I just talked to  UIL director and yes you can practice a sport out of season duing the school year in the athletic period. I was wrong but I still feel the sameway about classes for individual sports. 50 minutes is not a lot of time to actually get in much work.  Most of the work is done after school. HJ is good not because they have a basketball class but because of their little dribbler program. I don't see the baseball class helping their baseball program. Silsbee they just have more athletes plain and simple. Don't see a basketball class helping Bridge City either. Here are the facts, unless Orangefield really grows at a rapid pace we will always be in the rear view mirrow of WOS, Silsbee and HJ in basketball, also WOS, Silsbee and BC in football. It will be hit and miss for us as long as we stay in this district. We simply do not have the number of athletes some of these bigger schools have. Orangefield needs to have their athlete's playing multiple sports in order to compete. If kids start specializing the program as a "WHOLE" is doomed. That is what we are talking about RIGHT, the "WHOLE" program.

    "WHOLE" program = Football program

Anyone who thinks that baseball or basketball players don't benefit from actually "playing" baseball or basketball or working on those individual sports during an athletic period is in denial or truly thinks that every boy in a HS should be playing football and maybe fit in another sport where possible during those specific seasons.  That just isn't the way it is anymore.  With the growth of select baseball and AAU / summer basketball, kids have more options to develop in other sports and what some of you perceive as the "specialization problem" is only going to get worse in all classifications.  There are more options to work on the non-football sports and unfortunately, some of the better athletes may like those better than football and shockingly choose not to play.

Baseball and basketball players get next to nothing from doing football offseason workouts during their specific season.  The workouts should be sport specific, especially during the course of the season and if a kid chooses to specialize, he should not be looked at as letting the football program down.  I know this is Texas and football is king, but some of the arguments on here are ridiculous.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but I just can't see why the head football coach would be overseeing the workouts of basketball and baseball players.  The skill sets for those sports are completely different and so are the weight and conditioning workouts.  It just souds like micromanaging or worse to me.
He is the ATHLETIC DIRECTOR. He is overseeing the ATHLETES. Unless of course, you do not consider Basketball and Baseball players athletes.
Thanks for the clarification, Bill.  I really appreciate it.

At most schools the AD portion of the job is merely administrative and consists of hiring coaches for other sports and letting them do their jobs and run their programs.  Not micromanaging workouts and weight programs for sports that (let's be honest) compete with football for athletes.

The only reason to do this is to keep kids in what is primarily the football class and make it clear that even if you don't want to play football you will still be under the head football coach's control.  I would bet that it has dissuaded some kids from going straight basketball or baseball since they have to go through football workouts anyway.
  3. I don't mind the play-in or first round game.  A 16 seed is a 16 seed no matter how you slice it.  Lamar could either be an automatic 16 seed and be the sacrificial lamb for a Number 1 seed and be one and done or you can get the play-in game and have a realistic shot to at least win a game in the tournament.  Get the win against Vermont, cap off the season, and then play North Carolina and increase the exposure for the program.  If Lamar continues to get in the tournament under Coach Knight, they won't always be a 16 seed or relegated to the play-in game.  The future looks bright for the program and any tournament win with this group of players is icing on the cake.
  4. I have nothing to do with STJFL, but let it go.  STJFL is a private organization and for whatever reason they decided that they don't want Port Arthur involved anymore. It's unfortunate, but that is their right as a private organization.

If you have a place for your kids to play next season, go there and make the most of it.  Why stay where you aren't wanted and continue to dwell on it?  Besides, if some of the other teams were so inferior to your PA teams, what good are you doing your kids by blowing out weaker teams every week.

This was actually a very good game untill the 4th.  The wheels came off and Nederland rose to the challenge and put us away when it counted.  We know we can play with Nederland.  We need to work on some things in the 4th period.  We've lost many games this year due to no execution in the 4th.  I still say that you need your best players (G. Mitchell and K. Smith) to be in the best positions to do damage on set plays.  Smith is a good 3 point shooter.  Get him an open 3 point look off an off the ball screen. If they play it too tight, he'll drive in and finish at the cup.    Get Mitchell a good look off a quick curl for a midrange jumper.  If they overpersue, he can also finish at the cup in traffic.  If we want to beat Nederland in the second meeting and make a nice playoff run, these are things that we need to work on for the next few weeks, IMO.

As a Nederland graduate from 20 or so years ago, it still shocks me what Brian English has done here.  I never thought I would see the day when Central would be talking about being able to compete with Nederland and hopefully beating them in the next game.  Huge reversal of fortune.

Congrats Bulldogs. Remember, this team is young. There were 2 sophs and 3 juniors on the floor quite a bit. Great job!!
And? North Shore starting guards are sophmores.
What big team have they beaten? Hightower? Hightower is not the same team like last year that went to Austin.
Did U watch Ned play this weekend Dove? Why don't you stop hatin' and give those kids some credit? They deserve it!  >:(
I agree with you. They will be a force in their district. But Hightower is still playing in the playoffs. At least seven players are missing off that team.
NEderland is missing 5 starters from last year  8)
They graduated ::)

I guess we should have tried to reload with some "transfers" from HF?
  7. Blue Dove:
I'm sure your kids are great players.  That seems to be the consensus of everyone that has seen them play.  What I can't understand is your incessant downplaying of Nederland's basketball program.

I know you think that any program not built by AAU types and "free agents" doesn't deserve any credit, but Coach English has built a strong program from scratch without blue chip talent.  This is not a flash in the pan anymore.  This program is going on 4 strong years now and it's coming from the grass roots.  No one puts them in the class of historically strong programs like Ozen, Central, HJ, Silsbee (or Hamshire Fannett) yet, but they are clearly emerging.  I can't help but wonder what is really behind your seeming hatred for Nederland basketball?
  8. I coached with Clint in Vidor several years ago.  He was always a very good X's and O's guy, but more than that, he gets every ounce of effort and talent out of his players.  Very similar to Jeff Mathews, the kids know that Clint loves them and they will run through walls for him.  He has earned everything he has ever gotten in the coaching profession and no one has worked harder for this type of opportunity than Clint.  Good luck and bring it home this weekend!

Quirante is a great player, but how can the Defensive MVP not come from the district's best defense?  That doesn't make any sense to me.  Corbin Carr was the most dominant defensive player that I saw all season.
Got no problem with that if you make Montana MVP. How are you a leader on both sides of the ball and not MVP? Totally agree with you. Seems to me the voting wasn't done according to the stats or the obvious for that matter. I have no idea what these individuals based the voting on but they didn't get it right. Period.
I would probably agree with you on that.  Quirante was the straw that stirred the drink for the Pirates this year.

Yes you beat us when we had a retard for a coach but them days have long since been gone. YOUR COACH KNEW IT WAS OVER, so he left while on top. I don't blame him. You will soon be the Shepherd of your district. So enjoy and talk about the years you was good because you will not see any for a while again. Most of these kids just started middle school those days you was good and to them its like remembering the 1960's.

You just committed a personal foul on the English language.  A little bit of syntax, conjugation and grammar never hurt anyone.  I promise.  If you are going to try and dog another school, at least try and use the King's English and not whatever hillbilly dialect that you just used.  You are not exactly a ringing endorsement for the quality of the education from whatever school you came from.
