Weak Brooke Bruin Cubettes
82 5A State Champs replied to Mr. Buddy Garrity's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I'm with Sarge. I think WB has the potential to suprise a few folks, this year. The Bruins are getting very little respect, in the polls, and that's fine with me. That just means folks are overlooking the little school in the West End. When its all said and done, I think WB will be one of those playoff teams from the 215. ;) -
I like the list and think it represents a good mix across the state. I'm also curious to see how Lake Travis stacks up against the elite of 5A. Should be some great games come playoff time.
I think they'll quit saying that once Sterling and Channelview are removed.
Well, we've got two more years, at least, with them in the district. Until then, the 215 will still likely get little respect. -
It feels weird not seeing Brook ranked in the Top 25...
why would you expect to see WB ranked? The Brook never gets any love....especially after the debacle last season. Dwindling numbers, in the program, and a new HC....it will be a while before WB is a contender again. Just sayin. -
21-5A toughest in region?
82 5A State Champs replied to gary-us-bonds's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I agree, there are probably 5 teams in this district that could be district champs in other districts. It will no doubt be one of the tougher districts in the state. However, the 'No Team Left Behind' mentality, that the UIL has implemented, is pointless to begin with. The playoffs are too watered down. When you have a team make the playoffs with a 2-8 or 3-7 record, something needs to change. Back in the day, only district champions qualified for the postseason. Even having the second place team go in, is ok. But 4 teams, per district, and crowning 2 state champions per classification, is taking a little of the luster off of things. Its all about making money, these days. Off my soap box, now. -

Lamar vs Vermont play in game! Winner gets NC
82 5A State Champs replied to PhatMack19's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
My point is, Lamar is a conference champion. They should be IN! If the NCAA wants to have a "play in" game, give it to the lowest seed out of the Big East, and make them play their way in. Doesn't the Big East have like 8 teams in the tournament? Conference champions should be in, period! -

82 5A State Champs replied to PhatMack19's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I'm really proud for Lamar, this year, but I'm sorry, if you win your conference, you should be automatically in the Tournament. What is this "play in" BS? Lamar has 23 wins! The last time they made the tournament, they got in with a 15-15 record! This is totally disrespectful to Lamar, IMO! The NCAA selection committee is a joke, plain and simple......and I hope Lamar crushes Vermont! -
Kevin Flanagan's record.

Crosby is in, what, 19-4A? Not a powerhouse 4A district, some would say. How does the level of competition in that 4A district, compare to what he's going to see in 21-5A? NS, PAM, LP, DP.....these aren't scrub 5A teams! I am optimistic, and hopeful, that this guy can keep WB at the top of the heap without missing a beat. Good luck to him. I hope he does a fantastic job, at WB. This could certainly be the most talent rich school he has coached at. Let's hope he uses it wisely! -
Can anyone tell me what kind of W/L record he had at Crosby? I wouls like to examine those scores, and record, for myself. I am excited about Coach Flanagan coming to West Brook, but would like some more information on his coaching style, and theories, and how he plans to keep WB on the winning track.
I am really surprised to see Joe Slack's name on this list. Talk about swinging for the fences!
I dont feel very confident that this guy would even be considered for the position. After looking at his credentials, I think its best if he stayed in the smaller school ranks. The teams, and schools that WB plays, aren't anything like the ones he coached against at HD.

Larry Haynes...New Head Coach at Westbrook
82 5A State Champs replied to tupac7's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Hmmm, thats interesting. Coach Haynes has 21 years as a head coach. Coach Haynes is the most winning active coach in the entire Southeast Texas area with a record of 146 wins and 69 losses, 5 District Championships, 8 Bi-District Championships, and 1 Regional Finalist. Haynes has been named Coach of the Year 9 times and was also the NFL High school Coach of the year Award Nominee in 2003, holding the highest award a high school coach can receive. Coach Haynes has also had 6 teams qualify for the 7 on 7 State Championship. It will be interesting to see if this rumor is true. But from looking over his credentials, this might be the guy to keep WB in their winning ways. Curious..... -
Chuck Langston for West Brook football Job
82 5A State Champs replied to understand's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I remember Chuck, when he played at WB. Great player, and great guy. As an underclassman, I looked up to him, and he was a great role model. I think he would be a great coach.....he knows how to win! -
I agree with you, WBB. Coach Jones has some tenure at WB, and is familiar with the history and successes WB has had over the years. He also understands the challenges that lay in front of him, with regards to the field house situation, and having to deal with the politics at BISD. I think he would be a good fit.

Very typical to try and place the blame on Dr. Thomas. Cause guess what, its coming!
Wasn't there a misstrial? Wouldn't this have been brought to light? Didn't they have MONTHS to prepare and gather this information? Where is it? They sure in the heck did not provide it. Maybe because there is NONE.
You dont think its over, do ya? The FBI doesnt come up with 37 trumped up charges, for no reason. It will be tried again, and eventually, somebody is gonna roll over.

For what its worth, I believe everything happens in cycles, gang. Lets take a look back at the coaches in WB's history.... Alex Durley (82-84) had a record of 32-7-1, and a State Title to his credit. Leo Nolan (85) The Bruins went 4-5 under his watch. Jerry Henschell (86-96) The Bruins had a record of 86-35-1, and numerous playoff appearances, but never reached farther than a Quarterfinal loss to Katy in 1994. Al Rabb (97-04) Talent depleted, for the most part, the Bruins could only muster a 25-58 record under Rabb. Craig Stump (05-11) Coach Stump has a 57-23 record in his tenure at the Brook, making it to the 2nd round of the playoff every year except the '11 season. West Brook is 204-128-2 lifetime in 5A football. So, you see gang, there seems to be a pattern of up and down, up and down, in the history at WB. I may be reading too much into this, or have too much time on my hands at work, but if history repeats itself, we are in for a few down years in the near future. I hope I'm wrong and we never miss a beat, but from where I'm sitting, it dont look good.
