Robert Armentrout= Excellent Coach John Harrell=Excellent Coach Robert Verde=Excellent Coach These guys you are referring to are all good coaches......I would rather kill this subject before I have to "callout" the coaches I am referring to. For the last 3 or so years I have only been watching "and helping when i can" the age bracket of eleven and under both softball and baseball....I have not coached and don't care to. I as a parent have thrown balls to girls and boys and helped only with coaches asking and myself volunteering. I have always kept my mouth shut at practices..In the heat of the moment I have called out an umpire or so!! LOL I guess the coaches on this forum are taken it so personal cause they think I am referring to them..I am just referring to the age bracket that I have witnessed and you are probably correct in saying that the coaching gets much better as the girls get older..Its probably due to the fact that at this age level most coaches, parents, and kids want it to just be fun more so than competition...

Thank you for exactly stating what you just stated.......There is not ONE coach in this entire area that has seperated himself or herself from the pack....Why do you think that is??? This area is and always revolved around sports...There are many and I repeat many very knowledgeable people in this area to have over 35-40 Excellent coaches...I can personally name them. Is there a reason they don't get involved??? It just seems to me that quality of coaches has gown downhill due to the fact that the ones coaching now aren't there for the right reasons...Either they did not play sports and are living their lives through their kids or they might just really and truly be volunteers that care enough and try to help but they are not teaching our kids the simple proper fundamentals...Is that justifying!!! If I volunteer to help with handicapped children lets say that need speech therapy and I dont know anything about it SHOULD I CONTINUE TO DO IT JUST BECAUSE I HAVE SOME EXTRA TIME ON MY HANDS AND CARE ABOUT THE KIDS?? NO, in my eyes, i would be unintentionally hurting the cause!!! I guess my point is that if you want to volunteer to do something at least know a little something about it...I have watched to many young children get taught the wrong fundamentals way too many times....Last night, at a select team ballgame, the coach yelled from the dugout all night to everyone of his batters "ELBOW UP"!!! I guess some of you coaches still think thats the proper way to hit a ball!!!!

Johnny T...You also stated "The key would be for a coach or organization to be so attractive that most of the good players would flock to them. That team could then be selective as to the players that they accept." I COULD NOT AGREE WITH YOU ANYMORE.. So you, yourself are saying that we do not have that here....THATS MY POINT!! THANK YOU!!
LULU, I see no problem discussing this but things were getting too personal. You basically said there were no "good" coaches in the area, so of course people are going to be offended. Have you seen everyone and why do you believe that? What are the specific problems as you see it. You talk about kids and coaches that are not A-Ball material, but won't time take care of that. Each year the numbers will pare down as players discover that this sport is not for them and the concentration of good players will become stronger and stronger. There have been some very good coaches in the past in this area at 10U and suspect there are some now and will be again. The key would be for a coach or organization to be so attractive that most of the good players would flock to them. That team could then be selective as to the players that they accept. Another problem is that at this age a lot of players (or their parents) are not interested in a lot of travel. Lastly there is no wrong approach only wrong matches. Some kids want to play a higher level but only for fun, while others have decided that softball is their love and want to play only at the highest level and may have decided that college is an option. At what age this happens, is probably variable, but it will happen. The bottom line is I have seen a lot of very good coaches and it is unfair to lump them all together because they are all different. I personally am very fond of a new 10U coach and I can tell you, she knows more about the game than most. That's jsut the way I see it.
Show me where I said "there were NO good coaches"!!! If you read an earlier post I commend the coach from 11U Orange Storm and I said I dont even know the guy..I have just witnessed and watched his coaching and I give credit where credit is due...Once again I believe I have offended a few people on here because maybe, just maybe they are second guessing their coaching skills!! This topic is now mute...I have tried to make a point and not sure why a select few cannot understand that "IN MY OPINION I BELIEVE THAT 60-75% (NOT ALL) COACHES IN THIS AREA ARE CLUELESS!!! If you still dont understand, I dont know what else to tell ya!!!

Yes indeed tappedout!! Our 8u team was that good!! And one of the major factors was that your daughter was a member of the team...Hope she is doing well now..We could have been alot better with a little better coaching!! LOL Just glad we had the girls with the natural physical abilities...I wasn't trying to stir the pot and make people think that i was some disgruntled parent that his daughter got cut off some team...I was simply trying to make a simple point that I was and still am disappointed with the QUALITY of coaching around here...Let me know when your daughter plays as I would love to come watch her play!! Take care

By the way BIG HAM my daughter is a multi-sport athlete!!!! But thats besides the point....This has nothing to do with my daughter or me.......Can I post an opinion that I believe the majority of coaches around here are clueless......YOU MUST BE ONE OF EM!! BACK OFF THE TABLE BIG CHEESE!! Get a life!!!!! This topic is about poor coaches.......Not about anything else!!!!!!!
-
once again I am not looking for a team for my daughter.....Once again I am not saying all coaches play daddy ball.....Read carefully ONCE AGAIN I AM SAYING THAT THE MAJORITY OF THE COACHES HERE DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING......PERIOD!!!!!!!!!! HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
And its not just in select softball...Go watch some of these so called "Select" baseball teams at Ford Park...There is no way that half of those kids belong on a select team..Its a status thing for all these Hoity Toity PARENTS to say their child plays on a select team..Which is garbage!!!!! The coaching out there is just as bad!! In witnessing and watching tons of games out at Ford Park in the 11U division there is only ONE coach that I have seen that absolutely knows what he is doing and I don't even know the guys name...He is the coach for the 11U Orange Storm. In my eyes, he is the best coach I have seen in this area for this age group.. So I'm no disgruntled parent...I'm just tired of these volunteer coaches (which half of them have never played a sport in their life) out there that cant even coach the fundamentals of the game!!! I also believe that any SELECT team should be coached by paid coaches......That keeps the mommy and daddy ball out of the game and also keeps the parents where they belong (IN THE STANDS WITH THEIR MOUTHS SHUT)... You wanna see a coach...Look at the 8U Southbelt Stingers coach Les Wincher.......Parents arent allowed to say a word and that is the most disciplined group of 8U little girls that I have ever seen and can whip any 10U SELECT team around here!!! ITS COACHING!!!!!!!!!!

It has nothing to do with me or my daughter. My daughter started playing at the age of 4 and made the 6U PN state team at the age of 5....She also made the 8U PN State team at the age of seven...Im no disgruntled parent...I am proud of her accomplishments and she was coached by whom I consider one of the best 6U coaches in the area (Regina Lunceford). My daughter is now just 8 years old and is still in 8U. I enjoy playing, watching, and coaching softball and I am an ex-baseball player...I was venting about the quality of coaches after the 8U level in this area...I just have not seen any coaches at the 10U level that I would want to digress what Regina has taught her...Also, i was stating that (in my opinion, which might not mean crap to any of you) 60-75% of the girls playing 10u select do not belong in select ball...A 10 year old SELECT player should easily be able to handle a "can of corn" pop fly and they are being dropped left and right...Also, by witnessing and watching a lot of these 10u select teams the coaching is absolutely horrible...I sit here and listen to all you people say Houston Teams are more competitive due to numbers..Which in part is true..But i do not believe it is the factor to the magnitude that everyone claims it to be.....I think its the lack of proper coaching in this area that is one of the main factors...For example, look at the Memorial Titans this year which is basically three high schools put together which to me is comparable to the numbers of Houston schools...Do you really believe that they just this year magically somehow retained all this talent with these physical abilities..HELL NO.....THEY FINALLY GOT A GOOD COACH!!!!!!!!! Thats my point..They have had the numbers and talent there for over 6 years and could never be competitive due to COACHING!!!!!!! Mid-County is full of mommy and daddy ball and always will be and its time for some real coaches to step up and get rid of these bums that are teaching you and I kids absolutely nothing......And you wonder why lots of young girls are leaving the great sport of softball for soccer!!!!!!!!

I deleted my earlier topic cause I believe some of you either miscomprehended what I was saying or are just eager to defend these non-productive volunteer coaches......Take care
