Conference realignment has exploded again....whooohoooo
I said on this forum before, Dr Simmons does think small and limited like most SETX leaders. Your kind of thinking would keep LU growth dead.
This is where you are wrong. Let me tell you the fundamental problem in this area. No one can get behind anything in SeTx unless it is the biggest and best. Well sorry you don't get to that point immediately you have to build to it, that is how all the other schools have done it and that is how Lamar WILL do it, with or without you. So you are the small minded one, if you honestly think Lamar has a shot at being FBS in 2 or 3 years you are very ignorant of the situation. It's not only that we don't have the dough at the moment it's that no conference has us on even a top 10 list. The mentality that LU has to go FBS or everyone will be disillusioned and quit caring is the small mindedness I speak of, people with that attitude are what keep this area from real growth. I will keep supporting LU to the end I will be at every game, I will buy the merchandise, I will tell everyone about the truly great things that are happening daily at my university. After graduation when I'm making the big bucks I will donate hundreds or a thousand each year to support the athletics and academics of Lamar. Why would I do these things? Because I love the school and the area and I'm committed to it's continuous growth. Anyone who will abandon LU just because they CAN'T AFFORD FBS in a 2 to 3 year timeline is the small minded dim wit that keeps this area from growth. Stop saying I'm the small minded one, I have supported this area with everything I have, that is what it takes. Do you have the guts to do the same? -
imo if we move to FBS and are terrible...u can forget about ppl coming to the games..and u can say bye bye to football once again...by the same token if we are terrible in FCS u can also forget about ppl coming to the games....point being just win baby!!! no matter who we play!!
Yes, a certain element would definitely not come to games if we are losing, but the program isn't dependent on ticket sales entirely. The reason the student fee was passed is so that Football has income no matter what the attendance is. This illustrates another reason no one knows what they are talking about. -
Lamar is ready to compete in an FBS conference in every sport besides Football (which is unproven).
By that line of thought we aren't ready at all. What does the F in FBS stand for after all? I think we are ready to compete in some sports but both Basketball and Football. I'm not saying we wont be just that we are not currently. -
In the 80's, LU and La Tech were equal. Today Tech is a known FBS school making national news and a top canidate for CUSA. Unknown Lamar, back in the SLC playing the same jv ball that killed the program. So sad yet you would be happy with it. The setx mentality at it's best.
I will only repeat that there are many other factors that lead to the decline of LU in the 90's. That was the only period of despair for the school. You didn't even recognize my examples that prove that your rule is false (i.e. football is not the primary reason for success, unless were talking about certain programs the University of Miami comes to mind) Believe me I'm not the small minded one here, you are. I don't know why it took me this long to realize it's useless to talk to you. Where did you go to school? Hopefully UNLV, it would be disgraceful to us if you were a LU grad and used that name. -
LU went 35 years, 1970-2005, without growth because of beliefs as yours. Lamar dropped football using the same thinking. You might be happy with LU being A FCS no growth school, the game day 2/3 empty stadium will be the results.
Wrong, there are other factors that were much more important, I can tell you about them but most of them have nothing to do with football. Believe me football is not the only reason a school grows in enrollment. look at UTA and UTSA, you don't know what you're talking about. The growth that has taken place at LU has more to do with the Texas Legislature's deregulation of tuition.
The FBS powers already think there are too many FBS schools and every year they make up new rules to block FCS move ups. In 5 years it will be so strict that no FCS can move up. Do you doubt the trend or do you naively think Simmons has the power to command LU into FBS at his choosing...
This is why I question you're reading, go back and look what I said. I never said that Simmons could command us into the FBS, I did say he can raise the money at the right time but money isn't the only factor. He has broader motives than just football anyways. -
I don't care who you know, please read....LAMAR DOES NOT DICTATE WHEN OR IF A FBS CONFERENCE CAN CALL THEM UP. So you can know the King and the Queen. If Lamar gets that call, Lamar better get its butt ready. If Lamar can't get it done, then Lamar may not get another chance. Lamar can forget about FBS, reguardless of Simmon's wishes.
Can you read? I know that we don't control when a conference calls us up that's common sense. I was stating that if we do get the call early it's not going to happen. I mentioned Simmons and Hopper because I was demonstrating where the schools priorities are. You may feel that it is imperative that LU is FBS that is not everyone in the administrations feelings. That type of move cost money and as I said they want to build the campus up, which also cost money. So my mention of those two names had relevance to what I was trying to get across. Also I completely agree with the sentiment that FCS is just fine. Do I want to see LU move to FBS, yes, if it doesn't conflict with the schools broader motives for development. If we end up staying FCS I will not cry about it though, I just want what is best for the school. To UNLV and everyone else who throw Lamar's name in with TxSt and UTSA, you're dreaming. Those two schools are far ahead of us in the line to get into any conference. Someone please cite a league commissioner talking about Lamar, no one is. Lets be realistic, were going to be in the FCS for the foreseeable future. The thought that if we don't get in in the next 2 to 3 years we never will is nonsense. How do we no what will happen in the NCAA 5 or 10 years down the road? LU is a school before it's a sports team. -

Seems like it's been the last 5-10 years..
I would consider the term "walk off" a more recent term. Probably since 2000. I know I played college baseball back in the '80's and never heard the term.
What team did you play for? Just curious. -
You guys are clueless beyond clueless. The blind leading the blind. The decision WHEN to go FBS is no longer LU's, or Texas st, or UTSA, or any other FCS.
LOL, that was funny. As far as offers for LU to go FBS, that's a very slim prospect. I have said I believe we can do it, I think we should do it with the right conference. The thought that when we get the call we have to be ready to move up is nothing new, regardless of rules changes. An FBS conference is not going to make very many special concessions for LU when we don't bring very much to the conferences at the moment. We don't have a very large media market, no major airport, budgets aren't up to par, etc. What I'm saying is that we have to have a bit of time to build support. Don't get me wrong I'm easily the biggest Lamar advocate you will ever meet, but we have to be realistic about how quickly LU can move on an FBS offer when we haven't even competed at the FCS level yet. Our money situation is not the best for it at the moment, there is a significant push to rebuild the entire campus, that takes dough. I know Jimmy Simmons as an acquaintance and I know what his ambitions are, he wants to LU to be more than just a football school. I work for the Dean of Engineering (Jack Hopper) so I know about the budget, more than anyone here I promise you. So to say that I'm the blind leading the blind is absurd, you need to check yourself on that one, unless you were directing that comment to someone else. -
If he wanted to come here he'd already be here. I say we revoke the scholarship offer.
I agree revoke the offer. Roc dropped him months ago, he wasn't on the list when Roc released it. I think the kid had academic issues read the article if you read it the right way it's like he had to go to a Juco.
...Lamar has several big time alumnus from engineer's, attorney's, doctor's and business owners who could support a move. That doesn't mention corporate philanthropy and a fan base growth due to starting a winning tradition.
That is the one reason we could make a move in 5 years. Our alumni are in the money. SHSU and TxSt love to talk about academics and act like LU is the ugly duckling of TSUS but we have very successful alumni. We were also more exclusive this year, LU only accepted 59% of applicants this year while SHSU was somewhere in the 70s. In fact I read an article about an accounting alumnus that just became the CFO of Lucas Energy!! So we can definitely throw together big buck when the time comes. -
there is still some paperwork that lu is waiting on from smu & what i understand some paper work has to go to ill. ,something about his letter of intent, not quiet sure. as for as smu goes , anthonys main reason was he wanted to be at home period. he spent 2 months at smu & was doing good in class, all fresh had to attend. he was also impressive at football time according to the coaches we have talked to. he liked the coaches & players & college , he just wanted to come home. this is the same reason that he did not sign with arizona, colorado, missouri, colorado state, wyoming .ect. he thought that smu was close enough home but he just could not shake wantng to be closer to home. shsu & sfa are closer & sfa is close to home, its just that he has so many freinds at lamar & plus he really likes the coaches ,coach mac, lb coach is really his favorite. no other reasons guys & when smu & other paperwork is done he will be at lamar for the next 4 years, he is eligible for 4 years, he did not play at smu ,just enrolled . smu coaches have called many times to tell us that he is truely a talent annd was scripted in to be a big part of their defense this year, they are sick & so are we , as a family, smu told us to stick behind him ,& w are, we are buying tickets & lamar clothing , go cards
Can you please clarify your relationship with the kid? Parent, friend, family, fan?
Hmmm, ok. Let me simplify it more. If LU joins the WAC, BYU must play 4-6 WAC schools every year. hint hint...BYU playing in Beaumont....
I'm sorry but LU isn't going anywhere for a couple of years. This doesn't even affect us. We don't have the Fan Base or the Money to go FBS. No one in the football world is seriously considering our move up to FBS at this point.(Just look at National College Football sites like AGS for example) I think we can do it in 5 to 10 years but honestly unless something earth shattering happens it wont be LU that is moving to FBS. TxSt, and UTSA will be gone long before us I'm sad to say. We should be content with the SLC for now. It has some good schools as far as FCS is concerned. We have 2 teams in the top 12 FCS rankings. -
all Woodard knows is JUCO ball and I hope for your program's success, that the FB program is not going to become a lot like your MBB program...
Woodard knows more than Juco Ball, are you forgetting or conveniently ignoring that he has played and coached at High levels in the Football world. He played top notch college ball at UT and then Top Notch NFL football for the Broncos. He had a uniform on in a Superbowl. I know he wasn't the coach but he was able to learn and observe from those people and see how a world class team is put together. He coached in NFL Europe, although it's not the NFL it's still professional ball, there were very good players in that league that he was able to coach including a certain assistant named James Brown. He may not have tons of HC experience but he does have plenty of football experience. Since in your opinion there is so little information to go by on Ray Woodard lets wait till 2 or 3 years down the road to pass judgement. As for transfer players, don't you think it's a good idea to layer your loss of seniors? Woodard did a very intelligent thing by bringing in juniors and transfers at various stages. Not all of them will be here for 2 years and then leave. Some of the transfers have 3 years from either red shirting or because they are true sophomores. A few people only have one year with the team. This, again, will stagger our loss of talent and insure that we are able to obtain depth more quickly. This isn't the FBS, Juco and transfers are acceptable and welcome. I count 37 players who are not freshmen of those 25 appear to be Juco about half listed as sophomores half listed as juniors. The rest are from either FBS or FCS schools varying from sophmores to seniors. With over 80 players that is very good balance in my opinion.

Lamar vs. McNeese St. Predictions?
CardAmbassador replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I guess we are looking at two different sources. I did post the entire opening paragraph, underlined the specific text, and provided a direct link to the whole article. I went off of what I read, so I don't know if I am "wrong" at all. Maybe McNeese voted for themselves, and if so I would not blame them. But be it 7-1 SFA or 8-0 SFA, the consensus is clear.
You can't vote for yourself so an 8-0 poll can NEVER happen. If the poll comes out 7-1 in SFAs favor then guess who voted for McNeese? SFA! I agree with BR360 polls are often wrong. I think McNeese has better fan support and more tradition so they will be the toughest game. Also we will have played 2 games by the time we go to SFA. At McNeese we will still be very fresh. Hard to argue that one. -

I just saw them in the Cardinal Cadence I received in today's mail. I don't know what I was looking for, but I'm a bit disappointed. :-\ Maybe I miss the old white pants we could only get cleaned at Zenith Cleaners down on Railroad.
I saw the Cadence article too. I like the design, It has elements of a corps uniform but it's a bit more modern. They're suppose to be a military/show band, I think the uniform may be some type of hybrid. You should definitely come out the the games and see if they grow on you. I'm very interested to see how the band will be, I think they're recruiting up to the very last minute. I'm sure next year they will have more then enough people once students see what a great opportunity it is.
The point of my original post was why do you wait until you actually play the first down of football before you throw oyher programs under the bus for attendance numbers....
I can tell you that the attendance numbers came up because of TT. I actually like TT for all of the discussion he brings to the southland, he makes at least me a better fan because he forces me to follow it all more closely. With that said though, he is very combative when it comes to LU in particular, I promise you TT was trashing LU long before football came back. We have to defend ourselves, and we end up lashing back at SHSU because that is TT's alma mater. Honestly I wish all the Southland schools especially the TSUS ones success, the more recognition we can get as individuals the more we can gain as a conference and a University System.
