Conservation Tips for the Tournament Bass Fisherman * Always fill your livewell away from the boat dock. Don't want fueld and oil in your livewell. * You need at least 1 gallon of water per pound of fish. Best to just keep it full. * Buy a floating thermometer (for bathrooms or pools) and put it in your livewell. Maintain the temperature about 5-10 degrees less than temperature of water (where fish came from, not surface temp). * Aereators should always be run continuously when water temperature is below 75 degrees F. Never use timers. Aeration works well to removed carbon dioxide and ammonia. Never use a floating or submersed aereator, as they will add heat to the livewell and increase water temperature. * Flush livewell with fresh water every hour or two max. This removes bio-waste and helps to control ammonia, ph and carbon dioxide. * If water temperature in the livewell is greater than 75 degrees F, you will likely need an oxygen system. The aereator alone will not maintain dissolved oxygen concentrations at 7PPM or greater alone. The aereator will however help to remove ammonia and carbon dioxide. * never leave a fish out of water longer than 30 seconds. This will stress the fish and cause hypoxia. Oxygen SystemsThere are a few kinds on the market, some good some bad. Here are tips for their use and installation (follow manufacture recomendations). *use welders oxygen. You can use disposable oxygen bottles or for about 60.00 you can buy a small bottle on the internet that can be refilled for about 5.00. * buy a good adjustible regulator. You can get one from www.auquatico.com, as well as complete systems. Your regulator needs to be made for pure oxygen. They run about 50.00. - 60.00 dollars. *From the same place you can buy a ultra-fine oxygen diffuser for about the same as a bottle 50-60. * When water temperatures are above 75 degrees or you have a large quantity of fish (lbs here), then run the oxygen system. You will want to run it around 0.3 liters per minute to start and if the water is above 85 degrees F or you have a heavy stringer, bump it up around 2 liters per minute. * If you want to spend about 170.00 you can buy a dissolved oxygen meter and measure the PPM exactly. Try to keep it at 7 PPM - 8 PPM. * I don't want to say use one brand or another, but if you PM me I will be glad to help you put one together and install it properly. Temperature Control * 2 each 1/2 gallon (ice in a frozen milk jug) will maintain water temperature 10 degrees below ambient for about 2-3 hours. * Don't drop the temperature below 10 degreef F from where the fish was caught. Temperature at 30 feet could be vastly different than at the surface. I use 5 degrees to be safe. Live Well Additives * Sure Life Labs makes a great one. Use a tested product and make sure it DOES NOT have garlic in it. * Use as prescribed by the bottle. * Additives help to calm the fish, thus reducing stress. They also help to control harmful bacteria and treat fish injuries. Weigh Bags * When you get the fish in the weigh bag, you need to have the bag refilled with oxygenated water within 1-2 minutes max. Use some of the water from the weigh line holding tanks. Eeach time you go from a holding tank to the next, add some of thier oxygenated water (do so every minute or so). The dossolved oxygen is dropping FAST in the bag and your fish can be stressed, which can cause weight loss. * Use a BIG bag and keep 3-5 gallons in it. * Don't haul your fish long distances in the bag (if possible). Remember, they are holding their breath after about a minute or two. Hope that helps.......

Pass through Barrett Station, enter Little Barrett (also known as Crosby), enter Big Barrett (also known as Huffman) turn left at first pine tree, turn right at second BBQ stand, then right at the 18th closed down firework stand. Field behind sewer plant on right.......... ;D ;D ;D Just kidding folks, little in-district poke at our "Yankee" (anything North of HWY 90) friends to the North.... ;D ;D ;D

Jan to June is Bass Fishing. I'll sneak a tuna trip or wahoo trip in here somewhere. July to October is Offshore. I'll slip a bass trip in here somewhere. Days between will be for those really dumb trout and redfish ;D Every other day is either football games, baseball games and/or arguing with wife about fishing, football and baseball..... ;D ;D -
In the next month I will be posting tips to help you not kill fish. In addition, I am working with the State of Texas on a number of conservation issues. If you have an issue that applies to a fishery, in particulare freshwater lakes, please let me know. I'll be glad to look into it. In the meantime, if you want to know how to keep from killing your fish when the water warms up, send me a PM. I will say this in advance, if the water temperature is 85F, your aereator is NOT working efficiently. You need to maintane the dissolved oxygen level in your live well at 7 PPM or greater. At 6 PPM the fish becomes stressed and the osmoregulation of the fish is not good.

That happens on good lakes. I suggest taking the lake and fish an area like it is a pond. Slow and deliberate. Don't just chunk and wind, make your cast count. My two cents., for what that's worth.

Went last week to Stetson Bank and picked up a BIG Tiger Shark......no did not plan that. ;D ;D We had several LARGE king fish and two decent wahoo. Yes, seas sucked !!!!!!!!

If you don't mind driving to Galveston try Captain Max Harris. He has a 44 foot striker (Sportsfishing Boat) that is very nice. His number is 713-857-4915. He has a web site [Hidden Content] Tell him Jody told you to call.

Dana Timaeus is a local attorney who is also a dive instructor (lives in Beaumont). Dana is VERY good and normally teaches out fo the Diver's Den and does open water in Vidor and Smith Lake. You can reach Dana on his cell at 409-840-5618. I have taken classes from him and helped him with classes. He is good and very safe. Good Luck. Let me know when you get certified and we will have to jump in somewhere.

New Caney's ACE - Dean will match-up against BH's ACE - Hales on Friday at 7PM in New Caney. Rumor and scouts alike say New Caney's Dean is one of the most dominant pitchers in all of Souteast Texas, with 90-92+ mph fast ball and great off-speed stuff. New Caney is 8-1 for district, coming off a 16-0 win over Smiley. The last few New Caney games appeared to be a - "who's who of scouting?" For District, BH is averaging more 14.3 runs per game and have ONLY allowed an average of less than 1 run per game (0.77 to be exact). The Eagles have outscored their district opponents 129 to 9 and rune-ruled most, if not all of their opponents, inlcuding an 11-1 game vs New Caney a few weeks ago. I say this will be a low scoring game with defense being the difference. BH wins 2 -1.

Barbers Hill shuts out Crosby, 12-0 By Doyle Barlow Baytown Sun Published April 10, 2007 Barbers Hill took another step toward the District 21-4A baseball title with a 12-0 victory over Crosby Monday night, in a game shortened to six innings because of the run-rule. The win moved the Eagles to 19-3-1 overall and 9-0 in the district, as they prepare for a showdown against second-place New Caney Friday night. New Caney’s only district loss was to Barbers Hill in the teams’ first meeting. “I’m worried about New Caney right now,†said BH head coach Gil Stalbaum, when asked if he was worried about his team peaking too soon. “I’m expecting a great game and we’re excited about it to tell you the truth. We could drop from first to third real quick, because our next two games are New Caney and Huffman and they’re both good enough to beat us.†Kendall Thamm was good enough against Crosby on Monday. The lefthander gave up only two hits and three walks, while striking out 10 to run his record to a perfect 6-0 on the season. “We saw their pitcher (Thamm) the first time around and I thought we’d compete a little better this time,†Crosby coach Marcus Thompson said. “He’s gotten better since the first time, but our hitters should have improved too.†Barbers Hill struck for one run in the first inning off Crosby starter Hernand Hernandez, when Cameron Campbell drove in Derek Hulsey, who reached on an error. The Eagles then broke the game open with five runs in the second inning. Campbell reached on an error and scored; Ross Hales singled and scored; Alex Rocha singled and scored; Kyle McDonald singled and scored; and Amando Fuentes walked and scored. Tony Carmona and Hulsey also had RBIs in the frame. Leading 7-0, the Eagles capped the run-rule with five runs off Cougar reliever Ronnie Flack in the sixth. The big blow was a three-run walk-off homer by Seth Helmly, his third dinger of the year. “He (Helmly) has been our designated hitter,†Stalbaum said. “But he missed our last game because of a school function, so he didn’t get to start.†The loss dropped Crosby to 10-13 overall and 5-4 in the district. It also leaves the Coogs very little room for error if they want to make the playoffs. “We’ve got to beat everybody we’ve got left going into our last two games,†Thompson said. “Our last two games are New Caney and Huffman and we’ve got to win one of those.†Crosby will return to action at home Friday against C.E. King.

#5 pitched a very good game for BH and what trouble he did have late he got out of with the help of some great defensive plays and quality pitches. A lot of really good base running (except one time with a runner on 3rd.... ;D). Crosby ran 2 different pitchers out and both were pretty darn good. What few mistakes Crosby made on the mound, BH made them pay for it. Point in-case 6th inning walk off 3-run shot to seal the deal (Congrats Seth on a long bomb as a pinch hitter off the bench). Another good outing for the Eagles. Friday comes the real test with New Caney's "Stud" Dean pitching at their field. By the way, the Lady Eagles blanked New Caney tonight 3-0 so they may not be in a good mood Friday......

***WEEK 7 SETXSPORTS.COM TOP 10***
bh89-2 replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
BH should see great pitching the next few weeks (Dean, Listi). New Caney, Crosby and Huffman have very good pitchers waiting. With all these run-rules, BH's pitching has pleanty of rest. Good job of coaches getting the work in regardless of innings played. This week is the real test for BH......let's hope for more run-rules. ;D -
