I bet you will be surprised. I'll be at the Langston game with a few family members to support the Cards win or lose. Langston's famous alumnus, Former Dallas Cowboys star Thomas "Hollywood" Henderson. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Henderson_(American_football) Go Big Red!
Sleepy forget about it. They dont get it!!
Twig, where did you come from? I guess there is a first for everything. Haven't seen a post from you on this forum in the past. As for as evaluating a staff on 5 games in the first year back in 21 years I'm not doing that. I am voicing my opinion of the "team". Because if not, please explain 21 junior college transfers, 7 transfers from FBS schools, 2 from DII schools, 3 from FCS schools, 2 from NAIA schools, and 1 from a prep school. The rest of the roster is freshman and red-shirt freshman. You can't tell me Coach Woodard didn't have a "sells pitch" for recruits to come to Lamar and start a new tradition; the beginning of something new. BTW, the best facilities that will be in the SLC next season. I'm 100% sure sleepy knows more about basketball and golf than I do but I know football pretty well. I played the sport in HS and brother was a HS coach. He was a finalist for the Deweyville job at age 26 and every team he coached made the playoffs and that includes LC-M where they haven't made the playoffs too often, West Brook and Mansfield. So I know how hard coaches work. They put in 6-7 days a week, 12 or more hrs per day. IMO to judge the coaching staff at Lamar this early as a first year start up is ridiculous. That said you can't tell me they did not have a "plan" to be successful in the win-loss colum this season or they would have filled those transfer scholarships with freshman. Sleepy stated "We will not compete for a conference championship for at least 3 years and that is a fact and normal." Well, please show me the post where I said anything about a conference championship. You won't find it because I never stated it. However, with the recruiting philosophy (large number of FBS, FCS, DII and junior college transfers) half the team will have used up their eligibility before 3 years. I'm just looking for the team to be competitive with the schedule the coaches made. Just show me some improvement from game to game and I'll be happy. I've waited 21 years for Lamar to bring back the football program so I'll be supporting the team win or lose. Go Cards! -

Sorry sleepy, I agree we as fans expect too much from most of our opponents but SHSU is actually younger than we are. They have more Fr. and red-shirt Fr in their two deep roster than Lamar does. There is no excuse for poor tackling at the college level period! 4 of the 5 teams we played had a RB have a career night rushing against us. I realize having a lot of 3 and out offensive possessions keeps the defense on the field longer. They need to start creating some TO's and defensive stops on 3 down and get of the field. SHSU had a true freshman who was a prototypical college QB at 170 pounds. The RB was a red-shirt FR transfer from Kansas State named Flanders who rushed for 153. Our team rushed the ball 9 times for a -23 yards. That is terrible for a college team in their 5th game of the season! I'm sorry if I hurt a few peoples feelings but our RB's were not heavily recruited for a reason. The again, I'm not sure Emmitt Smith could gain any yardage with the type of blocking our O-line is giving. They aren't great at pass blocking either. I'll go with the coaching staffs word on the injury of Andre Bevil a high ankle sprain (A high a sprain is used to describe a particular type of ankle injury. Normally, when someone sprains their ankle, the ligaments that surround the ankle joint are stretched or torn. This injury causes pain and swelling around the ankle, and can be quite uncomfortable.) so he wasn't as mobile which is his best asset as a QB. So while I don't expect us to have a winning season the first year I don't expect to be getting beat 71-3 to the best team in the SLC or 38-10 to a team that won't place in the top 5 in the SLC this season. -

Our offense is terrible, too many TO's, the O-line can't create a lane for the RB's to gain some yardage on the ground and they aren't protecting our QB in the passing game. SHSU had pressure on Bevil all night. Yes, he makes some very questionable throws into coverages. I hope Coach Woodard recuits a QB, RB and a couple of O-linemen. Defense, they can't stop the run. 3 of the 4 teams we have played had a RB go well over 100 yards rushing for the game. I don't know if it is coaching or the guys just can't tackle. They seem to hit the runner and just bounce off. Our defense doesn't produce any TO's and SHSU had the ball over 40 minutes of the game to LU's 20 minutes. There is so much more to say but I'm at work now so have to cut it short. Still bleed red and white but hate losing. I'll be there for HC at Provost Umphrey with a few family members.
I hope Coach Woodard recuits a QB, RB and a couple of O-linemen. unless they quit, i think we have 6 qbs.
Yes, we recruited 6 guys who played QB in HS but they aren't all playing QB at Lamar. For example, Christian Louis played QB at WB and is now a DB. At the HS level a lot of times your best athlete plays QB and then when they go to college the coaching staff changes their position to best utilize their potential. Another example is Marcus Jackson the WR who scored our only TD last week. He is the fastest player on the team and guess what position he played in HS? That is right, QB at Tyler Lee High School. -
I was at the game and I thought the athletes on the sideline hurt or whatever were the worst looking representatives we have. What is it about all the hats turned every which way shorts to their ankles. trying to look bad doe not make you bad, clean this trash up and establish some discipline. make them wear their warmups and have everyone on the same page.
Some of those guys may have been recuits in for the game. I don't know that for a fact but last home game there were several recruits at that game. Agree, I hate the baggy shorts hanging passed the waist with their underwear showing. A lot of kids do it for some reason. ::) -

That said, one day you will turn on the TV set and see Texas State playing a meaningful game against a big time opponent at home and wonder how that happened and why they are playing before a capacity crowd of 40k+. But I doubt you would ever think and wonder how Lamar missed out on making the big stage.
You know as I think about it I'm beginning to agree with others on thise board. We need to get out of the dumpy little SLC as fast as possible and move on to greener pastures. I mean, lets look at some other schools. Nearly every weekend you can tune in and watch ULM play a meaningful game. And, it seems like almost every night there's ULL right there on ESPN beating up on Florida and UT and Alabama and USC. (In case yall didn't know it, ULM stands for the University of Louisiana at Monroe and ULL stands for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). ULL, ULM, Ark State, and La Tech all used to be members of the lowly Southland and they are all now national powers playing meaningful games every weekend. Oh, and just think if we would have had the sense to get basketball out of the lowly Southland. We could have built a state of the art basketball facility, and possibly even have canceled football to free up a ton of money to build a national power, and then we could join an up and coming powerhouse basketball conference like the American South or something. If that didn't work we possibly could have moved to the Sun Belt! Man, wouldn't that have been awesome! We would be playing in countless meaningful games RIGHT now if we just would have done that. Oh wait, we did do that......
You write some lengthy post, and are very articulate but I only new a few. With this topic you are in the minority. Most want Lamar to play in the SLC for a few years and leave our options open. Here is a little information from an interview with AD Larry Tidwell from the Beaumont Enterprise. Although Tidwell said no official talks have taken place with the WAC or any other conference, he did say Lamar will work to align itself to be in position for a possible move to another conference
Did LU do a national search?
No need to do a national search as Larry Tidwell has all the qualities one would look for in a AD. If you read the article Coach Tidwell will coach the women's basketball team this season and then they will evaluate things at the end of the season. Here is a quote from Coach Tidwell. "I will finish this season as head coach then sit down with Dr. Simmons, and he and I will evaluate the situation to see if one position or the other is being hurt by me being responsible for both jobs," said Tidwell. "If this is found to be the case, we'll make any adjustment necessary, but it is my hope that I'll continue to coach. -

Web"b"er International with two b's was a formidable program. The North Texas - BCS comment was facetious. NT joining a power conference is as likely as LU going to FCS.
Why plan for retirement when I can win the lotto in the future. We don't know what is going to happen in the next 5 years. Why don't you tell the others to give it a rest. Is because you agree with them?
No, UNLV "if" enrollment continues to grow, on campus student involvement continues to grow. There is development around the Lamar campus and LU buys a lot of property for growth. The football team is successful for a few years. We upgrade our athletic facilities and add softball and build a nice stadium for the sport. Then like mffl stated there is money for the move to FBS I would support it 100%. For example of athletic upgrades Vincent-Beck in scheduled for $3,750,000 in 2011, $750,000 in 2012 and $500,000 in 2013. The softball stadium construction as been pushed back to 2013 when they expect cost to be $1,200,000 with completion in 2014. Lamar couldn't buy out Coach Roc's contract or give Coach Tidwell a raise for the additional title of interim AD. How can we afford to go FBS?

Totally agree with your comments AggiesAreWe. We have to do it the right way and IMO it is to take it slow but be ready if the right opportunity occurs and be ready to take action.
-
Man, you guys are hammering UNLV. I agree he is over-the-top with some of his comments but with all the conference realignment talk it is only astute for Lamar to look at all their options. Do I think we are headed for a FBS conference in the next couple of years, no. But there is even talk about the SLC taking in Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M on anygivensaturday. If Texas State, UTSA, and SHSU leave the SLC, Lamar won't be far behind. SLC - Open to Inviting Texas Southern, Prairie View? [Hidden Content]
