South Dakota AD Not Happy With LU
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
This wasn't a handshake deal with South Dakota, they had a written contract with a buyout clause. Evidently the contract allows Lamar to buyout the game for $100K so what's the big deal? Maybe SD shouldn't be signing contracts with buyout clauses if they don't like their opponents exercising that right. -
LU vs. SE. La. Updates/LAMAR WINS 57-52
I would have to say that these wins are more along the lines of the SLC really not being any good rather than Roc figuring something out. ;) I think it's safe to say if you stress defense in this league, you can win the majority of your games.
That's exactly why SFA is good every year, they are usually the best defensive team in the conference every year. -
The field house for softball is already built as part of the soccer field house. Lamar has plans to spend $1.2 million on the softball stadium in a few years so I'm guessing they are already trying to find the funding for that. Any word on where $3+ million for Vincent-Beck is coming from and will they start on the renovations this year?

Roc has settled on 4 starters he recruited out of high school, plus Osas and Lynch played tonight. Is this a new trend for Roc? I do like that he's starting Minor since he plays defense and can shoot the 3. With both Custer and Brown starting (Brown had 13 points) does this mean Roc has slowed down the offense and is finally concentrating on playing some defense? If this team does get hot and makes it to the SLC tourney and wins a few games then will Tidwell give Roc a one year extension because he'll have almost the whole team back next year? -
Lamar will win 6 or 7 games next year.

Pomeroy has LU losing by 3 so Lamar can win it, but they probably won't.

I saw on the Lamar website that the current athletic budget (for 2010-2011), which includes football, is about $11.5 million. If they do join the WAC then they'll probably need to figure out a way to get that up to at least $15 million. Not sure how they can do that without raising student fees.
-
The athletic fee was discussed at the TSUS regents meetings last week but I don't think anyone has said specifically what they talked about. Other fees are going up this fall so I think it would be a hard sell to raise the athletic fee again. I do know that at Texas State and possibly UTSA they are raising their athletic fee to $20 per semester hour.

Lamar football hopes to play TCU in future season
coachacola replied to coachacola's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Woodard has always said he was saving a few scholarships for any transfers so I'm sure he wasn't too concerned about being a "FBS counter" the second year. I doubt Woodard is losing much sleep over not playing one of the best FBS teams in the country on the road this second year. Hopefully they'll play TCU in a few years when Lamar is transitioning to FBS and has a deeper and more talented team. -
The Lamar University football team's game for the 2011 season against Texas Christian University is off the table, but Lamar athletic director Larry Tidwell plans to have a game scheduled against the school in a future season, he said Friday. The Cardinals' hoped-for game at TCU in 2011 got derailed by an NCAA rule that requires schools to have 90 percent of their scholarships used over two consecutive years to count for an opponent's bowl eligibility. Lamar played last season with 56 players on scholarship, which would account for 88.9 percent of the 63 scholarships a Football Championship Subdivision (former I-AA) school is allowed to distribute.
Read more: [Hidden Content]
is there even another lamar forum out there? if so, i've never heard of it.
Yes, and having multiple forums for Lamar is good. Competition is good. -
These meetings are open to the public so maybe someone who was there can fill us in on the details. Someone at Lamar must know who can share this info with us.

I like the idea of naming the basketball court after Billy Tubbs, but I would like it better if that includes a new scoreboard! :D
LU finds another way to lose [Hidden Content]
I get it now, Roc is trying to impress us with the number of ways to lose. He wants to go down in the record books! ;D -
The TSUS board of regents meetings are being held now and looking at the agenda here's a few items I found pertaining to Lamar: 1. Athletic fee 2. Naming of Room 200A in the Setzer Student Center 3. Naming of Dorms and Playing Court at Montagne Center 4. Award the Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D) Degree Does anyone have more details on these items? Looks like they've received more sizable donations. Maybe the naming of the playing court is for a new scoreboard? I also wonder if they want to raise the athletic fee to support a move to the WAC?

At least Roc is making it easier for Simmons and Tidwell to make a coaching change when the season is over! ;D -
Lamar, SHS not primary WAC targets
coachacola replied to coachacola's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
He is simply saying if the SLC loses 3 of its better members to FBS, then that leaves Sam in a bad conference that they won't want to be in. Therefore they would look to move into FBS to be in a competitive conference. That is how LU would force there hand
I agree, plus who knows what will happen to Nicholls and some of the other schools in Louisiana. There may not be much left of the SLC in a few years except a bunch of basketball schools. -
I find it funny with everyone going back and forth with the FBS FCS talk. Lamar is FCS and wanting to go FBS, if Lamar would have never left the Sun Belt we would be in the same boat as South Alabama and no one on this board would be complaining about Lamar being FBS and want them to drop down to FCS!!
If Dr. Simmons would have become president a few years earlier then I bet Lamar would still be in the Sun Belt. I still say getting to a FBS conference has been his and Tubbs goal since they got here. Since the Sun Belt has no openings then the WAC will do for now. -

What's so ridiculous about Lamar competing at the FBS level? They did once before and beat a good Baylor team back in the day. Lamar has been competing at the D1 level for 40+ years so why not have the football team at the top level too? -

Shoot, I don't care if it is a JUCO Head Coach who is a winner, as long as the man is A PROVEN WINNER! I could care less if our next coach WAS a big name but failed somewhere. I'm tired of seeing this program lose. Tidwell has a lot of contacts, so I am sure he knows someone who could bring some much needed success to our program.
Larry Tidwell has been on the Coach Roc radio show about 3 times this year. I'm scared to death he won't fire Roc!
Well, Dr. Simmons replaced Tubbs sooner than anyone expected so I would think he'll have a say in this, and if a lot of the big wigs are unhappy with Roc then he's gone.

From reading the WAC forum it appears that the California schools (like Cal Poly and others) don't have the money to make the move up. No Sun Belt schools want to leave for the WAC. The WAC needs 8 football schools so they can get a piece of the BCS pie. Lamar likes to do things secretly and needs to get their ducks in a row before making this sort of commitment. Benson doesn't need the embarrassment of getting rejected publicly by schools again. All this adds up to Lamar and the WAC making the big announcement in the next month or two. I guess the big question is can Lamar afford the WAC? The athletic budget for the current year is $11.5 million. Next year it should be over $12 million. If Lamar joins the WAC for 2012 and they have a FBS schedule then they should have a budget of at least $14 million. Pretty low for a FBS school but enough to get by in the WAC. With those number would Dr. Simmons say yes to the WAC? -
From the San Antonio paper:
While he didn’t totally shut the door on any speculation regarding Lamar and Sam Houston State, Southland Conference commissioner Tom Burnett said Wednesday the Western Athletic Conference is looking elsewhere in its bid to add more football-playing members: “(Western Athletic Conference commissioner) Karl (Benson) and I talk on a consistent basis. I think what occurred there with them, with the Mountain West deciding not to expand further, it gave them an opportunity to take a deep breath and assess their situation. “In my conversations with Karl, I have not heard Lamar or Sam Houston State mentioned as primary targets. I think their intention is to go after current FBS programs. Like I’ve said before, that could all change tomorrow.
[Hidden Content]

I thought maybe it is was being postponed due to lack of interest.
