Whitten finalist for Angelo State HC job
coachacola replied to coachacola's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Dodge made $275K as HC at UNT. Woodard only makes around $140K so Dodge would have to take a serious pay cut to be OC at Lamar. I doubt we'll see Dodge at Lamar and I bet Whitten is Lamar's OC next year. -
Whitten is 1 of 4 finalists:
Angelo State University has released its final four head coaching candidates as the Rams look to replace Dale Carr. Blinn Head Football Coach Brad Franchione didn't make the cut. Wednesday Coach Fran was one of those being mentioned to take over in Angelo, but not 24 hours later. Among those still in the running for the Rams post is former Sam Houston State Head Football Coach Todd Whitten. Whitten is currently the Offensive Coordinator at Lamar University. Others listed include: * Steve Warren, Abilene High School Head Football Coach * Will Wagner, Northwest Missouri Associate Head Football Coach * Pierce Holt, former ASU Player/NFL player. According to the Beaumont Enterprise:
Former Silsbee quarterback Jeremy Johnson is expected to sign with Lamar today. Johnson, a 2010 Silsbee graduate, began last season at West Virginia but left the school in midseason. Recruiting website Rivals.com considered Johnson the nation’s No. 9-rated dual-threat quarterback in the country, and his addition at Lamar could give coach Ray Woodard the game-breaking offensive player his team needed last season.

Although listed as a quarterback, there is no guarantee Johnson will immediately play the position at Lamar. Woodard and offensive coordinator Todd Whitten will likely figure the best way to give Johnson to make plays on offense.
[Hidden Content]

Jeremy Johnson To Stay Mum Til At Least Friday
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
There's a rumor that Shannon Dawson, SFA's OC/quarterbacks coach is going to WVU. Will this have any effect on Jeremy Johnson's decision to transfer? -
It would be really embarrassing for Lamar to be the first D1 team this year to lose to ULL.

O-Lineman Justin Brock of West Brook picks Lamar
coachacola replied to bigred360's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
It's a good thing when a local player chooses Lamar over rival SLC schools. If he's 6'4 and around 250 now, in a few years he should be 280 or more. -
In the first half?
-
Looks like he'll be playing both football and basketball at Lamar.
I can tell you for sure that Ford has not committed to Lamar. Lamar is on his list of possibles.
LeFredrick Ford was quoted in the paper the other day saying he'll wait until February before making a decision. Also, Trey Cassidy from Angleton has given a verbal to Colorado State. He would have been a nice pickup for Lamar.

I didn't see any Lamar recruits on that list, only players or high schools named Lamar. But I think Saturday is early signing day for JUCO players so we might hear some kind of announcement then. It's hard to find recruiting information on schools that are not FBS.
-
By joining the WAC Lamar could also schedule home & home games with schools from the Sun Belt, Mountain West and others. Texas State just announced two home and home deals with Wyoming and Navy. UTSA has already announced those kinds of deals as well as South Alabama. Texas State's stadium is the same size as Lamar's but they have already announced plans to expand it in a few years. Lamar would need to do the same if they join the WAC. Not saying that Lamar should join, just saying it does open up new opportunities if the WAC doesn't fall apart first.

Lamar vs. Huston-Tillotson Predictions?
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Last year Lamar only won by the score of 80-57, I seriously doubt it'll be that close this year. Should be another 40+ win for Lamar. What's the deal with only one D1 opponent at home for all of November and December? Looking at Texas' schedule, of their first 10 games, 8 are home games and the other 2 neutral games. I know Lamar has a lot harder time getting good opponents at home, but at least schedule all D1 opponents. Is Roc that desperate for wins? -
Another year, another blowout loss by a SLC team in the FCS playoffs. I thought the SLC was suppose to be one of the top FCS conferences in the country? Just like in basketball, the SLC is a one and done conference.

Lamar vs. Rice Predictions? RICE WINS!
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Both teams shot just under 50% from the field, but Lamar was 9 of 18 from behind the arc. The stats were about even except Rice out-rebounded Lamar and shot and made a lot more FT's than Lamar. The foul shots were the difference in the game. Rice was favored to win this game. Pomeroy even had Lamar losing by 14, so losing by 2 isn't that big of a surprise. Lamar doesn't have much of an inside game so that are going to be out-rebounded and give up easy shots inside. The Canisius game coming up should be interesting since they go 7-3 and 6-9 inside. I still think this year will be like 2008. Lamar started that year 3-6, and those 3 wins were against non-D1 opponents. That year Roc brought in newcomers Jay Brown, Justin Nabors, Kenny Dawkins and Brandon McThay. They weren't any good defensively and it took them some time to jell, but they went on a tear offensively and won a lot of games. But the one big difference is that Roc had some good inside guys with Sanders, Nabors and Brown. I think this team will get better and start winning games but they won't be great by any stretch of the imagination. Roc may even win enough to save his job. But this is his 5th year and he should be consistently winning 20+ games a year. I don't see that ever happening with Roc. -
SMU Houston Tulsa Memphis K-st Iowa st Texas tech Baylor Southern miss UAB Tulane UTEP
I could see something like that happening which would make it the "new" southwest conference. The Mountain West is already becoming the "new" WAC, especially if Utah State joins, which would more than likely effectively kill the current WAC. The WAC commissioner has already come out and said it's every school for itself. The WAC needs to hang in there or Lamar may be stuck at the FCS level for a while.

Lamar vs. Rice Predictions? RICE WINS!
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Rice runs the Princeton Offense as does Nicholls State and it gives teams a hard time defending. I stated I'll wait until the 12 game to start predicting scores and giving my opinion of the team so they still have a few more game before then. Go Cards.
Watching Coy Custer the other night made me think that he would fit in pretty well in a Princeton-style offense. As for the game, Rice is better than last year so it should be a close game. I'll be disappointed if Lamar loses this one. -
The Texas fans sitting behind me at the game commented "Why can't we dunk like that?" That dunk did cause a lot of oohs and aahs.

I think in a couple of months the WAC will know if it gets a waiver or not. If that's successful then I wouldn't be surprised if Lamar quietly starts talking to the WAC. If LU stays in the SLC, they'll attract big crowds against McNeese, SHSU and SFA. Will they attract the same crowds against La Tech, Texas State and UTSA? And in the short term, instead of lots of bus trips into LA and one trip to Arkansas, they'll be flying to NM, Utah, Denver, San Jose and Idaho. Those western teams just can't leave right away, it has to be a long term process or the WAC could just fall apart.
-
The WAC is on the verge of losing it's status as a FBS conference and could lose it's NCAA auto bids. Utah State, Idaho and SJSU need to stick around or the WAC will no longer exist. Maybe if the Sun Belt splits apart sometime in the future then you could see these old SLC schools joining the WAC. UNT is paying their new coach around $500K per year. Woodard here at LU is making about $135K per year, so if LU does go FBS he'd be extremely underpaid. I don't see Lamar having the money to go FBS just yet and they have yet to start softball. Tons of work and money is still needed.

**LU vs. Texas Updates** UT Wins!!
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Just got back from the game. Stupid traffic made me miss the 1st minute of the game. Here's my observations: UT's tough defense didn't kick in until about halfway through the first half. I was impressed with the way LU took the ball to the basket, but UT's big guys, while not that big, were good defenders and had a lot of blocks. LU was only 1-6 from behind the arc mostly due to UT not allowing LU any good looks. When LU did have a few open 3s, for some reason they passed them up and took some long jumpers instead. Texas has one of the best defenses in the nation so it's not surprising Lamar didn't shoot well, but I definitely was surprised by how well Lamar played defense. Custer played a lot because Roc needed a big guy inside. He had a decent game but LU definitely needs a good inside player. Brazier had a few bright spots but he's not there yet. Brown probably needs another year under his belt before he'll be a factor. But LU was about even on the boards with UT and they even got some good offensive rebounds. Mike James wasn't a factor in this game. He looked out of sync. Davis had a decent game but he's inconsistent. That probably sums up all the new guys. They should get better as the season progresses. With all the talk about the new guys, I was surprised how well the veterans played. Harris looks like a whole new player. Miles started the game strong. Harper had a solid game. I thought the refs called a decent game. The Texas fans were complaining during the whole game about the refs. The alley-oop dunk by Davis (I think) really impressed the Texas fans. On the way home on the radio UT's color announcer said that both Harris and Miles will cause a lot of problems in the SLC. I hope they are right. I'm sure UT has played better games and they are a young team, but Lamar hung tough most of the game so hopefully they'll build on this. -
Channel 26 fsn what channel would it be on dish network
I don't know about SETX, but I have the dish network here in the Austin area, and the main FSN channel (416) is showing a NBA game. I had to scroll up through the 400 channels until I found the LU-UT game listed on one of the alternate sports channels. It's also playing on one of the ESPN Full Court channels but I'm not paying for that package.

The Big 12 (-2) doesn't seem to have any good options to replace Colorado and Nebraska. Arkansas left the old SWC for greener pastures ($$$) so I doubt they'd want to go back. What other elite schools are out there that are not already in the SEC, Big 10 or PAC 10 that would fit in the Big 12?

Bevil leads assault on Lamar’s football record book
coachacola replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I doubt Bevil will be assaulting any record books next year.
