almost 26 points per game their first 3 games, since then they have scored a total of 27 points. And against D1 opponents Lamar gives up over 35 points a game. Lamar can't be favored to win any games with those numbers. Nevertheless, the defense is improving and if Bevil can find a way to play halfway decent without turning the ball over all the time Lamar has a chance to win.
110% agree with your post coachacola. We can't turn the ball over 3-4 times a game and expect to win. If we don't get behind early it will be easier to run the ball and not pass as often. So I agree with JJWooten also. -

I think Green Menace is saying the HS coaches don't have success when they go straight to being the head coach at the college level. Didn't Notre Dame try this recently with a highly touted HS coach and that didn't work? In hindsight, Dodge probably should have been hired as a OC first at the college level before being the head coach.
Well, then in that cast I agree with both of you. I just don't think Todd Dodge is a bad coach as he probably should have got his feet wet as a OC somewhere before taking on a Head Coaching position at a FBS level program.
Exactly! I was referring to coaching in HS then going straight to college. I wasn't referring to the players. Todd Dodge's first game as a college coach in 2007 was against the Oklahoma Sooners in which UNT lost 70-10, or by some other outrageous score. During the game, early on, OU defensive players reported to their coaches how UNT was playing a very "basic HS defensive scheme", to the point that the players were laughing at how easy it was to score on UNT. And the HS defensive coordinator turned FBS defensive coordinator in one offseason, Coach Mendoza, didn't have a clue how to adjust to what OU was showing them on offense. Offensively, all Dodge's offensive coordinator, Todd Ford, could do was run short dump passes of 3-5 yards and some bubble screens. No adjustments based on what OU was showing them on defense, which was a basic 4-3 scheme. dodge and company were clueless. And I'm not trying to say UNT would have won or even come close to winning the game. Just decrease the amount of embarrassment. The rest is history.
I was being sarcastic about the players. You mentioned Todd Dodge's first game at UNT versus OU in Norman, Oklahoma in 2007. OU was #8 in the country in FBS when they played and UNT had better offensive stats versus the Sooners than Lamar did in our 71-3 loss to SFA. So join the club for embarrassment. UNT had 13 first downs, 232 passing yards and time of possession was 27:58. Lamar in comparison had 9 first downs 139 passing yards versus a top 5 FCS team. I'm not defending Coach Dodge but to use his first game versus OU isn't really something that isn't uncommon and that is for one team to beat the crap out of the other. Was UNT right to fire Coach Dodge in middle of the season? I say if you are going to make a change anyway it gives you more opportunities to talk with other coaches and hopefully land the best candidate for the position of Head Coach. I know Coach Dodge will land on his feet somewhere and will be successful. Good luck to UNT in their search for a new HC.
i had some high hopes for lamb whats the deal with him just a bad practice or was he a little bit over rated too early to tell but what did u see out of him so far
Devon Lamb is well put together at 6'2, 185. He is very aggressive and does rebound well for a guard but in all the drills and scrimmage portion of the practice he didn't shoot the ball well and he doesn't seem to have a nice "stroke" when shooting the ball. He does play hard but IMO he was over-rated at least up to now because even in the scrimmage portion he didn't start for either team.

Forgive me, this computer is killing me! Now on to SHSU MBB team I think Hooten will use a lot of stuff done by Bob Marlin because "if it ain't broke don't fix it". They should be one of the favorites to win the SLC or at least in the Top 3. Clavell is a stud and maybe the best post player in the league but IMO Anatoly Bose of Nicholls State is the best player in the conference. LumberCard, you made some impressive points to your post and most of them will probably hold true.

Don't have time to list all the coaches who coached at the HS level then went on to coaching at the college level. One off the top of my head is Bum Phillips. Although he was never a HC at the DI level he was an assistant at the highest level of college football.

Nor did your post mention his stop at McKinney where they were a run oriented offense and changed the offense to a spread. By 1991, McKinney made it to the 4A regional finals.
No disrespect bigred360, but talking success in HS football is one thing, FBS is another subject. HS sucess does not translate to college success. Never has, never will.
So UNT doesn't recruit high school seniors? I mean HS success does not translate to college success.

Sorry, computer problems as I'll go onto the WBB team. Coach Tidwell's team is loaded and they are going to play at a faster pace than they did in the past as it wasn't a strength of Brittney Williams with her size and knee problems. Jenna Plumley is a flat out stud. She scored 30 pts but it didn't seem as though she was taking that many shots and if I would have kept up with steals she had at least 6. Then there is Loyd who is another stud. I'll put it this way, I think she is better than Tamara Abalde IMO. Maybe not a better shooter but overall a better player on offense and defense as she too had several steals and scored about 24 pts. Then Myriam Igoufe is finally healthy and is very quick. Can't believe she had two ACL surgeries. I believe she'll be starting at the 2 as she has a good all around game and she is able to run the court very well. Then Henderson or Whittaker will start at the 4 as they can both rebound, score and defend. I believe once Francesca Bellatin adjust to the American style of WBB she'll be pretty good as she didn't score during the scrimmage but you can just tell she has some talent. I think Ang Green is a very good player and she'll back up both Plumley at the point and Igoufe at the two. At this point I think Trashanna Smith will be the 5th starter as she plays good defense and can rebound. She isn't really a scorer but there will be scorers at the other four positions. Then ladies I think will get major minutes are Brockett, Hays and Meengs. Ayers and Mock looked good at PG but they aren't going to get major minutes with Plumley and Green there. Maybe Coach Tidwell will red-shirt a couple of players because they are too good to just waste a year of eligibility.

Most everyone agrees the West is all around a better division from top to bottom. Looks like I'll have to change my opinion. I like Lamar in the East for one reason and that is to play McNeese twice in every sport except football. As for as Lamar MBB, they are talented with some good recuits but the thing that got my attention when watching them is their returning guys have all gotten better especially Charlie Harper, the guy looks like a man now. He is 6'5, 200lbs but it is all muscle. I think Coach Roc is going to use him as an undersized 4. Ebomwonyi 6'11, 220lbs has really improved offensively and he is pretty good on the defensive end as well. Kendrick Harris has really improved as a shooter and is cat quick. Miles looks good as he was playing the point is the practice I saw but have heard he is better off the ball. Custer looks bigger and more confident. Stanford Brown 6'8, 225lbs made some impressive plays both offensively and defensively. As for as the newcomers, I hear Mike James is a stud but he didn't practice when I watched them but he'll be a starter once the season starts. Nelson 6'5, 205 is a slasher to the basket and can make some awesome plays above the rim but I think he'll have to beat out Harper and I like the returnee at this point. The one guy that really caught my attention was Brandon Davis as he is 6'6, 190lbs but he looks closer to 170lbs as he is very thin. However, he can shoot the ball from NBA range and with his height I think he'll be able to get his shots off as he also has a quick release. I wasn't overly impressed with Devon Lamb and I don't think he'll start for this team.

He has his associate degree from Navarro so he has transferable credits. This is a red-shirt year for him so as long as he gets in school at Lamar in Jan. He'll be fine. -
No, the Eastern Division has some quality team as TexasTerror spoke of VB, while UCA has won 30+ SLC matches. Plus, they beat Lamar last season in WBB so they will be good this season as they have all-everything in Megan Herbert . You guys might be right top to bottom but the Eastern Division has some good teams.

This is the only quote I've read and personally I don't see anything wrong with what he stated. “I feel like they need a playmaker, somebody that can take it the distance instead of just being a role player,†Hall said Friday by phone. “I think they need a playmaker. I feel like I can go there and do some things at Lamar, man. I feel I can make them jell as a team.†I believe he was probably called by the interviewer for the Beaumont Enterprise and asked how he could help the team. What is he suppost to say, "Man, I don't know. I'm not sure I'm good enough to play at a startup program like Lamar. They are putting up some amazing numbers in the run game so I might be at the bottom of the depth chart." I didn't see him say he was going to break any records, be All-Conference or anything like that. I believe he made a statement of what he actually believes to be true. You're correct this is college not junior college or high school. I agree on letting things play out and hope for the best regarding Hall and Jeremy Johnson. -
Whats the thought process there? He has so many options.
Not as many as you might think. If he wants to play next year instead of sitting out another season he'll need to go FCS. He can transfer to a FCS school without having to sit out a year. But, if he were to go to a FBS school he must sit out one season to become eligible at that school. So, if he did that he would lose a year. As you have 5 years to complete 4. At a FBS he would be sitting out this season and next season which is 2 years. So, he'd only have 3 years of eligibility left. -

He has done anything in college yet
Well, I hope he thinks he is good and a player who can change the game with one touch of the ball. I like players who have confidence in their abilities. ;)
I like players that let their play on the field do the talking for them!
Did I say anything about letting their play on the field do their talking for them? No, I stated I like players who had confidence in their abilities. I don't like them telling others of their confidence as I think their play should do the talking. But, if you don't have confidence in your ablities you won't be able to preform on the field, the court or any area of athletics. So, Derrick Hall hasn't produced on the track in HS or the football field in junior college? Lets' see, in track running a 100-meter time of 10.33, and jumped 6-10 in the high jump being only 5'10 and 24-7 in the long jump doesn't impress you? Then at Navarro Junior College he rushed for 1,011 yards and 14 touchdowns on 114 attempts which is an 8.86 yards per carry. He caught 13 passes for 292 yards which was an amazing 22.46 yards per catch with four TDs as a sophomore. As a freshman, he rushed for 1,211 yards on 158 carries which was an 7.66 yard per carry and 15 TDs, while catching 14 passes for 300 yards which was an incredible 21.42 yards per catch and four TDs. Hey, with two straight seasons not making the SLC tournment a lot of people forget than fact or they use the excuse of Lamar playing in the Eastern Division that season. Believe me UCA, NW State. SE Louisiana, Nicholls State and McNeese will not just roll over for the Cardinals as they will have to earn their victories just like they would if playing in the Western Division.

Heck, it would be funny if they lost their HC to another program because he has done such a great job starting up the South Alabama program. What is it not, 15 or 16 in a row without a loss?

Lady Cards to conduct Red-White scrimmage
bigred360 replied to bigred360's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Went to the Lady Cardinals scrimmage today. The Red team beat the White team in both halves played in game like situations. The first half was the Red team 45 to the White team 26 and second was Red team 55 and White team 30. Coach Tidwell played several players on both teams so it was hard to keep up with individual scoring. But, I did kept up with the scoring the best I could. I was unable to keep up with the other stats as they are playing a fast tempo which was fun to watch but hard to keep stats. Here is the scoring but the player may have played on both team. I was really impressed with Jenna Plumey, Taylor Hays, Ang Green, Myriam Igoufe, Jasmin Henderson, Kalis Loyd, Monique Whittaker and even Adrianne Meengs who was really good on defense. She hasn't played basketball since HS as she played volleyball 4 yrs at Lamar and was SLC Setter of the Year in 2007. I bet she'll get some PT if she keeps playing defense like she did today. 1. Gia Ayers 5 pts 2. Chantelle Brockett 5 pts 3. Kalis Loyd 24 pts 4. Brateicka Mock 2pts 5. Ang Green 12 pts 6. Taylor Hays 13pts 7. Danielle Heithof f 4 pts 8. Kayla Dunk 2 pts 9. Jenna Plumley 30 pts 10. Adrianne Meengs 7 pts 11. Francesca Bellatin did not score but you can tell she has talent. 12. Jasmin Henderson 13 pts 13. Myriam Igoufe 13 pts 14. Trashanna Smith 6 pts 15. Monique Whittaker 19 pts
